Premier League Gameweek 5 Summary
FRIDAY 8PM – BRENTFORD v CHELSEA
Stats: The last four games between these sides at Brentford have ended in a draw, plus five of the last 6 games there. Chelsea have only beaten Brentford twice over the last nine games at either ground. Brentford have also drawn three of their first four games to start the season. Over the last three seasons Chelsea are W3 L1 on a Friday in the Premier League v all sides and Brentford is W1 D1. Chelsea have the fifth highest Expected Goals Scored and Against this season so far.
Verdict: The way Chelsea are playing there’s no way this game will be scoreless. This should be an entertaining score draw to kick off the weekend.
Prediction: Brentford 2 Chelsea 2
SATURDAY 12:30PM – TOTTENHAM v ASTON VILLA
Stats: There is just one goal scored between these two sides in four games so far. And 12 goals conceded in total. And no wins. Despite these teams best result so far being a draw, H2H says that’s unlikely as the last 23 games between these sides have not ended in a draw. Bad news for Spurs fans is that Aston Villa have won three of the last four at Tottenham. Aston Villa’s away record to London clubs was W3 D1 L3 last season. Spurs have won only one game of their last 13 at home.
Verdict: Neither of the teams can’t really afford to lose, one more than the other. A loss would see almost full chaos at Spurs, and though not generally wishing them bad luck, it would also be funny.
Prediction: Tottenham 1 Aston Villa 1
SATURDAY 3PM – BRIGHTON v ARSENAL
Stats: Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 6 games v Brighton – W4 D2. It’s the same record for games at Brighton too. Brighton were W3 D1 L2 v the top 6 sides last season. Brighton are top for expected goals this season (10.8) while Arsenal are top for Net Expected Goals (4.8).
Verdict: Game of the weekend hidden in the usual timeslot where the games fight for last on Match of the Day.
Prediction: Brighton 1 Arsenal 2
SATURDAY 3PM – EVERTON v IPSWICH
Stats: Ipswich are unbeaten in their last four trips to Everton – W2 D2 – and have scored two goals or more in that run. Prior to that they won none of the previous nine games at Everton. Everton were W1 D3 L2 v promoted teams last season. Ipswich have conceded seven goals in two away games this season and also scored five.
Verdict: After taking three months fewer to win a second game in the Premier League, Ipswich are making a better effort of survival this time. A win away to Everton is the perfect kind of result they didn’t get last time.
Prediction: Everton 1 Ipswich 2
SATURDAY 3PM – NEWCASTLE v HULL
Stats: Newcastle (W2 D2) are unbeaten in their last four games v Hull, but won only of the previous eight before that. Hull (W4 D1 L1) have lost only one of their last 6 trips to Newcastle. In the 6 games between these sides in Newcastle on a Saturday, Hull have won three, drawn, and 22 goals have been scored. Newcastle have the second highest Expected Goals Against at home so far this season.
Verdict: Hull just keep defying pre season doom, which is great for promoted clubs of the future, and Newcastle will also find them hard to beat.
Prediction: Newcastle 1 Hull 1
SATURDAY 5:30PM – NOTTINGHAM FOREST v COVENTRY
Stats: Nottingham Forest haven’t scored a goal yet at home in two games, while Coventry haven’t scored a goal in any of their four games. Nottingham Forest have won six straight games at home to Coventry, they’ve scored exactly two goals in the last five of those wins. Nottingham Forest have only lost three top flight games at home to Coventry ever – W15 D7 L3. Nottingham Forest were W2 L1 at home to promoted teams last season.
Verdict: Wonder if Coventry can score a goal. Or Forest at home.
Prediction: Nottingham Forest 2 Coventry 0
SUNDAY 2PM – LEEDS v CRYSTAL PALACE
Stats: The last two games at Leeds between these sides have seen 11 goals. Leeds have won seven of the last eight games at home to Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace lead the Sunday H2H by 4-1 (and a draw) and have won the only Sunday game at Leeds. Leeds won one of eight Sunday games last season, Crystal Palace won five of 16.
Verdict: Leeds scoring for fun, Crystal Palace conceding for other people’s fun.
Prediction: Leeds 4 Crystal Palace 2
SUNDAY 2PM – MANCHESTER CITY v SUNDERLAND
Stats: Man City are unbeaten in their last 11 games v Sunderland (W9 D2). Man City are unbeaten in their last 15 home game v Sunderland (W13 D2) and the most recent loss was last century in 1998. Man City have scored three of more goals in eight of the last ten home games v Sunderland, where the other two games still saw them score twice. Man City have won all four home games on a Sunday v Sunderland. Sunderland were reasonably competitive on a Sunday last season (W5 D3 L2) with nearly as many points per game as Man City’s W8 D3 L3.
Verdict: The Premier League don’t like Sunderland much. Arsenal and Man City either side of their first European game in decades.
Prediction: Man City 3 Sunderland 1
SUNDAY 2PM – BOURNEMOUTH v LIVERPOOL
Stats: There have been six draws between these teams in a combined eight games so far this season – just one has been 0-0. But only one of the 22 Premier League clashes between these sides has ended in a draw. Liverpool have a W19 D3 L3 record overall v Bournemouth, but Bournemouth did win the last game at home to Liverpool. In the nine games at Bournemouth in the Premier League between these sides, Liverpool have won six and lost three but scored 24 goals.
Verdict: Draw of the Week
Prediction: Bournemouth 1 Liverpool 1
SUNDAY 4:30PM – FULHAM v MANCHESTER UTD
Stats: Man Utd have lost just four of the 38 Premier League games v Fulham since 1992 – W27 D7 L4. Man Utd are unbeaten in their last ten trip to Fulham (W8 D2) and last season’s match was a draw. Man Utd have never lost a Sunday game to Fulham W8 D3. Man Utd’s Sunday record last season (W9 D2 L3) was the best for Points per Game. Fulham’s Sunday record wasn’t too bad W3 D4 L3.
Verdict: Of all the games to have finishing the round before an extended International break. Just about any game would be better.
Prediction: Fulham 0 Man Utd 2
