Setting the scene – QUALIFYING

On a such a boring track it should be no surprise that Mercedes take pole and Russell is the driver to do that, because let’s face it, he’s a bit dull. Former team mate Lewis Hamilton was his nearest chaser in second. Only Kimi Antonelli was the other driver under 1 min 15. McLaren were disappointing in 4th and 7th after some practice session speed. Charles Leclerc crashed into the barrier after running off the track and didn’t set a time in Q3. The Hulk finally made Q3 after many 11ths.

Setting the scene – RACEDAY

It is a typically hot and dry in Barcelona, at a track that usually produces the less exciting races, so isn’t the race we most look forward to. But at least it looks like a battle between multiple teams, which doesn’t happen often here.

Tyre choice is interesting with a mix of softs and medium as below. Softs to have a good start and get track position, but fade, or mediums for more strategy options.

Lap 1 – Pole sitter George Russell gets away well as does Lewis Hamilton, as does really everyone. It’s a very samey kind of first corner/first lap. Well except for Isack Hadjar, he’s down in 14th somehow. Charles Leclerc has made up a little from his Qualifying gaffe to rise to 7th on the first lap from 10th.

Lap 4 – Four laps in and the Barcelona spread is already beginning. Each car with a close enough gap, but not close enough to be worried about. Although Lewis Hamiutlon’s/Ferrari choice of soft tyre is seeing him caught by Kimi Antonelli. Meanwhile George Russell is 2.5 second ahead and doing it comfortably.

Lap 6 – First piece of excitement, if you can call it that, which we don’t, is Lance Stroll reporting an issue with the car and he heads for pitlane and probably prefers that outcome. A geneuine point of interest shown on the TV coverage was Charles Leclerc almost running up the back of Oscar Piastri at turn one. Piastri’s lack of speed surprising the Ferrari driver who has had problems with braking lately.

Lap 8 – Leclerc has identified the lack of Piastri pace, and he sweeps past around the outside of the McLaren and into 6th.

Lap 11 – We’ve just woken up from the first micro nap of the race and not much has changed since last being awake. The snooze caused by the track’s nature and the amount of late nights working on the Football World Cup which you can follow our work here.

Lap 12 – Lewis Hamilton pits to get rid of his soft tyres and he drops to 7th place. Liam Lawson also pits and his is less interesting and takes a bit longer.

Lap 13 – Leader George Russell and further back Max Verstappen both pit. Charles Leclerc rejoining ahead of Lewis Hamilton while Max Verstappen ends up behind his team mate in 9th. Lando Norris pits the next lap. All of this leaves Kimi Antonelli in the lead and comfortable, and George Russell uncomfortable on the radio thinking he’s been dudded by Mercedes strategy.

Lap 15 – Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri also pit and that’s the end of the front runners stops for the day. Except Charles Leclerc who leads for now, but pits on lap 17.

Lap 17 – Valtteri Bottas and his Cadillac are in the pits and looks like the end of his race. It could be worse, they could be Aston Martin.

Lap 20 – A point of interest for the race is the team radio from Alpine about swapping 12th and 13th positions between their drivers, with Franco Colapinto eventually moving aside for Pierre Gasly. He was understandably questioning and annoyed.

Lap 35 – Kimi Antonelli is right on the tail of his front running team mate, and they are reminded to play nice over the team radio.

Lap 36 – George Russell pits for new tyres and to get out of the way of Kimi Antonelli. He rejoins just in front of Lanco Norris in 5th.

Lap 38 – Kimi Antonelli pits for new tyres and he also rejoins in front of Lando Norris but it is close and the McLaren threatens a battle, but then the Barcelona spread takes effect. Lewis Hamilton leads the race for now.

Lap 40 – George Russell overtakes Charles Leclerc for second on track. With nothing to lose, Ferrari pits Charles Leclerc for fun and he rejoins sixth.

Lap 41 – Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin breaks down halfway around the lap, which is no surprise. Calling the Virtual Safety Car does a little, the car wasn’t that much in the way.

VITUAL SAFETY CAR CALLED

Lap 42 – This VSC has played nicely into the hands of Lewis Hamilton who gets the free pit stop from the lead, keeps the lead, then the VSC is called off to let him consolidate his lead. Lewis Hamilton is on track to win a first race under Ferrari.

Lap 44 – So the post VSC-pitstop shake up leave Lewis Hamilton four seconds in front of George Russell, Antonelli’s third place Mercedes 1.5 seconds behind Russell and Lando Norris another 1.5 second behind the Mercedes. Max Verstappen in 5th is 20 second behind Lando Norris.

Lap 49 – Lewis Hamilton is cruising in front, so he may well be concerned about the message from FIA stewards about a yellow flag infringement. He is doing so well for Ferrari in this race, seven seconds to the good to his former team and team mate George Russell and Mercedes. The battle for second might end up interesting with the cars in 2nd, 3rd and 4th have 1.2 second gaps between each other.

Lap 52 – Potential penalty investigation called off. Allowing Lewis Hamilton to cruise ahead as he pleases.

Lap 54 – Radio from McLaren to Lando Norris informing their driver that they believe Kimi Antonelli has run off the track too much and might get a five second penalty. Norris is just over a second behind, so a move up the grid is possible.

Lap 60 – Isack Hadjar pits from 8th for new tyres and potentially break up the boredom. Not long to go now.

Lap 61 – Kimi Antonelli has closed to within a second of his team mate George Russell on lap 60 and they are very close going down the pit straight and Kimi is going for a move. He jinks right and so does George Russell and he almost puts Kimi onto the grass. Undeterred and with the enthusiasm of youth, he keeps his foot down and brakes late enough to take second place from Russell. They race side

Lap 63 – Kimi Antonelli is slowing, he stopping, the Mercedes has broken down with four laps to go. He pulls the car over but not safe enough so the Virtual Safety Car is called. The Championship leader is out.

Further behind Charles Leclerc is going slow, and his is self inflicted after running wide into the gravel trap. Or maybe not, the Ferrari crew aren’t doing anything. Leclerc is as good as out too.

VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR CALLED – ENDS LAP 65

FINAL LAP – A nice last lap for Lewis Hamilton as he gets to soak up the crowd well-wishing and self-satisfaction and cruise to victory, he wins by nearly 20 seconds, a first race win since 2024 and first for Ferrari. An all-British podium with George Russell and Lando Norris are there for support. Although can’t imagine George Russell will be overly thrilled. Solid race from Alpine with a best of the rest swag O points.

Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).

These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. 5 points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.

THE GREAT-EST – LEWIS HAMILTON

A first win for Ferrari for Lewis Hamilton is a big moment in his career, and he’s understandably emotional. He has had a good weekend before the race, qualifying and was comfortable racing in second. Got a bit lucky with the Virtual Safety Car, but his post pit stop speed shows he had plenty to offer. One win doesn’t justify the huge money move just yet, but a win is a joy he can afford to indulge in. He looked almost washed up after a tough first season for Ferrari in 2025, but here he is a race winner again.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

LANDO NORRIS – As good a weekend as McLaren could have had? McLaren had patches of pace over the weekend, but choked a little in qualifying. But a strong race from Lando Norris saw him pushing the Mercedes throughout the Sunday drive.

ALPINE – Double points for Alpine after both qualified outside the top ten is a decent effort.

LIAM LAWSON – Becoming a very solid collector of Q3 qualifying tickets and Championship points.

THE GRAPE-EST – BARCELONA CIRCUIT

What a shame this circuit is rotating every second year with Belgium’s classic Spa circuit. I’d much prefer a Spa-Spa rotation. The number of classic races here can be counted in kindergarten, and 2026 was another example. But I guess with the Football World Cup going on, and some distracted by that, it’s not a bad time to have this race.

DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS

VALTTERI BOTTAS – First DNF of the day and outqualified by Sergio Perez again.

ASTON MARTIN – Outqualified by Cadillac again. Unreliable too. Only upside is they have been worse.

GEORGE RUSSELL – Pole position and second in the race is not usually a disappointment, but when you see your old team mate win a race, and have your current team mate who is a decade younger muscle past like he isn’t in a second season of F1 then it’s not a great race for the confidence.

KIMI ANTONELLI – Outqualified by his team mate, which was ok with his Championship lead, and his move on George Russell in the final laps of the race was sensational. But all of that ruined by a DNF. Luckily he has a big points lead.

CHARLES LECLERC – Binned it qualifying which compromised his race. He played second fiddle to his race winning team mate. Then ran off the track in the later laps and retired. A second poor race in a row worth zero points.

OSCAR PIASTRI – Not great qualifying followed by an ordinary race. Lando Norris seemed to get a lot more out of a McLaren that wasn’t the best.

Was it a good race, loads of action, a tense ending, a surprise result or DNF, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest?

We rate the big race itself, so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.

PRE RACE ACTION (FP, QUAL, SPRINT, OFF TRACK etc) – 0 / 5

It’s the Spanish/Barcelona Grand Prix while the World Cup is on, a week after the glitz and glamour of Kim Kardashian ignoring Martin Brundle in Monaco. It barely gets duller, and still tries.

ON TRACK ACTION (RACE) – 2 / 10

Not much on track action as expected.

ANY SURPRISES? – 4 / 5

Every time the Mercedes doesn’t win a race in 2026 we should question why. Charles Leclerc binning it in qualifying was a surprise on the Saturday. An extra point for Kimi Antonelli’s late race DNF.

SEASON IMPORTANCE – 3 / 5

Does a Lewis Hamilton win mean we have a new entrant into title calculations? Continued bad luck for George Russell seems to be a Championship curse too.

ENDING – 3 / 5

Lewis Hamilton was cruising out in front so the only point of interest was the Mercedes drivers and Lando Norris is a group sort-of battling each other for 2nd, 3rd and fourth. Then came the Antonelli pass on George Russell, then Antonelli’s car breaking down a lap later.

OVERALL RATING – 12 / 30

Box ticked, race watched, the ending and Antonelli’s DNF was a bump of excitement. But now off to bed for a few hours to watch World Cup.
