WOODEN SPOONERS – State Of Origin Game 1 Headlines

0

Rugby league’s first big night of the season is done and dusted so the Wooden Spooners have a special edition of their unique look back on rugby league with the State Of Origin Game 1 Headlines.

Going beyond the scores, the State Of Origin Game 1 Headlines gives the extra insight in the big games that only the Wooden Spooners can.

All reports are unconfirmed and please contact our Legal team or Buzz Rothfield aka Hans Moleman for complaints.

JUST THREE TO GO….

Fox League/Kayo regulars are counting down the three remaining rugby league games they have to suffer on Channel Nein this year.

Occasionally these people are called Fox League snobs, but it only takes about 15 seconds of the intro to realise just how bad it is, and sadly for Channel Nein a yardstick and the progress of the coverage.

One email we received from a fan stated “I’m not sure if the Channel Nein coverage has gotten worse, or I’ve just become more cynical. Probably both, but leaning more towards the latter.”

Then there were the ads. More on that soon.

And while the Ray Warren tribute was nice and well deserved, like a good referee (not Ashley Klein) they should be unnoticed. Thankfully most of the Channel Nein FIFO viewer have no idea who actually called the game.

Although they may have picked up the repeated mentions of how intense a game this, much like a needy dog looking for pats.

In a snap poll on Twitter by our website 0.1% of the respondents stated they would be watching more than the minimum four games on Channel Nein this season, 2% said they would watch less than four game in an admirable piece of stubbornness, and 110% said they would be watching four and four only. We are looking into the poll results, and believe there has been a sporting cliche filter added in error.

It’s easy to bash Channel Nein, and to also consistently spell their name incorrect, and we will, but they also make it easy to bash them. Much like the Channel Nein Cricket Commentary team, which was the most hated Australian Sporting team in the world behind Collingwood, Channel Nein rugby league continue to operate under the belief they have the god given right to broadcast origin and know what they’re doing. Wednesday’s broadcast, which was the ultimate in style over substance proves they are on the same slide as the cricket. Although are lucky enough to not have a Michael Slater to hasten the decline.

INTERVIEWING A COACH AS HIS TEAM ARE DEFENDING IN THEIR OWN 20 METRE ZONE IS A BAD IDEA AND SHIT TV

The current Origin coaches, and especially Brad Fittler have been very generous with their time during Origin series and broadcasts, but who the hell knows why they decided to cross to the NSW coach as Queensland attacked their line.

The cross was met with the appropriate amount of distracted coach who was actually engrossed in how his team were going rather than talking to the world.

Quickly someone worked out that it was time to do something better, but just another insight in why Channel Nein are so crap.

IS KATY PERRY SHORT OF CASH?

It was always going to be a hard watch for Fox League snobs, but the Channel Nein mantra of “Too Many Ads Is Barely Enough” was even worse than anticipated. Especially in the long, long pre-game hype section.

Whilst wondering why Gus was doing the voiceover for Billy the Kid (would have made more sense to get Billy Slater to do it) and the Johns brothers McDonalds ads were reasonably low shelf, the Katy Perry all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza was the pinnacle of pain.

One wonder why on earth someone who has sold 48 million albums somehow and 135 million singles (according to Wikipedia) would need to dress up in various pieces of food.

Barry Smythe from Horse Flogging Marketing explains “Katy Perry is an international brand, and a household name, so why wouldn’t you use her to promote anything.” Which didn’t really explain why a music superstar would need to sell food delivery.

Nor do we care much more to dive deeper.

A JOHN FARNHAM REFERENCE EH?

As much as we have said that the commentary went relatively unnoticed, one particular phrase caught our attention.

When Jeremiah Nanai returned to the field after what looked like a match ending injury, the commentator whose name escapes us says “It’s the biggest comeback since John Farnham”.

It that doesn’t tell you the audience Channel Nein are going for then nothing else will.

SO IT’S OK TO SHOW SOMEONE’S EXACT MOMENT OF INJURY IN SLOW MOTION BUT NOT OTHER THINGS

Speaking of Jeremiah Nanai’s injury, we have always wondered why the broadcasters (both Subscription and Shit) feel the need to slow down the replay of an injured player to the exact moment of pain.

Funny then that Channel Nein, and others, won’t show streakers because of copycats, or limited fan interaction in case there is a finger directed at the camera or mouthed swear words, yet it is fine to show gruesome injuries. Perhaps Channel Nein should be worried about copycats for injuries too.

Perhaps they’d like a slow motion replay of our pain point last night. It was the exact moment the thumb had pressed the required digits to force Channel Nein onto our TV.

It also didn’t stop Channel Nein doing a split screen ad just to ensure the pain and ad count remained high.

ORIGIN FAN HAS UNEXPLAINED CRAVING FOR KFC

One fan watching the first State of Origin revealed exclusively to the Wooden Spooners that they ended up with an unexplained craving for KFC during the broadcast.

As intense as the game was, it didn’t match the intensity for Popcorn Chicken and a Zinger burger meal for a guy who is calling himself Dave-o.

Barry Smythe from Horse Flogging Marketing explains that the situation was a win for broadcasters and their commercial partners. Even though the Johns brothers McDonalds ad was flogged during the broadcast. We couldn’t be bothered using the generic quote this time.

Upon further research, perhaps it wasn’t all done to commercial reasons, as brief look at the photos posted to “Dave-O’s social media show a lot of empty Orange Juice bottles, despite his claims he is a Tomra recycling junkie, and his garden hose now measures just over a metre.

A Canberra man has been surprised by a pleasant exchange on YouTube this evening.

While on a WatchMojo video binge during last year’s Christmas break, Peter left a comment on the ‘Top 10 Actors Who Killed Their Career With One Movie’ video, focusing on Topher Grace’s horribly miscast role as Venom in Spider-Man 3.

Embed from Getty Images

Six months later, he got an email notification saying that someone had replied to his comment. Used to YouTube being a cesspool of toxicity, scammers, and idiots trying to out-Alpha each other, Peter braced for a nasty reply.

But, to his surprise, the reply from bigbewbs69 was cordial: “I agree mate, Spider-Man 3 was a horrible movie and Topher Grace as Venom was the worst casting choice ever! He may have been an ok Spidey, but definitely not Venom. They were just piggybacking off his That 70s Show fame. Thank God Tom Hardy has made up for it.”

Peter then spent 30 minutes building a comment thread with bigbewbs69, talking about their mutual love of Spider-Man and how good Tom Holland is in the MCU.

After the conversation ended, Peter logged off with a surprisingly good feeling.

“It was nice. Usually YouTube comments are toxic as hell, but it was good having an intelligent conversation about everyone’s favourite Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man. With a username like that, I was expecting an immature 12-year-old to brag about sleeping with my mother, but old mate knew his stuff.”

Half an hour later, Peter got another notification, but from a different user – SexySexAllDay – which brought Peter down to earth.

“Hey u 2 guys r gay 4 spider-nerd! Go and get laid and stop talkin bout stoopid made up things! U r wasting u r lives!”

Peter shrugged as downvoted the comment and logged off again.

“Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.”

This week it’s based on a State of Origin stat.

2022 NRL Round 14 Barely Interesting Stats Summary

Here we take the best points of interest for each match coming up this weekend, and share them with you for no cost. Feel free to share with friends and family.

North Queensland don’t have a very good record on a Friday. They have lost seven in a row on a Friday and 11 of their last 12. The Cowboys have won just four times since the beginning of 2019 for a win % of 18%. Lucky it’s at home though, as the Cowboys have lost all 11 of their Friday away games since 2019. For the record, the Dragons have won just 5 / 17 on a Friday since 2019.

Despite their lofty ladder position in comparison to last season, the Cowboys have lost all three home games to Sydney clubs this season and are on a six game losing streak at home to Sydney sides.

St George Illawarra have the second best record for games after Origin 1, their win % of 80% is not far away from Melbourne’s 82%.

South Sydney are on a run of six straight wins v Gold Coast. It’s also six in a row on the Gold Coast for Souths too. The Titans last win at home v Souths was in 2009.

Souths have won five in a row v Qld opposition on a Saturday.

Gold Coast Titans have won just four games out of 23 at CBUS Stadium v Sydney teams since 2018.

The Titans have played top eight opposition (table position at time of match) more than any other team this season (10 times). They have lost all ten games.

Melbourne have won four in a row v Roosters. The Roosters have scored a total of ten points in the last three contests.

Melbourne’s record v Sydney teams on a Saturday isn’t great – they have lost four of their last six.

Canberra have the worst winning record at Suncorp Stadium of any NRL team since 1998. Two of their four wins at Suncorp Stadium since 1998 have come against opposition that aren’t the Broncos. Raiders last beat Canberra at Suncorp in 2010.

The Broncos have a 67% winning record at home on a Saturday – it is their best night for that stat.

Wests Tigers have lost four in a row playing Sydney teams on a Sunday. Scoring just ten points in total in their last three. Sounds like a stat from earlier. Manly have won their last four Sunday games v Sydney teams.

Manly have won just one of six away games this season. Only the winless Gold Coast and Bulldogs (one win in seven) have a worse record.

Penrith have won all five away games this season, they are the only team with a 100% away record. No team has a 100% home record this season.

Newcastle have just one win in seven games v top eight sides this season.

Warriors have lost five in a row v Sydney teams.

Going back to 2018 the Warriors have won just six of their last 28 games on a Sunday.

Cronulla haven’t had a consecutive result since April 10.

EVERYDAY NEWS – Woman Bored by Melodramatic Dramedy

NEW YORK, NY - NOVEMBER 30: Moderator Jessica Shaw (L) and actress Lauren Graham speak onstage at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations: "Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life" on November 30, 2016 in New York City. (Photo by Paul Zimmerman/Getty Images)

A Brisbane woman has grown bored of a previously enjoyable TV show.

Sarah enjoyed the first two seasons of Netflix show The Billmores, a ‘dramedy’ set in a small American town and centering around a young mother and her teenage daughter.

But the anticipated third season has been a let down, with most of the plotlines focused around feuding family members.

“It’s ridiculous! I’ve watched a few episodes and every one has family members fighting over something dumb that happened a gazillion years ago, not talking to each other for a bit, then reuniting over coffee. Then there’s a brand new fight the next episode! Rinse and repeat.” said Sarah. “There’s enough petty dramas and fights in real life. I watch these shows to escape that crap.”

While Sarah stuck out the 12-episode third season, she ‘unfollowed’ the show on Netflix and left a scathing review on the show’s IMDB page, saying that “this once great show will die a slow death if it keeps up the boring soap opera melodrama.”

To make herself feel better, Sarah began binging Gilmore Girls for the first time, before realising that The Billmores was a blatant rip-off of that far superior show. She’s already halfway through season three of Gilmore Girls and is loving the quirky small-town drama.

”I should’ve watched the Gilmores to begin with and saved myself a lot of time! There’s a lot of conflict in the show, but it’s all realistic.”

Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of ‘The Betoota Advocate’. We swear.

WOODEN SPOONERS – The Shock NRL Team Switch

0

Worried about the (Redcliffe) Dolphins’ slow signing run, NRL boss Andrew Abdo is ready to pull off a shock team switch.

Desperate for an immediately successful fourth Queensland team, Abdo will relocate the Melbourne Storm to Redcliffe (Greater Brisbane Storm) and shift the Dolphins to Melbourne (Melbourne Dolphins).

”It’s simple economics: the Storm are already good and have so much support in Queensland that they’re basically the fourth Queensland side anyway. As for the Dolphins, we know that 95% of Victorians don’t give a toss about ‘the Rugby’, so it doesn’t matter if the Dolphins take a few years to be decent,” said Abdo.

Queenslanders were excited by the Storm’s move, with GBS to be based in Redcliffe while playing big games at Lang Park. Channel Nein staff were also elated, with the scheduling team already penning in the first GBS v Broncos Lang Park derby for the opening Friday night in 2023.

But the one Storm fan Wooden Spooners reporters found in Melbourne is quite upset.

“Rugby is f***** stupid anyway! I only started following the Storm because my beloved Melbourne Demons were garbage, but I lost interest in the Storm when the mighty Dees got good again last year. The Storm didn’t even make the grand final. Useless! I’ve already sold my Storm polo and jersey on Facebook Marketplace. Got $200 for both of them,” said the anonymous fan.

Wooden Spooners | Dial-A-Dolphin – Redcliffe Dolphins 2023 Recruitment Hotline

Dial-A-Dolphin - Redcliffe Dolphins 2023 Recruitment Hotline

Are you an off-contract rugby league or player who will be off contract soon? Looking to get the best deal for the next chapter of your rugby league journey? Well then the Wooden Spooners suggest – the Dial-A-Dolphin – Redcliffe Dolphins 2023 Recruitment Hotline.

Dial-A-Dolphin – Redcliffe Dolphins 2023 Recruitment Hotline is there for players and player managers alike to discuss their rugby league future.

Just simply Dial-A-Dolphin on 1800-WAYNE-0 and you’ll be connected with rugby league expertise.

It doesn’t matter if you genuinely want to play for the Redcliffe Dolphins in 2023 or not, the Dial-A-Dolphin – Redcliffe Dolphins 2023 Recruitment Hotline is there for your rugby league career when you need it most.

If you don’t believe us, then take a moment to listen to the below testimonials.

Dial-A-Dolphin – Redcliffe Dolphins 2023 Recruitment Hotline Testimonials

“We dialed a Dolphin, and it was the best thing that could have happened for my career. We went from low-ball contract offer from my current club, to a huge deal for one of the biggest and richest clubs in Sydney.

And to celebrate, I went on a promotional tour of podcasts and acted like a jerk to rub it into the noses of Redcliffe.

I sort of feel a bit sorry that I allegedly strung the Dolphins along for a so long that they missed out on another quality hooker, but then I sort of don’t.”

B.S. from Melbourne

“I was looking at my 2024 options and after I got a much smaller offer to extend that I think I’m worth, I quickly got my manager to Dial-A-Dolphin.

Of course with Redcliffe getting desperate to sign a big name like myself, they’re gonna throw wads of cash at me to join. This is only a good thing as it might wake up some other clubs to throw in an offer, or my current club to gimme a little more.

My manager and I can highly recommend the Dial-A-Dolphin service.

And I didn’t even have to ring the head coach himself to tell him to bugger off.”

C.M from Melbourne

“Just a mere sniff of going to Redcliffe alerted my club to give me a ridiculously long contract at my current club, where I wanted to be in the first place. And good timing too, as I took some money from the other guy the club is looking re-sign by getting in first.

Thanks Dial-A-Dolphin, I got what I needed.”

Dylan, Parramatta

“Sorry, just had to go to the toilets for a second.

The Dial-A-Dolphin service was referred to me by other big name stars, like me, and it played out beautifully.

I got more money and better conditions without having to leave home.

I never intended to move on, but glad that someone made the effort to try and get me to move.”

KP, Newcastle.

“There’s nothing like the Dial-A-Dolphin service to get my current club to get off their arse and offer me that contract extension.

A mere sniff of a Dolphins conversation and a reported sighting of me with Wayne Bennett in a coffee shop somewhere, or having a schooner at the Redcliffe Leagues Club, or just a quiet chat as we walk along the Bee Gees lane has my manager’s phone ringing hot from the football department of my current club.

Thanks Dial-A-Dolphin, I have the contract extension with a little more money and security with my current club that I wanted all along.”

Just about everyone else linked to the Dolphins

So players and player managers make sure you consider the Dial-A-Dolphin – Redcliffe Dolphins 2023 Recruitment Hotline.

With that 2023 roster deadline closing in, and Redcliffe more desperate to get a squad together, there’s never been a better time to look after your rugby league future, by stuffing up the NRL’s newest club’s own future.

Call Dial-A-Dolphin today….

Barely Interesting State of Origin 1 Preview

0
state of origin 1 2022 preview

The biggest game in rugby league is almost here, and a big game deserves a big preview, so our Barely Interesting State of Origin 1 Preview is here for all.

Our Barely Interesting State of Origin 1 Preview is much like our weekly NRL previews – lots of barely interesting facts, some colourful visuals, and took a long time to do.

Some of the stats might get you interested, or change your bet for the big game, or settle an argument or two. Or fill in a second or two on a lazy Sunday morning.

Either way the Barely Interesting State of Origin 1 Preview is ready for those who love their stats.

STATE OF ORIGIN 1 PREVIEW – GAME STATS

MATCHES IN SYDNEY

NSW have won the last three games in Sydney – which means Queensland haven’t won in Sydney since 2017. For the record – Jarryd Hayne and Tim Glasby payed in this match.

However, Queensland have won the last two games in Sydney where it was the first match of the series.

NSW Won 14 out of 15 games in Sydney from 1990 to 2006 on a Wednesday.

WEDNESDAY’S NEWS

Queensland hold the overall advantage for Wednesday State of Origin games 43-36. However, NSW hit the front 21-11 for Wednesday games in Sydney.

For something more obscure, in the last 12 State of Origin games on a Wednesday, the winner has scored between 18 and 22 points on nine occasions. The average margin for these nine games was six points.

MARGIN OF ERROR

Here are some barely interesting facts on which day and game has the closest margins.

Day Av Margin
Mon 6.4
Tue 10.0
Wed 10.2
Thu 12.0
Fri 15.0
Sun 20.7

Game Av Margin
3 11.7
2 10.9
1 8.7

FIRST GAME WINNER

The first game record is pretty tight – after 42 years Queensland have the edge 22-20, but if you include only the three game series it’s 20 wins each.

FIRST STATE OF ORIGIN GAME IN SYDNEY

NSW didn’t host an opening game of the Series until the SFS opened in 1988. They lost all three games that season.

Sydney have only hosted the first game of the series 15 times out of 42 seasons.

For the record it is 8-7 to NSW for first game of the series wins in Sydney.

NSW beware though, Queensland win the series 6/7 when winning the first game in Sydney.

DOES WINNING THE FIRST GAME OF THE SERIES LEAD TO A SERIES WIN?

Yes, it’s pretty convincing. Out of the 40 three game series since 1982 – 30 times the team that won the first game goes onto winning the series.

But who has the better strike rate?

Out of Queensland’s 20 wins in the first game of a three game series they have gone on to win the series 16 times. For NSW it is 14/20.

The last two times the game one winner didn’t go on to win the series was in 2017 and 2019. One for each state.

WHAT’s THE POINT/S?

Well here’s a barely interesting fact if ever we’ve seen one – the average points scored in total per game.

And it’s a win for game three, as below. Probably the dead rubbers help, but not much between games one and two.

Game Avg Total Points Scored
1 30.6
2 29.9
3 36.9

NSW have the upper hand in points scored in Game One of all series. They have scored 665 points compared with Qld’s 620. It helps they won by a million points in last year’s first game we guess.

STATE OF ORIGIN 1 PREVIEW – PLAYER STATS

Was Josh Addo-Carr treated badly by missing out? Was Selwyn Cobbo the right choice over Corey Oates? Is Kalyn Ponga going better than James Tedesco? Which forward pack has more firepower? Have we missed just how good Ryan Matterson is going? Is Kurt Capewell really the Captain Plod he has been accused of?

Answers to those and many other things are available in our next section, where we compile various 2022 player stats and show them side by side by position.

2022 NRL Round 13 Barely Interesting Stats Summary

Here we take the best points of interest for each match coming up this weekend, and share them with you for no cost. Feel free to share with friends and family.

Gold Coast and North Queensland have never met on a Thursday.

Gold Coast have won four games in a row at home  v Queensland sides.

Gold Coast have played nine games this season against top eight sides (top eight at the time of the match) and have lost all of them.

North Queensland have the worst record in June since 1998 of all the NRL clubs.

Only North Queensland, Penrith and Roosters have a positive for and against v top eight teams this season.

Although more barely interesting than relevant, Penrith played three times in June in 2019, and scored 19 points in all three games. And they won all three too – two by the same score of 19-18.

The Bulldogs last win on a Friday pre-dates Coronavirus.

The 12 points the Bulldogs scored against Penrith earlier this season was 8 more than the total of their three previous meetings with the Panthers.

Manly have won nine of the last 10 matches v Warriors on a Saturday. Manly are also on a run of five straight wins on a Saturday v all teams.

Despite technically playing away for three seasons, the Warriors have won just two of their last 15 games as the designated away twam.

The Roosters have won 11 of their last 12 games on a Sunday against all teams. The only loss in that run was to Canberra.

2022 NRL Round 13 NRL Team Form O Meter

We have our own in-house way of measuring which team is going the best based on a bunch of available stats. Like Run Metres, Line Breaks, Tackle Busts, Tries, Goals, Errors, Tackles, Post Contact Metres and more.

We have also taken it to the next level with an average of the 2022 season score and last five rounds. Although, even we’re starting to doubt it given how bad Souths have played the last two weeks.

EVERYDAY NEWS – Footy WAG Controversy Falls Flat

An NRL WAG’s attempt to cause drama at her husband’s club has fallen flat.

Attempting to promote her new ‘Wellness vitamins’ and ‘Fitspo app’, Breyannaia Thompson tried creating a fake rift between her husband and his coach, hoping to piggyback off the scandal-hungry footy media.

Unfortunately, her husband plays for a ‘glamorous’ Sydney club (with Everyday News choosing to keep the player and club anonymous) and is playing good footy, so the scandal died quickly.

Even serial crank Buzz Rothfield dumped the so-called scandal when it reached the Fox League desk. “This story makes Paul Kent’s first grade career look credible. Fair dinkum. I know for a fact that [PLAYER NAME REDACTED] and his [COACH NAME REDACTED] love sharing a beer at the local pub that my minions spy at before every Team List Tuesday, so there’s nothing there. Both [PLAYER NAME REDACTED] and his [COACH NAME REDACTED] are focused on winning a premiership, and [CLUB NAME REDACTED] is one of the NRL’s darlings, so no pissy little rumour will stop that.”

A furious Breyannaia has demanded her husband move to a struggling Sydney club that easily attracts scandalous headlines, like the Wests Tigers or Canterbury-Bankstown. But she drew the line at Canberra or Newcastle, as she needed to stay in the Sydney ‘celebrity’ circles.

In a surprising twist [PLAYER NAME REDACTED] walked out on poor old Breyannaia, moving in with his teammates so he could better focus on winning the premiership.

”SO TYPICAL! That d***head cares more about his career and reputation than helping me launch my businesses! Good riddance! Now I’ll have to resort to promoting it myself via social media,” said Breyannaia. “Or maybe I’ll dump it all and go on The Real Housewives of Sydney or Big Brother?”

Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of ‘The Betoota Advocate’. We swear.
