Ray Stone vs Featured Image

The Gurgler loves a hero, and from our coverage of rugby league and in particular the Dolphins, some will know we are also huge fans of Ray Stone. Although, if he found out, he’d probably hate it. And now combining the awesome new superpower that is AI, and the nuclear fueled rugby league weapon of mass obstruction that is Ray Stone at last is the Gurgler’s All-New Comic Series Ray Stone Vs……..

In Ray Stone Vs, every episode will feature the Dolphins forward tackling some of the world’s biggest problems in the only way Ray Stone can do. Like no one can do or dares to do. Hard and low.

This time Ray Stone attempts to solve the biggest international crisis in the world right now – the War in Iran – and tries to save enough fuel to stop the world going into recession. Not that he’ll take credit for it, he’d hate that, and the attention.

0
Gurgler 4000 Celebration

A long time ago, in a simpler time I might add, The Gurgler management thought about how good it would be to have our own website to add more pointless content to an already bulging online garbage pit, and so we created The Gurgler website, and haven’t looked back. Culminating in this week’s 4000th article.

We’d like to say that more than a few questioned us when we started up The Gurgler why we were bothering, but not many did, fewer do now, but there have been times where one does question the effort vs reward, but reaching 4,000 articles is at least 3,950 more than we first thought.

The quality may have improved over the years, although many would argue not, even us at the 1am specials, but the readership hasn’t by much. But the aim to providing a different view has been ongoing.

The Gurgler has strived to complicate the simple things in life, like instead of throwing some rugby league tips on the website, we produce multiple pieces of data-heavy, mega-byte hoarding visual based articles every week. The good thing is people actually read this. And we thank them. Don’t forget to click on an ad every now and again. It’s good for the soul.

On the flip side, we over-simplify some of life’s most complex or dangerous things. Recently by harnessing the new super power of Artificial Intelligence and the buff good looks of Greg Norman in a series of cartoons where AI Grek (not Greg for potential legal reasons) Norman solves the big problems of the world at that time, or tries to Nor-mansplain complex thing as only AI Grek can do. Shirtless and with style and attitude.

For maximum narcissistic reasons, we have the full list of AI Grek Norman gear at the bottom and most of it is funny.

But it’s not always about the famous and shirtless, or semi-famous wearing overalls, The Gurgler has always had time to celebrate the forgotten and the forgettable. Never is this more evident in one of our most popular articles of all time. Helped by Channel Seven News in Brisbane running one of their flashbacks, Space City re-captured the imagination of those who could barely imagine why anyone would build such a thing. Thankfully The Gurgler was ahead of the curve and had the info ready. Just a matter of having a wedge of the internet so obscure, that when the worlds algin you occasionally get lucky. We are still waiting for the flashback on Doboy Station.

SPACE CITY

If you can’t believe that anyone would build a shopping centre made entirely of giant 5 storey high concrete domes, let alone in the outer northern suburb of Kallangur. A place previously known for a Water Tower, a tree-lined tribute to the Anzacs, and the “worst Seafood Basket in Australia” according to one local food review. But build it they did, and last it did not. But for a glorious period it was operational as the most inefficient floor spaced shopping centre in the southern hemisphere, where not even Franklins No Frills could be bothered hanging around, but its legend status by those who know, and those who discover will go on for a long time.

READ MORESPACE CITY SHOPPING CENTRE IN KALLANGUR

JERKS AND GOOD FOLK

The Gurgler has also prided itself on awards. Not for our website as there is no category for best use of AI in relation to shirtless golfers, but “Celebrating” those who deserve it least – the Jerk of the Year.

The Jerk of the Year used to be monthly, but sadly in the era of the Donald Trump presidencies, extremes on social media, and Nick Krygios suddenly becoming a voice of reason and sanity the Jerk of the Month became too depressing. So we moved it to annually.

READ MORE – JERK OF THE YEAR 2025 and Beyond

But after being accused of being too negative, too cynical, and even though they are correct, it didn’t stop us from celebrating the person who either brought us the most joy in that year, or something who we thought was a worthwhile contributor to the greater good of humanity. But mostly it was heavily biased towards our joy.

And when we say “Person of the Year”, it’s a bit loose. That’s because several winners of our Person of the Year were not actually human. Like rugby league mascots, or the Farmer from Shaun the Sheep who were Person of the Year winners. It actually says more about the state of humanity that cartoon characters and sporting mascots are more worthy winners than humans.

THE DONKEY

A recent addition to The Gurgler has been the NRL Donkey, the F1 Donkey, and the much lesser-known and short-lived Premier League Donkey. All three came from the same stable from a farm deep into Katter Country

The various sporting donkeys were introduced to combat the stats heavy, boring-as-batshit sporting content, and they have proven hugely popular. And when we say hugely popular, that is relative to the size of The Gurgler audience.

But the level of sass and cutting opinion, in addition to the wandering massively off topic has been an enjoyable side project for the folk at The Gurgler.

READ MORE: DONKEY WORK

BREAD AND BUTTER SPORTING STATS, AND OF COURSE, NEVER SLATS

As great as the donkeys are, the people from all over the world, but mostly Australia, Papua New Guinea and St Vincent and the Grenadines (which we always thought sounded like the greatest ever name for an RSL covers band), come for the stats, and stay for our array of sporting graph and visuals.

Like a drunk uncle at a party trying to be hip, we pride ourselves on providing way too much information on NRL, Formula 1, Premier League and as many sports as we can trawl the internet looking for data to dump into excel.

Plus we offer up F1 Race reviews, and followed every game of the 2022 Football World Cup, providing previews and reviews on every game. It was our greatest piece of work ever, and some pieces received fewer reads than goals. And there were 0-0 draws.

But now thousands visit each week to soak up the stats to help with their sports tipping, wagering or just added enjoyment following the game. Up until now, not one person has enquired about Slats.

And this will continue into the future for as long as we can keep our eyes open until the late hours, fueled by Red Bull and F1 replays on YouTube.

THE FUTURE

Of course AI being the buzz word of muppets around the world, the future will probably be in AI. Which works for us as it means more Greg Norman. And we can also reveal that we will be introducing another cartoon hero very soon.

Hopefully we make it to 5,000 articles and more, as it is our delightfully pointless waste of time pleasure to bring you stuff you don’t really need. Or want.

Regardless, we thank all the people who have been involved with the website over the years. Either through directly contributing, attempting to launch the short-lived Gurgler Live podcast, or providing inspiration from time to time that finds its way onto these pages and back out into the internet.

We’d thank you personally, but remain chained to the writing desk in the writing room, somewhere deep in a corner of the world near Doboy Station. Just the way we like it.

Oh, and have some Greg.

NRL | 2026 NRL Round 1 Ratings and Late Mail

Been too distracted by mega sulks from dropped NRL players? Been too crowded from a pitch invasion to read the form guide? Do you need some last-minute NRL tipping advice? Or simply want something else to blame when the tips go wrong? Either way, The Gurgler’s 2026 NRL Round 5 Ratings and Late Mail is here to deliver a little help.

In addition to our huge stable of NRL stats and tipping gear, we have used all the stats we have, smashed them against each other like atoms, and come up with a H2H rating as dangerous to the outside world as Chernobyl.

We include lots of things, and add to it as the season progresses, come up with a magic number for each team, then slice up the scores out of 100% between the two sides. The bigger the percentage, the more likely to win.

And always, Win Early, Win Often.

2026 NRL Round 5 Ratings

Here are the latest H2H ratings and winners for the big weekend of NRL action ahead.

Here are The Gurgler’s 2026 Japanese Grand Prix Ratings – our way of rating the performances on the track without causing any red flags or running into our nearest website.

We offer up a season long bunch of stats, enough to distract you until the next Grand Prix comes along, and enough to tell the story of the 2026 F1 season so far.

NRL | The NRL Donkey’s 2026 NRL Round 5 Expert Tips and Opinion

0
NRL 2026 Season Predictions

In worse condition than a Canberra Stadium, ducking for cover like a Melbourne Storm Assistant Coach, trying his best to not lash out at kids at NRL games while wondering what he’s done wrong not to be a current NRL mascot, sitting on the extended bench and not expecting to play for the good of the team, and being thanked for his service while being unceremoniously sacked, it’s time for the weekly Rugby League rant from The Gurgler’s NRL Donkey. The NRL Donkey provides his NRL Donkey’s 2026 NRL Round 5 Expert Tips as well as offers an alternative, slightly unhinged view full of sass of the world of rugby league and beyond for another week.

The NRL Donkey’s 2026 NRL Round 5 Weekly Opinion

With so much bad news going on in the world we need something good to talk about.  Or at least a distraction.

Regular readers of this weekly column, if I have any, which I probably don’t and that’s the least I deserve to be honest, will question my wish for something good to talk about. Mainly because I usually come on here every and criticise everything, continue grudges against the same people and TV Channels, and point out the flaws of life. And fair enough too, because the world is kinda awful at the moment. Between cost of living, wars, petrol shortages, MAFS, politics, News Ltd, and most things on social media there’s not a lot to cheer about.

But at least there’s rugby league. A steaming hot serve every week.

Thankfully rugby league gave us the Wests Tigers winning on Friday, putting behind them wheelbarrows full of stats saying why they can’t win to beat the Warriors in New Zealand. A bit of a shame it was the Wahs to lose, but you have to have the darkest of hearts or be Isaac Moses not to wish the Wests Tigers, or Benji Marshall or both well in 2026 and hope they make the finals. I reckon Gus would even be happy for them. Probably not Buzz. He probably hates the Wests Tigers. He seems to hate rugby league.

There I go, back to the hate.

I guess some people will find joy in the first head coach sacking in 2026, most probably Todd Payten at North Queensland who celebrated with his team beating the Melbourne Storm. Seems that North Queensland seems to be good at weathering a visiting storm. Makes sense. Although one would wonders what a Cyclone Craig Bellamy would be categorised as. And which of those BOM guys that look the same will be doing the news updates. I’m sure the BOM is like Fight Club and they are all the same person. But to cyclonic winds, maybe they should have taped the coaches box windows like they do for cyclones. Even if it wasn’t needed, it would be funny.

Without seeing the post match, I’m sure Todd Payten celebrated the win with a grimace. No, not that fat, purple thing from McDonalds.

You do have to wonder sometimes about McDonalds. Like most big companies, the face of the business is a clown, and he’s surrounded by a purple thing who should either lay off the Maccas or looks like the kind of late-night stoner that would enjoy such things that don’t appear on the menu like a Chicken McNugget McFlurry. Of course he won’t get it, as the Ice Cream machine won’t be working, leaving him to burn his mouth on the nuclear heated Beef Pies at the 7-11 nearby, then go home to watch reruns of the X Files.

Then there’s a guy who steals the merch all the time. He’s not even subtle about it, wearing convict clothing and using methods of stealing that usually get you on TV in World’s Worst Criminals. And you really have to think about why do the McDonalds characters let someone continue to hang around who steals their stuff. Maybe they know how hopeless he is as a criminal and keep him around for humour value. I guess the ringleader is a clown after all.

Of course there’s a Mayor with a cheeseburger for a head. Which seems about right knowing local councils. Well, in a few South East Queensland councils perhaps the previous character is more appropriate. If you know what I mean.

I have no problem with the bird thing that hangs out with them but do question her judgement hanging around the bunch of misfits.

Not sure how I got so deep into McDonalds in the middle of a NRL related article, but that’s what I’m told the people come here for. Or leave. Either way.

Talking of fast food, here’s my Round 5 Expert Tips which like fast food will still be underwhelming even though the expectation was lower than a snake’s rear end to begin with.

THURSDAY 8PM – DOLPHINS v MANLY @ Kayo Stadium

Imagine being the most unpopular man at Manly….

Dolphins by 22

FRIDAY 4PM – SOUTH SYDNEY v BULLDOGS

Classic Good Friday match these days, and I’d like to order loads of hate. Maybe not as much hate as on the first Good Friday, that’s a bit extreme, but a little hate. And lots of points. And some Latrell v Crichton action. And less Galvin.

Souths by 4

FRIDAY 8PM – PENRITH v MELBOURNE @ CommBank Stadium

Not even good Melbourne can stop the Panthers juggernaut, let alone the current one. Especially funny if losing three in a row makes Craig Bellamy extra mad. Although you’ll be able to hear the Storm fans moaning from here. Which is a barn in country Queensland. Katter Country (no crocs).

Penrith by 16

SATURDAY 5:30PM – ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA v NORTH QUEENSLAND @ Kogarah

Imagine being worse than the Gold Coast.

North Queensland by 8

SATURDAY 7:30PM – GOLD COAST v BRISBANE

After kicking the Dolphins out of their “home” turf for another season, the Broncos will be keen to flex those big brother muscles again this weekend. And the Titans have won one in a row, so may need a rest.

Broncos by 14

SUNDAY 2PM – SHARKS v WAHS

Somehow the Wahs defied all the stats and lost to the Tigers last weekend. I just can’t find anything interesting to say about the Sharks, so I won’t. No offence.

Wahs by 8

SUNDAY 4PM – NEWCASTLE v CANBERRA

Two teams with surprising results in either direction so far in 2026. Hard to believe that neither side are from Sydney being a 4pm Sunday game.

Newcastle by 10

MONDAY 4PM – PARRAMATTA v WESTS TIGERS

The feelgood factor should get the Tigers home. And how good to have an Easter Monday game to seal the long-er weekend. It’s what Jesus would have wanted.

Tigers by 4

2026 NRL Round 5 Bets & Best Bets

Here is our one betting special for every game this weekend.

Odds courtesy of Sportsbet and correct at time of use.

THURSDAY 8PM – DOLPHINS v MANLY @ Kayo Stadium

Dolphins -5.5 Start Second Half @ $1.89

Dolphins are unbeaten on a Thursday at Kayo Stadium and have a great Thursday record of W8 L2. Plus, . Manly’s Thursday away record isn’t great at W1 L10. But the Dolphins aren’t playing that well, and Manly will have the New Head Coach bounce, that might last for a half. Aside from last weekend, the Dolphins usually finish strong. Manly are yet to win a second half and are ordinary on a Thursday in general

FRIDAY 4PM – SOUTH SYDNEY v BULLDOGS

Total Points Under 46.5 @ $1.87

The last 13 games between these sides on Good Friday have averaged 38 points with 10/13 under 40 points. Bulldogs are averaging 15 points a game so far in 2026. Souths are averaging 19 points a game from Round Two and come off the bye this weekend and averaging 15 points per game after a bye in 2025.

FRIDAY 8PM – PENRITH v MELBOURNE @ CommBank Stadium

Penrith to Win @ $1.42

Form this good has to beat stats. Get some value for Penrith while you can.

SATURDAY 5:30PM – ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA v NORTH QUEENSLAND @ Kogarah

North Queensland to Win @ $1.70

North Queensland have won six in a row v St George Illawarra. It’s three in a row as the away side. And they have won the last two games between these sides at Kogarah. The Dragons have also extended their 2025/2026 losing streak to eight games and conceded 40 or more points in half of those losses. Cowboys have won two in a row now, and Tood Payten can breathe easier now he isn’t the first coach sacked in 2026.

SATURDAY 7:30PM – GOLD COAST v BRISBANE

Brisbane to win @ $1.22 or Reece Walsh 1+ Tries @ $1.62

Gold Coast are on an eight game losing streak v Qld sides and lost all three Qld games at home in 2025, so a win for the Titans looks unlikely. Brisbane have such a good record v Qld teams – they are on a seven game winning streak v all Qld clubs. Gold Coast did beat Brisbane three times in a row in 2023-2024, so can’t guarantee a big win for the Broncos, so chickening out with a straight H2H bet. Reece Walsh has scored six tries in five games for the Broncos v Titans.

SUNDAY 2PM – SHARKS v WAHS

Total Points Over 47.5 @ $1.82 (Total Points Band 51-60 Pts @ $3.85)

Five of the last six clashes between these sides has seen or passed 50 points. Four of the last five games at Shark Park has seen 50+ points too. Warriors scored 38 points or more in their first three games this season before dropping off last weekend. Cronulla did score 50 in their first home game of the season.

SUNDAY 4PM – NEWCASTLE v CANBERRA

Newcastle to score first @ $2.04

Newcastle have scored the first try in all four games thus far, and have a decent W2 D1 L1 first half record this season. They are fourth highest for first half points too. Canberra are winless in the first half this season (D1 L3) and average nine points less than the Knights for first half points.

MONDAY 4PM – PARRAMATTA v WESTS TIGERS

Pick Your Own Line – Wests Tigers +8.5 start @ $1.49

A quirk in the stats show that the team named as the home side has lost all three games between these sides on a Monday at CommBank Stadium. Wests Tigers looked real good last weekend, but their record against Parramatta isn’t the best – Since 2021 Parramatta lead the H2H over the Wests Tigers of W6 L3 – although not awful as the Tigers stats were heading into last weekend’s clash in New Zealand. And look how that ended up. But can you trust Wests Tigers to win? Not really.

NRL | 2026 NRL Round 4 Team of the Week & Player Stats

0

Time to separate the rugby league Wheat/Chaff or the NRL Mutton/Lamb and maybe the Burton/Flanagan for our 2026 NRL Round 4 Team of the Week & Player Stats.

First we have our Team of the Week, which takes some of the key player stats from the weekend and using various scoring methods come up with the best players in their positions from the latest round of the NRL.

Then there’s additional player stats from this weekend that was and the season that is.

It’s got more science and math, and less bias than a pair of Dally M judges.

2026 NRL Round 4 Team of the Week

We’ve used the stats for each position and picked the best starting 13 players from the most recent round, the stats and points assigned are explained at the end.

On top of the best starting 13, we also include the best four interchange players of the week. Seeing who has provided maximum impact from the bench.

And a few of the players we thought the stats were a little too harsh on. Or just super bias on players we love.

Sometimes, the stats don’t get it quite right, but they are easy to blame.

Regardless of how you spend your time, the One Minute Match Report has you just about covered.

2026 NRL Round 4 Results & Stats Summary

Here are the main stats from the latest round of NRL that can be used to solve arguments, impress that person on the train you’ve been eyeing off for months, or slowing the rise of petrol prices.

THE AGE OLD QUESTION ANSWERED

  • Before the Titans-Dragons game today, both sides had one awful stat – Gold Coast had a woeful Sunday record and St Goerge Illawarra are the worst away team in recent years. Turns out that being bad away from home is worse than being unable to win a million games in a row on a Sunday. Or that both teams aren’t very good, and neither matters.

DROUGHT OVER / GOOD TIMES OVER

  • Take your pick for the Wests Tigers, their record against the Warriors was bad (nine straight losses), away on a Friday terrible (ten straight losses) or Fridays anywhere awful (13 straight losses) and they overcome them all in style with a big win over the Warriors. Only the die-hardest of Tigers fans, and those who forgot to put tips in the tipping and got the away teams were on board.
  • Penrith conceded more than one try for the first time this season.
  • Gold Coast have broken a run of 15 losses in a row on a Sunday.

GOOD/BAD RUNS CONTINUE

  • Manly are winless, and head coachless in 2026. The last time they went winless in the first four rounds was in 2021. They went on to finish 4th in the regular season that year.
  • Manly have lost their last seven Thursday games, with a last win three years ago in March 2023.
  • Dolphins are now down 6-1 in the Battle of Brisbane H2H. Broncos are 4/4 as the home side and on Fridays.
  • Brisbane have won 11 in a row at home on a Friday v Queensland opposition
  • Newcastle won their last four Saturday away games
  • Melbourne have lost their last four games v Qld opposition.
  • Cronulla have won their last four games v Canberra on a Sunday.

SET RESTARTS / PENALTIES

Rugby League’s most talked about problem deserves its own mini section. But no more.
