NRL Round 23 Results & Stats Summary

Here are the main stats from the latest round of NRL that can be used to solve arguments, impress that person on the train you’ve been eyeing off for months, or to take to the United Nations to stop all wars.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL

  • Warriors lead the Thursday H2H at Mt Smart Stadium by 3-1.
  • The home side (either team) has won the last 6 matches between Roosters and Bulldogs.
  • Going back to 2020, the Roosters are W17 L3 as the home side on a Friday v all teams.
  • South Sydney have won 11 of their last 12 v Parramatta.
  • South Sydney have won 10 of their last 12 home games, with the two losses coming at Suncorp Stadium and Perth.

BAD LUCK STREAK CONTINUES

  • Gold Coast have lost five in a row at home to Qld sides and won just one of their last 11 games v Qld sides anywhere.
  • Bulldogs have lost 14 in a row away to Sydney clubs on a Friday, with a last win in March 2016.
  • Manly have lost five away games in a row.
  • Broncos have lost 11 of their last 12 games.
  • Broncos have lost 7 in a row on a Saturday.
  • Broncos now have the equal worst home win % with the Dragons.
  • Parramatta have lost 6 in a row and 11 of their last 12 away to Sydney teams on a Saturday.

BREAKTHROUGH

  • Dolphins won their second game of eight v Broncos.
  • Newcastle had won only two of their last 13 Sunday games away from home.
  • The Dragons had also lost nine in a row on a Sunday to Sydney teams. Plus four in a row at home on a Sunday.

IT WAS GOOD WHILE IT LASTED

  • Penrith had won 11 of their last 12 games v Warriors before this weekend.
  • Penrith had won all five Friday games this season.
  • Penrith had won all seven games v top half opposition (ladder position at time of game).
  • Canberra had won seven of their last nine home games in Canberra v non-Sydney teams.
  • Cronulla had won 11 of their last 12 games v St George Illawarra.

TEAMS THAT CAN’T WIN THE PREMIERSHIP

  • Gold Coast conceded 50 points in Round 1 v Cronulla. And Gold Coast sides don’t win things. Also not enough games left to get to the magical 50% win rate.
  • Parramatta conceded 50+ points twice. Once v Melbourne in Round 1, then against Gold Coast in Round 6. Also not enough games left to get to the magical 50% win rate.
  • Dolphins – conceded 50 points v Manly in Round 5. Conceded even more v Cronulla in Round 19.
  • Melbourne Storm – conceded 50 points v Penrith in Round 5.
  • St George Illawarra – lost 11 in a row to start season – sacked coach – lost next game conceding 62 points. Even winning their remaining games isn’t enough to make the 50% win rate needed to make finals. Have only won two games, so would have fallen short of the four in a row they need to win the compo, even if they made the finals. Which they won’t.
  • Wests Tigers can’t win the premiership after conceding 52 points against Cronulla in Round 9. And plenty more v Penrith in Round 15. And again v Canberra in Round 21. Also not enough games left to get to the magical 50% win rate.
  • Bulldogs – can beat Penrith, can’t beat two teams with a combined injury toll of 27 players over two rounds earlier in the season.
  • Broncos – no team has lost six games in a row in a season and won the Premiership. Melbourne lost five in a row in 2012 and still won the title. Also not enough games left to get to the magical 50% win rate.
  • North Queensland – conceded 82 points v Roosters in Round 22.

STATS SPECIAL – MANLY AND DRAGONS – SACKED COACH v INTERIM v FULL TIME

Both Manly and St George Illawarra sacked their coaches earlier in the 2026 NRL season, and both clubs hired an interim head coach before eventually settling on that person full time. Safe to say for one club that the interim period was much better. This is an exercise to see which direction the clubs are heading, and if the new full time option is better than the one sacked. In Manly’s case there may well be buyer’s remorse, for the Dragons it looks like progress.

All New 2026 Gurgler NRL Player Ratings

For a while now The Gurgler has been developing a Player Rating system for each NRL match, so why not test it now after one of the biggest games of the season.

We use stats and zero slats to determine a score out of ten for each player. The stats and weighting of stats change per position to make it fair. And worth noting that to get a 10/10 you have to be almost perfect in every way. A full explanation on the stats and weighting is at the end.

It will be different to our Team of the Week/Season as it is using different stats and weightings.
