Lando Norris took out the win and made it look reasonably easy in the end after Oscar Piastri had a good run for a while, and then had it all taken away through bad timing and a broken gearbox. Talking of neutral, our Hungarian Grand Prix Result Summary tries to be just that as we point out all the best and blurst the race had to offer.
This 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix Result, Laps that Matter summary, Review & Ratings gives you just enough to catch up with. With just a hint of cynicism, bias, opinion and colour. The perfect bite sized review for those who couldn’t be bothered watching live in the parts of the planet where it’s night time, or don’t have enough time regardless of time zone.
Hungarian Grand Prix Result Race Summary
Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Here’s where we capture the laps where stuff happened. We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football, but marginally more interesting.
Setting the scene – QUALIFYING
Lando Norris took pole position and his McLaren in particular looked fast throughout and deserved pole. The challenge was meant to come from Ferrari, and it did, they just couldn’t improve on the second runs in Q3, nor could many with Max Verstappen definitely not after spinning off at the final corner, and that gyration costs the two Mercedes who were slowed by Yellow Flags. Well, not slowed enough for Kimi Antonelli who received a three grid spot penalty for not slowing down enough. Lewis Hamilton also got a penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri, whose last lap was ruined by Hamilton blocking him unawares at turn one. Piastri probably wouldn’t have taken pole but a McLaren 1-2 may have been a chance. Stellar performance by Arvid Lindblad to be best of the rest again, and for Fernando Alonso who took the new version of the Aston Martin and escaped Q1 for the first time this season.

Setting the scene – RACEDAY
It is reasonably hot, so the two stop seems the most obvious choice, but who knows, some teams may get creative and go for one or three. With penalties mixing up the grid among the front runners, and the starts still a variable, it could be a really fun opening to the Hungarian GP.
Lap 1 – Lando Norris gets away well from pole position, Oscar Piastri uses the clean side of the grid to take second. Further back Max Verstappen clears both of the Ferraris for third position and one of the Mercedes made a shocking start, probably Kimi on 2026 form, although George Russell is also unlucky. (It was George Russell who is down to 20th-ish – Anti Stall is the answer).  Heading out of turn two and Lando Norris runs wide allowing his team mate Oscar Piastri into the lead, not bad for a car that qualified fifth (but started third). There was minor contact between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen over the first two corners two which is always fun and not fatal for either this time. Notable movement on the first lap sees Liam Lawson up to 8th, and Fernando Alonso has gained a spot from 16th thanks to George Russell than pure speed. The Mercedes ends lap one with only the Cadillacs behind.
ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAM LEC ANT HAD LAW LIN HUL
Lap 2 – McLarens out in front with a slower Red Bull in between them and their biggest competitor Ferrari is a dream scenario. Also good is the flying drone came that follows the cars over a section of the lap, quality stuff. It captures a vigorous battle between Verstappen and Hamilton.
Lap 5 – No change up the front, and Oscar Piastri is holding his lead at about one second as his team mate behind Norris is edging further away from the squabbling Verstappen and Hamilton, the Red Bull looks to be holding up the Ferraris just a little.
Lap 9 – Lower grid report and George Russell is up to 12th having just overtaken Esteban Ocon. Not a bad recovery from him, but you can sure imagine the dummy spitting going on over the radio given the usual amount of bitching we hear on the coverage for more minor complaints.
Lap 10 – At the front Oscar Piastri has a 1.7 second lead, and then the McLaren radio for Lando Norris comes onto the coverage where he declares he’s faster but is further behind because of dirty air. It’s probably fair enough as Lando has been by far the quicker McLaren driver all weekend, but for now he has to suck up the dirty air. Subsequent radio comms from Oscar Piastri announces that his tyres are just fine. The least happiest is Max Verstappen who hates his gear shifts. A lot of radio comms from the broadcast may be the first admission of this race being a little bit boring.
ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAM LEC ANT HAD LAW LIN HUL (RUS 11th)
Lap 14 – Lewis Hamilton pits looking for the undercut on Verstappen, he rejoins in 8th and on Arvid Lindblad’s tail, and a few corners later is ahead of the Racing Bull.
Lap 15 – Red Bull respond to the Ferrari pitstop and Max Verstappen comes in for new tyres. He leaves the pits just as Lewis Hamilton approaches turn one, the Ferrari takes a widish line and goes around any potential Verstappen challenge.
Lap 16 – Max Verstappen lines up Liam Lawson down the pit straight and he uses the slipstream to close on Lewis Hamilton just in front after also recently passing the Racing Bull car and Verstappen dives up the inside into turn one leaving braking as late as anyone would dare. As if almost happening in slow motion Lewis Hamilton doesn’t turn in and they avoid contact. Looks like Lewis Hamilton has another shift of string at the back of the Red Bull.
Lap 17 – Oscar Piastri pits from the lead as does Charles Leclerc from third. Lando Norris will have to wait a lap to pit, and with the undercuts who knows if it will cost him second place too. Piastri rejoins behind Isack Hadjar who is now third. Ahead is Lando Norris and we have almost forgotten about Kimi Antonelli.
Lap 18 – Lando Norris pits and the stop is marginally slower than others which won’t help. He rejoins ahead of the Verstappen-Hamilton battle. Ahead Oscar Piastri is still being held up by Isack Hadjar and everyone is bunching up into a nice little train. This could play into the hands of Kimi Antonelli is clean air 13 seconds ahead.
Lap 19 – Double overtake for McLaren on Isack Hadjar, Piastri into turn one and Norris out of turn two. Hadjar also plays the team game by letting Verstappen through easily and shutting the door of Hamilton. The net result is Lando Norris is much closer to Oscar Piastri than just before Piastri pit and Verstappen-Hamilton also closer to the front. Well, not including Antonelli who is still leading. Hadjar pits not long after all the fun.
ORDER – ANT PIA NOR VER HAM LEC LAW RUS LIN HAD
Lap 22 – The gap from Piastri has closed to just over ten seconds, which is good for Piastri. But Lando Norris is just half a second behind, which is bad for Piastri. Norris repeats his running wide at turn two to give Piastri a double of the lead.
Lap 23 – Kimi Antonelli pits from the lead and rejoins in 6th place and 6 seconds behind Charles Leclerc and a similar margin behind to his team mate.
Lap 27 – Lando Norris right on Piastri’s tail at the moment, half a second and less. Just waiting for the radio comms of one driver declaring they are faster. Both are faster – they have opened up quite the gap to Verstappen in third – just under five seconds.
Lap 31 – Bored of looking at the back of a Red Bull, Lewis Hamilton pits but rejoins annoyingly for him behind Hadjar. Although the following lap the Ferrari is ahead. McLaren advise Piastri in front to hurry up, but Piastri tells them he can’t and the tyre has been inconsistent this stint for the Australian. Trouble for him is Norris is on the radio pushing his claims, and Norris does look faster.
Lap 33 – McLaren pit Oscar Piastri as Lewis Hamilton is tearing up the track behind, which will annoy Lando Norris who has been calling for McLaren to let him pass or take the better strategy. Piastri rejoins 5th behind Antonelli but in front of Lewis Hamilton but only 2.5 seconds, not enough for Lando Norris to pit yet? He does stay out and continues to lead.
Lap 35 – Graphic on screen shows that Norris would overtake Piastri if he pits now. He doesn’t and stays out for now. But is going fast enough still to possibly pass Piastri if he pits soon. Charles Leclerc pits from third to give Kimi Antonelli some fresh air. His race has been a little invisible but does fly past Hadjar for 6th a lap after his stop.
ORDER – NOR VER ANT PIA HAM LEC HAD RUS LAW LIN
Lap 39 – Oscar Piastri is in heavy traffic which is allowing Lando Norris to give himself a chance to still take the lead and allowing Lewis Hamilton to close in on Piastri too. Replays show contact between Sainw and Piastri as he tried to lap him. The Williams basically drives Piastri off the road, and he is understandably under investigation subsequently.
Lap 40 – Lando Norris pits from the lead and Lando Norris keeps the lead. That contact with Sainw appears to have cost the Australian. If Norris is as fast as he claims when behind Piastri, and evidence shows that he probably is, then Norris has the race in his hands, as he has pace and fresher tyres. Piastri is pissed too, thanking his team sarcastically for factoring in the traffic for his strategy. It wouldn’t have been on purpose but McLaren have been accused of favouring Lando Norris in the past. In this case, Norris does seem faster, he has opened up a decent lead over Piastri since pitting. In less interesting news for the race win, Max Verstappen pits and drops to 5th. He has soft tyres on now, which is interesting with nearly 30 laps to go.
ORDER – ANT NOR PIA HAM VER LEC HAD RUS LAW LIN
Lap 45 – Lando Norris has caught Kimi Antonelli for first on track, the Mercedes yet to pit, and Antonelli isn’t making life easy, nor should he. It seems inevitable that the McLaren will pass though. Not long later Norris is past, although it took two attempts between first and third corners. Norris now leads and there’s every sign he will disappear into the distance.
Lap 51 – Sergio Pereq is driving slow around the track, and this isn’t a judgment of the Cadillac’s pace, he actually has something wrong with his car. Suspension troubles by the looks. He’ll be the second retirement after his team mate.
Lap 52 – Lewis Hamilton is catching Oscar Piastri for third, which will make him even less happy than after losing the lead of the race.
Lap 54 – Kimi Antonelli pits for his final stop and he rejoins 6th behind Charles Leclerc. Could be some late race fun with the cars ahead. Meanwhile, Lando Norris is told to slow down in front. Piastri has the opposite worry with Lewis Hamilton continuing to close in on him.
Lap 56 – Oscar Piastri slows, and retires with gearbox problems. Sad end to a good race (of sorts) for him.
VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR CALLED
Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc all pit for new tyres.
VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR ENDS
Lap 58 – The pit stops see Kimi Antonelli right on Lewis Hamilton’s tail in a battle for third between the two Championship rivals. Questions are being asked if Lewis Hamilton was actually ahead as they arrived into the first corner together. That is answered as Hamilton lets Antonelli past.
ORDER – NOR VER ANT HAM LEC HAD RUS LIN BOR LAW
Lap 60 – Antonelli and Hamilton continue to battle, and Hamilton nearly loses it at turn two with a big fishtail.
Lap 61 – More bad news for Lewis Hamilton as he is under investigation for pitlane speeding. In other penalty news Norris is on the edge for track limits.
Lap 62 – Nice battle picked up by the broadcast between the two Racing Bulls and Nico Hulkenberg for 8th to 10th. It’ll probably end in tears, so something to look forward to.
Lap 64 – Traffic is holding up Kimi Antonelli enough for Lewis Hamilton to really close in. He needs to and needs to get past to make up time for the penalty he’ll no doubt get soon enough. This helps Verstappen who is hanging on with his soft tyres in second ahead. Five second penalty confirmed a few laps later.
FINAL LAP – Lando Norris cruises to victory, ending up 15 seconds to Verstappen in second. Kimi Antonelli claims third and Lewis Hamilton drops from fourth to fifth with the five second penalty.
FINAL ORDER (Across the line): NOR VER ANT LEC HAM HAD RUS LAW HUL LIN
Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).
These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. 5 points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.
THE GREAT-EST – LANDO NORRIS
Took pole position, and won the race. A small mistake on the first lap cost him a cruisy afternoon in front, and his team mate made him work for it for a while, but his pace was great and deserved the win.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Max VERSTAPPEN – Second place is a great result for a car which is arguably fourth fastest this weekend. His last stint was a goodun’, going long on soft tyres.
KIMI ANTONELLI – Not his best weekend, but still ended up third, increased his Championship lead over two nearest rivals.
LEWIS HAMILTON – A year before at this track Lewis Hamilton was so downcast he suggested Ferrari replace him. He was close to taking pole position, and was fast during the race when not stuck behind Verstappen. But a penalty limits his joy but still quite the improvement.
ARVID LINDBLAD – Another weekend of best of the rest, not just the leading Rookie in the field, which he also is. Although he didn’t end up taking the 8th place for the official best of the rest title, his weekend overall proved his worth.
NICO HULKENBERG – First points for the season.
FERNANDO ALONSO – The Aston Martin may be improved, but it was still a heroic effort from Alonso to escape Q1 for the first time in 2026.
THE GRAPE-EST – GEORGE RUSSELL
Not quite on the pace all weekend, then gets hit with anti stall at the start of the race dropping down to 20th. He fights back well enough to 8th soon enough, but another mediocre race weekend and loses more ground to his Championship leading team mate. Although, that gap damage was limited at least.
DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS
OSCAR PIASTRI – Whilst there will be disappointment of losing the lead, not helped by the traffic after his second pit stop, but the end result is probably better than it could be argued it looked like he was going to get earlier in the weekend. Seemed to struggle to match the ultimate pace of Norris in qualifying, Piastri was gifted two spots in qualifying due to penalties ahead, then took advantage of a mistake from his team mate and great start to lead the first half of the race. It could have been better, and then it was worse, as the McLaren broke its gearbox ending his race.
VALTTERI BOTTAS – The first DNF of the race.
SERGIO PEREQ – The second DNF of the race, and with Aston Martin improvement ran last for the race and was outqualified by Bottas too.
CARLOS Sainz – Another invisible weekend in the Williams, aside from when he ran Oscar Piastri off the track and made contact, costing the McLaren the net lead of the race. He rightfully received a penalty, which left him in danger of dropping to second last at the time.
HAAS – Slower than Aston Martin and both finish behind both Aston Martins.
Was it a good race, loads of action, a tense ending, a surprise result or DNF, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest?
We rate the big race itself, so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.
PRE RACE ACTION (FP, QUAL, SPRINT, OFF TRACK etc) – 3 / 5
Qualifying was interesting enough with a good battle with most of the top four teams in the frame. Penalties applied afterwards jumbled up the grid a little too, one caused by a spinning Verstappen. But being Hungary, it’s a lwo key race. Which is a good thing.
ON TRACK ACTION (RACE) – 6 / 10
Quite a good fun race really, with battles at the front, changing of the lead, and different strategies making it quite interesting indeed. The later laps a little dull as Norris drove off into the distance and Verstappen hung on to second on older tyres.
ANY SURPRISES? – 2 / 5
Not really. McLaren is gaining ground after a slow start to 2026, and Piastri’s breakdown is a surprise for him and McLaren, which will no doubt start more rumours.
SEASON IMPORTANCE – 2 / 5
A resurgent McLaren/Norris is probably not enough to shift the Championship dial. And despite having a trouble race, Antonelli gets a points increase on his tow nearest competitors.
ENDING – 2 / 5
A few battles to keep one interested enough. But ultimately a little dull as Norris cruised in front and others took it easy to the flag.
OVERALL RATING – 15 / 30
A real 50% race. Good enough without being a classic. One to savour though as the summer break starts for F1.\
