British Grand Prix Result Race Summary
Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Here’s where we capture the laps where stuff happened. We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football, but marginally more interesting.
Setting the scene – QUALIFYING
It could have been any of the Ferraris or Mercedes to take pole position but again the boy wonder Kimi Antonelli continues doing wonderous things and was a party pooper for the British fans who we presumed wanted a Lewis Hamitlon pole position but may have settled for a George Russell fastest lap. Charles Leclerc doubled the party pooping by taking second, in a result scoring one for the foreigner, and a nice turnaround for Leclerc after a recent dip. Brits 3rd, 4th and 6th is still good, and in rare cases of out-qualification Isack Hadjar bettered Max Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas beat Sergio Pereq, and Lace Stroll starts ahead of Fernando Alonso.

Setting the scene – RACEDAY
No rain, just hot and a full, record-breaking crowd and most will want a British win. They have a good chance, there’s plenty of UK drivers.Â
Alonso has stopped on the circuit…..the Aston Martin even less reliable than usual, but he gets it going so at least isn’t blocking the track, but heads for pitlane.
Lap 1 – It’s a great start for Ferrari as Charles Leclerc outdrags Kimi Antonelli off the line to take the lead and Lewis Hamilton helps himself to second as well. Kimi hangs onto third just in front of George Russell and the Red Bulls who have jumped ahead of the McLarens, and one of them almost wiped out the Racing Bull of Arvid Lindblad at the tight left hander after the starts. There’s contact further back, with Oscar Piastri continuing an underwhelming weekend claiming on radio he thinks he has damage, that might be a good excuse for being 19th, and Lance Stroll passing him. He does have a broken front wing and pits on lap 2. Nico Hulkenberg is a loser at the start as he so often is. At least he has his podium from last season here. The Cadillacs are up to 15th and 16th and if they can survive might threaten a point on almost 4th July. Carlos Sain has a rare good day with a good start seeing him up to 10th, which everyone can enjoy. His team mate Aleq Albon is docked ten seconds for running into Ollie Bearman at the start.

Lap 3  – The Red Bulls swap positions, no team order, just King of the Jungle stuff. Their argument is keeping Lando Norris close and the Ferraris and Mercedes distant.
Lap 5 – Quick check on the front, Charles Leclerc leads by just over a second to Lewis Hamilton, who is just under a second in front of Kimi Antonelli. The danger with two Ferraris at the front of the field for them is the potential for Ferrari to try something with strategy and ruin both races. Not much is happening elsewhere though, interest might have peaked.
Lap 7 – Bad news on two fronts for Lewis Hamilton. One is F1 bosses announce an investigation and quickly decide on a five second penalty for the Ferrari driver for jumping the start. While he thinks about that, Kimi Antonelli closes on his second place too.
Lap 11 – Bad news compounded for Lewis Hamilton on lap 11 as Kimi Antonelli overtakes Hamilton into the old first corner Copse, a corner of tremendous speed and not a normal place to overtake. Kimi is up to 2nd and four seconds behind Charles Leclerc in first.
Lap 12 – You do have to wonder with Kimi’s move into second why George Russell is so much slower than Antonelli. Not that he’s slow, in and out of the car, just he isn’t faster than an 18 year old with bugger all experience like he should be.
Lap 15 – A look further down the grid, and almost at the back is Oscar Piastri who is second last and telling the team that his hard tyres, which are meant to last until the rest of the race after early contact, are graining (not great) already. Racing Bulls continue their great run of best of the rest form, and we’ll see closer to pitstop if the team are silly enough to mention Team Orders after some arguing about that last weekend.

Lap 17 – Max Verstappen makes a great move on George Russell for fourth place around the outside of that fast corner where his team mate overtook Hamilton on. Russell fights back and almost gets him into Stowe corner on the same lap, but Verstappen slams the door in his face and they almost touch. As a bit of a haha, Verstappen pits for tyres anyway at the end of the lap. He rejoins 7th ahead of the Racing Bulls.
Lap 19 – Charles Lecerc doing a decent job in front, not even Kimi Antonelli is catching him, that gap is static at four seconds.
Lap 27 – Just over halfway in the race and only Antonelli and Lando Norris have yet to pit rom the top seven cars.
Kimi angrily tell his team not to anyone undercut him. The longer he stays out the more chance that will happen.
Lap 29 – Norris pits for new tyres and rejoins just behind Isack Hadjar in 6th. Further ahead, some sensational driving between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Hamilton makes a great move around the outside of the corner that Kimi nailed him on earlier, then they run side by side through the ultra quick esses, then George Russell overtakes him down the Hangar straight so keeps his fourth place for now.
Lap 31 – Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are at it again. Hamilton makes a great move but it uses too much battery power and Russell is back past a few corners later. It’s great racing up to a point, but then you realise it is a bit artificial. But it probably beats boring races. Kimi Antonelli is yet to pit still.

Lap 33 – Bad news for George Russell, radio from the pits that he has a slow puncture. There doesn’t seem to be much evidence of it on track, as Russell attacks Max Verstappen and almost gets past him towards the end of the lap. Lewis Hamilton also wants to join the party. It is a shame if Russell pits, as this trip of Verstappen, Russell and Hamilton all don’t appear to like each other much.
Lap 35 – George Russell pits to replace that tyre which doesn’t appear to be causing too much trouble, but as pointed out in the broadcast, Silverstone is an ultra quick track, so a flat out puncture here might hurt. Literally. It doesn’t stop Russell almost passing Verstappen again. Max pushes him wide but conveniently into a pit lane entry he wanted anyway. It leaves Lewis Hamilton as the main Verstappen annoyer for now. Russell rejoins 7th in front of the Racing Bulls and it doesn’t take long to pass Hadjar on fresh tyres. Talking of fresh tyres, Kimi Antonelli has also pit for the first time and rejoins second, but with shiny new tyres and is seven-ish second behind the leading Leclerc.
Lap 38 – To the roar of the crowd and commentary booth, Lewis Hamilton takes third from Max Verstappen. The Red Bull decides to pit quickly as a Virtual Safety Car is called as Nico Hulkenberg stops out on the circuit near the old pits, which would have been a convenient place to break down a decade ago. Hadjar and Lando Norris also pit for new tyres.
VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED & ENDS
Lap 39 – Race proper resumes with the battle for the lead the most likely to be interesting. Antonelli is now just five seconds behind and has much better tyres. Maybe Leclerc should have pit and turned the new tyre advantage back to himself. As it stands, it is inevitable Kimi will overtake him, so is a bit pointless.

Lap 42 – Kimi Antonelli is slowing…..he must be, Lance Stroll just overtook him. Kimi pits, so the team put on a new front wing for good measure and we guess will see how he goes. He drops to 5th behind his team mate. That’s the second car issue in three races for Antonelli. Although, he has plenty of points in the bank.
Lap 43 – Kimi Antonelli runs off the track and Norris gets past. Something definitely broken on the Mercedes, a left wheel shield or something. They are keeping him out for now. But he runs off the track again. It is good news for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari as Hamilton closes the Championship gap and Leclerc leads a 1-2.
Lap 44 – Mercedes confirm the issue is a shield on the left front wheel, so Kimi comes in for another pitstop and the team rip it off and throw it away, much like the Championship points being thrown away. But Kimi still has one point, as he rejoins in 10th, worth one point. Charles Leclerc leads by over 20 seconds now.
Lap 45 – Kimi Antonelli continues to tell his team there’s still something wrong with the car. They tell him to pit but he doesn’t for now. He might soon, as Franco Colapinto in 11th is closing on his tail. No point staying out if there’s no point. If you know what we’re saying. And now Kimi is getting potential penalties for the off track moments. He continues to soldier on.
Lap 48 – Big gust of dust, it’s…..we presume Lance Stroll…but no….it’s Max Verstappen, and he appears to be out. Replays of Verstappen’s moment shows him losing it as he is halfway through a fast corner. He says his car is undriveable, and although he is historically grumpy about a non-perfect car, he may have a point here.
SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED
The timing of the Safety Car is not great for Charles Leclerc. He needs to pit before the Safety Car picks him up as the leader. He just makes it and gets the same free pitstop that everyone else around him has taken. Including his team mate Lewis Hamitlon. Maybe these pitstops are pointless as there’s only three laps left. Not for George Russell, he stayed out and steals Lewis Hamilton’s second place.
ORDER – LEC RUS HAM NOR HAD LAW LIN BOR ANT COL
Lap 50 – Still behind the Safety Car, and Kimi gets a five second penalty for track limits, which stinks for him. Losing five seconds with all the cars right behind you behind the Safety Car is bad luck.
Wonder if we will get another lap. Maybe, the lapped cars are allowed to overtake. Surprisingly it includes Oscar Piastri who’s had a shocker this weekend. Seems like the Mark Webber effect hasn’t left him completely.
Safety Car is ending, with one lap to go. The sprint-est of Sprint Races.
SAFETY CAR ENDS
Hang on, the Safety Car is no longer ending. Race Control say it stays out. What a stinker.
SAFETY CAR REMAINS
FINAL LAP – The cars remain in their positions, and Mercedes have played a blinder by not pitting Lewis Hamitlon, as he takes Lewis Hamilton’s second place in the race and Championship. Not as much of a blinder as Charles Leclerc who deserves victory after a great drive away from the problems behind.
ORDER – LEC RUS HAM NOR HAD LAW LIN BOR COL GAS
Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).
These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. 5 points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.
THE GREAT-EST – CHARLES LECLERC
A great start left him out in front and looking good. Was about to be pushed hard for the win by Kimi Antonelli, but luck was oin his side today as Kimi hit problems and dropped out of contention. A welcome, and popular despite not being British.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
LEWIS HAMILTON – A good race, and probably deserved second with some great overtaking. Is back in general though, which is great for Championship battles.
LANDO NORRIS – The best he could do in a car that is certainly not in the top two.
RACING BULLS – Continue to be best of the rest, Lawson just pipping Lindblad this weekend. Double Q3 and double points with 6th and 7th. Job done.
GABRIEL BORTOLETO – Solid 8th place for Audi.
THE GRAPE-EST – KIMI ANTONELLI
Looking at a race win most likely, but encountered problems which saw him pit multiple times, drop to 10th, get a penalty for driving off the track with a broken car, and miss out on points for the second time in three races.
DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS
OSCAR PIASTRI – Not great in qualifying where he was worst of the top eight good cars. Found trouble on the first lap which required a new front wing. This meant an early tyre stop for hard tyres which didn’t work. Was lapped which is never great. Team mate gets a good haul of points in fourth.
GEORGE RUSSELL – Probably a surprise to some for being here despite finishing second, but was off the pace a little this weekend, and was moaning so badly after the race to his team and post race interview, he needs and wants a dishonorable mention.
Alexander Albon – A DNF and race of obscurity.
Max VERSTAPPEN – Was doing well to be lying third when he lost his car, calling it undriveable. Given the different cars he can drive, he’d know. Outqualified by Isack Hadjar too.
Was it a good race, loads of action, a tense ending, a surprise result or DNF, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest?
We rate the big race itself, so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.
PRE RACE ACTION (FP, QUAL, SPRINT, OFF TRACK etc) – 4 / 5
The Sprint race was good for a change, qualifying is competitive, and the atmosphere of the British GP is magnificent.
ON TRACK ACTION (RACE) – 7 / 10
Some great racing within the top 6 cars from time to time. Enough plot twists to keep one interested too.
ANY SURPRISES? – 4 / 5
Kimi Antonelli breakdown out of nowhere, Verstappen spinning off the track late in the race. So plenty of big surprise moments. Overall form related, nothing out of the ordinary.
SEASON IMPORTANCE – 4 / 5
Ferrari’s 1-3, (and should have been 1-2) is a warning that Mercedes need to keep their eyes on the ball. Which makes Kimi Antonelli’s non-point score very bad timing. Kimi is lucky he’s done so well in the earlier races with so many wins.
ENDING – 1 / 5
Despite the late action, any race that finishes behind the Safety Car sucks. So would have scored higher if they did get even one lap.
OVERALL RATING – 20 / 30
A good race overall with some big moments and potential Championship lessons. Classic Silverstone really.
