What an incredible first round of NRL action it was. Star performances, tries galore, work horses giving it their all, and everyone else in between. But which players were the best of the best you ask? We’ll let the stats do the talking and separate the Wheat/Chaff to present the 2024 NRL Round 1 Player Stats and Team of the Week.
First we have our Team of the Week, which takes some of the key player stats from the weekend and using various scoring methods come up with the best players in their positions from the latest round of the NRL.
Then there’s additional player stats from this weekend and the best of the season so far for the ultimate NRL player stats summary.
2024 NRL Round 1 Player Stats & Team of the Week
We’ve used the stats for each position and picked the best starting 13 players from the most recent round, the stats and points assigned are explained at the end.
On top of the best starting 13, we include the best four interchange players of the week. Seeing who has provided maximum impact from the bench.
Plus we throw in the players we thought were great but the stats did not with Gurgler’s Choice.

INTERESTING STATS FROM THIS ROUND
- Most of the top players for Tackle Breaks in Round 1 played in losing sides.
- Terrell May made 93 Post Contact Metres from the bench. The only player in the top ten for that stat to do so.
- Zac Lomax topped Post Contact Metres, and it was only the second time he passed 100 metres in one match for our records going back to 2022. And the other was in 2022.
- Although five errors in one game isn’t great, the most in one game according to our records going back to 2022 is eight by Jason Saab in 2022.
- Jesse Arthars’ 197 Run Metres is better than any effort in 2023.
- Reece Walsh gave away three penalties v Roosters. He gave away 15 in 2023.
- Ezra Mam topped the Missed Tackles count for Broncos v Roosters, his nine was double his 2023 average per game.
- Richie Kennar scored the first and last try in the opening game, that happened just eight times last season and was done twice by fellow Souths players.
- A clean sweep for Newcastle utility Pheonix Crossland in the match against Canberra. He gave up the most errors, missed tackles and penalties.
- That’s the third time since the start of 2023 that Addin Fonua-Blake has scored the first try. He also has scored the last try of the game twice over the same period.
