The votes are in and Optus Sport, World Cup Divers (especially France’s Lucas Hernandez after their match against Australia) & Gus Gould have won June 2018 Jerk of the Month.
Optus Sport are probably a little hard done by after they have generously and rightly given the game back to the people after their App broke and stuffed Football fans on the first crucial weekend of World Cup. Still, get it right in the first place and many of those might have stayed on for what we hope will be the final year of them broadcasting the EPL. Get it wrong, and a pissweak website like ours nominates you and you win Jerk of the Month.
Still on football, those players diving during the World Cup have been judged worth of a Jerk of the Month win. We single out France’s Lucas Hernandez for a special mention, but the award goes to all the divers in general, as their dreadful temporary injuries slowed the game and embarrassed themselves.
If you missed it, NSW won the State of Origin series. And good luck to them. No best wishes for the Channel Nein coverage which was dreadful as ever, especially the big moment of the penalty try, where Gus Gould attempted to make himself more important than the key moment of the match. A little unfair on Gus, who is a great thinker of rugby league if not the least biased commentator in sport, because the whole Channel Nein NRL coverage sucks, but happily there’s only two more games to go.
HOW YOU VOTED
2018 JERK OF THE MONTH HONOUR ROLL
Jan 2018 – David Warner
Feb 2018 – Barnaby Joyce, Anthony Mundine, Bernard Tomic
Mar 2018 – Bernard Tomic
April 2018 – Bill Cosby and MKR
May 2018 – Cricket Australia, Delta Goodrem, Todd Greenberg, Meghan Markle’s Dad
Why were they nominated….
Optus Sport
For taking over the World Cup exclusive coverage and stuffing it royal. Not anticipating that having exclusive coverage meant that a lot of people would use the app, which was the only way of watching certain games. Most frustrating was the continuing tweeting about the games without acknowledging the F— up. And it took until halfway through Sunday night/Monday morning to at least give an alternative.
They eventually covered themselves by offering the football back to SBS for the Group stage and free use of the app. But damage done, and one can only hope this slows down the progress of live streaming major sporting events exclusively.
Lucas Hernandez & All World Cup Divers
One of the reasons a lot of people don’t like soccer/football is the amount of pathetic diving and rolling around for the most minor of injuries. Hernandez took this to Arjen Robben or Jarryd Hayne levels in the match against the Socceroos. A disgrace. Same for the rest of the clowns who roll around after being clipped or breathed on by an opposition player.
Gus Gould
Against Magic Weekend. Is that because for once the Sunday afternoon game won’t be in Sydney featuring two Sydney teams. Whilst I don’t completely agree with Brisbane, would prefer a new location like the Super League do, Sydney have proven that they are unwilling to turn up for rugby league, so why should a showpiece go to them by default.
And there’s the Origin II performance…… More of that in the Weekly Gripe.
And the rest…..
Channel Nein Cricket Commentary and David Warner
Combining a supercell of Jerk, Channel Nein wanted to show how little they cared for Australian opinion over the last decade with a final hurrah of Jerkdom. Warner is totally suited to the Channel Nein commentary team, just a shame they won’t be ruining our summers from this year onwards.
Could be the last time we get to vote for the Chanel Nein Cricket Commentary team – the 2016 Jerks of the Year.
Barnaby Joyce and Vikki Campion
As if the saga wan’t enough and thought of Barnaby Joyce getting his red face worked up with some red hot intra office action, then came the $150,000 interview. Proving two things, that he craves nominations for Jerk of the Month all year long, and that Sunday night current affairs is as low as the bar gets for Australian TV. Except for ACA. You can hardly blame Vikki Campion, but she is a Jerk of the Month nomination by association.
Bernard Tomic
Warmed up nicely for a top class Jerk effort by losing to a Spanish qualifier (more on him in the Heroes of the month) who drove over 1000 km to get there with his family. Then as petulant as ever in the press conference. We anticipate big things in June, and a performance where nominations will be a mere formality.
Nick Kyrgios
Also nominated for a royal performance at Queens Club when he simulated a sex act with his water bottle. At least he will probably achieve something at Wimbledon before not being able to help himself.
VAR
Although making technically correct decisions, is it a jerk for taking some of the fun and unpredictability out of Football?
Still far more effective and accurate than The NRL Bunker.
Gus Gould

Video Ref in PNG v Fiji Game
For daring to disallow the Willie Minoga try.
Jeremy Cameron
For his coward’s elbow in the Giants-Lions game that left the Lions’ Harris Andrews with bleeding on the brain. Jerk.
Jarryd Hayne
For his half arsed performance in the Fiji v PNG, proving at least he is consistently underwhelming.
