F1 | 2024 Canadian F1 Grand Prix Preview

2025 Las Vegas F1 GP Prix-view

It’s back to North America for a quick hit and run mission in Canada for one of the best races of the season. Talking of hitting and missing, our 2024 Canadian F1 Grand Prix Preview will give you a bit of everything without promising anything ahead of the upcoming big weekend of F1.

The Gurgler’s 2024 Canadian F1 Grand Prix Preview brings some thoughts on the race itself, a few bold predictions here and there, a more than a few barely interesting stats.

Essentially a quick summary of what a casual F1 fan needs in the shortest possible time for your convenience.

It looks a b it like a fish, which suits given the track is in the middle of a river. It has a first corner/s section ready to punish over-ambition and under-talent. The fast sweepers after the start also catch out amateurs and are spectacular. There’s a couple of chicanes where overtaking is very hard but thankfully doesn’t stop people trying. And the long run into the hairpin and final chicane at the pits should produce decent overtaking opportunities.

2024 Canadian F1 Grand Prix Preview – Race Rating

F1 2023 - Fabi Preview Index Feature Image

The Gurgler does like to use some obscure drivers in our Race previews and report, so who better to use than Teo Fabi to determine a race rating system.

So before each race we give a rating out of ten for four key category that are loosely based on each letter of Teo Fabi’s surname. Don’t know who Teo Fabi is, you should.

FAST? 7/10 – It’s pretty fast, and being set in an island park in the middle of a river, there’s not much space with barriers close, so probably feels quicker than it is. But it’s still quick with some fast sweeping sections, and a long back straight-ish section, which dives into the dangerously fast Wall of Champions chicane.

ACTION? 10/10 – It’s a track where stuff happens. A difficult left-right at the start usually catches out the occasional amateur, and at the end of the lap the Wall of Champions claims as the name suggests, Champions. In between there’s barriers and fast enough corners to test the ambition and talent of the entire field. Given the Red Bull didn’t like the bumps of Monaco, Canada is only a modest improvement, and there’s more compeditive teams than ever it could be another mixed grid. Over the years we have seen a few wet races, the longest modern race ever, a safety car called because a car picked up newly laid turf in its front wing and deposited it on the back straight, races where there were two consecutive first corner prangs in the same grand prix involving the same drivers each time. Try the 1998 Canadian Grand Prix is you will.

BIG HISTORY? – 7/10 – The Canadian Grand Prix has been around since the 1960’s and was one and off until 1978 when this track became a permanent home. It occasionally drops off the calendar due to financial reasons, but is mostly a regular fixture, and a race many look forward to. Big names have won the race over the years and a few smokies too. It was of course the venue of Lewis Hamilton’s first win, which always helps the history.

INCLEMENT WEATHER? – 7/10  The Weather Channel says between a 55% and 58% chance of rain on all days over the weekend, including potential thunderstorm on Saturday. Perfect.

RACE RATING 78% – Bias here as it is one of our most favourite tracks. Like Monaco with the barriers, but just not a consistently sh!t with racing.

2023 F1 Track Stats

2024 Canadian F1 Grand Prix Preview – Stats

Want to know if your favourite driver for this weekend is a master of the track or the track is a master of them? Here then are some barely interesting facts and stats.

These visuals go back to 2000 to cover the current drivers, thanks to Fernando Alonso. The all time history goes back to 1950.

  • The Canadian Grand Prix has the third highest DNF % since 2000 at 23% of all cars that start retire. Although that drops to 10th worst and 15% since 2014.
  • The 2011 edition was a wet race and took four hours and four minutes from start to eventual finish after a red flag. It prompted a change in regulations for overall time allowed. It also forced a change in watching habits in the Australasian region, as staying up for this Grand Prix is no longer advisable.
  • All but one of the seven races since 2015 have been won by the pole sitter.
  • Five drivers have completed the perfect race triple with win from pole and fastest lap. The last was in 2017 by Sebastian Vettel.
  • Maybe it’s not a bad place for Oscar Piastri to win his first race. Six drivers have won their first race at Montreal. Including the man who the circuit is named after Gilles Villeneuve, Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo.
  • Yuki Tsunoda will surely improve in his current form, he hasn’t qualified off the back row here in two starts. Lance Stroll probably won’t improve and he hasn’t made it out of Q1 in five attempts.
  • Three drivers have never missed Q3 here – Lewis Hamilton since 2007, Esteban Ocon since 2017 and Oscar Piastri last season.
  • Lando Norris is yet to score a point in Montreal.
  • Kevin Magnussen has made six consecutive non points finishes here.

2024 State of Origin Game 1 Stats Summary

0
2025 State of Origin Game Three Stats - Featured Image

The biggest thing in rugby league is almost here, and no we’re not talking about Nelson Asofa-Solomona on stilts, it’s State of Origin time. As with any major sporting tournament or celebration The Gurgler is here to overthink and over-analyse it all with stats that may or may not matter. So talking about all that, here is our 2024 State of Origin Game 1 Stats Summary.

Whether the NRL going into reserve grade mode for the next two month is worth the State of Origin hype is debatable but diving into our 2024 State of Origin Game 1 Stats Summary certainly isn’t. We have stats, visuals, historic H2H plus we used as many stats as we think are useful to predict not only the winner, but the score. Who else offers such a service. Enjoy.

2024 State of Origin Game 1 Stats Prediction

Here’s our big ticket item before you get distracted and get sucked into the clickbait on Fox Sports – our Game 1 Predictions – which uses a lot of the stats we’ll dive into later.

2024 State of Origin Game 1 Stats - Predictor Matrix

2024 State of Origin Game 1 Stats Summary

Here we dive into the history and stats of the first game of the Origin series and games at the Sydney Olympic Stadium.

State of Origin Game 1 Record

  • Queensland have won the last three games at the Sydney Olympic Stadium which doubles as Game One of the series (2015, 2016, 2022). The Maroons have got on to win the series on all three of those occasions.
  • Three of the last four Game One not at neutral venues have been won by the away side.
  • Queensland hold the H2H of 6-5 for Game One of a season that is a leap year. Ten of those 11 times, the G1 winner has won the series.

Does a Game 1 Winner win the Series?

Well, yes they do. Mostly. One side does do it better than the other, but here are some super stats to go with.

  • When Queensland have won the first game of the Series – the Maroons have gone on to win the Series 82% of the time. For NSW that win ratio is lower at 70%. (1980/81 excluded for first game/series calculations).
  • It’s 76% overall for a G1 winner to win the series, but that drops to 72% when the first game is played at a regular home ground (not neutral).
  • It’s 100% for G1 winners to win the Series since Covid in 2020.
  • Starting in 2006, the last seven times that the first game has been played at the Olympic Stadium, Queensland have gone on to win the series that year. Regardless of if they won the first game or not.

State of Origin Record @ Sydney Olympic Stadium

NSW definitely hold the upper hand overall, but there’s a few quirks.

2024 State of Origin Ground Summary

  • NSW Blues hold a commanding 20-10 H2H record over Queensland at the Sydney Olympic Stadium. But……….every year the Maroons have won a game at the ground, regardless of game number, they have won the series.
  • The last four games between these sides when the Sydney Olympic Stadium is the first game of the series the average total points scored is 19.2.

State of Origin Other Facts

  • The average margin when the Sydney Olympic Stadium is the first game of the series is 6.1, less if you remove NSW’s 28 point win in 2002.
  • Our records show that there is only three points in it over the history of State of Origin – with NSW leading 2167 v 2164.

2024 State of Origin Game 1 Best Bet

Why waste all these stats without having a little responsible flutter. So here is our choicest Game One State of Origin multi.

EVERYDAY NEWS – The Surprise Acting Comeback

One Night Only At The Ivy LONDON, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 02: (EMBARGOED FOR PUBLICATION IN UK TABLOID NEWSPAPERS UNTIL 48 HOURS AFTER CREATE DATE AND TIME. MANDATORY CREDIT PHOTO BY DAVE M. A veteran English comedy actor is making a surprise comeback to television.

Roger Peacock, now in his early 70s, starred in numerous local sitcoms from 1975 to 2000, gaining a reputation as one of England’s most revered comedy actors.

Though he has enjoyed a comfortable semi-retirement from acting (aside from a few stage plays and some charity work) in the 24 years since.

“By the time I got to 2000, I was playing the ‘quirky older neighbour’ and would just say catchphrases,” said Roger. “I was happy to pull the pin, focus on my young family, and go back to volunteering for my local cricket club and bowl my leggies for the B grade team on the weekends.”

But it was while watching new episodes of a new murder-mystery show Crime County that Roger started getting the acting bug back.

“Now the kids have all left, Pat (his wife of 30 years) and I spent most nights happily watching TV. One night we were watching this new show Crime County and I told her, ‘I’d always wanted to be on a murder–mystery show.’ But I was usually busy with my latest sitcom and rarely got a chance to audition. Pat replied, ‘Well, why don’t you?’

After sleeping on it, Roger called his agent (Phil) and was able to get an audition for a minor role. Though it seemed to come to nothing when Phil said the audition was cancelled.

“I was pretty sad about that; I was looking forward to the thrill of auditioning again. But Phil said the directors were big fan of my sitcom work and wanted to have lunch with me instead, which intrigued me.”

After some time spent reminiscing about Roger’s old sitcoms, the reason for the lunch was revealed.

“The fellow playing the Chief Superintendent was retiring and they needed a ‘veteran and respected actor’ to replace. They said they were stunned when Phil called asking for a minor role for me,” said Roger. “I told them I’d been away from TV so long that I wanted to start small, but they insisted a small role would be ‘wasted on me’.”

While Roger said he wanted to audition for the Chief role, the directors said he didn’t need to as the role was his if he wanted it.

“Obviously Pat was the first person I told, and she scolded me for not taking it straight away. So I did.”

Roger is currently in rehearsals for the new season of Crime County and is busily taking notes while he and Pat watch it on Sunday evenings.

“I’m a little sad I can’t watch it for pleasure anymore, but on the other hand it’s exciting to be back in telly again. And in a dramatic role. I loved my time in sitcoms, but it’ll be fun to try something different.”

Here are The Gurgler’s 2024 Monaco Grand Prix Ratings – our way of rating the performances of the grandest, dullest race of the season, at least livened up with another new winner for the 2024 season.

Our G-Power Rankings goes a little bit deeper than just points scored on the Sunday and has a slightly cooler name than most. We take on board Free Practice, Qualifying, performance in relation to teammate, fastest lap, and a few more stats that are attempting to highlight a driver outperforming the car and/or thrashing their teammate.

Plus, we have a range of stats and barely interesting facts from the 2024 F1 Season so far. Not much yet, but more to come as the season progresses. So much to read in so little time.

Sky News Rehearsal For Their Special UK TV Coverage Of U.S. Election Night WASHINGTON, DC - NOVEMBER 01: Sky News gears up to provide special coverage of the U.S. Election with a rehearsal, in preparation for the special election program, AMERICA DECIDES, on Sunday, November 1 in Washington D.C. A Sydney woman has revealed her unusual part-time job: she’s a cover model for NewsCorp clickbait social media articles.

Britnee (23) is the model for the generic NewsCorp article about ‘ordinary’ Australians who are fighting the housing crisis/discovered a new wonder drug/found the ‘can’t fail’ new diet etc.

“You don’t think it’s a coincidence that the women in the cover photos are absolutely smoking hot babes?” said Britnee. “That’s ALL me! The people in the actual articles are too ugly to be on social media, so that’s where I come in. It’s the easiest job in the world: I come in, take the photos, maybe put on cute wigs or a sexy lipstick to make myself look different, then I’m done.”

While some family members have disapproved of Britnee of openly deceiving people on social media, she doesn’t care.

“I was an early bloomer, so I quickly learnt to use my looks to my advantage. Let’s just say I never had to pay for drinks when I went to uni. I know some friends who say, ‘it’s not very feminist of you’, but I don’t care. I was blessed with stunning looks and I want to make the most of them before they fade and I have to get a normal job.”

Though Britnee is using her NewsCorp contacts to forge a journalism career.

“They’re training me to be an anchor on Sky News. All I have to do is read off the autocue and look pretty, so the losers and creepy old men who watch that garbage are distracted enough not to think about how horrifying the news actually is. I studied literature at uni, I can read autocues in my sleep. It’s going to be fun!”

All eight games with all the stats you could ever want or need with added barely interesting stats to go with. Giving you a decent wrap up of all that went on in the NRL on the weekend.

2024 NRL Round 12 Stats - Bulldogs v Dargons

  • The 44-12 win for the Bulldogs was the first time they have scored over 40 points since a 40-14 win over Brisbane at the same ground in June 2016.
  • The 44 points was also the Bulldogs highest ever on a Thursday.
  • The Bulldogs are now just one of two teams with a 100% home record this season. Penrith are the other.
  • Dragons have won just one of their last nine away games v Sydney teams.
  • Dragons have lost four in a row away on a Thursday.

2024 NRL Round 12 Stats - Cowboys v Tigers

  • Wests Tigers are now on an eight game losing streak. The season’s worst current run.
  • Despite the eight game losing streak, the Tigers have conceded over 30 points just twice in that run.
  • The average points conceded by the losing side in the last three Tigers v Cowboys clash is over 60 points.
  • Wests Tigers have played Queensland teams four times this season and lost all. They join South Sydney as teams with no wins against Qld teams this season.
  • The Wests Tigers have lost six Friday games in a row and their last six away games on a Friday.
  • Cowboys games this season average 52.6 per game, which is the highest just in front of the Rabbitohs at 52.5. Newcastle games see the lowest amount of points on average with 37.2.
  • Cowboys have conceded under 20 points in a game just once this season – Round 1 v Dolphins, which was still 18 points.

2024 NRL Round 12 Stats - Sea Eagles v Storm

  • Manly have won their last three games at Brookvale v Melbourne.
  • Melbourne have now lost five games in a row away on a Friday.

2024 NRL Round 12 Stats - Raiders v Roosters

  • Canberra have now conceded 40 points or more in back to back games in Canberra.
  • Roosters have won 11 in a row away on a Saturday to non-Sydney teams.
  • Canberra’s worst day for winning % is Saturday at 45.4% (since 1998).

2024 NRL Round 12 Stats - Sharks v Panthers

  • The last three times Cronulla have scored zero points were all against Penrith.
  • Scoring zero points in the regular season doesn’t necessarily stop you winning a premiership. Penrith scored zero in 2022 as did Melbourne in 2020. Bulldogs in 2004, Newcastle in 2001 and Broncos in 2000 are the others.
  • Points weren’t the only zero for the Sharks on Saturday. They are the first team this season to not register a line break.
  • Penrith have won seven of their last eight v Cronulla.
  • It was Cronulla’s first lost this season v top half opposition.
  • Penrith have won 17 of their 19 away games on a Saturday since 2020.
  • It was the eighth time since 2020 that Penrith have kept a side scoreless.

2024 NRL Round 12 Stats - Rabbitohs v Eels

  • Souths have won seven of their last eight v Parramatta.
  • Souths have won six in a row v Parramatta on a Saturday.
  • It’s been almost a year since Souths scored 40 points – last done on June 3rd last season.
  • Parramatta have lost eight of their last nine away games.
  • Parramatta’s losing streak is now five games.

2024 NRL Round 12 Stats - Broncos v Titans

  • Gold Coast have won all four games v Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium on a Sunday.
  • Gold Coast have also won five of the last seven away games v Broncos.
  • Broncos have lost their last four Sunday games.
  • Since 2016 the Broncos have won just four of 12 homes games on a Sunday.

2024 NRL Round 12 Stats - Warriors v Titans

  • Warriors have won five of their last six at Mt Smart Stadium on a Sunday. And six of their last seven there v Qld sides on a Sunday.
  • Dolphins have now failed to win four in a row three times.
  • Herbie Farnworth’s 13 tackle breaks topped Round 12, but is only third best for single game effort in 2024.
  • Dolphins away record outside of Qld isn’t great, with a record of W2 L7.
