Premier League Gameweek 6 Summary

SATURDAY 12:30PM – ARSENAL v LEEDS

Stats: Arsenal are unbeaten in the last 15 games v Leeds going back to their last loss to them in 2003, winning 13 of that 15. Arsenal have won 6 in a row at home to Leeds too. Leeds have lost the last three games v Arsenal by a combined 13-1. Arsenal haven’t lost to Leeds on a Saturday since 1994, with 13 wins and three draws since. Leeds were a decent W2 D3 L1 away to the big 6 clubs last season.

Verdict: Arsenal looked unbeatable this season, with comparisons to previous Arsenal sides being prepared, then got Brighton-ed 3-0 before the International break. Although they had a better international break than their main competition for the title. Leeds are a welcome surprise to the upper tier of the table.

Prediction: Arsenal 2 Leeds 0

SATURDAY 3PM – ASTON VILLA v BRENTFORD

Stats: Brentford won both games v Aston Villa 1-0 last season. Prior to that this fixture sees blocks of one team go undefeated – Aston Villa 6, Brentford 7, Aston Villa 9. Last season’s win for Brentford at Aston Villa was their first in 12 attempts, although there were a lot of draws (7). Aston Villa are undefeated on a Saturday at home to Brentford (W2 D5) with the last four Saturday games at Villa being draws. Brentford have drawn both of their away games so far this season. Aston Villa have lost both of their home games this season.

Verdict: Now Aston Villa have won a game, they’ll usually go on a bit of a run. Although, playing an undefeated Brentford might not be too easy.

Prediction: Aston Villa 1 Brentford 1

SATURDAY 3PM – CHELSEA v BOURNEMOUTH

Stats: The last three games between Chelsea and Bournemouth have ended in a draw, two of them 2-2 were both at the last two Chelsea home games. Chelsea have conceded at least two goals in every game so far, and are one of four teams without a clean sheet this season, including Man Utd, Ipswich and Bournemouth. Bournemouth are yet to win a game this season, their best result is three draws, two of which were 2-2 (other 1-1). Continuing the 2-2 stats, Bournemouth’s away form to big six clubs last season was W2 D2 L2.

Verdict: Has score draw written all over it.

Prediction: Chelsea 2 Bournemouth 2

SATURDAY 3PM – IPSWICH v FULHAM

Stats: The last time Ipswich were in the Premier League both games ended in a score draw. Ipswich are yet to keep a clean sheet. Despite not winning yet, Fulham’s last two games were at least draws to Liverpool and Man Utd, they have played three of the big six already. Ipswich haven’t beaten Fulham at home since 2014, been D2 L4 since. Fulham had one of the best records v promoted sides last season with W5 L1.

Verdict: Ipswich will be eyeing off a win that only boosts their points tally but drags an established Premier League side into the relegation scrap. Fulham are doing that well to themselves being one of three teams yet to win a game.

Prediction: Ipswich 3 Fulham 1

SATURDAY 3PM – SUNDERLAND v BRIGHTON

Stats: Brighton are undefeated in their last four v Sunderland – W3 D1. Brighton are the second biggest performer for goals scored v expected goals (+3.1) and Sunderland are the second biggest underperformer (-4.1). Brighton won last season’s game at Sunderland, but before that Sunderland hasn’t lost at home to Brighton since 1981, a run of W7 D2.Brighton’s one goal in their win at Sunderland last season was the only goal across both games.

Verdict: Brighton probably didn’t want the international break given their red hot form just before it. Like most football fans.

Prediction: Sunderland 0 Brighton 0

SATURDAY 5:30PM – MANCHESTER UTD v TOTTENHAM

Stats: Man Utd have an incredible home record v Spurs on a Saturday since 1992 – W18 D1 L1. Their win rate on Saturday overall is still 71% too. Although, last year’s win over Spurs broke a run of 6 winless matches v Spurs at either ground. Spurs are yet to play a big 6 club and Man Utd haven’t scored against one in their only game. Tottenham haven’t scored away yet this season.

Verdict: Battle for most under-performing big team this season is up for grabs between these two teams, for the second time in three seasons. Wonder which one will fire their manager first.

Prediction: Man Utd 2 Tottenham 0

SUNDAY 2PM – CRYSTAL PALACE v NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Stats: The last three games, 6 of the last 7 and 7 of the last 9 games between these sides have ended in a draw. Interestingly, in that run of nine games, Nottingham Forest won the other two games. The last five games between Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest at Selhurst Park have ended in a draw. Four of them were 1-1. There have been twice as many draws as either side have had wins at Selhurst Park.

Verdict: An argument over European qualification has seen this game brew nicely into a rivalry. A game neither will want to lose and get sucked ever closer to the bottom three.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1 Nottingham Forest 1

SUNDAY 2PM – HULL v EVERTON

Stats: Since 2000, Everton have lost two of 12 games v Hull – W7 D3 L2. In the EPL, Hull have lost just one home game to Everton with a W2 D2 L1 record overall. Everton have never lost to Hull on a Sunday – W2 D1. Everton have already beaten a promoted side in the Premier League this season – Ipswich at home last match. They won only 1/6 matches v promoted sides last season – W1 D3 L2. Everton were W3 D1 L5 on a Sunday last season. Hull were W1 D1 on a Sunday last season.

Verdict: Not sure how this game didn’t make the Saturday 3pm slot. Progress for both I guess. Can’t begrudge it.

Prediction: Hull 0 Everton 1

SUNDAY 4:30PM – LIVERPOOL v MANCHESTER CITY

Stats: Results have come in pairs the last three seasons between these teams. Last season Man City won both league games, the season before it was Liverpool two wins, and the season before that both games were draws. In the Premier League era, Liverpool have a great home record v Man City – W21 D11 L3. Even since the new owners arrived for Man City in 2008 Liverpool’s home record is W11 D11 L2. On a Sunday at home, Liverpool are W8 D6 L2. Last season on a Sunday v Big 6 teams Man City were undefeated (W5 D3) and Liverpool won just once (W1 D1 L4). Man City have already played on a Sunday three times this season for three wins. Liverpool are W1 D1.

Verdict: Proper headline game of the weekend. Interesting to see how Man City react after their history caught up with them.

Prediction: Liverpool 0 Man City 2

MONDAY 8PM – COVENTRY v NEWCASTLE

Stats: Newcastle have won seven in a row v Coventry and the last three at Coventry where the last two games were League Cup and Championship. Talking Premier League since 1992, Newcastle hold the H2H advantage 10-3 with three draws. Newcastle were W3 D1 L2 v promoted teams last season.

Verdict: Coventry have won their first game, and the promoted sides are doing quite well so far and probably better than predicted as a group. Newcastle are wonderfully inconsistent.

Prediction: Coventry 1 Newcastle 2
