2025 Australian F1 Grand Prix Result Race Summary

Formula 1 heads into the summer break in better shape than in a long time, with the top of the grid having never been more competitive. This is a refreshing change from the last decade of dominant cars sandwiching the most spiteful, controversial Championship battle of all time. So while the teams take a hard-earned break The Gurgler team are just getting to work, looking at the first half of the season with our 2024 F1 Season Half Season Report.

Yes we acknowledge that the season has seen 14 races so far of 24, so this is not technically halfway through the season, but what better time to do it when there’s no race for four weeks.

Our 2024 F1 Season Half Season Report has a quick visual summary of each driver so far, with a summary and in order of our thoughts on their 2024 performance. It also features our 2024 Driver of the Year points, which is too hard to explain here in full but we assign points from all sessions over each weekend for a truer reflection of who is killing it in F1 and who is not. 2024 F1 Season Summary

A quick overview of the 2024 F1 Season so far.

2024 Belgian F1 Grand Prix Ratings - Season Summary

2024 F1 Season Half Season Report by Driver

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Verstappen

Whilst not at the 2023 levels of dominance, the Max Verstappen-Red Bull package is formidable. Max has still won half the races and he took seven poles in a row to start the season and taken two more since. He has thrashed his team mate, who hasn’t put up much of a fight, the only non win in the Race-Qualifying H2H this season was when Verstappen retired. But the field has caught up and he is not getting things his own way. In saying that he should be far enough ahead to win the Championship. But races like Hungary showed his true colours when not winning.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Norris

Has been the second best driver for most of the season, and with the McLaren looking as good as anything has an outside chance at the title. A popular win in Miami is one of eight podiums for the season, just one short of Max Verstappen. Always a factor in qualifying too. Made some bad starts in last few races which have likely cost wins. His behaviour post-race in Hungary was a little ugly.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Piastri

Got a deserved first win which has been coming, and there are many more to come. Hard to believe this is only 1.5 seasons in. It does help to have a fast car, but he is doing the job. Whilst not totally matching his team mate Lando Norris, you could argue he makes fewer mistakes than his more experience team mate. His win in Hungary the basis of that. Given the car’s pace, his improved racecraft seen in Belgium and his unflappable demeanour he is a real dark horse for the Championship. At $101 it’s worth a dollar or two. Bet early, bet often.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Leclerc

Looked the biggest rival to Max Verstappen before the McLaren and his Ferrari went in different directions of compeditiveness. Always a factor in every session usually, except the occasional shocker like in Canada, and would be good to see him in a car he doesn’t have to overdrive.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Hamilton

A bit of recency bias here, as not much to choose from any of the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers. His record against George Russell is below par but Lewis Hamilton has won two races and is looking increasingly compeditive. Although one was a gift offered up by his team mate and team. Which is a far cry from talk earlier in the season of sabotage.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Russell

Got lucky in Austria, and then unlucky in Belgium with F1 wins. The drive in Belgium was a goodun’ although one does wonder how deliberate the underweight car was. His qualifying H2H is impressive leading Lewis Hamilton 10-4.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Sainz

Good win in Australia but hit and miss since. And you’d have to wonder why he was overlooked by Mercedes and Red Bull and took so long to sort out his 2025 plans if he was universally seen as an outstanding prospect.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Alonso

The car is nowhere as good as last season, so Fernando Alonso has slipped down our best drivers list. Can still pop up and be a factor on any day, and any session, just the 2024 Aston Martin is allowing fewer of those days.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Hulkenberg

Some heroic qualifying as ever, and some very good race finishes as well, plus a likeability factor keeps the Hulk high on the list for drivers in 2024. Earned himself a contract with Sauber/Audi for 2025, but doubtful that will be a step up. For now, getting maximum from cars.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Bearman

Maybe it’s the lack of races, and therefore opportunities to stuff up that has Oliver Bearman so high on our list after just one race, but it was some kind of effort. His weekend of almost making Q3 after short notice, then out-driving some much more experienced drivers to score points on debut puts some of the dross we’ve seen from other drivers this season to shame. Luckily he has a Haas contract already sorted for 2025, as he couldn’t rely on his F2 season.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Tsunoda

Has handled the Daniel Ricciardo team mate battle and hype reasonably well. Maybe not at the first race of the season where he nearly sideswiped his team mate after the chequered flag, but overall has a healthy lead in the H2H and points over Ricciardo. But advantage is slipping away as Ricciardo fights back, and maybe the one-off speculation about the Red Bull drive has been too much a distraction.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Ricciardo

A hot and mostly cold season for Daniel Ricciardo who has driven some good races this season, notably the Maimi Sprint Race, but there has been some terrible gear in between. Japan was a first lap exit, but he was dead unlucky the next race thanks to Lance Stroll. Just that kind of season. What this season hasn’t been is one of dominance from the more experienced driver looking for the top drive. He has also yet to gain a spot from his grid slot in any race this season.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Albon

Albon has thrashed his team mate again in 2024, and he should, but you couldn’t argue he has been better in 2024 than 2023. And a much tougher team mate test awaits in 2025.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Stroll

Always hard to tell how he’s going, and hard to like enough to care. In fairness is probably doing a better job in 2024 and has done a much better job v Fernando Alonso. But it is still hard to care, even more so if his Dad recruits Adrian Newey to design the new car.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Ocon

Lucky not to have been dropped immediately after colliding with his team mate at Monaco when the team had qualified as good as they had. But if an Alpine looks like doing something slightly above mediocre, it’s feels like more often than not it will be Ocon.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Gasly

An ordinary season with the occasional blip of performance like Monaco. But generally either breaking down or midfield fodder.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Bottas

Driving probably the worst car in the field, which makes any trip to Q3 outstanding. Thrashed his team mate in qualifying. Doing what he can. Worth keeping on for Sauber, mainly because no one else will probably want to go there.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Magnussen

Last season in the sun for part two of Kevin Magnussen’s career. The feelgood return of 2023 has evaporated, and he has been generally outperformed by the Hulk. But still shows the occasional glimpse of speed, sadly the midfield is a long way behind the top four cars in 2024.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Perez

This website has been tough on Sergio Perez this season, and with good cause. You’d be hard pressed to see a driver with this level of car performing so badly. Even worse if you go back to some of last season too. His qualifying performances have been so bad recently that it drags the Red Bull stats to 4th best. As is stands they’re heading for second best in the Constructors. The fact that he was given a two year deal in the middle of a form slump tells you a lot about where the Newey-less Red Bull team will end up. Powerbrokers have kept Perez in a seat for the second half of the season, when it looked like for all money that he would be canned. He should have been.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Zhou

Potentially the most obscure F1 career since the days of Pre-Qualifying in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The car is absolutely not good enough, and Zhou extracts a mediocre level of talent out of it. Pointless describes the Championship standings and relative performance.

2024 F1 Half Season Report - Sargeant

It’s easy to pick on him, because he’s not that great, but his season is summed up when at the third race in Australia his own team took his car away to give it to a better driver – his team mate. Nuff said.

Team Mate Wars

In Formula 1, half the battle is just beating your team mate, and some are Albon-like, while other drivers are nothing more than a Perez, and some teams end up with an all-out war they can’t control. To sort out who’s on top, and who will earning the wrath of Marko, we offer up the definitive F1 2024 season stats comparison with our 2024 F1 Team-Mate Stats Wars.

Our 2024 F1 Team-Mate Stats Wars takes our usual Driver Ratings and F1 2024 Season stats to the next level, factoring in all sessions and all excuses to paint a pretty clear picture of who is succeeding or falling behind.

2024 F1 Team-Mate Stats Wars – Overall Themes

  • Sergio Perez is travelling worse than Logan Sargeant for H2H.
  • Sergio Perez is yet to beat Max Verstappen is a race where they both finish nor qualifying overall. Perez has beaten Max Verstappen in one Q1 session this season.
  • The RB team H2H is closing in. Race H2H is 4-2 to Ricciardo in the last six race and qualifying is 3-3 overall. Overall, the % gap to pole position is 0.0%.
  • The McLaren Qualifying H2H is interesting. They are the only team to feature in all 14 Q3 sessions this season. Oscar Piastri leads Q1 9-5, Lando Norris leads Q2 9-5 and Q3 by 11-3.
  • Alpine drivers have almost identical H2H qualifying records by session and one of the closest gaps for grid position. However the % pole is the second widest gaps of the teams with Ocon out in front.

Here are The Gurgler’s 2024 Belgian Grand Prix Ratings – our way of rating the performances on the track without getting disqualified.

Our G-Power Rankings goes a little bit deeper than just points scored on the Sunday and has a slightly cooler name than most. We take on board Free Practice, Qualifying, performance in relation to teammate, fastest lap, and a few more stats that are attempting to highlight a driver outperforming the car and/or thrashing their teammate.

Plus, we have a range of stats and barely interesting facts from the 2024 F1 Season so far.

NRL | The NRL Donkey’s NRL Round 22 Expert Tips and Opinion

2024 NRL Grand Final Predictions

It’s time for weekly Rugby League rant of The Gurgler’s angry man Buzz equivalent known only as the NRL Donkey, who provides his NRL Round 22 Expert Tips as well as offers an alternative, slightly unhinged view full of sass of the world of rugby league and beyond for another week.

The NRL Donkey’s NRL Round 22 Expert Tips and Weekly Rant

So the NRL finally gets over the State of Origin hype only to be overshadowed on Channel Nein by the Olympics. Sorry, I mean the swimming, then the Olympics.

There’s so many parallels between rugby league and the Olympics, most of them revolve around hopeless administration. For the NRL Bunker we have the clowns who decided to race the triathlon in the Seine River. Now I am no Water Engineer, mainly because I’m a donkey and the cheap skates in the federal government won’t give me Hecs to do the course, but using a river in a major metropolis was always going to be a bad idea. Even the pi$$poor planning for the Brisbane 2032 wouldn’t plan to do the Triathlon in the Brisbane River. Or Oxley Creek. Or even Yebri Creek and sorry for those fans in the Kallangur region holding out for an Olympic event. Sure the Brisbane 2032 will plough billions of dollars to present the worst Olympic Stadium in a Century, in the hope to have an even worse Olympics than the one in 1936 in Nazi Germany, but they wouldn’t be incapable enough to plan the Triathlon in the Brisbane River. Or at least they would ask the Brisbane City Councils to stop the City Cats. Although what a delicious extra obstacle that would be.

We think they should do it at Redcliffe – home of the mighty Dolphins. Imagine the thrill of the Olympians swimming the length of the Hornibrook Highway, then riding their bikes up and down the treeline memorial that is Anzac Avenue to the Kallangur RSL then hurrying their way out of dodge back to Redcliffe, then running along the foreshore, finishing up along that lane that has the Bee Gees statues. That’s iconic. And beamed around the world. And the headline writes itself “Stayin’ Alive to Win Gold”.

If you can think of a better place to hold a Triathlon other than the Seine River in Paris, Chernobyl, or Redcliffe, then send in your entries to gurgler.chat@gmail.com under the subject heading Gurgler Triathlon, and the best entry will win a hand drawn picture of three of our favourite Triathlon athletes of all time (list pending).

And while the Olympic is still the hot topic, what do we have to do to get a Fast Pool? If we have to endure seven days of swimming and Harvey Norman commercials featuring Ariane Titmus and her dad (who’s a Seven journalist in case you didn’t know) plus the Channel Nein rugby league commentator screaming at the TV for a second consecutive sport, then at least give us a Fast Pool.

Who on earth wants a Slow Pool? If nothing else, people want to see Aussie gold, and smashed world records. They don’t want to see winners 1.4 seconds outside the Olympic record. That’s like going to the NRL and hoping there will be only 14 points scored. It would be like people requested organisers add honey to the surface of the Monaco Grand Prix or the MCG groundstaff going on protest for a month before the Grand Final and refusing to mow or limiting long jump competitors to a five step run up. Olympic organisers need to forget about Carbon Neutral for just two weeks. Two weeks. And give us, the fans, the paying public, the consumers of Olympic sponsors product, except for Harvey Norman, up yours for having too many ads, and give us a Fast Pool.

The Fast Pool we demand and deserve.

After the swimming they can make it slow and put all the Triathlon swimmers in there at once. The pool can be as slow as it wants when there’s a 100 odd triathlon swimmers trying to swim a kilometre in a 50 metre pool all at the same time. In fact that would be very funny. And a little left field. And you can’t say the Olympic organisers don’t like left field. Look at the opening ceremony which was an all you can eat fruit buffet. They pole vaulted over left field into a new and exciting region. Left of left field. Which is rare air, like above the top shelf at a bar.

Before leaving the Olympics and heading into the NRL tipping, which should be the reason for this whole article, but so often isn’t, we should address the complaints about certain commentators at certain events. So, what were people expecting, it’s Channel Nein and they suck. Except for Peter Psaltis who is sport’s best commentator, and a close second is the voice of cycling Phil Liggett. Murray Walker would also be on the list but he sadly died a few years ago. He is still the greatest commentator of all time of any sport.

Someone who doesn’t fit that bill is Mark Taylor. For any sport, but especially diving. If there was an Olympic sport for air conditioning, and doesn’t that sound better than half of the Gymnastics, then Mark Taylor would probably still be crap at it, but he would at least have some tangible experience. But the best part of the outrage was the news headlines – one saying that “Aussie TV Royalty” was outraged. When that “Aussie TV Royalty” turned out to be former Channel 10 weatherman Tim Bailey, we saluted. And crossed off our Bingo card for TV obscurity for 2024 six months earlier than planned after crossing off Consuming Passions’ Ian Parminter in June. And people complaining about Taylor should remember, it could be worse. Even if wasn’t for legal problems they might have considered Michael Slater. Nuff said.

Nuff said too about the Olympics, onwards to the weekly tipping.

The NRL Donkey’s NRL Round 22 Expert Tips

WESTS TIGERS v NORTH QLD

Last week said anyone who tips the Tigers deserves what they get. Perhaps John Bateman didn’t tip the Tigers in the dressing room tipping comp, so he will do so now from the UK. Although he’ll probably miss the Thursday game with the time zones. The Thursday game is usually sh!t anyway. As evidenced by this week’s game. Neither of these teams have played Thursday yet this season. The last time the Cowboys came to Leichhardt they conceded more than 60 points. Being a Thursday night with the Cowboys playing, the crowd will probably only be double that score.

Tigers by 8

WAHS v PARRAMATTAHS

Parramatta are winless away from home this season. So it’s hard to imagine an away trip to Auckland will be any better. They even lost the only home game they took on the road.

Warriors by 8

DOLPHINS v ROOSTERS

Sadly the Dolphins are dying in the arse, as the saying goes, with a certain finals series looking unlikely. So Wayne Bennett will have the unbeatable record of coaching two sides in the one season to miss finals without getting sacked. Looks like the Dolphins decided they may as well make a hard game harder by shipping it over to Perth. I guess this will test the locals demand for rugby league and not just lonely North Sydney Bears fans. To be honest I quite liked the Pirates nickname that was floating around for the WA side at some point. So much you can do with that. But everyone seems to like the Bears. Except that hopeless ranger chasing Yogi Bear around in that cartoon.

Roosters by 20

GOLD COAST v BRONCOS

What a time for the Gold Coast. They have won four of their last five and face a busted arse Broncos with the chance to do a rare season double over their capital foes. This will be the biggest win for the City of the Gold Coast since the AFL announced somehow that the Brisbane Bears would play on the Gold Coast, or the sadly forgotten baseball powerhouse Daikyo Dolphins took out the ABL title in the 80’s or 90’s. What an era, Dreamworld was still cool, Warwick Capper played for the Bears, Captain Charger was a mere few years away. Lots to like. Not like the Broncos. Gorden Tallis says it’s Adam Reynolds fault and he should be dropped as captain for Patrick Carrigan. I say let them wrestle it out like a pre-season pi$$ up. Oh, they’ve already done that? Who won? Well clearly Adam Reynolds as he is the captain. Either way I disagree. The Broncos just need more Xavier Willisons.

Gold Coast by 12

MELBOURNE v DARGONS

Melbourne will give the Dragons the spanking they deserve, just so we don’t have to listen to how big a coaching genius Shane Flanno Flanagan is by his worshippers at Fox League. They’ll see a real coach is action. Although, come to think of it, both have titles via (legal dept removed).

Melbourne by 48

CRONULLA v SOUTH SYDNEY

I have sat here for 20 minutes trying to think of something clever, or funny, or warped about this game. I just can’t. It is this week’s Meh Game of the Week.

Cronulla by 5

PENRITH v NEWCASTLE

Newcastle’s spin the bottle approach to halves meets….the triple Grand Final winning combination. That’s all sorted then.

Penrith by 36

BULLDOGS v CANBERRA

Rugby league where it should be. At a suburban ground on a Sunday afternoon. If only we could dust off Ray Warren so he and Gus Gould could reminiscence and argue about it. Or not. Bulldogs are unbeaten at home, and they have a few of them over the course of the season. Given they are Bulldogs, they will defend their home with growls and bites. So that would make Canberra the Australia Post of this game. Whilst we wouldn’t past Ricky Stuart to kick a dog, or at least a weak-gutted dog, same for Hudson Young, and Corey Horsburgh if he were playing, and I’m sure Jordan Rapana would chase a stick like not many others, and Xavier Savage could outrun most dogs including those stupid Sausage dogs, overall Canberra won’t win, because they aren’t dogs.

2024 Belgian F1 Grand Prix Result Race Summary

Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Here’s where we capture the laps where stuff happened. We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football, but marginally more interesting.

Setting the sceneA wet qualifying saw Max Verstappen dominate by taking pole position by six tenths of a second, but sadly for him he took a ten place grid penalty and will start 11th. He still starts favourite for the race. Charles Leclerc inherits 1st place on the grid, and alongside him is the unfamiliar sight of Sergio Perez, the Mexican just made it into Q3 by three thousandths of a second. The previously dominant McLarens are only 4th and 5th, and hopefully have a better strategy for this race. At least this weekend they do have a faster car to worry about behind them. The Red Bull of Max Verstappen is a rocket ship, but with a more compeditive grid in 2024, will he slice through the field like in previous races and seasons?

GRID (Starting Order) – LEC PER HAM NOR PIA RUS SAI ALO OCO ALB VER (11th)

Lap 1 – Pole sitter Charles Leclerc gets away well and leads the field in and out of the first corner hairpin. Sergio Perez loses second place to a fast-starting Lewis Hamilton. Lando Norris drops a few places and ends up behind his team mate and a Ferrari and Mercedes. Max Verstappen makes a decent start from 11th and is up to 9th with a move into the final chicane.

ORDER – LEC HAM PER PIA RUS SAI NOR ALO VER ALB

Lap 2 – Max Verstappen passes Alonso for 8th, and after a failed move on Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris is only just in front of Max Verstappen in a key battle between two big chances for the race.

Lap 3 – Lewis Hamilton passes Charles Leclerc for the lead. The Ferrari almost looked like it was standing still as the Mercedes flew past. The Mercedes sets fastest lap at the end of Lap Three.

Lap 4 – The top eight cars are all within a second of each other, meaning all cars except the leader can use DRS, so the racing will be tight for a while here. It’s a nice look seeing all the cars in one view going up the Kemmel straight.

ORDER – HAM LEC PER PIA RUS SAI NOR VER ALO ALB

Lap 6 – Leader Lewis Hamilton radios his team to advise there is something down near his legs in the car. One wonder if it is the reported Mercedes sabotage or a new F1 movie based on Snakes on a Plane.

Lap 7 – Zhou’s race is more pointless than usual as is an early retirement with a lack of power.

Lap 8 – The top eight are starting to spread a little with plus one second gaps between the top four. Perez is apparently complaining about the pace of the car to his team, which is a nice reversal to usual. Nico Hulkenberg pits for new rubber already. Daniel Ricciardo and Williams drivers do so a lap later.

Lap 11 – Max Verstappen pits, going for the undercut. George Russell too is in. They come out behind 12th placed Yuki Tsunoda. Will McLaren, Ferrari respond?

Lap 12 – Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Oscar Piastri all pit. The undercut has worked for George Russell as he passes Oscar Piastri out of the pits, but the Aussie tells Russell to bugger off and takes his place back within the long straight. Piastri sets about attacking Perez.

Lap 13 – Charles Leclerc pits and rejoins ahead of Perez. Lando Norris stays out as does Carlos Sainz on hard tyres who leads the race. Oscar Piastri is flying and takes Sergio Perez at the same spot as Russell the lap before. That’s a net third place after stops. And he sets fastest lap too.

ORDER – SAI NOR HAM LEC PIA PER RUS VER MAG TSU

Lap 16 – Lando Norris pits after losing a bit of time in second place. How much time? Well he rejoins six seconds behind Max Verstappen.

Lap 17 – Red Bull give Verstappen the license to go on the attack, which will be exciting to see the fallout. Nothing straight away, except for Lando Norris setting a fastest lap behind him. Perez is backing up Russell into Verstappen, either on purpose or not. Meanwhile Norris has halved the gap to Verstappen. At the front the non-pitting Carlos Sainz still leads but Lewis Hamilton is within three seconds.

Lap 20 – Carlos Sainz pits from the lead, he went long on the hard tyres and will only stop once. He rejoins in 8th.

Lap 21 – George Russell overtakes Sergio Perez for fourth, and Red Bull pit him at the end of the lap to allow Max Verstappen through. Strange though, you’d think they would prefer Perez to stay out on track and slow Norris down. Sets up a nice battle between Norris and Verstappen, with the McLaren slightly faster.Vaping has become a popular alternative to traditional smoking, offering users a convenient way to enjoy nicotine without the harmful tar and chemicals found in cigarettes. ORDER – HAM LEC PIA RUS VER NOR SAI PER ALB OCO

Lap 25 – Just under 20 laps to go, and Lewis Hamilton is cruising out front with a two second lead to Leclerc. The rest of the top eight are starting to spread out except for Norris who remains on Verstappen’s tail. The Red Bull is not slicing through the field like a few expected. The pit window opens for the second stops.

Lap 26 – Charles Leclerc makes his second stop and rejoins behind his team mate Sainz in 7th. Further back Daniel Ricciardo is looking quite racey with some nice overtakes. Perhaps he could catch Perez and steal his seat.

Lap 27 – Lewis Hamilton pits and rejoins in front of Leclerc but behind Sainz. Oscar Piastri leads another race. And he won’t have to share this one. He “celebrates” with a fastest lap.

Lap 29 – Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen pit for new tyres. Verstappen comes out behind his team mate and Sainz a place further back. Lando Norris pits on Lap 30, and he comes out behind the two Red Bulls. The Rd Bulls swap positions half way around the lap to give Max some breathing space.

Lap 30 – Oscar Piastri pits but it is a longer one as he arrives for his pit stop too fast. Piastri comes out just in front of Max Verstappen. Lando Norris overtakes Sergio Perez down the Kemmel straight. Norris sets a fastest lap as he closes in on Max Verstappen.

ORDER – RUS HAM LEC PIA VER NOR PER SAI ALO BOT

Lap 34 – The McLarens are the faster cars at the moment with Piastri closing in on Leclerc for third place and Lando Norris continuing to push Max Verstappen.

Lap 36 – Oscar Piastri nails Charles Leclerc into the Les Combes corners for third place. They battle inside-outside for the combination of corners but Piastri makes it stick. There’s still enough time and still a small enough gap for a win. George Russell is currently leading but has one pit stop less. Four second behind is Lewis Hamilton who is five seconds ahead of Piastri. Interesting finish coming up.

ORDER – RUS HAM PIA LEC VER NOR PER SAI ALO RIC

Lap 40 – George Russell is hanging on in front of Lewis Hamilton but it won’t last long, the Brit is within a second. Piastri is within 4.5 second of Hamilton. Norris still on Verstappen’s tail. Carlos Sainz gets past Sergio Perez for seventh. Four laps to go and much to be decided.

Lap 41 – Looks like the Mercedes drivers are given the green light to race each other. Lewis within half a second, but he won’t want to take too long. Piastri under four seconds behind now.

Lap 42 – Russell still leads Hamilton as they start the third last lap, Piastri is within 2.8 seconds. Hamilton thinks about a move into Les Combes but pulls out as stays put. Piastri keeps shaving time behind them.

Lap 43 – The two Mercedes are still battling with Russell doing a super job on old tyres. No move into the usual spot again for Hamilton. Piastri is within 1.4 second now. Can the McLaren get within DRS on the last lap? Russell stays in front into the final chicane, the last lap awaits.

FINAL LAP – Hamilton locks his tyre going into the first corner, probably costing him a chance now. Piastri within DRS range. No mistakes for Mercedes now. Halfway around the final lap and Hamilton is so close, but the long sweeper might be enough for Russell to stay in front. No late dive into the final chicane from Hamilton and Russell wins. Piastri right on Hamilton’s tail as they cross the line. A great win for George Russell on old tyres on the one stop. Behind the top three fourth to sixth were close together as well.

FINAL ORDER (Across the line) – RUS HAM PIA LEC VER NOR SAI ALO OCO

Update: Some of us on certain sides of the planet needed to go to bed after the race, but a few hours later discover that George Russell was disqualified for his car being underweight. That gives Lewis Hamilton the win, Oscar Piastri second and Charles Leclerc third. In a good day for Australians, Daniel Ricciardo gets the final point. He may well get more than that come Dutch GP time. George Russell’s ratings and comments stay, as it was still a great drive.

Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).

These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.

THE GREAT-EST – GEORGE RUSSELL

Some kind of drive. Left out too long for a two stopped he changed over to a one-stop and drove a great race to keep his faster team mate behind on newer tyres.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

LEWIS HAMILTON – On track for a win at mid distance, but outdone by his team mate’s storming drive. A great return to form though, with a third straight podium.

OSCAR PIASTRI – Possibly an even better drive than his first win last weekend? Gained spots at the start again, good strategy, a few good overtakes and chased the Mercedes hard at the end. A few more laps and who knows. Another podium and closes the gap for the Championship. Given his few mistakes, could he be the title challenger from afar?

CHARLES LECLERC – Decent performance in a car that is probably fourth fastest. Inherited pole with a fine lap.

MAX VERSTAPPEN – Good damage limitation after taking a ten place grid penalty. Kept ahead of his main championship rival (for now). Took pole in the wet by six tenths of a second, so he’s still plenty fast in the right conditions.

VALTTERI BOTTAS – On track for 10th place and a point in the last third of the race. Didn’t keep it, but still better performance than usual out of his Kick/Stake/Sauber.

DANIEL RICCIARDO – After his usual dropped places at the start, he made some good overtakes, and certainly looked racier than his team mate and Sergio Perez…..nudge, nudge. Had a point for tenth until late.

THE GRAPE-EST – GUANYU ZHOU

The only retirement and pretty early. Misses out on driving around this great circuit.

DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS

LANDO NORRIS – Another wasted weekend to a degree. The McLaren is fast but qualified fifth. Made an ordinary start which gave him the worst of the strategy. Finished behind Max Verstappen and his team mate was a few more positions up the road. If he’s not careful his team mate may take all the momentum into a Championship tilt too.

SERGIO PEREZ – Had a real chance from second on the grid, with his team mate in 11th, to take control of his own destiny. He dropped through the field, and complained about the car, finishing eight and last of the fast cars. Whilst not terrible, it was also not great. Will he return from the summer break, that’s the big question for the summer holiday.

Was it a good race, loads of action, a tense ending, a surprise result or DNF, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest?

We rate the big race itself, so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.

ON TRACK ACTION – 7 / 10

Some close racing and a few good overtakes at the front of the field. Plenty of overtakes in the midfield. Close racing at the end. Good enough.

ANY SURPRISES? – 5 / 5

Mercedes winning with a 1-2 was pretty surprising on the balance for the whole weekend.

SEASON IMPORTANCE – 3 / 5

Max Verstappen stays ahead of his nearest rival, so a small gain there. The question is whether the Mercedes pace has stick around or Oscar Piastri can consistently beat Verstappen and Norris.

ENDING  8 / 10

A tense finish as the Mercedes drivers duked it out on different strategy. And Oscar Piastri was closing in fast. The race really needed another few laps.

OVERALL RATING 23 / 30

Plenty to like from the race on a circuit it’s hard not to enjoy. A pleasurable way to end the first half of the season.

EVERYDAY NEWS – The Video Game Crisis

the video game crisis

A 30-year-old man has faced an early mid-life crisis.

A proud gamer during school and university, Simon received a rude shock at a family birthday party.

“I saw my 14-year-old nephew was playing the new fighting game Blood Spawn. I heard the game was pretty hardcore, so I joined in. He destroyed me! He won eight fights in a row, but he must have gotten bored and let me win the last one. It was humiliating!” said Simon.

“I used to be a hardcore gamer. When I wasn’t studying or out with mates, I’d be playing the hardest games possible, clocking them, and bragging to anyone who’d listen how brilliant I was. Unfortunately, this was before ESports was really big, otherwise I might have had a crack at that.”

But as Simon’s accountants job took over his life, his gaming time dwindled.

“I still gamed, but I didn’t have time for the epic sessions I used to do, and I didn’t want to stay up forever on the weekends anymore. And a handful of relationships, that didn’t work out, took up a bit of time too.”

Though Simon is determined to regain his standing as an epic hardcore gamer.

“After I left the party, I went straight to the nearest EB and bought Blood Spawn. I’ve got plenty of leave up my sleeve, so I’m going to block out some time, master this bloody game, and destroy my nephew at the next family party in September. The little bugger won’t know what hit him. You’ve awoken the beast, my friend.”

WOODEN SPOONERS – The Storm Convert

The rugby league convert
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - JULY 20: Ryan Papenhuyzen of the Storm catches the ball during the round 20 NRL match between Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters at AAMI Park, on July 20, 2024, in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Kelly Defina/Getty Images)

A Melbourne man has been converted to rugby league.

Peter (usually a diehard Richmond AFL fan) was planning to go to the Tenacious D concert last Saturday night (July 20) but was at a loose end when that was cancelled, until his workmates intervened.

“I was complaining about missing the D concert and what I was going to do with the refund. Adam said he was going to the Storm game {against the Sydney Roosters} with his mates and asked if I wanted to come,” said Peter. “I’ve never gotten into the Rugby, but I thought, ‘What else am I going to do?'”

And it turns out Peter had a wonderful time.

“It was very entertaining. I didn’t know what was going on a lot of the time, but there were some nice tries and the Storm boys won, so that’s good.”

Feeling energised, Peter bought himself a brand-new Storm jersey and spent the rest of the night with Adam and his mates, who explained the rules of rugby league and the history of the Storm over a few beers.

“Adam leant me the Storm Cloud book, so that should be a good read. And the boys pulled me up quick smart on calling it ‘Rugby’ – it’s ‘rugby league’ not ‘rugby union.’ I’ll have to get used to that.”

Adam has already made plans to go to the next home game against the Dragons (Saturday August 3) and will spend the next week watching replays of the Storm’s grand final wins (including 2007 and 2009).

“My mighty Tiges will always come first, but I’m looking forward to watching the Storm more closely. The more I learn about them, the more I’m kicking myself for not supporting them earlier. Oh well, better late than never”.

F1 | 2024 Belgian F1 Grand Prix Preview

2025 Las Vegas F1 GP Prix-view

The Gurgler’s 2024 Belgian F1 Grand Prix Preview brings some thoughts on the race itself, a few bold predictions here and there, a more than a few barely interesting stats.

2024 Belgian F1 Grand Prix Preview – Race Potential Rating

F1 2023 - Fabi Preview Index Feature Image

The Gurgler does like to use some obscure drivers in our Race previews and report, so who better to use than Teo Fabi to determine a race rating system.

So before each race we give a rating out of ten for four key category that are loosely based on each letter of Teo Fabi’s surname. Don’t know who Teo Fabi is, you should.

FAST? 10/10 – Not top speed fast like the straights of Monza, but just all round fast. It’s the best high speed adventure of the season. The Eau Rouge dip and climb is worth 10 by itself.

ACTION? 8/10 – Rain or shine there is usually action. More so with rain, but not necessarily. However even if there’s no action, there’s action enough just watching these cars on this magnificent circuit.

BIG HISTORY? – 10/10 – The Belgian GP was first run in 1950 and is still going today on the parts of that original circuit. There have been big first time winners like Michael Schumacher, the biggest lap one crash in F1 history in 1998, a race which also feature a pit lane fight involving Schumacher and Coulthard. Usually only the best of the best win at Spa. Since the Belgian GP returned to the current layout of Spa in 1983, all but four races have been won a World Champion or eventual World Champion. The four have finished no worse than third in a Championship.

INCLEMENT WEATHER? – 9/10  The Weather Channel says a 45% chance of rain on the Saturday, and that’s just what we need, a slightly damp qualifying to keep the drivers honest. That reduces to just 8% chance on Sunday, but it is Spa. Any weather is possible. Even at the same time.

RACE RATING 93% Not expecting much from the track itself, but the season is shaping nicely. And those hot temperatures are the wildcard.

2023 F1 Track Stats

2024 Belgian F1 Grand Prix Preview – Stats Summary

Want to know if your favourite driver for this weekend is a master of the track or the track is a master of them? Here then are some barely interesting facts and stats.

These visuals go back to 2000 to cover the current drivers, thanks to Fernando Alonso. The all time history goes back to 1950.

  • As mentioned earlier, since 1983 when F1 returned to Spa, all but four races have been won by a World Champion or a future World Champion.
  • Valtteri Bottas has qualified 13th three years in a row.
  • Since 2000, there has been a winner of this race from 10th and 14th on the grid.
