A Melbourne man has been converted to rugby league.
Peter (usually a diehard Richmond AFL fan) was planning to go to the Tenacious D concert last Saturday night (July 20) but was at a loose end when that was cancelled, until his workmates intervened.
“I was complaining about missing the D concert and what I was going to do with the refund. Adam said he was going to the Storm game {against the Sydney Roosters} with his mates and asked if I wanted to come,” said Peter. “I’ve never gotten into the Rugby, but I thought, ‘What else am I going to do?'”
And it turns out Peter had a wonderful time.
“It was very entertaining. I didn’t know what was going on a lot of the time, but there were some nice tries and the Storm boys won, so that’s good.”
Feeling energised, Peter bought himself a brand-new Storm jersey and spent the rest of the night with Adam and his mates, who explained the rules of rugby league and the history of the Storm over a few beers.
“Adam leant me the Storm Cloud book, so that should be a good read. And the boys pulled me up quick smart on calling it ‘Rugby’ – it’s ‘rugby league’ not ‘rugby union.’ I’ll have to get used to that.”
Adam has already made plans to go to the next home game against the Dragons (Saturday August 3) and will spend the next week watching replays of the Storm’s grand final wins (including 2007 and 2009).
“My mighty Tiges will always come first, but I’m looking forward to watching the Storm more closely. The more I learn about them, the more I’m kicking myself for not supporting them earlier. Oh well, better late than never”.
