The Own Goal – The Gurgler Quick Fire preview to the UK Football League and EPL Season

0

That sure was a long three months or so. This off season didn’t have a World Cup to satisfy the football cravings over the Australian winter. So it was a diet of gossip column and rumour mills, mixed with hopes for the season ahead, and a countdown waiting for this weekend.

All the talk will be about the EPL, with any Football League talk confined to the Championship play off final, we at The Gurgler like to talk lower division UK Football. For your information we have a preview of all the three lower divisions, but since the work has already been over at Australia’s premium sports website www.theroar.com.au we have a link to their preview of the season’s ahead.

Nothing But League Review the Queensland Cup R21

0

Getting down to the business end of the Queensland Cup aka Intrust Super Cup, and there’s plenty still to play for. There’s the battle for first between the competition’s newest teams – Townsville Blackhawks and Gurgler favourite PNG Hunters. Behind them waiting on a blip is Ipswich and Wynnum. Then there’s the battle for the last two finals spots between a gaggle or myriad of teams. Although it looks more likely that it’s three with a big chance into two.

Some great games on offer too. Easts only just failed in their trip to PNG, and Redcliffe fell just short of a win at Wynnum in the Herald Cup.

But there’s so much more to know, and as ever, our friends at Nothing But League have more for you.

Eat the pudding…Find out more now

Those with nothing better to do, or no better excuse should find their way to the North Ipswich Reserve oin Saturday afternoon for what will be the must see clash of the weekend between the two most unpredictable and exciting teams in Rugby League – PNG Hunters and Ipswich Jets.

Kick to Come – The Gurgler on League

0

The NRL went all English Football this week and fired two head coaches this week with Geoff Toovey removed rom Manly and Rick Stone shown the door at Newcastle. They still have a long way to go to beat their English sporting counterparts as they get rid of around 40-50 bosses a year from their 92 managers. One club Watford have changed managers at least 4 times in 12 months, and still got promoted to EPL. Goes to show hat difference it makes.

As for who should replace them, Trent Barrett is already lined up at Manly, but the Knights could do worse than hire the super pairing of the Walker brothers. Their different approach to rugby league tactics would be a welcome and overdue arrival given how predictable the NRL has become.

The NRL also had their usual array of good (read great – read crap) news off the field with three players being stood down for issues at a junior game, and the Cowboys third party payments coming into question. As much as The Gurgler loves the Cowboys, those deals seem dodgy to say the least and the way they were quickly swept under the mat worries about the salary cap integrity.

For a good read on the Fifita Brothers incident – help yourself to this article from the Roar.

Anyway here’s our rundown of this week’s NRL games and tips for our NRL Super Multi. Combine them for maximum fun.

ROOSTERS v BULLDOGS – Fri 7:30pm
Could be closer than people think, and the removal of Reynolds from the Bulldogs might calm them down a bit. A good start to the round on a Bronco-less Friday night.
TIP – BULLDOGS +10.5 start

WESTS TIGERS v STORM – Fri 7:30pm
Nothing against the Wests Tigers but how a team that has been struggling for a while gets one of the Free to Air games does puzzle. Maybe they just like the Tigers. Hard not to like the venue, Leichhardt. A proper Rugby League grounds and where these teams should be playing. To full houses at smaller grounds, not big empty stadiums. And the game?
TIP – MELBOURNE to win

NZ v SHARKS – Sat 3pm
Hard not to write off the Warriors without Shaun Johnson after his absence left the Warriors with a large hole to fill and they capitulated in the second half to Manly. But the Warriors still have plenty of fire power to cause some finals drama, and shouldn’t be written off, yet. The Sharks continue to surprise, but that always seems to be on a Sunday afternoon. Paul Gallen resigning for next year should give the fans something to look forward to. And Queensland fans someone to boo for another year.
TIP – NZ to win

NORTH QUEENSLAND v CANBERRA – Sat 5:30pm
This one should be safe as houses for the Cowboys, pardon the pun. Canberra are much better away from home, and the NQ side weren’t that impressive for large chunks of Monday’s win over Parramatta despite ending up winning by plenty. Still looking for value and why not the second hald containing more points than the first.
TIP – SECOND HALF – More points

MANLY v BRISBANE – Sat 7:30pm
Manly are just hanging in for a finals spot, obviously no thanks to Geoff Toovey who carries the can for a disappointing 2015. Broncos change of head coach last year seems to be a masterstroke as the current master coach looks like he’s engineering another title tilt at the Broncos.
TIP – BRETT STEWART – to score a try anytime

DRAGONS v NEWCASTLE – Sun 2pm
Newcastle head into the game under interim head coach Danny Buderus who doesn’t want the head coach job full time. The Dragons sacked their coach last year, and despite early season wins seem to heading the same way as last year. They haven’t won for a while, and Newcastle’s last win was against the Titans. Although well beaten by Souths last weekend, there would have been very few teams that would have beaten them in their mood last Saturday night.
TIP – NEWCASTLE to win

SOUTHS v PENRITH – Sun 4pm
If Souths play like they did last weekend, a back to back title is plausible. But having seen enough of them this year, one would not hold their breath waiting for a consecutive good match. Penrith have plenty of injury worries, and one Inglis worry.
TIP – SOUTHS to win

GOLD COAST v PARRAMATTA – Mon 7pm.
One for the real diehards and fans. Two interesting things await. One will be whether the Titans can outdraw the FFA Cup game between Palm Beach and South Melbourne on Wednesday night just gone. My money is on the football. Secondly, as ever hen he’s on the field, Semi Radradra, League best name to say and watch play.
TIP – RADRADRA RA RA RA to score a try.

SUPER MULTI featuring all the tips combined “pays” $168.

Nothing But League reviews R20 of the Queensland Cup

0

The Gurgler can smell the Queensland Cup Grand Final series as we enter the last five rounds, and maybe we got a small taste of what could be the decider in September on the weekend.

Once again the PNG Hunters and Townsville Blackhawks played out a thriller, and once again the Hunters got the 2 points. If these teams do meet in the Grand Final then it will be entertaining at minimum for all. The Gurgler is quickly searching the internet for some Hunters merchandise for that final Sunday in September. It’s even my birthday. What a present it would be.

But there’s plenty of other teams who will have their eye on the Grand Final and all with genuine claims of being there. Easts and Ipswich consolidated their top 6 position, whilst the Wynnum Seagulls collected a rare second loss in a row.

Other teams are clinging onto hope of making the finals, and some will probably be happy the season is ending.

You can read all about it courtesy of our friends at Nothing But League.

The Hungarian GP Rixveiw – In Point Form

0

This story can also be found at The Roar – one of Australia’s Best Sporting Websites.

WOW, didn’t see that race coming. The Hungaroring belied its reputation and most of the 2015 F1 season form with a dry weather classic. There were incidents and accidents a plenty, and some great racing on and sometimes off the track.

In this world of Microwaves, Apps and Self-warming Toilet Seats, people want convenience and need to know as much as they can as soon as they can, so here presented for you is the Hungarian GP Rixview, and unlike Luca Badoer, it is in point form.

• Vettel thoroughly deserved his win as it was on pace, and seemed to be the only driver not speeding, crashing into someone, or other general misbehaviour that seemed to infect the entire field. Hard to imagine cheering on Vettel from the dark days of the Webber-Red Bull war.

• Hamilton got lucky to somehow extend his championship lead despite doing all he could to hand Nico a big haul of points.

• Rosberg blew a golden chance. His switch to Primes came during the Virtual Safety Car. Once the Real Safety Car was deployed instead and chewed up more laps, that decision was made to look a lot more defensive than it was. But it still wasn’t the move of a guy who was trying to win the race. With preservation so much on his mind, you think he could have given Ricciardo just that little bit more space, rather than give him the intimidatory chop.

• A podium for Ricciardo should be cause for celebration considering how bad their car has been this year, but he was a real chance at the win. 3rd is still a great result after getting his nosehairs clipped by Nico.

• His overtaking efforts were most welcomed, and impressive given the Renault has the power of a shopping trolley against all-conquering Mercs.

• Kvyat did well, but was certainly helped out by the Safety Car and the others tripping over themselves, which also gave him a big enough gap so that his penalty didn’t matter. Couldn’t argue with the penalty for exceeding track limits for overtaking Hamilton two lanes over.

• Big crash for Hulkenberg, with his front wing doing its best impression of a cat walking in front of you while you’re carrying your shopping bags. Is Hulkenberg the new Webber? Hopefully he gets the karmic late career rocket like Mark got.

• Karma for Fernando Alonso in his McLaren Honda, as a fifth place is just reward for attempting to push that car into pits in Saturday Qualifying. McLaren’s double points finish was a modern day miracle. Even though it’s impossible for their special golden driving boots to give them additional performance, you’d forgive them for wearing them to every race for the rest of the year.

• Kimi tried his best to save his Ferrari career in 800 metres of the main straight, but as ever got the rough end of the Ferrari reliability pineapple. Thankfully his pending replacement was as anonymous as the rumours are about him. There’s hope yet for the Iceman.

The Gurgler’s Hungarian Grand Prixview

0

They call it Monaco without the barriers, that’s a bit unfair. Sure there’s no glitz and glamour and multitude of clichés, but the Hungarian GP has….well enough, and with a back catalogue of processions and less overtaking than a carousel, Monaco is hardly more exciting on the track.

Not a great deal in terms of full throttle action, and usually not much dry weather overtaking, but where do you get that these days. It has two things though that we can look forward to tonight/later today depending on your time zone.

Firstly, it appears that there is a few different teams capable of upsetting the apple cart. Red Bull have found a track where the Renault’s blushes can be hidden to a degree, and also providing some evidence into the who’s fault it is with the Austrian-French combo. Ferrari look strong again, with the usual story of 2015 – Vettel next best in qualifying to Mercs and Kimi slightly disappointing. His imminent replacement represents the other teams likely to cause trouble in Williams.

All of this is academic really as they are all just challenging as far as second, as Hamilton looks untouchable here, and with a top notch record here it looks a formality. A few things could have stopped him. Maldonaldo qualifying on front row to increase chances of first corner prang. No he’s 14th on the grid. Maybe a challenge from Rosberg? Nope, he looks like he’s resigned to 18 points at best. Mechanical Failure? Na, the Mercs look pretty bulletproof. Weather? No, The Ham proved in Britain that rain only extends the margin. Over confidence? About the only chance.

Talking of weather it is the only other hope for some action, there was a small threat of rain during qualifying, and with the reasonably warm temperatures set to continue, we can hope for a little mid race sprinkle of excitement.

This is a big race for another reason too, there is still a lot seats for next year to be decided, and with Kimi looking more likely to get the arse from Ferrari, replaced by Bottas according to the word on the streets. The domino effect goes from there with drivers fending each other off for descending quality of drives for 2016 with the spare Williams being pick of the litter at the moment.

Someone who would be looking at any other seat as an improvement at the moment is Fernando Alonso who provided the moment of the qualifying by trying to push his McLaren Honda from the second last corner to pit lane to try and get back into Q2 and make Q3 which looked a possibility given practice times. A shame he couldn’t get a chance at Q3. A cruel person could argue that Fernando Alonso pushing his car is a far more reliable power source than the current Honda. Honda will surely improve, but like with Brawn, will they be around to reap the rewards?

So, it’s obvious that Hamilton is the only real winner of the race (paying $1.25 currently), with straws to be clutched and street money thrown at any other driver (Vettel $19 and Ricciardo $34) for the win, it’s time to look a little further down the grid at other options.

Hamilton for Fastest Lap will get a handsome $1.91, and with him likely to be up front untouched it may be the only thing interesting him late in the race. Ho about some top 6 action for the Hulk ($6) or Max Verstappen ($5). This will rely on some trouble ahead, and Ricciardo channelling Mark Webber off the grid for a 4 place loss. 1st retirement is always a great market, and with the usual suspects in the best position for first lap drama – Lotus drivers Grosjean and Maldonaldo – one could choose Lotus as the first car for $5.20. Or pick one of the cars in between them – Sainz for $16.

It may be another Mercedes 1-2, but this is a track where we can dream for something different.

Gurgler Six Pack – Sport’s Angriest People

0

Having witnessed a Queensland Cup game a few weeks back and saw one of the players put in one of the angriest performances seen on sporting field, the mind wandered a little to think of who in sport has been the angriest of angry ants.

A few people spring to mind early, and they have filled some of our Top 6. But some may not have had any big angry moments, they just seem angry in general, and are on our list.

We’re not saying angry is bad, sometimes you need a little of it and more to be ultra compeditive in sport.

JOHN McENROE

Has anyone in any sport set such an example of angry as John McEnroe? Sure some of it was a tactic to put players off, but no one has had more blow ups, or tantrums, or angry outbursts than the Superbrat.

He set a level of angry and only the new breed of young Tennis Jerk are in a position to match him, but usually off the court.

MIKE TYSON

Anyone who has bitten a piece of an opponent’s ear off, or claimed to wanting to eat someone’s children has to be seen as a very angry individual. Some time behind bars will also confirm his place amongst the angriest sports people.

Even though he represents a sport where the goal is to punch the other person enough to knock them out, Mike Tyson’s dedication to angry gives him a spot in our Six Pack of angry sports stars.

DALLAS JOHNSON

Although there were no big angry incidents, it seemed as if Dallas Johnson just hated everything. It seemed he hated you, he hated opponents, and rugby league itself.

It may be true he’s a tremendous gentleman, and equally true he was a great player and dependable for all the teams he played with. But was there a rugby league players who appeared to hate rugby league as much as him.

ROY KEANE

Surely the angriest footballer of all time, and now amongst the angriest of all sports.

Anyone in his path back in the day knew his wrath, ask Alf-Inge Haaland. But like all great angry sports stars, he didn’t leave his anger just on the sporting field, he stormed out of/was sacked from a pre-World Cup training session. His tirade against the coach Mick McCarthy was of a high standard for angry, best bits can be found here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saipan_incident

BARRY HALL

Barry Hall went into boxing after his AFL career came to an end, and some of these skills he put to use against some unfortunate defenders. Ask Brent Staker. No one every seems quite as angry to be playing AFL as Barry Hall.

JEFF TARANGO

You could have named a myriad of tennis players in this list, there’s something about Tennis that brings the worst out of people, or highlights their worst traits.

We’ve plumped for Jeff Tarango, because we’re always on the lookout for a forgotten name in sport who needs a little resurfacing in the public’s eye. His default in Wimbledon 1995 alone gives him a deserving place in our Six Paxk.

We’ve probably missed many a sports person, given limited knowledge of MMA and UFC, those people have a necessary amongst of angry to enter.

So, why not leave your angry sports person below so we can improve our list.

Nothing But League Previews the Queensland Cup R20

0

It’s a big weekend in the Queensland Cup with a top of the table clash in PNG as The Gurgler’s favourite and second placed PNG Hunters take on the Townsville Blackhawks who are the dominant leaders on this year’s competition.

They’ve only lost twice all season, and just once since Round 2. That one loss was handed to them by the PNG Hunters in one of the finest exhibitions of Queensland Cup football seen.

Here’s hoping there’s a live stream of this one, as it may be the best game of league in any competition this weekend, with a host of one sided contests in the NRL.

With these teams sitting first and second it could be a sneak preview of this year’s Grand Final. If so, sign us up. Although as some of the recent TV games prove, any of the Top 5 sides in the GF would be high quality.

But it’s not all about the Hunters v Blackhawks, there’s plenty more on offer as there is every week. The TV game as ever kicks off on Channel 9 at 1:30pm on Sunday.

Find out more from our friends at Nothing But League here.

The Gurgler’s Sporting Weekly-ish Review + Best Bets – Circling The Drain

0

What a tremendous week of sporting action – British Open Golf, AFL, NRL, some of the world’s best football teams in town and the Ashes. We sum up the bits we enjoyed and what to look forward to.

BRITISH OPEN GOLD

Despite losing most of the Saturday to wild weather it was worth it as we went into the last round with 20 genuine chances to win. It was sports betting value like never before. In the end a playoff was required, and a big performance from the less fashionable Aussie golfer Mark Leishman was not quite enough to win.

One sore point from the weekend was the coverage. The first two days were wasted by showing a select handful of players whilst missing everyone else. Maybe my favourite players should have played better, but there was no need to see every second of Tiger’s round. Then starting the last night coverage at 10:30pm when other were on the course and making moves up the leaderboard was disappointing.

ASHES GOLD

A great win for the Aussies – read more on our thoughts from the Wash Up.

FIFA GOLD

Great moment in Zurich as Sepp Blatter got a little come-uppence thanks to a comedian giving him a golden shower of cash. Let’s not forget he’s still president, and until he goes officially, there’s always a chance he’ll stay on. Blatter was probably offended at the size of money being thrown at him, he is used to at least five times more, and in a secret Swiss bank account.

QUEENSLAND CUP GOLD

Three great games on TV in a row for the Queensland Cup rugby league comp, and the 40-40 draw last Sunday between Easts and Townsville just shows what’s on offer every weekend. Those with a lazy Sunday should try and see a game live or at minimum catch one of the games on TV.

TENNIS JERK GOLD

The new breed of Tennis Jerks certainly tried their best to get that title of ultimate Tennis Jerk over the weekend. Kyrgios’ petulance in Darwin, and Tomic acting the jerk he knows he is in Miami.

Why not have some fun following their adventures with The Gurglers Tennis Jerk Bingo.
