F1 | The F1 Donkey Bold 2025 United States Grand Prix Predictions & Opinion

F1 Donkey Bold Predictions

Faster than an Alpine, with more team rules than any type of fruit, a tenth as excited about Lando Norris than Sky F1, and with more hope of getting out of Q1 than certain drivers, it’s the F1 Donkey with his unique view on F1 and more. Before each race The F1 Donkey puts the ass in sass and unloads his alternative, slightly unhinged thoughts on F1 including this week’s Bold 2025 United States Grand Prix Predictions and opinion.

The F1 Donkey’s Pre United States Grand Prix Thoughts

You’d think after Singapore I’d dedicate a whole rant about how biased McLaren are towards Lando Norris, but I won’t, not because I don’t think that McLaren aren’t favouring Lando Norris, and that the current Sky F1 team aren’t the most biased F1 propaganda machine in the history of F1 racing, but it’s best to leave that to Oscar Piastri to sort that out himself. After Singapore Oscar, the gloves are officially off, so you get your elbows officially out. And if Zak Brown tries to call you again, just use the old classic static line excuse. Although, it not about subtlety now Oscar. Don’t let them push you around like other did to your manager Mark Webber. Some of that still hurts.

But there’s an even bigger point to moan about, one that has been bugging me for way longer than the period McLaren has been compeditive for, and it took Carlos Sainz to come out and say it loudest, and bestest.

F1 pilot Carlos Sainz spoke recently, hitting out at the excessive coverage of celebrities and girlfriends in the F1 coverage.

It was well said, timely and about time. But I’d say he wasn’t harsh enough. Replace that there’s too much focus, with there’s any focus. As in, instead of less, zero would be best.

As an F1 fan who has followed the sport for five decades and can confidently speak on behalf of most F1 fans, that’s enough.

How do we miss the majority of the good on-track action for a glimpse of someone virtually unknown to an F1 fan looking on with a Lance Stroll level of apathy towards the action. Well, that might be harsh. No one cares less about Formula One than Lance Stroll.

And here’s something for your pipe F1 TV directors, if you need to put a caption on the screen to explain who the person is, the chances are an F1 fan doesn’t know them or doesn’t care about them, and in most cases both.

Especially if they are simply an influencer who aren’t even attached to an F1 driver. Influencers are of course the Lance Stroll of society, and in fact they are much worse.

Let them pose for stupid profile pictures, let them be used on Twitter to promote the Grand Prix as it would be a refreshing change from people who hate Donald Trump and people who love Donald Trump, you can even let them appear on the grid walk so they can confuse Martin Brundle who I can imagine rightly doesn’t actually care about these muppets but has to chuck a microphone in front of these clowns to keep the producer in his earpiece happy, but keep them out of the F1 coverage.

If they are not employed by an F1 team, I don’t, and most F1 fans don’t want to see anyone else between the formation lap and well after the chequered flag. Some never, and I’d be ok with that.

Show them clapping at a podium, show them posing for pictures with no one in particular in the pit lane well after the race, show them standing on the podium mopping up the champagne, just don’t show them during a race.

Maybe not show them handing out a signed tyre for getting pole position. That should be done by a legendary ex F1 driver available. And no one from Sky F1.

Let’s not forget that one of the greatest F1 finales in history, in 2008, you know the one that Felipe Massa is now involved in court cases to overturn, the post race coverage was interrupted by one of the Pussycat Dolls jumping up and down instead of seeing actual employees of the team who actually build the cars, or the reaction of drivers, or anyone actually F1 related.

This goes for all parents too by the way. Except for parent who have competed in high level motorsport. Second thoughts, I don’t want to see them either. Driver, team members, that’s it.

But I’m not expecting anything to change, as the F1 boffins defended their coverage with the usual array of corporate cliches. Bosses don’t like to admit they are wrong, and they are wrong so often.

Talking of wrong, here are this week’s bold expert tips.

The NRL Donkey’s Bold 2025 United States Grand Prix Predictions

And here they are, in a convenient team by team format, so you can ignore them all at your convenience or peril. Depending on the outcome of our prediction.

McLAREN

Oscar Piastri puts the Singapore Grand Prix shenanigans behind him by waiting until the last lap of Q3 to snatch pole from Lando Norris, who then collides with Max Verstappen on lap one, and Norris and Zac Brown console each other and Sky F1 as Oscar Piastri takes a dominant win.

RED BULL

Yuki Tsunoda to be cut in Q2, miss out on points, and virtually guarantee himself no drive in 2026. Ex driver Daniel Ricciardo to get more air time than Yuki.

MERCEDES

George Russell to quietly produce another under-the-radar successful weekend and still remained unsigned by Mercedes.

FERRARI

Lewis Hamilton to produce a shocker as Ferrari in qualifying and both cars can barely get out of the way of the midfield in the race.

WILLIAMS

Double points and pushing Ferrari, which will be some reward for Carlos Sainz.

ALPINE

Maybe Pierre Gasly will escape Q1.

RACING BULLS

Isack Hadjar to show enough speed to impress, but not enough to land the Red Bull seat.

ASTON MARTIN

What about a top six qualifying for Fernando Alonso, with a bunch of points to go with it. Lance Stroll can put his car in the wall for all I care. And he probably will.

HAAS

Oliver Bearman to collide with Lance Stroll on lap one. Limp back to the pits before a heroic drive to 15th.

SAUBER

Will not be seen on TV screens after Q1.

F1 2023 - Fabi Preview Index Feature Image

The Gurgler does like to use some obscure drivers in our Race previews and report, so who better to use than Teo Fabi to determine a race rating system.

So before each race we give a rating out of ten for four key category that are loosely based on each letter of Teo Fabi’s surname. Don’t know who Teo Fabi is, you should.

FAST? 6 / 10 – It looks like a microscope, and it is certainly a track that puts a microscope on F1 driver ability. It’s fast in sections, and then a bit stop-start towards the end of the lap. Lord knows why you’d copy the dull part of the old Hockenheimring.

ACTION? 5 / 10 – The wide, uphill first corner usually provides some over-ambitious action, and the fast sweepers make the cars look spectacular, and some of the corners allow for some good overtaking. But maybe it’s the timeslot of the race, there’s just not as many big moments as we can recall.

BIG HISTORY? – 3 / 10 – Not really. Just another track in a long line of tracks in the US. Been around for a while now.

INCLEMENT WEATHER? – 2 /10The Weather Channel says next to no chance of rain, but hot weather might be a factor.

RACE POTENTIAL RATING 40% – Not bad for a modern circuit.

2025 F1 Driver Ratings Featured Image

Here are The Gurgler’s 2025 Singapore Grand Prix Ratings – our way of rating the performances on the track without causing any red flags or running into our nearest website.

Our G-Power Rankings goes a little bit deeper than just points scored on the Sunday and has a slightly cooler name than most. We take on board Free Practice, Qualifying, performance in relation to teammate, fastest lap, and a few more stats that are attempting to highlight a driver outperforming the car and/or thrashing their teammate.

Normally we have a season long bunch of stats, but we’re saving that for the end of season review that will be way too long for anyone to want to read. Regardless, here is our shortened version for contractual obligations.

2026 NRL Round 1 Las Vegas Results

Missed all the hype of the biggest game of NRL for the 2025 season and need and/or want to catch up in the quickest way possible? Well The Gurgler has you covered for the with our 2025 NRL Grand Final Two Minute Match Report.

Our popular Two Minute Match Reviews has been upgraded from One Minute from the regular season and offers up just enough facts and figures and opinion to make it through the waiting for an Uber or Monday morning coffee catch ups, fifty cent train rides or carpools.

2025 NRL Grand Final Thoughts

Like Jerry Springer, but for rugby league.

The Broncos have broken a 19 year drought, possibly too long for a club with the resources, players and catchment (until 2023), but still exciting for most of the folk in Brisbane.

It was a game in stark contrast to the restraints of the 2024 Grand Final, for the first half anyway, as the attack was flowing at both ends. Not having Ashley Klown as referee helped, as does having one of rugby league’s most lively players putting in one of the great shifts in a recent NRL Grand Final. On the back of one of the great finals runs in recent memory.

Reece Walsh being a game breaker has been key to the Broncos to overcoming the double-digit half time deficits in their first two finals, and it was the fullback again and on steroids (figuratively) on Sunday. His try before half time kept the half time lead of Melbourne’s to the manageable levels of their finals run. This was after the Broncos scored early, then Melbourne went full Melbourne and took over the game. Jahrome Hughes’ try just before the break gave the Storm a 22-12 lead, and they looked the stronger team. They weren’t to score another point.

But that doesn’t mean the Broncos had it all their way. Minutes after Gehamat Shibasaki scored in the 45th minute (and what a story his is for 2025) Adam Reynolds limped off injured. It could be disaster for most teams to lose their halfback, not forgetting that the Broncos recent form was without Reynolds and Ezra Mam, but Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam off the bench took over and swung the game to the Broncos.

Two quick tries before the 60th minute saw the Broncos hit the lead and taking charge, but more drama was to come as Ben Hunt went off after getting the rugby league equivalent of being hit by a train, and the Broncos were left without a halfback. Thankfully the Broncos tactic of having three of four hookers in their squad paid off as Tyson Smoothy filled in for another position.

Melbourne had their chances to claw back. An ambitious but regrettable flick pass on an early tackle break wasted one chance, and a very late attacking raid from an Eli Katoa break saw Reece Walsh seal his Man of the Match performance with a huge covering tackle. That moment said it all, it was all Broncos, and they duly hung on the win the 2025 Premiership.

QUICK HITS

TO BIN OR NOT TO BIN?

No bias involved, but Trent Loiero’s sin bin seemed out of whack with the rest of the officiating. It felt no worse than some of the previous similar tackles made that were deemed reportable but not binnable. Although it must be said, the refereeing in general was great, Grand Final worthy, and may the NRL continue to overlook Ashley Klown for years to come.

YES MAM

He may have been booed, and people still may disagree with his punishment for his off field shocker, but Ezra Mam had a huge impact on this game, and much needed for the Broncos, whose starting halves weren’t playing great. Both had made poor choices on early tackles and Reynolds even kicked one out on the full. Mam’s arrival gave the Broncos real zip and life and he combined well with Reece Walsh.

THE GREAT GEHAMAT SHIBASAKI STORY

What a turnaround for Gehamat Shibasaki. Playing in the Queensland Cup in 2024 with next to no hope of an NRL career. Gets his chance in pre season with the broncos and Michael Maguire sees something and gives him first crack at centres, and how it worked out for both. Became an NRL regular early, forced his way into the Queensland Origin team which won the series, has won a Premiership now with the Broncos, and was even called up into the Australian team. It is a story which so many weekend warriors in the Queensland Cup should take note of and hang on. And also for clubs to take some time away from the next big boom rookie and look at the huge range of talent at all ages in the Queensland and NSW Cup.

MAGUIRE MAGIC

Many people thought Michael Maguire wouldn’t work, and you couldn’t blame them, but how it did, and Maguire has now beaten Australia, won the Origin Series and NRL Premiership in consecutive years. Those that scoffed at him after not being able to take the Wests Tigers any higher will likely be pretty quiet now. And those who raised alarms at the hard training should note that in the three big finals games the Broncos stormed home in the second half. And they had the shorter turnarounds for their final games than Melbourne. Maybe it will go pear shaped in the next few years, but the trophy has been won and arguments settled for a little while.

2025 Singapore F1 Grand Prix Result Race Summary

Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Here’s where we capture the laps where stuff happened. We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football, but marginally more interesting.

Setting the sceneGeorge Russell took a surprise pole position beating Max Verstappen and the McLarens who were surprisingly not as fast as expected in Q3 – they line up 3rd (Piastri) and 5th (Norris). Kimi Antonelli had a good session and lines up 4th, while the Ferraris were slightly off the pace again, but expected more on a street track. Isack Hadjar threatened to disrupt the top cars but settled for 8th, and Oliver Bearman was a notable 9th. Williams drivers were both disqualified from qualifying and will start from the back – a DRS infringement the cause.

Race day, or night as it is in Singapore is wet. It rained an hour before the start. But it is not wet enough to make wet tyres an absolute certainty so lots of guessing and potentially second guessing what tyre to use. It doesn’t actually seem that wet as the cars leave the grid for the Warm Up Lap. It seems all cars have gone with dry tyres, mostly mediums except for Max Verstappen on softs. A first lap tangle and Safety Car seems a certainty here.

GRID (Starting Order) – RUS VER PIA ANT NOR HAM LEC HAD BEA ALO

Lap 1 – George Russell gets a great start and keeps Max Verstappen behind. Lando Norris makes a great start and gains two places including getting the elbows out on his team mate Piastri, and there was allegedly slight contact and Norris has a small amount of damage on his front wing. Further back, and less Championship defining, Antonelli drops a few spots as Charles Leclerc gains. Replays of the start show contact between Lando Norris and Piastri and Max Verstappen. The rest of the grid play nice and all 20 cars

ORDER – RUS VER NOR PIA LEC ANT HAM HAD ALO BEA

Lap 3 – Oscar Piastri is filthy on the radio, suggesting Norris’ first corner moves “were not team like” and asking whether banging wheels was ok now. Not much of a response from McLaren, and Sky commentary as you’d expect. Piastri does need to move on quickly as he is dropping off the back of his team mate, and nothing is going to change.

Lap 6 – More replays of the start show that Oscar Piastri is pretty justified being grumpy, as Sky commentary change their tune. Either because of the evidence presented and/or the realisation that most non-English F1 fans think they’re massively biased.

Lap 7 – In non McLaren news George Russell sets more fastest laps and leads Max Verstappen by 3.7 seconds, who is 1.8 seconds ahead of Lando Norris.

ORDER – RUS VER NOR PIA LEC ANT HAM ALO HAD BEA

Lap 10 – George Russell is cruising out in front with a five second lead now, as Max Verstappen falls backwards and into the future plans of Lando Norris. Oscar Piastri is over 3.6 seconds behind Norris, so hard to argue that Norris isn’t the faster of the McLarens right now. He’d be primed to undercut Verstappen, but is on the medium tyres while Verstappen is on the Softs, so Verstappen is more likely to pit first.

Lap 14 – First pit stops are here, Yuki Tsunoda for tyres and Gabriel Bortoleto for tyres and a front wing. Replays of the start show that Bortoleto’s front wing was nudged by Lance Stroll, no surprise. Talking of nudges, Lando Norris nudges the wall but appears ok for now. He’s even closer to Max Verstappen than previously, so losing nothing.

Lap 17 – McLaren look to be bringing in Lando Norris, and even get the tyres out of the blankets, but they tell him to stay out and the mechanics take their tyres with them.

Lap 19 – Oscar Piastri appears to have woken up and takes a little chunk out of the deficit to Norris ahead. Maybe he’s been nursing tyres and a grudge all this time.

Lap 20 – Red Bull pits Max Verstappen and he drops to 7th, but crucially in front of Fernando Alonso, but only just. And probably just not enough for McLaren to do so the next lap. So McLaren will need to wait and have lost the opportunity to undercut. Probably unaware of all the excitement, George Russell is over 10 seconds clear of Norris.

Lap 22 – Charles Leclerc pits for tyres, probably the lowest runners to care about pitting perhaps. The Ferrari comes out behind The Hulk, who you occasionally forget is in the race. Leclerc doesn’t forget to breeze past the Sauber a few corners later.

Lap 23 – Max Verstappen, on hard tyres after his pit stop is told he is allowed to push now. He’ll need to, he’s 20 seconds and probably a McLaren pitstop behind Norris. Although, we can’t be sure if that will be a Norris pit stop or a Piastri pitstop. And if it is a Norris pit stop, will McLaren ask Max Verstappen to give back the place.

Lap 24 – Talking of McLarens, they are picking up the pace and Norris is slicing into the lead of Russell, albeit still over 9 seconds behind.

Lap 25 – Lewis Hamilton pits, which is more important for Max Verstappen than Lewis’ overall effect on the race as it clears the path for the Red Bull who was closing in quickly.

Lap 26 – George Russell pits from the lead, and his team mate does so from further behind. Russell comes out only behind the McLarens.

Lap 27 – Lando Norris pits and will he get out in front of Verstappen…..No. He’s 3.5 seconds behind but is on fresher tyres. Piastri stays out and leads the race. Maybe he’ll stay out and hope for a Safety Car. He could do with some luck. No luck, he pits at the end of the lap, and it’s a slow one. The left rear wheel won’t come off, and the five second stop costs him time, but at least not a position to Charles Leclerc. No luck for Oscar Piastri today/tonight. He has no one to give him a spot back to.

ORDER – RUS VER NOR PIA LEC ANT HAM LAW STR OCO

Lap 31 – As the dust settles from the pit stops, George Russell leads, but not with as much ease as prior to the stop. His lead is only 3.6 seconds now to Max Verstappen who is currently faster. Of the McLarens, Oscar Piastri is slightly faster post pit stops, but is a long way behind (over nine seconds) to do anything to annoy Lando Norris.

Lap 33 – An indication of on track action is the camera showing a battle for 9th between Lance Stroll, Carlos Sainz and Oliver Bearman in a wonderful mix of experience, youth and apathy towards F1. Replays also show Pierre Gasly clipping the wall. Given the pace of his Alpine it wouldn’t surprise if he privately hopes it’s terminal damage.

Lap 35 – Max Verstappen has closed to within 2.8 seconds of George Russell now and shows no signs of slowing. Maybe a battle for the lead is coming, and pretty sure they not the biggest fans of each other. How about a little hate to liven up this race.

Lap 37 – A nice battle between Fernando Alonso and Isack Hadjar for 13th sees the veteran eventually pass the Racing Bulls rookie, who has engine troubles. Alonso dubs himself “Hero of the Race” on the team radio post-overtake.

Lap 39 – Talking of car issues, Max Verstappen is having some, and he runs wide at turn two and loses a couple of seconds to George Russell. It also lets Lando Norris close in to under two seconds to Verstappen. Piastri is closing in on Norris, but not by enough to make life interesting.

ORDER – RUS VER NOR PIA LEC ANT HAM LAW SAI BEA

Lap 43 – As the race drags on, the midfield battles heat up. Alonso passes Albon as he runs wide, same for Yuki Tsunoda on one of the Alpines, neither matter. You could argue the same for Yuki. Nice guy, but wasting that Red Bull. Or are Red Bull wasting Tsunoda. Maybe both.

Lap 45 – Lando Norris is really trying his hardest to catch up to Max Verstappen, he may well get the Red Bull too, or put it into the wall. Both are possible. They are about to hit a train of midfielders, and not the soccer-ing type. This could be a big race moment.

Lap 46 – Nico Hulkenberg spins, and first thought is race saving Safety Car, but he recovers and so does the race.

Lap 47 – Lando Norris closes within a second and opens up DRS opportunities. Max Verstappen is really struggling with his car, as Norris is only a car length or two away. Maybe it will end in tears. But the McLaren does seem a lot faster. So does Piastri who has closed the gap to Norris from nine-ish second to under four. For the record, George Russell is loving life in front as he builds his lead to over five seconds.

Lap 50 – The Verstappen-Norris gap is still under one second and they are now free of midfield traffic giving Norris a decent shot at the Red Bull.

Lap 53 – Lando Norris is so close to Verstappen he pulls alongside the outside of the Red Bull during the lap. Norris might want to hurry, Piastri is looking fast now as well. Sadly the longer pit stop is costing him here.

Lap 54 – Lance Stroll is on the radio complaining about tyres. He can always quit F1 for good and forever.

Lap 56 – The gap between Norris and Verstappen is edging to outside a second, depriving McLaren of DRS. Piastri is under three seconds to Lando Norris now.

Lap 57 – Verstappen v Norris rages on and the McLaren is back on the tail of the Red Bull, but DRS isn’t helping enough for now.

FINAL LAP – George Russell is hard to find for TV cameras as he has had that kind of invisible race in front, but they do show him crossing the line for another win for 2025. Max Verstappen holds off Lando Norris well and Piastri closed in, but not by enough to interest anyone. Kimi Antonelli did well to rebuild his reputation ruined in the middle of the season. Lewis Hamilton faces a potential penalty for track limits, but that will be decided long after we hit publish on this piece.

FINAL ORDER (Across the line) – RUS VER NOR PIA ANT LEC HAM ALO BEA SAI

Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).

These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. 5 points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.

THE GREAT-EST – GEORGE RUSSELL

Took a great pole, made an excellent start, and disappeared into the distance in the race.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

LANDO NORRIS – Grabbed the Championship battle by the scruff of the neck with some aggressive first corner work. But all power to him, as he was clearly the faster McLaren driver on the day, and finished in the podium position that McLaren needed to be Constructors Champions.

MAX VERSTAPPEN – Qualified second on a track where he and his Red Bull doesn’t usually excel. A sluggish first stint on soft tyres, but a zooming second stint on hard tyres sees him close in on George Russell, but then he fell back into the DRS zone of Lando Norris, but being Max, does his thing and holds off the faster McLaren.

KIMI ANTONELLI – A clean weekend with a very good 4th in qualifying, and despite dropping a few places at the start due to being on the worse side of the track, drove a solid race for good points.

FERNANDO ALONSO – Nearly best of the rest in qualifying, but raced as feisty as ever in the midfield, showing no lack of pace, unlike others in the same team.

OLIVER BEARMAN – Solid Q3 and points from the Haas rookie.

THE GRAPE-EST – WILLIAMS

Qualifying times taken away and sent to the back of the grid after a DRS infringement. Did get a point, but underwhelming.

DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS

OSCAR PIASTRI – Lost a place at the start to his team mate, who he felt was too aggressive, and he might be right. Then a slow pit stop confined him to a lonely old race in fourth.

NICO HULKENBERG – Mediocre qualifying and race spoiled by an off during the race. He did resume, but last.

PIERRE GASLY – Ran last in the race, beaten by his team mate. Wasn’t that long ago he was annoying the front runners in qualifying at certain circuits.

Was it a good race, loads of action, a tense ending, a surprise result or DNF, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest?

We rate the big race itself, so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.

PRE RACE ACTION (FP, QUAL, SPRINT, OFF TRACK etc) –  2 / 5

A surprise pole position for George Russell and the surprise of McLaren being slightly off the pace in Q3 is mildly interesting.

ON TRACK ACTION (RACE) – 5 / 10

There were a few good scraps in the midfield as ever. Lando Norris v Max Verstappen was tense enough as the McLaren chased the Red Bull at the end.

ANY SURPRISES? – 2 / 5

George Russell’s dominance is a bit of a surprise, as was McLaren’s lack of pace in qualifying. Norris’ first laps moves surprised his team mate a little, but not really surprising given what’s at stake between them.

SEASON IMPORTANCE – 5 / 5

The move of Lando Norris on Oscar Piastri feels like one of those Senna/Prost or Hamilton/Rosberg moments where we will refer back to when it goes really pear shaped between the two drivers. The continued upgraded pace of Verstappen might end up being very important as McLaren might need to start covering Verstappen for the Championship rather than covering up their bias for Norris.

ENDING –  4 / 5

The Max Verstappen v Lando Norris chase at the end was reasonably exciting. Especially after the first half of the race was pretty dull.

OVERALL RATING – 18 / 30

A dullish race livened up towards the end as Norris tried to pass Verstappen. Norris’ early move on Piastri on lap one could be a big moment for the Championship, on and/or off track.

NRL | The NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Grand Final Expert Tips and Opinion

0
NRL 2026 Season Predictions

Angrier than a room full of Fox League writers, ducking for cover like a Melbourne Storm Assistant Coach, drinking out of more toilets than any Bronco star could ever hope for, wondering what he’s done wrong not to be a current NRL mascot, and hating Channel Nein in advance for their Grand Final coverage, it’s time for the weekly Rugby League rant of The Gurgler’s NRL Donkey, who provides his NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Grand Final Expert Tips as well as offers an alternative, slightly unhinged view full of sass of the world of rugby league and beyond for another week.

The NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Grand Final Rant

And so it has come to this. The 2025 NRL Grand Final. Not the “Big Dance”. That’s a stupid name used by lazy journalists on morning news shows and talkback radio. Probably the Courier Mail in Brisbane too, if I could be bothered paying to read it, which I’m not. It’s not even fit for wiping my rear end with. More journalism quality and the ink that would be smeared across my buttocks. Although, it would be funny if it were the Personals section. If that still exists.

Welcome to rugby league’s most polarising Grand Final. Melbourne v Brisbane. One that excludes fans from NSW, non rugby loving Victoria (which is most of it), Western Australia, South Australia, the Territories and New Zealand. Not PNG, they rugby league no matter who’s playing. Love PNG.

Of course, it is good to a degree that Penrith aren’t in the Grand Final, not because I hate them, I don’t, I admire their success, but it would be nice for someone else to win it. Just a shame the alternative are the Storm and Broncos. Or Storms as they say in other parts.

But I guess that’s at least a choice of two. And more on those two choices later. For the Grand Final coverage we have no choice, and as ever that lack of choice is crap. The home of crap really, Channel Nein. Home of MAFS. And Todd Woodbridge.

Sure we only have to endure four games on Channel Nein every year, but that’s at least five games too many.

It’s bad enough they stand in the way of standalone Origins on weekends, something that fans want. But they stand in the way of what NRL fans can nearly all agree on – like Ashley Klown is a sh!t referee, Buzz Rothfield is a bitter old man, Channel Nein’s coverage of rugby league is also sh!t – a daytime NRL Grand Final.

The AFL can do it, because when they do a television deal they don’t ask “Please sir, may I have another” like the arse slapping scene from the movie Animal House, with Channel Nein holding the paddle, which of course you better believe is worth a paddling. The AFL tell the broadcasters when the Grand Final is on. 2:30pm, last Saturday in September.

So people can gather early, light the BBQ, have beers way earlier than is normally socially acceptable, eat more food because it’s there not because it’s needed, and watch the biggest game of football for the season in the timeslot it deserves, and the fans demand.

And the AFL get the big names for their entertainment, like Snoop Dogg, and Katy Perry the year before. Well, Katy Perry wasn’t very good, but she was a big name. Same for Meatloaf. But Snoop Dogg, who was outstanding and famous, and he was heavily involved in the promo of the game beforehand. Unlike whoever is playing the NRL Grand Final. Last time I heard he cancelled shows and isn’t coming. But even if he was, would he be as involved in the NRL as Snoop Dogg has been for the AFL? Can’t see it.

Note to Brisbane 2032 Olympics organisers: get Snoop Dogg signed up now for 2032. And hurry up and start building the stadiums, transport, infrastructure and mascot so it isn’t a complete embarrassment. Well, at least you moved it from QSAC, which was the most embarrassing sports administration decision this century. Why people think conspiracy theories about Governments whose inept decision making came up with the QSAC Brisbane 2032 Olympic Stadium option is beyond me.

For what it’s worth, I think the Ibis is a great mascot for the 2032 Olympics. Just don’t hand it over to the Art community who will probably two weird characters that resemble nothing called something stupid like Wank-Wank and #something.

But back to entertainment, and of course I’m never talking about Channel Nein, do we really need entertainment before the game, or at half time, whenever they have it planned. It’s usually one song off the new album that no matter how famous the person is no one wants to hear, and a golden oldie which is so far from the prime that it feels like RSL Karaoke night on a Thursday. Or in the case of Wolfmother, a heat participant (not finalist) from Triple J’s Battle of Bands.

If the guy coming out for the 2025 NRL Grand Final doesn’t come, does anyone really care? Teddy Swims? Or something. How about old Footy Show style have James “Teddy” Tedesco come out and drop a quick ten minute set of lip synching. You know he could.

I’m sure Jimmy Barnes cares though, as I presume he is one the speed dial of the NRL, and he wouldn’t be a bad option normally, and even this year is 40 year anniversary of Working Class Man, a fine song for the NRL given it is the working man/woman’s game. But would fan long for more Jimmy Barnes, or would be just happy with the extra 15 minutes to line up for a toilet break and get another four beers.

How about using this year as the year to take back the pre-game entertainment.

In fairness, the NRL does get most of it right. By having two other games of rugby league before the big game (never big dance). The State Championship is a wonderful idea, as is having the NRLW Grand Final on the same day, given the women’s Grand Final the occasion it deserves. Unlike the AFL which has next to nothing except Snoop Dogg, and endless hours of Channel Seven stretching out their coverage. No wonder the AFL has to go after the big names of entertainment, as there’s nothing else to do. Rugby league being rugby league simply uses rugby league to entertain. Which is why they should give up on music.

Instead of music, between the first and second games is the Mascot Olympics and/or Steeplechase. All 17 are invited. There’s nothing funnier than mascots doing stuff, and having all 17 competing at once virtually guarantees everyone entertainment.

For the break between the second games and the Grand Final, it is time to re-launch the 100 metre sprint for rugby league players.

All clubs supply a player each, and there are two heats and a final for both men and women’s NRL.

This speed test will get the fans ready for rugby league, unlike a musical act, which can sometimes have the equivalent of fingernails on a chalkboard for getting fans excited about the game.

Something to consider. You don’t even have to wait for Channel Nein to lose the coverage, why not do it this year Channel Nein to show you care a little about rugby league fans.

Your kidnapping of the NRL Grand Final time, no standalone origin, your blokey-blokey in-joke coverage, and Billy Slater alone show you don’t care about league fans at the moment.

Also not caring is how do you pick a side to cheer for this Sunday.

The easy option for folk in Victoria is to jump on the Melbourne Storm bandwagon. Something is quite easy now all AFL is over. So many Melbourne based fans will likely watch their first game of rugby league for 2025 this weekend. First of all, lucky you, I’ve had to put up with Channel Nein three times already. But secondly, and I stress this, it is called rugby league, or NRL if that’s too hard to pronounce. It is not “rugby”. That rugby union, a sh!t game that is worse than A League Soccer.

So if you aren’t from Victoria and therefore understand rugby league, a Storm-Broncos Grand Final doesn’t get the blood flowing. Or maybe it does, and that’s how you know who to support. The use of hate, which is so much easier and more efficient.

As a neutral there’s a lot to hate.

There’s hints that both clubs are being looked after by the NRL. Or for some, not even hints.

Maybe you hate a player enough to support the other team. Looking a Reece Walsh, who was second in a poll taken on this website of rugby league’s most punchable players. Reed Mahoney was number one for the record. Jarome Luai has dropped out of the top ten with his huge effort for the Wests Tigers.

Walsh’s toilet water drinking would make many sick, and seeing Broncos fans bringing their own toilet gear to games is another reason to hate the Broncos.

Maybe because the Broncos are from Queensland, and Queensland have had a good year for rugby league. It would be so NSW to dislike the Broncos because of Queensland. Especially in a season where NSW lost the Origin series. And fair enough, if I was from Queensland, and I do claim that when they win, I’d probably hate both NSW teams.

Well, that excuse doesn’t hold up too much, as Melbourne have almost as many Queenslanders as the Broncos.

Maybe there’s a tall poppy cutting to be done to decide the winner. But then again, both teams are sort-of tall poppies, so hard to like for another reason.

Maybe there’s too many reasons to hate both sides, and you end up supporting no one because you don’t want to hate too much, and think there’s already enough hate in the world.

There’s always betting, which can sometimes ease the pain.

Talking of pain, even I’m bored with this week’s rant, so time to move on.

Well that’s it for me for the 2025 NRL season. I am heading back to the barn for hibernation until next NRL season, where the rants will return. And if you don’t I understand. Your loss.

Talking of loss, here are the final expert tips for 2025.

The NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Grand Final Expert Tips

SUNDAY 6:30pm – MELBOURNE v BRISBANE @ Sydney Olympic Park

I don’t know if it says more about Melbourne or the NRL in general in 2025 that the Storm have been operating at less than their best for a large chunk of the season, yet their 75%-80% of their historic best is good enough to make the Grand Final. Does that mean Melbourne just know how to win after decades of it. And they know how to win because they are sh!t scared of rugby league’s angriest man? Have they had an easier draw in the finals? Do the NRL favour them? Some say yes to all. But is it that the rest of the teams had patches of form so bad that nearly every other team except Canberra looked like they could fall out of the top eight at some stage. I say it’s a combination of all, but mostly the Bellamy fear factor. I usually tip accordingly because I’m scared of retribution. And I’m hiding behind a laptop in a barn.

Brisbane have certainly done it the hard way this finals series, having played a game longer than most movies in Canberra, and overcoming the premiership behemoth that is Penrith last weekend. All with only playing good for about 20-30 minutes in both of those games. Ok, so those minutes are very important, and have proven very successful, but if they fall behind by too many, will their point scoring burst be enough? If the deficit gets too large, then will the Broncos try too hard and stuff everything up, and Reece Walsh yelling at everyone because it’s their fault, except for when it’s his fault, then he’s really quiet.

The question is, can Melbourne get far enough in front to counter when it all clicks for the Broncos. That, and what kind of special treat do we have in store from Reece Walsh post-match if the Broncos win.

The answer is no to question one, and for question two hopefully it involves a hobby horse, toilets and fire.

FAST? 3 / 10 – Has fast sections, but overall it’s a bit too stop-start to be classed as super fast. The bit going in and out and under the grandstands feels particularly tedious.

ACTION? 4 / 10 – A little bit like Monaco that the nature of street circuit gets you excited before the race and then the race is usually a bit dull. Sometimes the nature of the night race on streets means the tyres don’t work and cars can’t do anything.

BIG HISTORY? – 4 / 10 – Not really. First night race from memory, which we’re not sure is a good things or a bad thing. And history of the Singapore GP is in the news recently as part of Felipe Massa’s court case for his missing World Championship.

INCLEMENT WEATHER? – 5 /10The Weather Channel says 70% chance of thunderstorms on Friday, then 40-50% chance of AM showers on Saturday and Sunday.

RACE POTENTIAL RATING 40% – At least it’s at night.

But slowing it down a notch, and taking on board all of Greg’s knowledge, connections and charisma, we introduce the new Greg Norman adventures, where Greg goes about daily life his way. This time he’s trying to have the perfect NRL Grand Final BBQ.

AI Greg’s NRL Grand Final BBQ

All images above were created using the technology of Grok and the slightly warped imagination of The Gurgler writing staff, who are frequently locked in a room and told not to come out until they have come up with at least 50 barely interesting stats on a specific sport, or something that makes the Telegram group give Hardy chuckles. G, they are easy to please though. But even if you don’t like the way Twitter, also known as X, is going, you should get into their AI app Grok, which needs a Twitter / X account, and let your imagination run wild. Maybe you could come up with some Greg Norman adventures of your very own to share with family and friend.

If you enjoyed this episode of Greg Norman Vs, and are not worried about our obsession with Greg Norman, especially the fact he is usually presented as shirtless, then why not follow the links to some of our other gear below.
