2022-23 Premier League Week 17 Predictions

The new Premier League is almost here, and before we launch into our weekly coverage of the world’s biggest football competition we have a look ahead at the upcoming season with our 2022-23 English Football League Season Predictions.

Our 2022-23 Premier League Season Predictions are based on a pile of stats from last season, with consideration taken into account for squad improvement for the new season. How we work that out is at the end of this article for those interested.

Alongside our season tips we offer up a bare minimum of knowledge for those who want to casually follow. We presume proper fans won’t be relying on us for season info.

The 2022-23 Premier League Season Predictions and Preview await your viewing and thoughts below.

2022-23 PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON PREDICTION TABLE

So it’s Man City from Liverpool again, easy to predict that we know, but at least it’s close again, with hopefully another final day ahead like the one we have to end the 2021-22 season.

Behind the top two it gets interesting. Our stats has Arsenal as the clear third, we don’t sort of believe it either but they weren’t far behind last season and have got some handy transfers. Chelsea sneak past Spurs for the final Champions League spot.

Brighton in seventh is a bit of a surprise, but who know they may match their expected goals for a change. Newcastle in eighth is a minimum pass mark you’d think.

Down the other end we have only one of the three promoted sides to go down, and for a change it isn’t Fulham. Bournemouth will go straight back down according to out stats prediction but the points makes it at least tight. According to our data Leeds will be relegated nice and early.

1st Manchester City

Why should a neutral care?

They’ve added one of the best young strikers in the world to a side that was already bursting with outstanding attackers.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Man City were the only side in the Premier League last season to be undefeated against top six teams. That is, top six at the time of the game not final table position. Their record ended up W7 D2. Only Man City and Liverpool scored at two or more goals per game v top six sides.

2nd Liverpool

Why should a neutral care?

Sadio Mane it out, but another fresh face from the Portuguese league comes in with Darwin Nunez’s arrival. He scored 34 goals in 41 games in all competitions last season for Benfica, which included Champions League. Throw in Mo Salah and Luis Diaz and it could be attack ahoy again for Liverpool in 2022-23.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Liverpool were the only side to remain undefeated at home last season with a record of W15 D4. They also conceded the fewest goals at home too with just nine.

3rd Arsenal

Why should a neutral care?

Gabriel jesus to Arsenal makes them much more interesting, and they have a top bunch of young players with another season under their belts, and for Saka a year further away from Euros.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Arsenal are one of only three teams (other being Liverpool and Man City) to win all their away games last season against bottom six sides (at time of match). Arsenal and Man City were the only teams to win all six games v teams from the Midlands last season.

4th Chelsea

Why should a neutral care?

Raheem Sterling at Chelsea is plenty interesting. And defensive signing Kalidou Koulibaly has been threatening to join a Premier League side for years, so looking forward to see how he goes.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Chelsea were the only team to remain undefeated on a Sunday in 2021-22. Their record was W6 D3.

5th Tottenham

Why should a neutral care?

Exciting new signings. Son and Kane. Or perhaps if / when the Antonio Conte meltdown and resignation happens.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Spurs were the only team to not lose to both Liverpool and Man City last season (aside from those team themselves). Their record was W2 D2.

6th Manchester United

Why should a neutral care?

Man Utd have put all their managerial eggs into the Ajax basket of Erik ten Hag, and running out of managerial excuses. Another side interest is to see what happens with Cristiano Ronaldo.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Man Utd conceded the sixth most goals away from home last season, and the second most away after Xmas.

7th Brighton

Why should a neutral care?

To see how far off our prediction gets.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Brighton (W7 D6 L1) lost just once last season to London clubs, and conceded the fewest goals with 9 in 14 games.

8th Newcastle

Why should a neutral care?

There’s still time left for new moneybags Newcastle to spend more. But this looks like a team on the rise this season.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Newcastle were a top four side if the table started from February 1.

9th Crystal Palace

Why should a neutral care?

Aside from Brighton fans, is there a more neutral team to keep an eye on than Crystal Palace.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Wilfried Zaha was the most fouled player in the Premier League last season, averaging 3.1 per game. Second was Ivan Toney at 2.4 per game. Only Man City and Liverpool conceded fewer goals at home than Crystal Palace last season.

10th Nottingham Forest

Why should a neutral care?

Jesse Lingard’s arrival is pretty interesting. Taiwo Awoniyi also looks an interesting player to follow. And work out how our stats say Forest finish 10th. Although very few would have had Sheffield Utd as high as they finished in their first season back in the Premier League not long ago.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Manager Steve Cooper has been in the manager job less than a year, but has already been in the job longer than 50 other Football League managers. Nottingham Forest ended last season in the Championship with seven straight wins at home.

11th West Ham

Why should a neutral care?

Having David Moyes at the helm will always make this club more interesting than usual. Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen and Saïd Benrahma are all interesting players for a neutral.

21/22 Season Stat…..

West Ham played the fewest games on a Saturday last season with just eight. Brighton, Norwich and Watford played the most with 22.

12th Leicester

Why should a neutral care?

You just get the feeling that this could be the season where it all implodes. Jamie Vardy is fun to follow when he’s fit, which is usually only 50% of a season.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Only Norwich had a worse Expected Goals Against in the second half of last season. Leicester and Man City were the only sides to win all six games v promoted sides last season.

13th Brentford

Why should a neutral care?

Second season syndrome candidates here with no Christian Eriksen. Although if they keep Ivan Toney he will at least entertain.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Brentford were sixth for points per game from when Christian Eriksen played his first game for Brentford last season.

14th Southampton

Why should a neutral care?

A south coast derby with Bournemouth?

21/22 Season Stat…..

Southampton finished in the bottom three of the table from January 1 onward last season.

15th Aston Villa

Why should a neutral care?

Steven Gerrard as manager will always make them a side for neutral interest. Philippe Coutinho makes them interesting too, to see which way his form heads this season.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Aston Villa were good enough for tenth last season, if the table was re-calculated from the hiring of Steven Gerrard. Aston Villa’s record of W1 D2 L11 against London clubs was the second worst in the Premier League last season. Behind Watford who lost all 12 games.

16th Wolverhampton Wanderers

Why should a neutral care?

Really can’t think of one. Is Adama Traore back this season?

21/22 Season Stat…..

Wolves were one of four teams only not to beat a big six team at home last season. But were one of only five teams to win two or more games away to the big six clubs.

17th Fulham

Why should a neutral care?

Can they stay up this time? Can Aleksandar Mitrovic become even half as prolific as his 43 Goals and 7 assists last season? Will they ‘Do a Fulham’?

21/22 Season Stat…..

Aleksandar Mitrovic personally scored as many or more goals than eight Premier League teams last season.. Fulham averaged 6.1 Shots on target in the Championship last season. Only Manchester City and Liverpool beat that in the Premier League last season. The three promoted sides were the top three sides for goals scored (and a healthy gap to fourth) and in the top four for Shots on Target per Game in the Championship last season.

18th Everton

Why should a neutral care?

I guess if you’re the type of person who feels the need to stare at a car accident aftermath you’ll find some interest in Everton’s season. That, and possibly the point where Frank Lampard loses it. That said, we could be totally wrong with Everton and can be notified by mid February if that’s the case.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Everton scored the equal fewest points away from home last season with Norwich with just ten points. They won their second and third last away games of the season and that was it. Everton failed to beat a bottom six side (at time of match) away last season in five attempts. But they did win all five games at home to bottom six sides (at time of match).

19th Bournemouth

Why should a neutral care?

Because promoted sides are interesting for a while. And manager Scott Parker deserves success in the Premier League. I guess the Newcastle games will be slightly overblown because of Eddie Howe too.

21/22 Season Stat…..

Bournemouth conceded the fewest goals in the Championship last season, and lost fewer games than runaway winners Fulham.

20th Leeds

Why should a neutral care?

Can Leeds hang on to their Premier League status without Raphinha?

21/22 Season Stat…..

Leeds lost all 12 games against the big six teams last season and by the margin of 8 goals to 47.

EVERYDAY NEWS – Club Cricketers Wake Up from Hibernation

With July turning into August, club cricketers around the country are preparing for pre-season training after a long and cold winter.

Everyday News Staff Writers spoke to Garry Kelly (a 33-year-old medium pacer for the Belconnen Blues fifth XI) about his pre-season preparation.

”The club’s social media guys put up a Facebook message that training was starting next weekend, so I pulled the old kit bag from the shed, and it was pretty nasty. There were three rotted banana peels from our last game in March, a half-eaten bag of chips, and my pads felt a bit sticky for some reason.”

After cleaning out his kit and let it air out on the clothesline, Garry messaged some team-mates to have a hit and get back into cricket mode.

“Mate, I’ve spent the last five months watching my mighty Raiders, drinking a lot of beer, and doing family stuff, so I was pretty rusty. Though I started to hit a decent line and length after a couple hours. I batted ok too. The run will do me good. I probably should have joined our winter indoor team to keep trim, but I had a shocking season last summer and wanted to forget about cricket for a bit.”

Garry is entering his fifth season with the Blues Fifth XI, and is keeping his goals fairly realistic.

”I only got 10 poles last year, so I want to beat that. And I want to make less ducks too. And take a few more catches. And avoid the dreaded fine-leg-to-fine-leg duty. Might have to bribe skip with a few cartons before round one for that to happen. Probably should have gone to the AGM too.”

Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of ‘The Betoota Advocate’. We swear.

FOOTBALL | 2022-23 English Football League Season Predictions and Preview

0

Football is just about to kick off for another season, and just before the Premier League comes along and takes up all the attention, the three lower divisions all begin their season this weekend. Which is why we offer up our usual look to the season ahead with 2022-23 English Football League Season Predictions.

Our 2022-23 English Football League Season Predictions are based on a pile of stats from last season, with consideration taken into account for squad improvement for the new season. How we work that out is at the end of this article for those interested.

Alongside our tips we offer up a bare minimum of knowledge for those who want to casually follow. We presume proper fans won’t be relying on us for season info.

The 2022-23 English Football League Season Predictions await your viewing and thoughts below.

2022-23 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON PREDICTION

 2022-23 Championship Season Prediction

We have Burnley to bounce straight back up, as they did last time they were relegated. Although the last time in the 70’s when they went up, down, up to the first division, there was a hefty down all the way to fourth tier. If they can hold onto Dwight McNeil and Maxwell Cornet they could do it easily.

Going with them is Sheffield United, formerly of the Premier League just a few seasons ago. Our stats sharpen the Blades from fifth last season to second and an automatic jump up.

The rest of the top six is a varied mix of former first division teams, two of the sides last visit to the top flight just pre-dates the Premier League. Out of the teams our stats have selected for 3rd to 6th we’re going for Luton Town to be the lucky side promoted.

Of the other teams coming down we have them knocking on the door of the finals but missing out. Both clubs have been regular yo-yo clubs.

Two of the bottom three – Reading and Birmingham – are teams that have flirted with relegation in the last few seasons, and eventually that luck runs out we say. The stats point to a surprise for the other relegated team in Blackburn – who finished 8th last season.

Happily for the promoted teams, we have none of them being cut.

QUICK HITS – ODDS

2022-23 Championship Season Betting

So our top selection Burnley is third in betting, but plenty of value. Much like any of our promotion chances. The betting shops agree with two of our bottom three selections.

QUICK HITS – TOP SIX SEASON 2022-23 KITS

2022-23 Championship Best Five Kitsx

Burnley have timed being sponsored by our favourite clothing shop in the world Classic Football Shirts – with unveiling a kit that is way more interesting for them than usual.

As fans of the simplicity of the Peru national kit and diagonal shapes in general, we love the Stoke City away shirt. Luton Town have a cracking kit this season with the home kit in our top five and the away one very close too. Coventry take up two spots with their home and away shirts for the season.

The shots of these kits have been taken from the excellent Football Kit Archive website.

QUICK HITS – ANYTHING ELSE?

Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is the manager of Burnley. For those who missed the change late last season Nigel Pearson is manager of Bristol City.

This is the fourth time since 2015 that Norwich have arrived back from the Premier League.

Sunderland are back in the Championship for the first time since their Netflix documentary started and captured the season they were going to bounce straight back to the Premier League.

Watford start the season with a new manager – Rob Edwards who took Forest Green Rovers to the League Two title last season. He’s their 17th manager in ten seasons.

Major derbies ahead for the season:

  • Cotton Mills Derby or El Lanclasico – Burnley v Blackburn
  • West Lancashire derby – Preston North End v Blackpool
  • Severnside derby – Bristol City v Cardiff City
  • South Wales derby – Cardiff City v Swansea City
  • Beds–Herts or M1 Derby – Watford v Luton Town

2022-23 LEAGUE ONE SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON PREDICTION

2022-23 League One Season Prediction

As a casual fan of AFC Wimbledon it pains to say taht our season predictions came up with Milton Keynes to top League One, and with quite a gap too. It’s not a stretch for them to win it though, as they finished third last season, failing to get promoted automatically by one point.

Our stats point to the next team from last season’s ladder and big club Sheffield Wednesday to join Milton Keynes automatically after finishing fourth last season.

Seems obvious to pick the next best teams from last season, so the rest of the playoff hopefuls are an interesting mix. Just one of our third to sixth crew featured in the top six last season – Wycombe – but can they do it without our favourite footballer of all time Adebayo Akinfenwa?

We’re going to go boring and pick Portsmouth to be the third promoted side from that list of four.

As a lifelong Ipswich Town supporter we are disappointed and not surprised in equal measure that our stats say they won’t be going up again. Ipswich never seem to feature in any top stats, so their mediocrity will continue again.

Going down we have a wide mix of teams. We have one Championship club doing a double drop and despite their off field troubles it isn’t Derby County but Barnsley. Also joining them, according to our stats is last year’s League Two Champions Forest Green Rovers, which won’t be helped by their title winning manager leaving to be fired at Watford in a few months time. Smallish clubs Morecambe and Fleetwood Town are the other teams our stats will drop.

QUICK HITS – ODDS

L2022-23 League One Season Betting

The odds agree with our promoted sides as they both feature in the top five of betting.

Nice to see Ipswich Town in the top five of anything we guess.

Plenty of value for Cheltenham who we say finishes top six.

QUICK HITS – TOP SIX SEASON 2022-23 KITS

2022-23 League One Best Five Kits

Not just because we’re trying to crowbar Ipswich into a top list, both of their offerings this season are quality and selling well according to reports. Obviously we like a black shirt with aqua, but the Plymouth third isn’t anywhere near as good as the black, green and gold one from last season. Oxford makes the list, and possibly Shrewsbury is included due for Spinal Tap reasons.

The shots of these kits have been taken from the excellent Football Kit Archive website.

QUICK HITS – ANYTHING ELSE?

Key rivalry returns with Peterborough and Cambridge to face each other this season.

Ipswich Town’s kit continue to be sponsored by Ed Sheeran who is a fan.

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth is just two months shy of ten years in charge of the Chairboys. A decent effort considering 53 of the current 92 English Football managers have less than year current tenure at their club.

2022-23 LEAGUE TWO SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON PREDICTION

2022-23 League Two Season Prediction

The top three our stats say for automatic promotion include a relegated side from League One (AFC Wimbledon) and in Sutton United and Tranmere two teams that finished just outside the top seven.

Other teams vying for promotion according to our stats were all from League Two last season and inside the top 11.

There are no promoted candidates for the top seven, but at least neither with be relegated,

As for relegated the two teams selected by the data, two of the bottom three not relegated last season appear to be up for it in 2022-23.

QUICK HITS – ODDS

2022-23 League Two Season Betting

Plenty of value for our three automatic promotion candidates ranging from $17 – $26.

QUICK HITS – TOP THREE SEASON 2022-23 KITS

It’s sli pickings for League Tow if we’re honest, or maybe we’re too snobby. Either way we could only find three that tickle our fancy.

QUICK HITS – ANYTHING ELSE?

There is an Australian manager in League Two with Jon Brady in charge of Northampton Town.

Stockport County arrive from the National League. They have been on quite the journey. In the second tier halfway through the 2000’s, they dropped as low as the sixth tier within a decade, but are on the way back up now with consecutive promotions.

Harrogate Town manager Simon Weaver is the longest serving manager in the top four tiers with 13 Years and a couple of months.

Last season was AFC Wimbledon’s first ever relegation since the club formed in 2003.

2022-23 EFL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PREDICTIONS STATS

We’re surprised you’ve made it this far, but if you were in the market for knowing which stats we used to come up with the predictions here it is below.

PointsPerGame, GoalsScoredAll, PPG@H, GS@H , GoalsConceded@A, PPG Last6, GSPG Last6, 2ndHalfSeasonPPG, Change%1stHalfSeason, ManagerReignRank, Shots pg, On Target %, Key Passes, Who Scored Rating, Betting, TfrMarktValue, TfrMarktChange

With also a percentage increase applied to relegated sides and percentage reduction for promoted sides.

2022 NRL Round 20 Barely Interesting Stats Summary

Here we take the best points of interest for each match coming up this weekend, and share them with you for no cost. Feel free to share with friends and family.

Manly and the Roosters have never met on a Thursday. Which is probably a good thing for Manly as they have only won two of ten clashes on a Thursday against fellow Sydney opposition. Roosters record by the way is nine wins from 14 similar games.

The Roosters have won their last three away games on a Thursday and conceded exactly 16 points on each of those three occasions. In fact, they have conceded by a multiple of 16 in seven of their last eight away games on a Thursday – if you include 16, 32 and 0……

If the Storm lose to the Warriors on Friday it will be the first time since 20212 where they have lost every game in a calendar month.

Melbourne have won 12 in a row against the Warriors. They average 51 points per game v Warriors from their last four games.

The Warriors last beat Melbourne in New Zealand back in 2015.

Melbourne have won 11 in a row on a Friday.

More away 16’s for you – Melbourne have conceded 16 points in their last three away games on a Friday.

Parramatta is the only team to beat Penrith twice from the start of the 2020 season.

The Eels have won their last two games on a Friday against Sydney opposition by the exact same score 22-20.

Penrith last lost an away game on August 1 last year.

Gold Coast have lost their last three and five of their last six at home to Canberra. And five of their last six v Canberra on a Saturday.

Titans have won just two of ten games on a Saturday this season. Although, that’s 67% of their total wins for the season.

Souths have won 17 of their last 18 matches on a Saturday.

Wests Tigers have been robbed in their last one match/es away in Queensland.

Broncos have won eight of the nine matches played against the Wests Tigers on a Saturday.

Wests Tigers have won just three of their last 18 Saturday matches. But they have won four of their last five matches on a Saturday against Qld opposition.

Bulldogs have won the last two matches between these sides on a Sunday.

Newcastle have lost their last two games by the exact same score line of 12-42.

Newcastle have conceded a competition worst 32.75 points at home this season – eight more on average than the next worst (Tigers).

Dragons have won four of the five games played on a Sunday v Queensland opposition since 1998.

0

What a week of NRL action it was, star performances, hard working players giving it their all, and The Bunker ruining the <insert game here> match. But which players were the best of the best this week in the NRL? Let our NRL Round 19 Team of the Week explain.

We have taken some of the key stats and assign various scoring methods against them, all in the good intention of making the various types of stats even out across the position.

An explanation of what is included and points assigned is right at the bottom.

This may be all good in hindsight, but could also help the odd desperate Supercoach player, or down on his luck sports gambling investor.

It’s time to unveil the NRL Round 19 Team of the Week, so enjoy.

NRL Round 19 Key Player Stats

Want to see which players topped the key stats for Round 19 of the NRL?

Help yourself to the below.

A FEW THOUGHTS:

  • 23% of Luke Brooks’ season Line Break Assists/Try Assists came in the game v Cowboys.
  • 43% of Brent Naden’s Line Breaks for the season came this weekend.
  • Three of the top four for Run Metres possibly should have been the back three for the NSW Blues for Origin.

NRL 2022 Season Team of the Year So Far

So here is the Team of the Season so far based on the Stats we have compiled.

Hard to argue with a lot of them, although the centres would have been left field choices at the beginning of the season. But it has hardly been a classic season for centres.

2025 NRL Round 1 Results Headlines

It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times, and now the Wooden Spooners have returned to cast their eye over the latest weekend of rugby league that was with the NRL Round 19 Results & Headlines.

Going beyond the scores, the NRL Round 19 Results & Headlines gives the extra insight in the NRL that only the Wooden Spooners can.

BUNKER TO FACTOR IN WIND SPEEDS AND CROWD NOISE FOR OBSTRUCTION CALLS FOR FUTURE GAMES AFTER PARRA v BRISBANE CLASH TO ENSURE IT RUINS MORE TRIES

In a prelude to a weekend conversation dominated by The Bunker, there was a try disallowed in the Parramatta-Broncos game on Thursday night that has to be one of the weakest excuses to disallow a try in the last weeks.

To ensure The Bunker alienates as many blue collar league fans as possible they intend to include wind factor, wind speed, humidity and crowd noise as factors that may be given for disallowing a try in future rounds of the NRL.

F—K THE NRL MUST REALLY HATE THE WESTS TIGERS

The biggest talking point of the NRL Round 19 weekend was the ending to the Cowboys v Tigers game where they were robbed, no other way of putting it.

The only other conclusion you can draw from that and Graham Annesley’s comments on Monday was that the NRL hate the Tigers.

How else could you explain that clusterf—k, except we guess pure incompetence, which can’t be ruled out.

Maybe Fox League and James Hopper were involved also given how much they appear to hate the Tigers.

ASHLEY KLOWN NAME GAINING SPEED

One thing for sure is that Ashley Klein is never a good thing. And he was at the heart of another episode of underwhelming officiating.

One Wests Tigers fan has started using the hashtag #AshleyKlown with every rant about the Tigers since Sunday’s loss.

It has caught on with at least 6 likes and 3 retweets, which is at least double the usual tally of love the fan receives.

NRL TO INVESTIGATE VARIOUS NEW SOUNDS TO ALERT OF SOFT FULL TIME WHISTLE

One final thing to come out of the Cowboys v Tigers controversy was the revelation that there is actually two whistles to end a game.

To avoid future confusion the NRL are exploring options to differentiate these better in the future.

One includes bring out respected Premier League referee Howard Webb to demonstrate an English football variation of the pea blowing.

Another involves a slide whistle, which is far less professional but funny.

The final suggestion is that the current referee’s whistle remains as the soft full time signal and that every ground has a cannon installed, which is lit after comms between the referee, touchline officials, the Bunker, and a neutral Doctor in the crowd give the okay to officially end the game.

MELBOURNE LOCALS REACTION TO THE STORM’S FOURTH LOSS IN A ROW

The Wooden Spooners have an exclusive on the fallout of Melbourne’s fourth straight loss.

YOU KNOW THE STORM ARE STRUGGLING WHEN SOUTH SYDNEY BEAT THEM

Heading into the Round 19 clash South Sydney against Melbourne was the most lop-sided clash in the modern day NRL competition.

While that remains the same despite Souths’ win on Saturday night, it is a fair indication that the Storm are really struggling if they can’t beat the Rabbitohs.

It was the first win in eight for Souths over Melbourne, the first win against the Storm on a Saturday since 2010, and the first time they had beaten Melbourne in July.

LOCAL VICTORIAN WEATHER FORECASTERS PREDICT LOCALISED GALE FORCE WINS AROUND AAMI PARK THIS WEEK

After Melbourne Storm suffered their fourth straight loss for the first time in many years, local weather forecasters, who really know their rugby, have jokingly forecasted there is going to be localised severe wind gusts and heavy showers expected at AAMI Park for training this week.

Sadly, the Wooden Spooners can confirm that none of the forecasters friends from Melbourne knew who the Storm were, nor gave a shit that they had lost any in a row, in another attempt to make the same joke as a headline above.

Good news is that the real Melbourne Storm fans with a sense of humour from interstate warmly received the tongue in cheek tweets.

JOSH ADDO-CARR CALLS 1800-UP-YOURS-FREDDIE

The Try July celebrations have been a welcome inclusion to the NRL this month, with some amateur acting.

Although not one of the most creative performances, Josh Addo-Carr’s telephone was still a goodun’.

Eagle-eyed Wooden Spooners contacts at the ground can confirm that Addo-Carr actually dialed the numbers that spelled out 1-800-UP-YOURS-FREDDY.

We presume that is aimed at NSW Coach Brad Fittler or a friend called Fred who owes him money.

WARRIORS TAKE OVER THE JOHNSON & JOHNSON TROPHY FOR TEAM THAT BLOWS THE MOST HALF TIME LEADS

A rare chunk of interesting stats from the weekend of listening to the NRL on the radio was the Warriors are now leading the NRL all time record for blowing half time leads of 12 points or more.

This means the Johnson & Johnson Trophy for team who powders the most will be taken back across the Tasman this weekend. Although, the Warriors have tentatively pencilled in returning it to the Raiders before the season is out.

They are also in the running for Sour Grapes of the Season award over Reece Walsh. Although it will be hard to wrestle this trophy away from post Origin Andrew Johns.

DANE GAGAI & BRANDON SMITH AVAILABLE FOR KIDS PARTIES AND R-RATED PODCAST

Coming soon to the Wooden Spooners – Brandon Smith and Dane Gagai “The Entertainers”. The duo, who have been recently sin binned for abusing referees are offering their services for kids parties and have the intention of adding yet another rugby league podcast to the buffer. They promise it will be blue. Which is ironic given one player is from Queensland and the other plays for New Zealand.

ADAM REYNOLDS MAKES THE BRONCOS 50% LESS HATEABLE

The Wooden Spooners spent Sunday scouring South Bank to as non Broncos fans about how they felt about the Brisbane based team in 2022.

After spending most of the day at the pub, and nearly forgetting to do the task they weren’t being paid for, they managed to stumble into two gentlemen in NRL team gear from another club.

Upon being asked the question Are the Broncos less hateable with Adam Reynolds, Steve answered “sort of” and his mate Geoff asked us politely to f—k off.

THE SHANE FLANAGAN NEW COACHING GIG-O-METER

With Shane Flanagan in the commentary box for Fox League in 2022, we can continue to expect subtle digs at teams who are struggling and that he can see a possible way in for.

So each week as part of the Wooden Spooner’s NRL Headlines, we’ll bring you the New Coaching Gig-O-Meter. This features which teams are hot for a new coach, or a team that was and is going cool.

With the news that the Wests Tigers are going back to the future with Tim Sheens and Benji Marshall, this means the year-long campaign to shove Shane Flanagan in as the Tigers coach is over.

Flanagan is running out of clubs, but that won’t stop the Fox League machine.

Last week it was a Dragon, this week it is a Knight.

After the Dragons were the side Fox League were bashing on behalf of their mate Shane Flanagan, the Red V put in a big performance to beat Manly.

So the Fox League have reportedly set their sights on Newcastle.

2022 French Grand Prix Results
THE LAPS THAT MATTERED

Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Well here are the top laps where stuff happened. We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football, but marginally more interesting.

Setting the Scene – Big pre-event chat was that the Mercedes were bringing plenty of upgrades to the French Grand Prix and were a dark horse. Whether they did or not, the improvement overall has been minimal. They remain third best behind Ferrari and Red Bull but well ahead of the midfield. Even an outstanding Lando Norris split the Mercs.

The battle up the front will be interesting with Ferrari taking Pole position but Red Bull the popular opinion for the race. Carlos Sainz is at the back of the grid after penalties, so there’s a side interest.

It is pretty hot, so it will all be about tyres and strategy perhaps than outright pace.

TOP 10 GRID – LEC VER PER HAM NOR RUS ALO TSU RIC OCO

Lap 1 –  Pole sitter Charles Leclerc gets away well, Verstappen challenges but settles for second. Lewis Hamilton storms into third and Alonso leaps into fifth. McLarens are 7th and 8th which is good for Ricciardo and not so for Norris. A little bit of locked brakes the only drama from the first half of the lap. A little later Yuki Tsunoda spins at the long straight chicane, possibly getting some assistance from Ocon. Scratch that, plenty of “help” from Ocon. Carlos Sainz makes it up to 17th by end of lap one.

ORDER – LEC VER HAM PER ALO RUS NOR RIC OCO STR

Lap 4 –  Max Verstappen is right on Charles Leclerc’s rear already, within a second as the DRS is available on the back straight. Verstappen doesn’t pass, but it is game on and another great battle between these two These two are already four second ahead of Lewis Hamilton in third, who is under massive pressure from Sergio Perez.

Lap 8 –  The battle for first is still raging with Max Verstappen showing more restraint than an entire 2021 season. Perhaps he simply has more respect for Leclerc, perhaps Max is more mature with a title under his belt, but no doubt if this was Hamilton-Verstappen there’d be an accident by now.

Some for-the-records now. Ocon passes Ricciardo for 8th, and Carlos Sainz in up to 12th, going at almost a position a lap.

ORDER – LEC VER HAM PER RUS ALO NOR OCO RIC STR

Lap 9 –  The pit stops have started already, given an indication of the heat’s effect on tyres. Mainly a bunch of lower midfield runners who probably won’t score a point, but still it might be the only time they are interesting this race.

Lap 13 –  Carlos Sainz is in the top ten already, passing Lance Stroll for the final point into the back straight chicane. At the front Leclerc has stretched out the gaps to outside a second, which means no more DRS for Max Verstappen.

Lap 17 –  Max Verstappen pits for new tyes, and thank god to a degree as this race was getting boring and a little harder to stay awake for. Verstappen rejoins in 7th behind Lando Norris.

Lap 18 –  Leclerc is OUT!!!! TV Coverage shows a Ferrari in the barriers at Turn 11 and it is the race leader!! This brings out the Safety Car and a lot of pit stops. Replays show rear end steps out on the Ferrari and he does a 360 spin before hitting the barriers. Leclerc mentions a stuck throttle in between screaming into the radio. A similar issue Leclerc had last race. He later takes the blame himself as a driver error.

ORDER – VER HAM PER RUS ALO NOR RIC SAI OCO STR

Lap 21 –  Safety Car leaves and the race resumes. Not much happening except for Carlos Sainz overtaking two McLarens pretty quickly to be sixth. He gets by Alonso a couple of laps later. But the Spaniard shouldn’t get too excited, he’s earned a five second penalty for an unsafe release from his pitstop, which looking at the replay is fair enough.

Lap 22 –  Guanyu Zhou punts Mick Schumacher into a spin at Turn 11/12. Both continue poorer than before. Talking of poor, it’s time for a Latifi check – he’s 18th and not too far away from the cars in front. Safety Car helps.

Lap 32 –  After a short nap we realise not much has changed – Verstappen still well ahead and Carlos Sainz is up to fourth. He’s catching Perez for third too. And second isn’t out of the question by race’s end.

ORDER – VER HAM PER SAI RUS ALO NOT RIC OCO STR

Lap 38 –  Magnussen and Latifi clash for a position we don’t care about. Both cars continue.

Lap 41 –  Carlos Sainz continues to pressure Sergio Perez for third, but there’s a whole heap of radio talk about a pitstop. Not forgetting he has a five second penalty to take. Ferrari tells Sainz to pit just as he is stealing third off Perez with a magic move into the last corner of the lap. Sainz does pit a lap later which drops him to ninth. Ninth! Ferrari look to have blown a podium here. Even on old tyres Sainz would have been able to stay ahead of the car he had passed and squeeze out a five second lead to negate the penalty. They are truly hopeless.

Lap 42 –  It’s all happening now, George Russell clashes with Sergio Perez. Nothing major, and both car continue. But they continue battling for positions.

Lap 49 –  Guanyu Zhou retires his car which brings out a Virtual Safety Car.

Lap 50 –  Virtual Safety Car ends and George Russell catches Perez asleep and steals his third place trophy for now.

Lap 51 –  Carlos Sainz sets fastest lap. He gets close to Perez-Russell but not enough laps yet. And needs a better team for strategy.

Last Lap – Max Verstappen cruises over the finish line for one of his easier wins. George Russell and Sergio Perez continue squabbling over third place but Russell keeps it. Lewis Hamilton finishes a season-high second place in his 300th race. The two Aston Martin battle all around the track for the last lap but it settled for Lance Stroll. Good points for Alpine and McLaren in their battle for fourth best team.

FINAL ORDER – VER HAM RUS PER SAI ALO NOR OCO RIC STR

RACE RATING

Was it a good race, loads of action, tense, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest.

We rate the big race itself so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.

SEASON IMPORTANCE –  7 / 10

Another win for Red Bull, another choke from Ferrari/Leclerc. Verstappen extends lead, Ferrari fall further behind. Ferrari’s effort with Sainz’s strategy doesn’t fill one with great confidence for the future either.

ON TRACK ACTION – 5 / 10

A good battle at the front between Leclerc-Verstappen for the first part of the race without an overtake. The George Russell-Sergio Perez battle with an overtake bookended the race nicely for action. Carlos Sainz produced some entertainment in his run from the back of the grid to top six passing a lot of cars. In between there was a few passes here and there, and not super exciting.

ENDING 5 / 10

Not much happening right at the front, but Perez v Russell was some kind of fun. Ferrari v Sainz for pit stop strategy was some more entertainment. But the race result was in the bag for most positions.

OVERALL RATING 17 / 30

Whether it was us or the race, but a race where a quick nap was needed is a good indication it wasn’t a classic. Watch the Mini race, check the Championship standings, move on.

GREAT & GRAPE OF THE RACE

Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).

These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. Five points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.

It used to be called the good, bad and ugly, but everyone is using that now. And who doesn’t like grapes.

THE GREAT-EST – CARLOS SAINZ

Went from the back of the grid because of car penalties to what should have been second or third. Screwed by his car’s unreliability in the first place when he was quick for a lot of the weekend sucked. Then his team let him go from his pit stop dangerously which earned him a five second penalty. Then his team pit him late in the race when he was battling the top five car, and he probably would have finished second and with a five second gap.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

MAX VERSTAPPEN – Eased to victory, extends his Championship lead as his nearest rival Charles Leclerc spins out of the lead. Job done.

LEWIS HAMILTON – Solid second place in his 300th Grand Prix. Mercedes showing OK pace in the race, if not qualifying.

GEORGE RUSSELL – Another good weekend, and a podium hard earned after a long battle with Sergio Perez.

FERNANDO ALONSO – Best of the rest and another solid drive.

DANIEL RICCIARDO – A steady drive to points, and only just behind his team mate. He’ll have to take that based on recent races.

THE GRAPE-EST – CHARLES LECLERC

A third race where he has retired from the lead. This time was mainly Leclerc’s fault, and while he did take responsibility for the off, it was still a bad look for the championship. He falls further behind Verstappen in the Championship

DIS-HONOURABLE MENTIONS

FERRARI – Terrible weekend on Carlos Sainz’s behalf.

YUKI TSUNODA – An early clash, which eventually led to a mid-race retirement.

NICHOLAS LATIFI – Another waste of a seat in F1 weekend.

WOODEN SPOONERS – The Storm Reaction

0

In the pursuit of a scoop, our Melbourne-based Wooden Spooners Staff Writers spent a few hours on Sunday morning looking to get the Storm fans’ reaction to their fourth straight loss. Are they panicking? Do they still have faith in Craig Bellamy to turn things around before September? Should the Storm just relocate to Queensland already?

Unfortunately, our Staff Writers couldn’t find any Storm fans in the Melbourne CBD, but we did find plenty of Carlton, Collingwood, and Essendon fans on their way to Marvel Stadium and the MCG.

Not wanting to waste a pleasant, sunny day, the Staff Writers played touch footy at a nearby park and then went to a pub to watch the Canterbury-Bankstown v Gold Coast/North Queensland v Wests Tigers double header.

EVERYDAY NEWS – The Podcast Obsession

0
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JULY 17: Negro Leagues Baseball Museum president and historian Bob Kendrick interviews Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson and CC Sabathia at SiriusXM's Black Diamonds podcast live from Major League Baseball's All-Star Week at Play Ball Park at the Los Angeles Convention Center on July 17, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Vivien Killilea/Getty Images for SiriusXM)

A Brisbane man has become obsessed with listening to podcasts.

Peter started in 2018 when he was looking to kill time during a quiet overtime Saturday at work (starting with Six Tackles with Gus) and the obsession grew from there. He’s now subscribed to nearly 40 podcasts, with most focusing on rugby league (he’d a diehard Broncos fan), cricket (he’s played park cricket since he was a kid), pop culture/TV show podcasts, and accounting podcasts (Peter’s an accountant).

A lot of his podcasts are weekly, and he’s memorised when each of them are ready to drop.

“Luckily I don’t have a lot of client interaction, so I’m free to listen to podcasts at work, which is essential to keep up with everything,” said Peter.

But Peter has a busy home life and doesn’t have time to listen to podcasts outside of work, which means a podcast backlog after holidays.

Embed from Getty Images

”It’s always bad after the Christmas/New Year break; my queue is normally double what it is and all of the Christmas-time pods are out of date. It usually takes me a few days of solid listening to clear my queue. Easter’s almost as bad with all my footy pods.”

While Peter has considered cutting down on podcasts, it’s a lot harder than you’d think.

”I do a cleanout every now and then, but I honestly don’t want to get rid of any of them. There’s a few that have been quiet, but I keep them incase there’s new episodes. You never know. I always tell myself, ‘no new podcasts!’, but I’m always looking for new ones to binge after I’ve cleared my queue and have nothing else to listen to.”

Peter has no plans of starting his own podcast though.

”Yeah, nah, I’ve been a guest on a couple of mates’ pods, and I’ve seen the work that goes into it. I don’t have the time for that.”

Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of ‘The Betoota Advocate’. We swear.
