A popular TV rewatch podcast has been revived by a group of ‘superfans’.
The Mob Chat podcast ended in early 2024, with the stars of the Australian crime drama Mob Force losing interest in the project.
Peter, Alexandra, and Simon are self-described ‘superfans’ of the show, running a handful of Facebook fan groups together.
“The one year anniversary of the official podcast ending came around recently, and we posted a nostalgic look at our favourite moments on our three pages,” said Peter.
And the further reminiscing by fans in the comments sparked an idea for them to revive the podcast.
“I messaged the show’s creators on Twitter and, and after a bit of back of forth, they’re happy for us to take the reins,” said Alexandra.
“Even better, as it’ll be run under the same studio who did the original, we’ll all get paid for it!” said Simon.
Though the trio had to prove their superfandom first, being quizzed by the podcast’s producers via Zoom on their knowledge of the show, which was good enough for them to continue.
“A lot of fan podcasts fall away because the enthusiasm from the hosts isn’t matched by their technical knowledge, so we made sure they knew their stuff before going ahead,” said one of the producers. “It has the blessing of the old hosts and, depending how it goes, they may make guest appearances.”
The podcast has been renamed Mob Chat: The Fans’ Perspective and will begin in early May.
“We’re so excited now it’s been locked in. We’re going to start from the first episode and work our way up,” said Peter. “We’ve had weekly meetings to re-watch the show, take notes, and decide what angle we’re going to take. We want to analyse the show positively, as it’s still the official podcast. But most of the episodes are brilliant, so that won’t be a problem.”
