The new year is here, and that also means a new sporting year is upon us, but with so much on it is important to look for quality over quantity, so we offer up the 50 Ultimate 2020 Sporting Calendar Events for the Sports Nerd.
Sports nerd is of course an affectionate term here at The Gurgler website, if not at the heart of everything we do.
There are some big events on the 2020 Sporting Calendar, and some of them are included here but not all, and there’s just a bit of football. Just the way we like it.
We’re sure the 2.3 people who visit this site monthly will argue over the final selections, and we explain ourselves monthly after the full schedule, but anyway here are the 50 Ultimate 2020 Sporting Calendar Events for the Sports Nerd.
Whilst our list is exclusive and biased, a great website we heartily endorse is the SportsYear website, whose sports diaries we use to enjoy and who have all the sports fixtures organised.
50 Ultimate 2020 Sporting Calendar Full Schedule
50 Ultimate 2020 Sporting Calendar Monthly Explanation
JANUARY 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| January | 4th January / 25th January | Football | 3rd/4th Round FA Cup |
There’s already too much underway, with the never ending Big Bash series, so our sporting nerd list has just the FA Cup 3rd and 4th rounds as our sporting nerd stand out. Premier League up against and at some of the lower league clubs in the UK usually brings upsets, or at least something different to watch.
Of course there’s the summer of cricket, but it will head into meaningless One Day mode soon, and the Big Bash is reasonably meh at this stage until the final/s.
FEBRUARY 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| February | 3rd February | US Sports | Superbowl |
| February | 8th February | Cricket | Big Bash Final |
| February | 14th – 15th February | Rugby League | NRL Nines |
So if you are going to watch just one US sporting event in 2020, it may as well be the biggest. And the Superbowl provides many novelty betting options in the five and a half hour duration. Time taken to sing the national anthem and colour of the Gatorade thrown over the winning head coach the best.
Back in Australia the Big Bash final is always decent viewing, even if it no longer includes Brad Hogg. The NRL Nines returns, and is the best way to start a new rugby league season. It is also a great window into the great talent your club has that will waste away in the Qld/NSW Cup for the rest of the season.
MARCH 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| March | 1st March | Football | Spain – Real Madrid v Barcelona |
| March | 1st March | Football | Italy – Juventus v Inter |
| March | 9th March | Moto GP | Moto GP Season Opener |
| March | 12th March | Rugby League | NRL Season Opener |
| March | 15th March | F1 | Australian GP |
| March | 15th March | Football | Celtic v Rangers |
| March | 19th March | AFL | AFL Season Opener |
| March | 21st March | F2 | F2 Season Opener |
We start March with two key European football clashes, listed here as a title race have been few and far between in most of the big five European leagues in the last decade, so two key matches in March might have some say in ensuring a fight to the finish. Same for Celtic v Rangers later in the month. Those matches are always hard fought, but this game could swing the title so is even better viewing.
The Australian winter football seasons kick off for 2020 in March, and although it will eventually take a few months for the cynicism of an entire season to kick in, the first round is always exciting.
Some decent motor sport kicks off to. The F1 season blasts off in Melbourne, a race thankfully still the first for the season, as it would be too boring to have it any other time. Boring is not what you would usually call Moto GP, which gets underway a week before F1. And the hidden gem that is Formula 2 also launches in March, and is well worth your time as a sports nerd. If you aren’t already hooked. Of course you are.
APRIL 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| April | 5th April | F1 | Vietnam GP |
| April | 9th – 12th April | Golf | US Masters |
| April | 9th / 16th April | Football | Europa League Quarter Finals |
| April | 18th April to 4th May | Snooker | World Championships |
An eclectic mix in April going from the new Grand Prix from the hustle and bustle of Vietnam to the peaceful surrounds of Augusta National for the Masters. Then to Europe for the Quarter Finals of the Europa League, which is usually a real football hipster’s choice. Using even smaller balls is the Snooker World Championships, which is a nice peaceful sports nerd watch for those who have/find the time.
MAY 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| May | 1st – 3rd May | Rugby League | Magic Weekend – Brisbane |
| May | 3rd May | F1 | Dutch GP |
| May | 16th May | Football | League Two Playoffs |
| May | 23rd May | Football | FA Cup Final |
| May | 23rd – 24th May | Rugby League | UK Super League Magic Weekend |
| May | 24th May | F1 | Monaco GP |
| May | 24th May | Football | League One Playoffs |
| May | 25th May | Football | Championship Playoffs |
| May | 25th May | Motor Sports | Indy 500 |
| May | 27th May | Football | Europa League Final |
| May | 31st May | Football | Champions League Final |
| May | Late May to Early June | US Sports | Ice Hockey – Stanley Cup Finals |
Two big weekends of rugby league in May as the UK and Australian leagues have their big carnivals in Newcastle and Brisbane.
The Dutch Grand Prix returns, and this will be of interest for a few reasons, but mainly for us it is the new Indy style banked corner. F1 has needed a touch of Indy for years. Oh yeah, and the Indy 500 is actually on in May too. If you’re only going to watch one circular motor race for the year it may as well be Indy. Featuring much less overtaking, but slightly more cliches is the Monaco Grand Prix. The only time of year where sports fans pray for rain more than a drought affected farmer.
Loads of football finals too. The big European competitions have their big nights. All the big league have their final days of action, and the Football League have their big Wembley dates of ambition. Especially the Championship playoff, which sees one lucky team promoted into a myriad of cash.
JUNE 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| June | 3rd June | Rugby League | State of Origin 1 |
| June | 4th – 21st June | US Sports | NBA Finals |
| June | 13th – 14th June | Motor Sports | Le Mans 24 Hours |
| June | 18th June | Rugby League | Pacific Test |
| June | 18th June to 12th July | Football | Euro 2020 |
| June | 21st June | Rugby League | State of Origin 2 |
| June | 27th June to 19th July | Misc | Tour de France |
State of Origin is a paradox, a sporting event we look forward to very much but dread as it is the first time in 2020 that we’ll have to put up with the terrible Channel Nein dross/commentary.
At least Channel Nein barely like the Pacific Tests, so we can see the glorious PNG Kumuls build on their great win over Great Britain in late 2019.
Le Mans is great for many reasons, but our two favourites are the glorious burning of time watching and following, and the grand collection of forgotten F1 drivers who bob up for the big event.
A final paradox is the Tour de France. Normally we are not great fans of cyclists, but there is something about the late evening scenery that assists the insomnia.
JULY 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| July | 8th July | Rugby League | State of Origin 3 |
| July | 16th – 19th July | Golf | British Open |
| July | 24th July to 9th August | Olympics | 2020 Tokyo Olympics |
Hopefully the State of Origin is still live by this stage. And the British Open is great because it is so British. This year at Royal sandwich which will give opportunity for plenty of puns.
The Olympics starts in July, and is the greatest collection of obscure sports ever. Hopefully someone offers up the ability to watch those obscure sports like Badminton, Handball, Hammer Throw, and Walking, as you know the major stations will show a week of swimming.
AUGUST 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| August | August | Football | New Premier League season starts |
| August | 26th August | Misc | La Tomatina |
| August | 31st August | F1 | Belgian GP |
A new Premier League season always excites us at least, as a few weeks off from football hurts.
Same for the Belgian GP which doubles as F1’s best tracks, and the return after a summer break. Imagine four weeks without an F1 race.
La Tomatina may not be an official sporting event, but it is great.
SEPTEMBER 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| September | 26th September | AFL | AFL Grand Final |
| September | 27th September | Rugby League | QLD / NSW Grand Finals |
Finals for Australian winter football start in September, but the big events are the second tier rugby league finals in Qld and NSW, and the AFL Grand Final. We say it is Australia’s best grand final. And it is still in its traditional time slot. Fancy that.
OCTOBER 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| October | 4th October | Rugby League | NRL Grand Final |
| October | 8th – 11th October | Motor Sports | Bathurst 1000 |
| October | 18th Oct to 15th Nov | Cricket | T20 World Cup |
| October | 20th October | Rugby League | Kangaroos Tour of UK |
| October | 25th October | Moto GP | Australian GP |
The NRL Grand Final will hopefully involve less incompetence than 2019, but hopes won’t be allowed to get too high.
Talking of heights, one of the great sloth days on the 2020 sporting calendar is Bathurst 1000 around the mountain.
Cricket’s T20 World Cup will be mildly interesting. A return of the Australian Rugby League team doing a UK tour brings back fond memories.
NOVEMBER 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| November | November to December | Cricket | Tests v Afghanistan / India |
The summer of cricket starts with a test against Afghanistan. Then India arrive for what could be the number 1 and 2 tests nations in the world.
F1’s finale is not included as the championship is usually decided by then, and Abu Dhabi is a crap track.
DECEMBER 2020
| Month | Dates | Sport | Event |
| December | December | Darts | Darts World Championships |
Just the Darts listed here, which will give festive cheer. But you can also sample the start of the new Big Bash season, and loads of football in UK/Europe.Or take a hard earned rest.
