Round 11 INTRUST SUPER CUP – MINI PREVIEW
Here’s a quick rundown on all things Round 11 Intrust Super Cup and our thoughts for all of the games this weekend.
The full Team Lists for Round 11 can be found via our friends at Nothing But League.
NORTHERN PRIDE v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS
Saturday 4pm
@ Vico Oval, Cairns
Tweed Heads are going better than they have for many a year, and nothing proves that more than last against Easts breaking the Tigers unbeaten run at home in 2019. They are coming into the weekend’s clash in Cairns on the back of three straight wins.
The game against the Tigers was a low scoring 16-4 win, no surprise given Tweed Heads are the only team in the top 8 yet to break 200 points for the season so far. In fact, they are a good 38 points off the next lowest team in the top 8.
Northern Pride are the second lowest scorers of the whole competition, and their winless run since Round 3 continues. Eight straight losses leaves them in 11th, having been overtaken by Redcliffe last weekend.
No major team changes for the Seagulls, with six ins for the Pride. Even the return to fitness of off season recruit Brayden Torpy and NRL scapegoat Jake Clifford hasn’t halted the losses. But surely it will soon.
We Say: An upset is waiting in Cairns for no good reason.
TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS v EASTS TIGERS
Saturday 4pm
@ Jack Manski Oval
Two losses in a row now for the Tigers, who have now dropped to fifth in the tight battle for the top positions, aside from the Falcon’s seemingly untouchable first place.. The second of those two losses also brought about their first home loss of the season, the Tweed Heads Seagulls getting the job done in a bit of an upset.
Townsville saw their two game wining streak ended last weekend by the Sunshine Coast Falcons, no shame in that as the Falcons remain undefeated in 2019. Given the dominance of the Sunshine Coast, the 34-10 loss wasn’t too bad.
The Blackhawks have been great in defence in general, and are still the third best defensive side despite a loss last weekend and a drop to 7th place.
The home side welcome back their former captain Dan Beasley into the team, Easts have popular big man Albert Vete returning to the side.
We Say: Probably a tight low scoring affair which the Blackhawks will score late to win.
BURLEIGH BEARS v CENTRAL CAPRAS
Saturday 4pm
@ Pizzey Park
Bottom placed Central Capras have just the one win to their name this season, that coming in the first week at Davies Park like a lot of teams recently against the Magpies. So the last thing the Capras need to find winning ways is a trip to the all-winning, all-scoring Burleigh Bears.
Burleigh have won their past three games 56-4, 48-0, and 43-0 for a combined for and against total of 147-4. They haven’t conceded a point in 190 minutes.
A daunting prospect for the men from Rockhampton, and you can see that losing run going just a week longer.
No changes in the team list for either side.
We Say: One shouldn’t take previous results as the only form guide, but this could be 60 points +
IPSWICH JETS v SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS
Saturday 4pm
@ North Ipswich Reserve
This game should be entertaining if nothing else. A match up of two teams at either ends of the top eight.
Ipswich have won 50% of their games so far in 2019, and just 2/5 at home. With their two wins coming against bottom four clubs. They are yet to beat anyone from the top eight at home.
Sunshine Coast have won double the amount of games that Ipswich have, with their 100% record intact, and it is hard to see anyone having a day out against them just yet.
Especially when you consider they have scored 160 points in their last three away games.
No changes for the Jets heading into the game, and the Falcons have a few changes named, but you always have to wait for the Storm and who they may want this weekend. It hasn’t slowed them down yet.
We Say: Plenty of points, plenty of Sunshine Coast still undefeated.
MACKAY CUTTERS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS
Saturday 6pm
@ BB Print Stadium
Can Redcliffe turn their season around from here? Their fans will hopefully have more confidence that their season can saved after tearing it up against the Capras last weekend, turning a 43 point loss into a 42 point win in consecutive weeks.
The Dolphins win last weekend saw them amass 33% of their total points scored so far in 2019. Previously Redcliffe weren’t going very well in the attacking department.
Mackay are sitting just out of the top eight at the moment in 9th, but are on equal points with Redcliffe. So this effectively becomes a head to head. Their defence is going well, the total points conceded is actually less than fourth placed Norths Devils.
No changes to either side
We Say: Redcliffe to continue their good fortune on their Winter Sunshine tour of Central Queensland.
NORTHS DEVILS v WYNNUM SEAGULLS
Sunday 1:10pm
@ Bishop Park
TV GAME (NineGEM or App)
Another decent TV game, with the broadcasters getting it right for Week 11 of the Intrust Super as 3rd visits 4th. Wynnum are ahead by two points, and have lost just 2 games.
Wynnum are on a winning run of 4 games , although their away record is slightly worse with a 5-2. They have just one week left on the road before a good run of home games later in the season. Which is good because they are unbeaten at home so far this season.
Minimal changes for either sides, Norths welcome back Michael Sio, while there are none for the Wynn Seagulls.
We Say: The Devils in a tight one, with goal kicking the difference.
PNG HUNTERS v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES
Sunday 3:00pm
@ National Football Stadium
Intrust Super Cup Week 11 finishes up in PNG as the Hunters welcome the Souths Logan Magpies in a game where either desperately need a win.
At least for the Magpies the game is away from Davies Park, as their only wins have come on the road this season.
PNG Hunters can’t talk about home form either as they have lost all of their home games this season.
As ever there are quite a number of changes in the Hunters line up, the most interesting of these is Ase Boas being left out of the Top 17 for some reason. He is still named as a reserve in number 18,
There are plenty of new names added to the Losses & Gain weekly report, so we will have to wait until closer to kick off before finding out who is actually going to play. But Justin Yoka and Nick Hasu form another new halves combination for the Hunters.
Terry Wapi is a new name at fullback, another fluid position for the Hunters in 2019. One of the former fullbacks Adex Wera is named on the bench.
Both sides need that win, and hopefully it will be the Hunters triumphing.
We Say: Time for the Hunters to win at home.
