The final round of the NRL regular season is here, and there’s not really anything to play for, aside from a Minor Premiership that doesn’t really matter, and which sides can finish ahead of the Broncos. NRL Round 27 Tips – Weekly Barely Interesting Stats
Our famed barely interesting stats all in the one place for your convenience and arguments. We’ve added a plus or minus with the team in question to hint whether it’s a good or bad stat too, with the bolded stats our favourite.
THURSDAY 8PM – BULLDOGS v BRISBANE @ Accor Stadium
BUL+ > The home side (either team) has won all eight clashes between these sides on a Thursday.
BUL+ > Bulldogs are W6 L5 at the Olympic Stadium this season but have won the only Thursday clash this season, and four of the last five on a Thursday there v all sides.
BUL- > Bulldogs have lost their last four games v Qld sides at the Olympic Stadium.
BRI+ > Brisbane have won their last two games at the Olympic Stadium v Bulldogs.
BRI+ > Brisbane have won eight of their last nine games v Bulldogs.
BRI+ > Brisbane have won two of their last four away games.
BRI- > Brisbane are W2 L6 at the Olympic Stadium on a Thursday v all teams.
BRI- > Brisbane are W2 L3 v Sydney teams away this season.
??? > Bulldogs have the third lowest average score at home this season and the Broncos have the third lowest average score away.
Assessment: A lot of stats H2H say Broncos, but how can you take them on current form. They have been better away from home, but that home side stat on a Thursday says different for the Broncos chances.
FRIDAY 6PM – GOLD COAST v DOLPHINS
GCT- > Gold Coast have lost their last four home games, 6 of the last 7 on a Friday and five in a row at home to Qld sides.
GCT- > Gold Coast have lost both of their Friday games this season.
DOL+ > Dolphins have lost just twice since the end of April, winning 14 of their subsequent 16 games.
DOL+ > Dolphins have won all three games v Titans on the Gold Coast and lead the overall H2H by 6-1.
DOL+ > Dolphins have won all seven away games v Gold Coast/North Qld.
DOL+ > Dolphins have won seven of their last eight away games v all teams.
DOL+ > Dolphins have won 6 games in a row on a Friday.
??? > These teams have never met on a Friday.
Assessment: Surely the Dolphins won’t rest too many players, even so, their squad, record against the Titans and the Gold Coast’s lack of luck means they should win anyway.
FRIDAY 8PM – SOUTH SYDNEY v ROOSTERS @ Allianz Stadium
ROO+ > Roosters have won 6 of the last 7 matches v Souths.
ROO+ > Roosters have won 6 of the last 7 matches v Souths at the Sydney Football Stadium.
ROO+ > Roosters have won 7 of the last 8 matches v South on a Friday.
ROO+ > Roosters have never lost to Souths on a Friday at the Sydney Football Stadium (11 matches).
ROO+ > Roosters have won 17 of their last 20 as the home side on a Friday.
ROO+ > Roosters have won 15 of the last 17 games at the Sydney Football Stadium on a Friday.
ROO+ > Roosters have won 18 of their last 20 at the Sydney Football Stadium on a Friday v Sydney clubs.
SOU- > Souths have won only two of the 20 games they have played at the Sydney Football Stadium on a Friday since 1998 v all teams.
SOU- > The Rabbitohs win v Bulldogs in Round 24 broke a run of nine straight losses away on a Friday. Most of the losses were to Sydney clubs.
Assessment: There are so many stats going the Roosters way, but their last two losses are a concern, and South do get up for special games for Jai Arrow this season.
SATURDAY 3PM – WARRIORS v MANLY
WAHS+ > Warriors have now won five games straight and scored 40 or more points in four of those games.
WAHS+ > Warriors have won seven of their last eight games as the home side, and only 12 man Newcastle have scored more than 20 points in that run.
WAHS+ > Warriors are unbeaten in their last four games at Mt Smart Stadium v Manly (W3 D1).
WAHS+ > Warriors are W10 L3 on a Saturday this season – the second best win strike rate (77%) behind Canberra (78%).
WAHS- > Warriors have only won two of their last 6 at Mt Smart Stadium on a Saturday.
MAN+ > Manly have won 6 of their last 8 away on a Saturday.
MAN- > Manly have lost their last four games v non-NSW teams.
MAN- > Manly have won just one of their last 6 away games.
???> The last five games between these sides has ended W2 D1 L2.
Assessment: It should be some kind of atmosphere in Auckland as the Warriors close in on a Minor Premiership that we presume their fans most definitely care for. Manly have turned the corner, but overall form is nowhere near the Warriors.
SATURDAY 5:30PM – NORTH QUEENSLAND v CANBERRA
NQL+ > North Qld’s loss to Canberra in Round 13 did end a seven game winning streak against them.
NQL+ > North Qld have won five straight at Queensland Country Bank Stadium v Canberra.
NQL+ > Going back to 2007, North Qld have won 18 of the 23 games v Canberra at any ground on a Saturday.
NQL+ > North Qld have won 6 of their last 8 games on a Saturday and three in a row at Townsville on a Saturday.
CAN+ > Canberra (78%) have the best Saturday winning strike rate this season.
CAN+ > Canberra have won five of their seven away games on a Saturday.
CAN+ > Canberra have won their only Saturday clash this season v Qld clubs.
???> All 25 of the clashes between North Queensland and Canberra in Townsville have been played on a Saturday.
Assessment: North Qld have more to play for and a good record v Canberra and against them in Townsville. But Canberra are the best team on a Saturday this season.Â
SATURDAY 7:30PM – CRONULLA v MELBOURNE
CRO+ > Cronulla have won their last two and five of the last seven at home to Melbourne.
CRO+ > At Shark Park specifically, Cronulla have won four in a row v Melbourne.
CRO+ > Cronulla have won 14 of their last 16 at Shark Park v all teams.
CRO- > Cronulla have lost their last three at Shark Park on a Saturday.
MEL+ > Melbourne have won eight of the last 11 game v Cronulla.
MEL+ > Melbourne have won 10 of the last 12 games on a Saturday to Cronulla.
MEL- > Melbourne have lost their last four away games v Sydney teams.
MEL- > Melbourne are W3 L8 away this season.
Assessment: Cronulla’s form has left them at the wrong time of the year, and their good home record isn’t quite as good on a Saturday, and the Storm’s record v Cronulla recently would also be a concern.
SUNDAY 2PM – ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA v PARRAMATTA @ WIN Stadium
STI+ > St George Illawarra have won 12 of the last 15 home games v Parramatta.
STI+ > St George Illawarra have won five of their last six v Parramatta at WIN Stadium. Parramatta do lead the H2H 2-1 on a Sunday there though.
STI+ > Dragons have won their last two Sunday games.
STI- > The Dragons have lost five of their last six at WIN Stadium v Sydney sides and lost six of their last seven v Sydney sides at WIN Stadium on a Sunday.
PAR+ > Parramatta have won five of the last six v Dragons and 14 of the last 18.
PAR+ > Parramatta have won seven of the last eight v Dragons on a Sunday.
PAR- > Parramatta have lost five of their last six away games.
PAR- > The Eels’ Round 22 win over the Wests Tigers ended a run of nine straight losses away on a Sunday.
Assessment: Parramatta have a great record v the Dragons, but that disappears when they are the away team and St George Illawarra are ok at WIN Stadium. Parramatta did look great last weekend while the Dragons didn’t though.
SUNDAY 4PM – PENRITH v WESTS TIGERS @ CommBank Stadium
PEN+ > Penrith have won eight of the last nine home games v Wests Tigers.
PEN+ > Penrith have won all five games v Wests Tigers at CommBank Stadium.
PEN+ > Penrith have won eight in a row v Tigers on a Sunday with a last loss in 2013.
PEN+ > Penrith have won 16 of their last 17 Sunday games.
PEN+ > Since 2021 Penrith have won 32 of 36 games on a Sunday. It’s 16/17 in that run at home.
PEN+ > Penrith have won 11 straight games on a Sunday as the home side v Sydney teams going back to 2020.
PEN+ > Penrith have a 100% win rate this season for day games. Melbourne is the only other team. Brisbane’s day win % is 0%.
WTI+ > Wests Tigers have won three of their last four away games on a Sunday v Sydney teams.
WTI- > Wests Tigers have won just one of their last eight away games but at least it was against the Roosters.
Assessment: Penrith are just about unbeatable on a Sunday v every team, let alone a Tigers side who they like to thrash from time to time. But will Penrith rest or go for the Minor Premiership. If the Panthers do rest en masse, the tiger’s Sunday form isn’t as bad as you might presume.
