A middle-aged Brisbane man has launched a tirade against the Fourth of July on his Facebook profile.
Graham Marr wrote: “ANYONE who wishes me a ‘Happy Fourth of July’ will be IMMEDIATELY and PERMANENTLY BLOCKED!!! It’s bad enough the Americans have infected our AUSTRALIAN children with that Halloween nonsense! And all their bloody TV shows, movies, video games, and wild hippy-hoppy music! This is AUSTRALIA and I’m PROUD to be AUSTRALIAN! We are NOT Americans!”
But Cathy (Graham’s wife) pointed out his hypocrisy. “The old bugger watches documentaries on American history every Friday and Saturday night after I go to bed. He doesn’t think I can hear it, but I do. But what he watches when he has the telly to himself is none of my business. He doesn’t have it too loud, so I can still concentrate on my reading before going to sleep.”
Graham was quick to defend himself when questioned by Everyday News staff. “This is different! This is learning about history and staying informed! Not brainwashing children into pretending they’re from another country and putting on a fake American accent because it ‘sounds cool’. Australian is the greatest speaking language in the world and we shouldn’t be pretending to be someone else!”
