  • Aston Villa have not won at Newcastle since 2005 – Newcastle’s record is W9 D6.
  • The last six games between Chelsea and Liverpool in all competitions have ended in a draw. The last four it is 0-0.

  • Just over half of the teams relegated since 2010 lost their first game of the season.

More stats than you could probably ever want or need, for now.

FRIDAY 8PM – BURNLEY v MAN CITY

2023-24 Premier League Week 1 Predictions - BURMCI

Man City are on a nine game winning streak v Burnley and won 13 of the last 14 with a draw in there. Burnley have not scored v Man City in any of their last five matches. Friday is currently the only day these teams have yet to meet on. Erling Haaland scored six goals in six games v promoted sides last season.

OUR PREDICTION

Burnley 0 Man City 2

It might be an all-new Burnley managed by former Man City play Vincent Kompany, but can’t see past an old-time Man City win here.

SATURDAY 12:30PM – ARSENAL v NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Arsenal’s last loss at home to Nottingham Forest pre-dates the Premier League in 1989 – their record over this streak is W8 D4. Nottingham Forest won just one game last season away from home and averaged 0.42 points per game on the road.

OUR PREDICTION

Arsenal 3 Nottingham Forest 0

A few shiny new toys and expectations for Arsenal to start the season, playing against the side who was the worst away side from last season’s Premier League.

SATURDAY 3PM – BOURNEMOUTH v WEST HAM

2023-24 Premier League Week 1 Predictions - BOUWHU

Bournemouth ended their previous season with four straight losses. West Ham have won the last three games v Bournemouth by a combined 10-0. Bournemouth have never lost to West Ham on a Saturday W4 D3.

OUR PREDICTION

Bournemouth 0 Wet Ham 2

Jarrod Bowen to star as West Ham ease the pressure on David Moyes for a week. Talking of managers, Bournemouth have their first non British-Irish manager in Spaniard Andoni Iraola, hired from Rayo Vallecano.

SATURDAY 3PM – BRIGHTON v LUTON TOWN

Brighton are unbeaten in their last four to Luton on a Saturday, winning three. Luton and Brighton have only played in the top flight once before – in 1982/83 where Luton won 4-2 away and 5-0 at home.

OUR PREDICTION

Brighton 3 Luton 0

Brighton were the team to watch last season for many reasons, and no reason they shouldn’t be again this season. Joy for the Permier League’s smallest ever club, who not long ago were in the fifth tier Conference League. They got deducted 30 points the season Bournemouth got deducted 17 points and survived in the fourth division. Interesting that both of those clubs eventually made it to the top flight.

SATURDAY 3PM – EVERTON v FULHAM

The home side has failed to win the last four matches for Everton v Fulham. Fulham have only won two of 23 at Everton. Everton have lost just two gameweek 1 fixtures – W4 D6 L2.

OUR PREDICTION

Everton 3 Fulham 0

Everton to leave behind a dreadful 2022-23 season and jump out of the blocks with a few early wins. One of last year’s surprises Fulham we have to struggle this season, but aware that our thoughts are likely to be reversed in reality.

SATURDAY 3PM – SHEFFIELD UTD v CRYSTAL PALACE

Crystal Palace beat Sheffield Utd 2-0 in both games last time they were in the Premier League. Crystal Palace won just two of their 12 away games on a Saturday last season. Sheffield United won their last five home games in the Championship last season.

OUR PREDICTION

Sheffield Utd 1 Crystal Palace 2

Many FPL players will be hoping Eberechi Eze gets Crystal Palace off to a great start, and our above predictions stays they will. But hard to judge promoted Sheffield United, who were the surprise packet when they jumped up to the Premier League last time.

SATURDAY 5:30PM – NEWCASTLE v ASTON VILLA

2023-24 Premier League Week 1 Predictions - NEWAVL

Aston Villa have not won at Newcastle since 2005 – Newcastle’s record is W9 D6. It gets slightly worse looking at goals scored during that run – Aston Villa have only scored seven goals in 15 games and never more than one in a game. Aston Villa were one of just eight teams to win a game v top six opposition away last season.

OUR PREDICTION

Newcastle 1 Aston Villa 1

Two clubs on the move, but Newcastle didn’t go as silly in the transfer market as one would have thought given Champions League football this season. Hard to pick so we’ve chickened out and tipped the draw.

SUNDAY 2PM – BRENTFORD v SPURS

Brentford are unbeaten in their last three v Spurs (W1 D2). The last three games at Brentford v Spurs have ended in a draw. Both of these clubs had the same record v London clubs last season Brentford (H) and Spurs (A) – W2 D3 L1.

OUR PREDICTION

Brentford 1 Spurs 2

As an Australian with that supports a mediocre lower division team, the Premier League will be a lot about Ange Postecoglou as we prepare to board the Spurs bandwagon. They surely can’t be as bad as they were at times last season. We are in danger of getting this prediction wrong if Harry Kane and Spurs say Ja to Bayern Munich.

SUNDAY 4:30PM – CHELSEA v LIVERPOOL

2023-24 Premier League Week 1 Predictions - CHELIV

The last six games between these sides in all competitions have ended in a draw. The last four it is 0-0. Liverpool (W3 D1) are undefeated in the last four Sunday league clashes – three of those were at Chelsea.

OUR PREDICTION

Chelsea 0 Liverpool 0

Probably another 0-0 draw, so no point wasting any more energy on the summary.

SUNDAY 8PM – MANCHESTER UNITED V WOLVES

Man Utd’s record v Wolves at home in the Premier League era is W9 D2 L1. Wolves lost all six games away to big six clubs last season, conceding 16 goals and scoring none.

OUR PREDICTION

Manchester Utd 5 Wolves 0

Excitement and expectations are building at Manchester United. That could probably never be said for Wolves.
