2021 Intrust Super Cup Round 13 Stats & Match by Match Preview

Here is where we go through each game on offer this weekend with the teams, stats and points of interest to get into your local team this weekend.

Round 13 Teams originally published on QRL website.

SATURDAY 2:10PM BURLEIGH BEARS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS

BROADCAST GAME

THOUGHTS & STATS

The weekend kicks off with the Gold Coast rivalry which until this season had been dominated by the Bears.

It’s not a bad season for the Gold Coast teams so far this season sitting in third and fifth, their combined ladder positions still lower than their NRL parent club.

The Bears got off to a slow start losing three of their first four games, but the home record is 100% this season which will be a tough one for the Tweed as the Bears have the lowest average points conceded at home this season too (13).

Tweed aren’t hopeless away from home this season though, how could they be if they sit third on the ladder. They have won their last three on the road, losing their only other game.

But they have lost four in a row at Pizzey Park.

PREDICTION

Bears by 8

SATURDAY 3:00PM SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS v PNG HUNTERS

BROADCAST GAME

THOUGHTS & STATS

The 2021 season started off so promisingly for the Hunters. A close loss to Wynnum in the first round, three wins in a row after that and a close loss on Anzac Day to Burleigh. And downhill since.

Not even their most winnable game (v Souths Logan at Davies Park) could turn around the fortunes.

The decline did begin with the departure of Watson Boas, but in his brother Ase and Charlie Simon they still have a solid pair of hands in the halves.

Recently they have lost one of their bright prospects Jokadi Bire who is thankfully recovering in a Gold Coast hospital after being rushed there weeks ago.

A bigger loss arguably is forward Epel Kapinias and try scoring machine Terry Wapi. Kapinias is due back for Round 18 but some good news is that Terry Wapi is back this weekend.

Good timing too as the Hunters face a team that they face one of the few teams they have beaten this season, and they did it well in the first rivalry round.

But it’s hard to tip a side that have lost seven in a row. Even worse is they have lost five in a row on the Sunshine Coast and their last game there was a 60-6 loss in 2019. That Falcons side did contain Harry Grant.

The Falcons have only won from six home games this season and lost three in a row, they have comfortably beaten two sides from the bottom four, and sadly the Hunters are one of those four teams.

PREDICTION

Falcons by 12

SATURDAY 4:00PM BRISBANE TIGERS v IPSWICH JETS

BROADCAST GAME

THOUGHTS & STATS

Ipswich are yet to win away this season, with the only point they have earned being from a draw in their last road trip to meet the Capras.

The Jets have only taken three points this season and all of them have been against the Rockhampton based side.

Coincidentally the last Brisbane side Ipswich beat was the Tigers back in July 2019.

The Tigers hold the record for games on a Saturday by a whopping 7-2, so there’s another cross against an Ipswich win.

But the Tigers aren’t in premiership winning form either, or in fact top eight form, as they have lost their last five and sit 10th in 2021.

In a nice twist of the numbers, the Tigers last win over a Brisbane based side is in fact Ipswich. And yes, we could Ipswich as Brisbane. They are in their NRL 2023 bid, so we can too.

Ipswich’s record v the Tigers is actually better at Easts (3-3) than in their own backyard (1-6)

PREDICTION

Tigers by 4

SATURDAY 5:30PM NORTHERN PRIDE v TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS

BROADCAST GAME

THOUGHTS & STATS

Foley Shield continues this weekend where the Pride of Cairns take on the Blackhawks of Townsville.

In an upset of sorts based on historic results the Pride got past Townsville in the first Rivalry Round,

Amazingly the Blackhawks have won all four games played at Barlow Park since their arrival in the competition. So that helps.

It should be pretty close with the Pride winning their last three home games, scoring 24, 24 and 26 in the process. Townsville meanwhile average 28 points away.

PREDICTION

Blackhawks by 2

SATURDAY 6:00PM REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v WYNNUM SEAGULLS

THOUGHTS & STATS

Bayside derby getting ready to rumble again and plenty to play for as ever.

Wynnum look to keep their spot on the top of the pile, and Redcliffe are one of four teams from 4th to 7th on 14 competition points.

One thing going against the Dolphins this season is their record against the Seagulls. That’s both Flockbuster Seagulls teams. Redcliffe have lost four games this season and three of those have been against either Tweed Heads or Wynnum. A loss to Wynnum here would see the clean sweep of feathered flops.

Sadly the Dolphins play a lot less home games on a Sunday, perhaps they’re preparing well for the NRL, but the Dolphins have won six in a row at home on a Sunday and last lost in March 2018.

PREDICTION

Wynnum by 8

SATURDAY 6:00PM MACKAY CUTTERS v CENTRAL CAPRAS

BROADCAST GAME

THOUGHTS & STATS

Some welcome points coming for either one of these sides this weekend.

Both teams currently sit on two competition points, the Capras are yet to win but have lost fewer games than Mackay courtesy of two draws.

But Mackay have won a game this season it was in Rivalry Round against the Capras earlier in the season.

But there is a stat on the Capras side. Looking back at the last eight games Central have won every fourth game. And seeing Mackay have now won three in a row, the pattern says it is the Capras this weekend.

PREDICTION

Cutters by 2

SUNDAY 2:10PM NORTHS DEVILS v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES

BROADCAST GAME

THOUGHTS & STATS

Game of the round in our opinion to end the second part of Rivalry Round. While this might not usually rate in pure rivalry terms, their ladder position of second and fourth creates enough interest.

Having seen the Devils live this season, they look real deal and have a good mix of ISC and NRL experience and young guns. One of those young guns is Xavier Willison who was part of the Broncos game day squad against the Sharks. They could do worse than to keep him around if only for superstitious reasons as they won a game. But on the field Willison was only playing colts for Norths a few months ago and now is on the verge of the NRL. Having seen him handle the onslaught of a fired up PNG Hunters a month ago, he’s NRL ready.

Bernard Gregorius has also caught the eye for the Devils. The NRL’s Tyrone Roberts is also a handy pair of hands to have around and the experienced Jack Ahearn looks as good as ever.

Talking of former NRL, Kevin Locke makes an appearance for the Magpies this weekend.

A worry for the Devils is their home record v Magpies as they haven’t won any of their five games at Bishop Park since 2014. The one home win was at Suncorp Stadium.

Souths Logan are also undefeated against Norths on a Sunday since 2014. The Magpies might not have any big NRL names around this weekend, but their five wins in a row shows that haven’t really needed them. Well, one in particular.

But that’s all history and 2021 is a different season, and the Devils look good.

PREDICTION

Devils by 6
