The Neutral Who Cares Guide to the 2015 NRL Grand Final – The Final Kick to Come

The NRL’s big showpiece event the NRL Grand Final kicks off on Sunday, and although the Courier Mail got exactly what it had been spruiking for months, what do the rest of the rugby league community do on Sunday whose teams have been there and drunk that on their respective Mad Mondays. We have a Who Cares Neutral Guide to the big day, that will hopefully give some guidance for the person looking for reasons to care.

1 – ENTERTAINMENT

For once, this is where the NLR has the AFL covered, for two reasons even. Firstly, whilst the AFL Grand Final game is a big deal, it is the only game on the day, and this leaves fans and punters to sit there and soak up all the hype, pomp and ceremony that can be shovelled in their direction. Including whichever entertainer they have plucked to perform to the masses. The NRL provide three big games of rugby league including the excellent and overdue State Championship between the NSW and QLD Cup winners. You can read the preview of the State Championship here.

Entertainment is the second area the NRL have the AFL well covered. Whilst there’s not much difference between the prime years of Cold Chisel and Bryan Adams, it is hard to argue that the Canadian and his first six string is better than one of Australia’s finest bands. The NRL have worked out that wheeling out a Channel 9 affiliated “star” is low grade dross.

2 – DRINKING

It is one of the big drinking days – and the lack of a team to directly support can be a good thing. For your consideration, why not try our NRL Grand Final Drinking Game.

3 – BETTING

Another way to give yourself many reasons to care is gambling. There are hundreds of betting options of varying skill and interest. Plenty of companies will be tempting you with money back specials, so why not take them on, and increase your care-ability of the NRL Grand Final.

We recommend the last try scorer option as the best value. The Clive Churchill Medal is not as much fun as the AFL equivalent as it usually goes to certain position unless there is an exceptional game elsewhere.

The Gurgler always likes to share their tips, and why wouldn’t we offload our selections.

  • BRONCOS – IPSWICH – PENRITH Treble @ $5.35

4 – WHO TO SUPPORT FOR A NEUTRAL

So, if you are from NSW or are anyone that doesn’t particularly like the Broncos or Cowboys, or doesn’t really care at all, here’s a list of pros and cons for your consideration.

BRONCOS CON – They are from Qld – if you are from NSW
COWBOYS CON – They are from Qld – if you are from NSW
COWBOYS PRO – They are underdogs
COWBOYS PRO – This would be their first title
BRONCOS CON – They’ve already won plenty of titles
BRONCOS CON – They are partially owned by News Corp
BRONCOS PRO – They have 1 x English Rep – for English fans
BRONCOS PRO – They have 2 x NZ Reps – for NZ fans
BRONCOS PRO – They have more Qld Origin Reps – if you are from Qld
BRONCOS CON – They have more Qld Origin Reps – if you are from NSW
COWBOYS PRO – They have less Qld Origin Reps – if you are from NSW
COWBOYS CON – They have less Qld Origin Reps – if you are from Qld
COWBOYS CON – They have one NSW Origin Rep – if you are from Qld
COWBOYS PRO – They have one NSW Origin Rep – if you are from NSW
BRONCOS PRO – Milford and Hunt pairing bringing entertainment back
COWBOYS PRO – Thurston and Morgan double act also good.
BRONCOS CON – Justin Hodges polarises like few others
BRONCOS PRO – They play in Maroon
BRONCOS CON – They play in Maroon
BRONCOS PRO – Wayne Bennett – and prospect of a smile and the press conference
BRONCOS PRO – Corey Parker – perennially likeable
COWBOYS PRO – Jake Granville for Afro fans
COWBOYS CON – 1300 Smiles Stadium name stinks
BRONCOS PRO – Their team showed up for Dally M’s
COWBOYS PRO – Cowboys eliminated Melbourne – allowing for an exciting Grand Final free of ruck rubbish
BRONCOS PRO – Broncos knocked out the Roosters.
CON – The Courier Mail – and their campaign to make Justin Hodges look like Mandela/Peter Grieste/WW2 POWs combined as the greatest injustice in the history of the Universe.
CON – The Courier Mail – for having the hide to call themselves Newspaper of the Year
BRONCOS PRO – For Paul Hauff lookalikes in Corey Oates
BRONCOS PRO – Lots of Mascots
COWBOYS PRO – Closer to Great Barrier Reef
BRONCOS PRO – Their feeder team beat the Cowboys’ feeder team
BRONCOS PRO – They won the race to Sydney

By our count it is Broncos 13 Pros and 6 Cons for +7 result. Cowboys have 8 Pros and 4 Cons for a result of +4. So based on the net result it is the Broncos for the neutral. Or get tally poppy chopping and go the Cowboys anyway. Or just drink and gamble up a storm and forget about it. If you take on the drinking game, you probably will.
