The annual poll to decide the year’s biggest Jerk has closed, and Jarryd Hayne, Donald Trump, Bernard Tomic have all tied at the top for 2017 Jerk of the Year as voted by the readers of The Gurgler.
It was our biggest year yet with 141 votes cast, and the quality field with so many Jerks meant the votes were spread widely across the deserving candidates.
In the end the 2017 Jerk of the Year came down to arguably the World’s biggest Jerk in Donald Trump, one of Sport’s biggest Jerks in Bernard Tomic, and the perennially unlikable Jarryd Hayne.
Jarryd Hayne had led the voting for nearly the whole voting period, but was just beaten to the sole crown in the last few hours. Just like Origin Two, or most of his sporting endeavours – early promise – not enough winning mentality.
Donald Trump made headlines, and had about two articles written about him on most news website every day, and his manner of running the USA demanded selection as 2017 Jerk of the Year. I guess the worrying things for him would be that he didn’t win it outright. One won’t have to use too much imagination to see him nominating again, and again in 2018.
Bernard Tomic too has thoroughly earned his Joint 2017 Jerk of the Year award, with his 2017 Wimbledone “performance” being the Jerk highlight amongst a sea of Jerkdom in 2017, carrying on the fine work of fellow Tennis Jerk Nick Kyrgios and his own from the last few years. Kyrgios looks to be at least turning the corner, despite getting a healthy 8% of the vote in equal fourth after a solid year of Jerk Work in 2017.
Channel Nein Rugby League tied with Kyrgios, proving that it is not just us who hate them with a passion.
Further back the former Newspaper of the Year polled strongly, along with the former competent keeper of the game of rugby league the NRL, and the former this and that Cocaine Cassie, and former A Current Affair Jerk and accused B-Lover Ben McCormack.
