Another big weekend of NRL action featuring Cowboy hats and losses. There were star performances, work horses giving it their all, and a few getting a spray from Des Hasler. But which players were the best of the best you ask? We’ll let the stats do the talking and separate the Wheat/Chaff to present the 2024 NRL Round 4 Team of the Week & Player Stats.
First we have our Team of the Week, which takes some of the key player stats from the weekend and using various scoring methods come up with the best players in their positions from the latest round of the NRL.
Then there’s additional player stats from this weekend and some bite sized points of interest.
We’ve used the stats for each position and picked the best starting 13 players from the most recent round, the stats and points assigned are explained at the end.
On top of the best starting 13, we include the best four interchange players of the week. Seeing who has provided maximum impact from the bench.
Plus we throw in the players we thought were great but the stats did not with Gurgler’s Choice.

Here is a quick look at the H2H Player stats from the most recent round in key positions.
INTERESTING STATS FROM THIS ROUND
Three players made five errors this weekend – Tom Trobjevic, Scott Drinkwater and Selwyn Cobbo – joining Blake Wilson for the single game high for 2024.
Adam Reynolds’ 645 kicking metres in the wet on Friday night was the fourth best single round effort for the season so far. The top two positions are by Jamal Fogarty.
Haumole Olakau’atu and Patrick Carrigan ran for over 200 metres in Round 4, including those, that has happened just seven times in a match by a forward this season.
The starting props for the Dolphins combined for five assists (Line Break or Try). Jesse Bromwich’s two Line Break Assists and one Try Assist is well on the way to bettering his 2023 tally of three and five respectively.
Josh Kerr’s 365 run metres is top ten for players off the bench in 2024.
Jamayne Isaako’s 10 Tackle Breaks is a new single match record since he joined the Dolphins.
Dylan Edwards has already passed 1,000 run metres for 2024. More than 200 metres clear of next best Brian To’o.
Izack Tago’s efforts has seen Centres become the current top position for Line Break Assists and Try Assists.

2024 NRL Round 4 Stats Summary
NRL Round 4 Stats Summary – Points of Interest
BEING A PLAYER UP DOESN’T ALWAYS LEAD TO SUCCESS
So far this season we have ten players have been sent to the Sin Bin, and the current stats show that it doesn’t end up an advantage.
In ten occurrences of a sin binning, the team that goes down to 12 players has actually won 4/10 games.
Of those ten, we were able to determine in nine of those games, only three teams conceded at least one try, six times the team down to 12 players didn’t concede.
And some basic Sin Bin stats for 2024 so far.
A TALE OF TWO HALVES
They say a lot of games can be a tale of two halves. To prove that wrong or right are some stats from the 2024 NRL season so far.
Some quick points…
No team has a 100% winning record of any half.
Newcastle have lost all their second halves.
Five teams have had a first half lead and lost.
Penrith are the third lowest scorers in the second half.
Gold Coast have scored four second half points this season.
BEST OF NRL ROUND 4 STATS QUICK HITS
Penrith have not lost to the Roosters since Covid. That’s nine wins in a row with a last loss in 2019.
Souths have won six Good Friday games in a row v Bulldogs. It is W9 L3 overall on Good Friday since 2013.
Bulldogs have won only one game on a Friday since Covid. That’s W1 L15. And lost all nine games away in that period.
Broncos have won 25/29 home games on a Friday v Queensland opponents since 1998. This includes the last nine games in a row and 17 of their last 18.
Cowboys have won just two of their last 16 away games on a Friday going back to 2019.
St George Illawarra have won 10/12 games v Manly at Win Stadium. And 6/7 on a Saturday v Manly there.

Dolphins are the first team this season to win the game after a bye. Gold Coast are one of the other two teams who didn’t.

The F1 circus heads into Asia for the first time in 2024 with a visit to Japan for the only figure eight track on the schedule coming months earlier than usual. Talking of figure eight and eight figures, our 2024 Japanese F1 Grand Prix Preview is hardly that but will do as a quick look at the upcoming big weekend of Formula 1.
The Gurgler’s 2024 Japanese F1 Grand Prix Preview brings some thoughts on the race itself, a few bold predictions here and there, a more than a few barely interesting stats.
Essentially a quick summary of what a casual F1 fan needs in the shortest possible time for your convenience.
By Will Pittenger – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=8986552
The track map looks like a funky fly swatter, or someone with an eye for the creative bending a paperclip into a piece of art. The actual circuit is a piece of art for motorsport, with fast, flowing corners, and providing a challenge that separates the good from the very, very good. The chicane also can see some of the great overtakes and moments of bravery and over-ambition.
2024 Japanese F1 Grand Prix Preview – Race Rating
The Gurgler does like to use some obscure drivers in our Race previews and report, so who better to use than Teo Fabi to determine a race rating system.
So before each race we give a rating out of ten for four key category that are loosely based on each letter of Teo Fabi’s surname. Don’t know who Teo Fabi is, you should.
FAST? 9/10 – It’s plenty fast, with some of the great fast corners on the calendar. The 130R before the final chicane. The sweeping curves after the magnificent first turn. Then the first half of the double right handers leading into going under the bridge, which is an underrated challenge on a circuit which has plenty of them. And the plunging downhill sweep into the Spoon curve. So many.
ACTION? 9/10 – It is a track where stuff usually happens. Mostly in the past it was because it was the first race of the season and drivers had yet to get up to speed, but since Albert Park was bumped from the first race there’s still plenty of action. Look at last year’s race which was a 10/10 for action.
BIG HISTORY? – 9/10 The Japanese Grand Prix has been around at Suzuka since 1987, give or take some Covid and a brief move to Fuji, and is the home of some of F1 biggest moments of the past few decades. Namely the infamous Prost-Senna clashes of 1989 and 1990. Or the one of the greatest Grand Prix races anywhere – the 2005 Japanese Grand Prix. The move to April means Championships won’t be decided this time around, but the result may still be important.
INCLEMENT WEATHER? – 9/10 The Japanese Grand Prix usually throws up a bit of different weather conditions and the Weather Channel forecast shows a 70% chance of rain on Sunday raceday. Throw in a 39% chance for showers in the PM to spoil/enhance qualifying and we have a classic F1 weekend on our hands ahead.
RACE RATING 90% – It’s truly one of the great tracks,
2024 Japanese F1 Grand Prix Preview – Stats

Max Verstappen to take pole position by 0.8 seconds.

Rain will see a third of the field eliminated.
Logan Sargeant will get a car for the whole weekend. And bin on the first lap.
Sergio Perez will miss Q3.
Daniel Ricciardo will not make an impression, missing Q3 and points, and leave Japan under even more pressure.
But it will still be more than a Sauber/Kick/Stake.
2024 Japanese F1 Grand Prix Preview – Stats Extra
We had a thought whilst doing our stats…the Japanese Grand Prix feels like it is one of those races where pole position wins a lot. As our visuals above prove, but is it the most likely of any GP?
Here are the stats…this is for all Grands Prix, while previous Grid to Result visuals are for 2001 and beyond.
2024 NRL Round 4 Titans v Dolphins – GOLD COAST TITANS 14 DOLPHINS 30. The one-minute match report – giving you the bare minimum NRL round up in the bare minimum of time.
The Dolphins sit temporarily on top of the NRL ladder after a convincing victory over the Gold Coast Titans on the Gold Coast. It is the Dolphins second win there and third of three v Titans since their inception in 2023.
It wasn’t looking likely during the first half as the Titans took a 10-0 lead with tries to Jaimin Jolliffe and Phillip Sami by the 12th minute, and not long after Jack Bostock opened the scoring for the Dolphins, Max Plath was sent to the sin bin for a hip drop of Phillip Sami.
Titans errors meant they weren’t able to take advantage of the extra player, and the Dolphins went on to score just before the break and snatch the half time lead 12-10.
What followed after the break was an impressive half of rugby league from the Dolphins as they powered the Titans off the park, and three tries in 11 minutes from the 57th out the game beyond doubt. First Dolphins tries to Herbie Farnworth, Josh Kerr sandwiched Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow’s fourth try of the season, which sees him equal third on the NRL try scoring list now.
The Titans were heading for a fourth scoreless half in three games but skipped that avoidable stat with a soft consolation try to Phillip Sami in the 74th minute.
FINAL THOUGHT:
It could have been a much different result, but the resolve of the Dolphins during the ten minute sin-binning of Max Plath showed their true colours. Albeit helped with some basic Titans errors. It may not be pretty as other sides, but it is very effective. The spirit of the team is hard to match in the NRL.
It was another step up for the big name signings from the Broncos. Herbie Farnworth scored his first try and was very effective. Tom Flegler had a massive game and provided some real momentum up the middle. As did Josh Kerr off the bench for a second game in a row. Skipper Jesse Bromwich arguably had his finest game for the Dolphins also.
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has left that Round 1 performance well behind and is back to being electric in attack, including a magnificent tap-on for one Jack Bostock try. But equally important is he has returned to being ultra reliable at the back too.
There’s still room for improvement, but at the time of writing the Dolphins are on top of the ladder. They might be favoured with an easy early draw and an early bye, but it is hard to argue with the manner of the two victories after the Round 1 loss to the Cowboys. For now, it doesn’t matter for how long, being on top is something to enjoy. Who would have thought. Even Wayne Bennett was smiling in the dressing rooms afterwards.

BEST OF STATS
Dolphins are currently unbeaten against the Gold Coast Titans in three games. The other side the Dolphins have a 100% record against is Cronulla.
Dolphins have now won 3/4 away games v Qld sides.
Gold Coast have lost six straight at home on a Saturday, and just two of 11 games at home to Qld opposition on a Saturday. Plus, just one of 12 home games v top eight opposition going back to 2022.
Dolphins are the first team this season to win the game after a bye. Gold Coast are one of the other two teams who didn’t.
The starting props for the Dolphins combined by five assists (Line Break or Try). Jesse Bromwich’s two Line Break Assists and one Try Assist is well on the way to bettering his 2023 tally of three and five respectively.
Josh Kerr’s 365 run metres is top ten for players off the bench in 2024.
The Dolphins win broke a run of six straight losses to lower half teams.
Jamayne Isaako’s 10 Tackle Breaks is a new single match record since he joined the Dolphins.
Round 4 Roosters v Panthers – SYDNEY ROOSTERS 16 – PENRITH PANTHERS 22. The one-minute match report, giving you the bare minimum NRL in the bare minimum of time.
Penrith has opened the Easter long weekend with a win at the SFS. While Penrith dominated the majority of the game, the Eastern Suburbs club came back with two tries in the last six minutes (Brandon Smith, Daniel Tupou).
Though the Roosters declined the conversion after Tupou’s try, they couldn’t produce the miracle play to possibly take the game to Golden Point. Sunia Turuva scored a hat-trick as the Panthers established a 22-6 lead. Dylan Edwards lifted in Nathan Cleary’s absence, with a try and three goals.
There was some controversy after a Joseph Manu try was denied in the first half: Jared Waerea-Hargreaves was ruled to have obstructed Edwards from potentially getting across to defend, even though Edwards was behind the goalposts before he was impeded.
Match Summary above courtesy of Not Six Again – NRL Fanatics & Banter. For more NRL Banter and Views please follow the link below.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Some performance from Penrith without their general Nathan Cleary, and they are well on their way to a fourth title in a row. Considering the team they beat tonight is the one most fancy to take the title off them. Dylan Edwards also gave himself a chance of NSW Origin selection with another fine game against the Blues current fullback.
Courtesy of nrl.com
Penrith have not lost to the Roosters since Covid. That’s nine wins in a row with a last loss in 2019.
Penrith are undefeated against the Roosters on a Thursday as they have never met on a Thursday before.
The last six matches at Allianz Stadium between these two sides have seen less than 40 total points scored.
Dylan Edwards has already passed 1,000 run metres for 2024. More than 200 metres clear of next best Brian To’o.
Izack Tago’s efforts has seen Centres become the current top position for Line Break Assists and Try Assists.

2024 NRL Round 3 Stats Summary
NRL Round 3 Stats Summary – Points of Interest
HOME WINS CONTINUE
You may not remember, but Round 2 saw the home side win all the matches for the first time for a full eight game round since Round 26 in 2014. Well Round 3 saw that almost repeated with seven home wins from the eight games. So that’s 15 home wins in the last 16 games.
POINTLESS RABBITOHS
South Sydney haven’t started 2024 very well. In fact they have been ordinary for a while now. Souths have won just four games of 16 since leading the competition in Round 11 last season. But their 0-3 record isn’t as regular as you’d think. You have to go all the way back to 2008 for the last time South Sydney lost their first three games of the season. Coincidentally it took them until Round 8 to win their first game.
IN OTHER WOODEN SPOON NEWS….
The Gold Coast Titans have opened the season with two losses in a row and currently ahead of Souths thanks to a bye but are arguably going worse than the Rabbitohs. It was the ninth time under the Titans banner that the Gold Coast were kept scoreless. This was the ninth time in their history that they failed to score. They are equal fifth worst for zero points, but more on that later.
Not only was it zero points v Bulldogs, but the Titans also scored zero in the second half in their opening round match v Dragons. Which means three of their four halves this season have been pointless. In their last nine matches five of their halves have passed without scoring. Five other halves in that run have seen six points or less.
Talking of zero points, here is the stats for teams scoring zero point since the Titans arrived in 2007.
GRAND FINAL REMATCH
Of the 26 Grand Final rematches since 1999, 13 reigning premiers have lost and 13 have now won the first match after the Grand Final in the next season. Penrith’s record is W4 L1, and Brisbane are W1 L4.
BEST OF NRL ROUND 3 STATS QUICK HITS
Warriors have won nine of their last 11 games on a Friday.
The Bulldogs win was the first time since they returned to Belmore in 2015 that they have beaten a Queensland team at the ground. It was the seventh time since 1998 that the Bulldogs have kept a side to nil. The first time since they beat the Tigers 38-0 at Redcliffe in 2021.
Dragons have lost their last four home games on a Saturday.
Parramatta have won nine of their last ten home games v Manly
Plus Parramatta have won nine home games in a row on a Sunday.
Newcastle have won their last 11 games on a Sunday.

All eight games with all the stats you could ever want or need.
Another big weekend of NRL action where some premiership favourites flexed their muscles. There were star performances, work horses giving it their all, and sadly a few big names players going down with injury. But which players were the best of the best you ask? We’ll let the stats do the talking and separate the Wheat/Chaff to present the 2024 NRL Round 3 Player Stats and Team of the Week.

INTERESTING STATS FROM THIS ROUND
This game saw Dylan Edwards pass 300 running metres in a match for the fifth time since 2022.
Ezra Mam is now on top for missed and ineffective tackles. Five eighths in general miss the second most tackles, behind hookers. The onfield position for clarification.
Tom Trbojevic is top for errors made in 2024. Fullbacks top the NRL for most mistakes on average per game – 1.3. For the record props make the fewest errors per game at 0.2.
Cronulla’s Royce Hunt leads the way for Post Contact Metres as a % of All Run Metres at 61%.
80% of Keaon Koloamatangi’s runs featured a tackle break. Pity South Sydney sucked on Friday v Roosters.
Currently every fifth run for Izack Tago ends in a line break.
Valentine Holmes almost ended up with a Full House (no, not that one) of attacking stats in the Cowboys win over the Dragons (no, not that one) of attacking stats. Topping Run Metres, Post Contact Metres, Tackle Breaks and Line Breaks. Sadly he fell short with “only” 1 Line Break Assist and 1 Try Assist.
How the Team of the Week works
Want to know how we come up with the numbers to rank the players, the below table should explain hopefully.
