2025 Austrian F1 Grand Prix Result Race Summary

Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Here’s where we capture the laps where stuff happened. We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football, but marginally more interesting.

Setting the scene A Lando Norris masterclass in qualifying sees him comfortably first – a result that never really looked in doubt. A few surprises down the grid sees Charles Leclerc split the McLarens in second, Piastri not helped by being caught behind Pierre Gasly as he spun late in Q3. Heroic performances from Liam Lawson (6th) and Gabirel Bortoleto (8th) which could see rare points and first points respectively. Max Verstappen in 7th and unhappy with his car, a long way back being on pole five times in a row at this track.

Race day is hot, which one would think would play into the hands of McLaren even more. This could be dull for those not totally into Lando Norris.

Carlos Sainz continues his unlucky 2025 as he is stuck on the grid as the field leaves for the Formation lap. This causes the first race start to be abandoned as the track marshals wait until the field are almost back to start the race before Sainz moves off the line.

Carlos Sainz goes to pitlane for his start, and not long after he stops there’s smoke and flames from the back of his car. Looks like the rear left brake is causing the issue. The fire is extinguished, much like Carlos Sainz’s hopes of a point today. He’s a DNF before the second start.

The start is delayed by ten minutes.

GRID (Starting Order) – NOR LEC PIA HAM RUS LAW VER BOR ANT GAS

Lap 1 – Lando Norris gets away well and he veers right to cover Charles Leclerc which opens up the first corner for his team mate Oscar Piastri who passes the Ferrari around the outside of turn one. Piastri evens shapes up to take Norris into turn three but thinks better of it. Not better was Kimi Antonelli who raced up the inside of turn three not quite under control and he runs into the side of Max Verstappen which also inconveniences Liam Lawson on the outside. Further ahead George Russell is annoying the Ferraris and almost passes Lewis Hamilton before the Safety Car is called.

ORDER – NOR PIA LEC HAM RUS GAS ALB BOR LAW ALO

SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED – RACE RESUMES LAP 4

Lap 4 – An incident free restart sees the order remain as was for the front half of the field, but that doesn’t stop George Russell trying his best on Lewis Hamilton around turn five and Franco Colapinto pushing Oliver Bearman wide on turn three.

Lap 6 – The McLarens seem to be cruising out in front, and then halfway around the lap Piastri makes an unexpected half a move on Norris into turn five. That’ll keep Norris on his toes now.

Lap 10 – McLaren radio confirms they are free to race and are doing just that. Oscar Piastri is maintaining the pressure and is all over Norris. Getting closer with each DRS.

Lap 11 – Lando Norris runs widish into turn one which gives Piastri an advantage in the race to turn three and Piastri dives past Norris for the lead. But Norris gets the switch back and retakes the lead going into turn five, not without Piastri trying to get past around the outside. The McLarens keep battling across the next few laps, with good, clean racing, as it should be. Unlike years of dedicated number 1-2 drivers or the hate fueled Verstappen-Hamilton battles.

ORDER – NOR PIA LEC HAM RUS BOR LAW ALO OCO STR

Lap 15 – Piastri has a look into turn one but pulls out of a move. He sniffs again at turns three and five but holds off with a big dive. But it is coming. And hopefully doesn’t end in tears. Proper quality racing here. DRS helping. The McLarens are five seconds ahead of Leclerc in third despite the close racing for context of their pace.

Lap 18 – While the McLarens are still just half a second apart, George Russell becomes the first front runner to pit.

Lap 20 – Oscar Piastri has a big moment. He makes a big dive, a lunge if you will, into turn five and locks up his brakes and almost runs into Lando Norris. With pit stops coming, Piastri was keen to get in front and get the priority first pit stop. That stays with Norris who pits at the end of the lap. Norris rejoins 4th behind the Ferraris. Over to Piastri now to find the pace to pass Norris.

Lap 23 – Oscar Piastri stays out for now, and his team is asking him whether he’d rather be 1.5 seconds behind or four seconds behind with fresher tyres. Piastri chooses four seconds, and we will see if that is wise later. Probably will be.

Lap 25 – Piastri pits from the lead and rejoins……5.6 seconds behind his team mate. Advantage Norris this time. Meanwhile the Ferraris lead, and Leclerc hands that over to Lewis Hamilton as Leclerc pits on lap 26. Hamilton pits a lap later.

Lap 28 – Lando Norris is doing it comfortably in front, with a lead of 6.5 seconds over Piastri. Radio from the team also warn Piastri that his dive at Norris before the pitstops was “too marginal”. Fair enough, it was only an inch or so from wiping them both out.

ORDER – NOR PIA LEC HAM LAW* ALO* RUS BOR HUL GAS — *Yet to Pit

Lap 31 – Yuki Tsunoda tsmashes into the side of Franco Colapinto into turn five. Colapinto did turn into the Red Bull. It is an end result that helps neither driver. Both will no doubt be sacked by season’s end. One of them probably earlier than that. Both drivers continue somehow.

Lap 35 – The gap between Norris and Piastri has reduced to 5.4 seconds but comfortably enough for Norris in the heat. Piastri might conclude that second is good enough for the Championship when it is one of those Norris days. Piastri is 14 seconds ahead of Leclerc in third and 20 seconds in front of Goerge Russell in fifth. Which sort of makes the McLaren one second a lap quicker than the Mercedes today.

Lap 40 – Piastri has trimmed the lead to 4.2 seconds now, and the McLarens are starting to come up to the traffic of midfield battles. Some of those midfield teams are starting to pit, making for some rare double points for Sauber as it stands.

ORDER – NOR PIA LEC HAM RUS BOR HUL OCO LAW ALO

Lap 45 – The lead at the front got as long as three seconds as the McLarens started dealing with traffic, but the gap has extended back out to 3.7 seconds as Norris retakes command of the race.

Lap 47 – Replays of Oscar Piastri running wide at turn on, killing whatever momentum he had gained.

Lap 51 – Pitstops for front runners Leclerc, Hamilton and Bortoleto who is doing a magnificent job in the Sauber. Lewis Hamilton doesn’t sound very happy with being made to pit against his wishes. Lawson and Alonso sit 5th and 6th and don’t look liek they will stop again.

Lap 53 – Lando Norris pits. Oscar Piastri leads. Let’s see how long Piastri can go on these tyres to give himself a chance for a late race charge. The answer is one further lap, as Piastri pits next lap.

Lap 54 – Piastri rejoins 3.3 seconds behind Norris but crucially behind a dicing pair of Colapinto and Tsunoda. It almost becomes super critical as Colapinto forces Piastri onto the grass as he tries to lap the Alpine. Piastri eventually gets past but probably not without a penalty for Colapinto. Tsunoda tsmartly gets out of the way quick. Piastri is back within 3.4 seconds of Norris a few laps later.

Lap 60 – The lead is down to 2.4 seconds at the front as the rest of the top ten has sorted itself out and happily that involves two Saubers, so first points coming for Bortoleto. Ten laps to go to sort this one out.

ORDER – NOR PIA LEC HAM RUS LAW ALO BOR HUL OCO

Lap 62 – The gap is now under two seconds and Norris is on the radio looking for pace. It might be traffic, it might be a determined Championship leader looking to steal a race win. Just eight laps now to find out.

Lap 67 – The gap has maintained at 1.9 seconds and it looks unlikely that Piastri will be able to do anything about Lando winning this weekend. But traffic lies ahead, and perhaps one final twist. The battle ahead is Bortoleto on Alonso for 7th. Interestingly that is manager v client off track. Bortoleto gets past but Alonso retakes him a few corners later. Great stuff.

Lap 69 – Lando Norris catches Bortoleto and passes him giving him just enough cushion to Piastri.

FINAL LAP – Lando Norris just about negotiates the lapping of Fernando Alonso but that does get a bit hairy. Not hairy enough for Piastri to get close enough to challenge, but a dominant 1-2 for them at the home of Red Bull. Ferrari confirm next best with 3rd and 4th. George Russell had an even more invisible a race than usual with 5th. And some feelgood points in the lower reaches of the top ten.

FINAL ORDER (Across the line) – NOR PIA LEC HAM RUS LAW ALO BOR HUL OCO

Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).

These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. 5 points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.

THE GREAT-EST – LANDO NORRIS

Oen of those great Lando weekends where he looks almost untouchable. Held off his team mate superbly in the early part of the race and reduced the Championship lead. And no doubt going into next weekend’s British Grand Prix on a huge high and the UK based Sky F1’s tongues ready.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

GABRIEL BORTOLETO – A Q3 appearance, and first points in the Kick Sauber. A very solid weekend.

LIAM LAWSON – Qualifies a fantastic sixth on the grid and ran in the top ten for most of the race. Slowly turning his season around. Must be smiling when he looks at Yuki Tsunoda’s current progress in the car he was dropped from.

OSCAR PIASTRI – Could have been one of those weekends where he lets himself get thrashed by Norris but he gave his team mate plenty of think about for now and future events in the Championship. Norris knows every race he’ll have to be at his best if he wants to steal the Championship.

SAUBER – Double points in a race for a team who scored once last season is real progress.

THE GRAPE-EST – MAX VERSTAPPEN

Pole sitter at Austria forever it feels, he struggled in qualifying to end up 7th, appearing unhappy with his car over radio and interviews, then is wiped out on the first lap by Kimi Antonelli. Meanwhile McLarens are cruising out front like he used to do.

DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS

KIMI ANTONELLI – First podium to first lap exit for the rookie Mercedes driver. A turn three special seen throughout all the junior races over the weekend, so not the only one, but unfortunate.

CARLOS SAINZ – Qualifies 19th, car doesn’t move with the rest of the grid when the race starts, when it does he has to start from pitlane, and then his car catches on fire. At least he didn’t qualify 20th.

YUKI TSUNODA – Knocked out in Q1 again, which sadly for Tsunoda is becoming less surprising. A clash with Colapinto while fighting over a lower midfield position ending in a clash and ten seconds worth of penalty for the Japanese driver. Tsunoda is challenging Perez for most ordinary results in a modern Red Bull car.

WILLIAMS – Yet another wasted weekend of potential fizzing out.

FRANCO COLAPINTO – Told by Flavio to score points, be fast and stay out of trouble to keep his drive. This race was a struggle on all three fronts. Nearly ended Piastri’s race when being lapped, which would have underlined an ordinary race.

LANCE STROLL – A Q1 exit vs Alonso’s Q3 effort. Point for Alonso vs second last on track in the race. Any other drivers would lose their drive. Most other drivers don’t have their boss and father doubling up.

Was it a good race, loads of action, a tense ending, a surprise result or DNF, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest?

We rate the big race itself, so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.

PRE RACE ACTION (FP, QUAL, SPRINT, OFF TRACK etc) –  2 / 5

A pretty quiet paddock, Practice sessions and Norris dominated qualifying made it all a bit low key. The F2 race saw a few good spills including a barrel roll in the F2 Sprint Race.

ON TRACK ACTION (RACE) – 8 / 10

A clumsy first corner clash box ticked for Austria. Although it did take out Max Verstappen which killed some of the race potential. But the battle up the front between the McLarens was top shelf, lasting for a good first third of the race.

ANY SURPRISES? – 4 / 5

Great performances for Sauber and Liam Lawson were welcome surprises for themselves and non-bitter neutrals. Max Verstappen being wiped out on the first lap was a shock.

SEASON IMPORTANCE – 4 / 5

A show of force by Norris ahead of his home race. But also an important race for McLaren’s promise of letting their drivers race. And they did, and did it cleanly.

ENDING –  2 / 5

A late race copy of the McLaren was threatening but never quite happened.

OVERALL RATING – 20 / 30

A great battle for the lead highlighted an enjoyable race, robbed of some what ifs with Max Verstappen’s early exit.

2025 nrl grand final ratings featured

Been too distracted by the cold weather snap? Maybe you’re disappointed in the Origin penalty count? Or been too busy booing your own team at half time?  Do you need some last-minute NRL tipping advice? Or simply want something else to blame when the tips go wrong? Either way, saddle up for The Gurgler’s NRL Round 17 Ratings and Late Mail.

In a new additional to our stable of NRL stats and tipping products, we have used all the stats we have, smashed them against each other like atoms, and come up with a H2H rating.

It includes this year’s form with a bias because it is this year, but we don’t forget historic stats of the H2H against this week’s opponents, and the ground and day the teams are playing on.

We’ve also applied an adjustment for each team’s increase or decrease in win % over the Origin period.

Then slice up the scores out of 100% between the two sides. The bigger the percentage, the more likely to win.

2025 NRL Round 17 Ratings

Here are the H2H ratings and winners for the first of the Origin affected rounds.

Our ratings picked 5/7 last weekend but was only available via social media.

The Ratings also includes the team’s relevant Origin period form.

2025 NRL Round 17 Late Mail

THU – PENRITH v BULLDOGS (CommBank)

After what seems months of mediocre clashes to being the week we have a real blockbuster to kick off Round 17. Penrith have some momentum after a stunning win minus Origin players last weekend in New Zealand, and the top teams looking over their shoulder with the Panthers now in the eight, especially with their five Origin starts returning. Although, not forgetting Bulldogs have a bunch of Origin stars to return as well.

Penrith have a great record v Bulldogs too winning seven straight v Bulldogs heading into this clash. Thursday seems to be a problem for both sides this season, Penrith have lost all three Thursday games this season, all three have been away games. Bulldogs are also winless from their two Thursday games in 2025, both against Qld sides – one at home. CommBank isn’t the best place for either team as well, Bulldogs are W2 L7 as the away side at CommBank Stadium. Penrith are W1 L3 as the home side. The historic H2H stats say Penrith, but it’s a different Bulldogs from recent years, and they are top of the competition with just two losses.

FRI – MANLY v WESTS TIGERS

If only this game was not on a Friday. Wests Tigers won the most recent game v Manly, but Manly have won the three most recent games at Brookvale v Wests Tigers, and average 45 points a game in that run. Manly aren’t sure if injuries, their coach or the DCE transfer saga that has seen their form drop recently. Moving Tom Trbojevic doesn’t seem like the answer either. Wests Tigers have a bigger fullback problem as there is out completely – Jahream Bula, replaced by Heath Mason, who obviously isn’t Bula. It does see Luai and Fainu line up at six and seven which looks the way forward for the Tigers, post Galvin. Manly will miss the firepower of Haumole Olakau’atu. As mentioned earlier Fridays are bad for the Tigers – they have lost 12 games in a row on a Friday. It’s also nine losses in a row away on a Friday for the Wests Tigers with a last win in July 2019.

FRI – NEWCASTLE v CANBERRA

Newcastle haven’t lost a first half since being booed off their ground at half time v Manly, so their good starts to recent games may be out of fear, especially back here at home. The Knights have also have won four of their last five v Canberra, so that helps. And they deserved their victory over the Dolphins last weekend, a team who had scored a million points in the three games leading into the match in Perth. But, Canberra are one of the form teams in the competition, as their second place on the ladder suggests, and Canberra have won six straight games away from home, plus won six straight games v Sydney/NSW teams on a Friday. Canberra have won all three games v Newcastle on a Friday, but all three of those games were in Canberra. Newcastle have lost four straight games on a Friday. Fletcher Sharpe is a big loss for Newcastle, but they are strengthened by the potential returns of Greg Marzhew, Jack Hetherington, Jacob Saifiti and Tyson Gamble. The game also features a match up of sons, one is the prodigal son Dominic Young and the other is an actual son Jed Stuart.

SAT – BRISBANE v WAHS

Hard to believe with all the doom and gloom about the Broncos that they are fifth on the ladder, although a loss (that looked likely at half time) would have had them outside the top eight, such is the tightness of the midfield pack. A player like Payne Haas makes all the difference for as long as he can carry the Broncos on his back. It was a rare loss for the Warriors last weekend against a weakened Penrith side, but worth noting that’s now two losses from two games straight after the bye for the Warriors, and on paper were served up a good opportunity to win. Things also going in the Warriors favour is their form away and v Queensland teams. Warriors have won four in a row away from home on a Saturday. Warriors have also won four in a row away on any day. Warriors have won all three games so far this season v Qld opposition. Warriors are also on a two game winning streak v Broncos. But Broncos have won five in a row at home on a Saturday v non-Sydney teams. Kurt Capewell is back in for the Warriors, which always makes a side better. Broncos have named Selwyn Cobbo on an extended bench, which seems like teasing given reports of their lowball half-price new contract offer.

SAT – ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA v PARRAMATTA (Win)

Saturday night is not all right for these lower ladder plodders, Dragons have won one of their last nine games on a Saturday. And one from their last five at Win Stadium on a Saturday, while Parramatta have lost four in a row away on a Saturday. Breaking that cycle though is Parramatta have won five straight v Dragons on a Saturday.  Parramatta have also won four straight v Dragons and 13 of their last 16. So advantage Eels on the H2H. Dylan Brown is the big name returning for Parramatta, while the Dragons welcome back Origin winner Valentine Holmes and former Origin winner Jaydn Su’A. Lachlan Ilias is named on an extended bench, but might have to change his name to Lachlan Flanagan to get a look in.

SAT – DOLPHINS v RABBITOHS

The Dolphins came crashing back to earth last weekend against Newcastle – a team they have now lost five in a row against. The Dolphins have had a little more success this season against Sydney teams and are 2/2 v Sydney teams at Suncorp Stadium this season. Dolphins also have a decent W7 L2 record v Sydney teams at Suncorp Stadium. So that helps. Souths have lost their last four Saturday games which doesn’t help, them. The Rabbitohs’ Saturday win rate of 20% is the second lowest in the comp, behind the Dragons, the Dolphins’ Saturday win rate isn’t much better at 40%. The Dolphins are W3 L2 at home at Suncorp Stadium on a Saturday. South Sydney sees Cody Walker return which will help, and lord know how many tries Alex Johnston will score with Walker reuniting with Latrell Mitchell. Maybe Johnston will break the all-time scoring record this weekend (he is six behind). Campbell Graham and Peter Mamouzelos returning also help the Of course at the end of the day it will probably all be about Wayne Bennett. It should be about Ray Stone. Always.

SUN – MELBOURNE v CRONULLA

Melbourne weren’t great last weekend, especially if you use the key metric of Craig Bellamy dummy spits. But they still won, which is why they always feature in September. Cronulla weren’t great in one half of last weekend’s game, and sadly for them it was the one that mattered for the final score. The win for Melbourne made it 3/3 for wins straight after the bye. Stats are against the Sharks here as Melbourne have won six of their last seven games v Cronulla at home. But a glimmer of hope and it is only 4/8 on a Sunday and just one of their last three v Sharks on a Sunday at home. To poop that party Melbourne have won all four home games this season v Sydney teams.

Interestingly, the Sharks last seven games on a Sunday have all been away. Xavier Coates is the big name to return this week for either side, which is likely to help Melbourne more than Cronulla.

SUN – GOLD COAST v NORTH QUEENSLAND

You get the feeling that Todd Payten is probably one more flogging away from the sack. Whilst that may sounds like a good night out in an Adult Entertainment venue, it doesn’t for the North Queensland coach. The Cowboys have been pretty woeful recently and have slid out of the eight accordingly. The Titans don’t usually have many great stats leading into any but, but the Gold Coast have won four of their last five v North Queensland at home, which is a pretty good one, for them. Also, Gold Coast have won their last four games at home to the Cowboys on a Sunday, and lead the all-time H2H record v Cowboys on a Sunday 6-2. Plus North Queensland have won just one of their last six games v Queensland teams. Their only win was against the Gold Coast. To counter that Gold Coast have lost all three games v Queensland teams this season. So form and stats going against the Cowboys, how about player ins and out? Origin stars Reuben Cotter and Reece Robson return. They may need more than that on current form. Cowboys have also named Marly Bitungane on an extended bench, and if he plays could be the first NRL player born in Tanzania, admitting ignorance about any other potential Tanzanian born NRL players. He’s averaging 100 run metres a game and six tries and line breaks this season for the Northern Pride, not bad for a prop.

F1 | The F1 Donkey Bold 2025 Austrian Grand Prix Predictions & Opinion

0
F1 Donkey Bold Predictions

Faster than an Aston Martin, more expendable than an Alpine driver, with tricks that he’s hiding from the FIA, and with more hope of getting out of Q1 than certain drivers, it’s the F1 Donkey with his unique view on F1 and more. Before each race The F1 Donkey puts the ass in sass and unloads his alternative, slightly unhinged thoughts on F1 including this week’s Bold 2025 Austrian Grand Prix Predictions and opinion.

The F1 Donkey’s Pre Austrian Grand Prix Thoughts

George Russell’s win at the Canadian Grand Prix was a fine reward for an excellent season so far for the Brit, and thankfully it also included some more shenanigans with Max Verstappen under the Safety Car at the end just to give the race a little something extra because of the Safety Car finish.

Although, if you’ve seen the footage, some of the Canadian F1 fans went all Bali-plane-ticket and fought amongst themselves in the crowd. It seemed to be a Mercedes and Ferrari fan facing off, one can only imagine how that argument started…”Geez, how shit is Lewis doing at Ferrari, I can’t believe he’s worse than he was last year at Mercedes”, or “George Russell is ten times better than Lewis”, or “Monaco isn’t really a country”, or “you’re as ugly as Fred Vasseur”. Either way none of them are very nice, and could easily lead to punching, albeit at least one of those statements is true.

Back to the on track fighting for now, and what Russell’s win didn’t include was his team re-signing him beyond this season, as the rumours are they are waiting for Max Verstappen. Which of course worked out really well last time for an F1 team trying to keep their options open – refer Renault/Alpine losing both Alonso and Piastri. But hey, they’ve got a Colapinto now. Well, for a while. Maybe.

Maybe Red Bull should step in and give F1 fans what they need and want, a new ultimate rivalry where both drivers seem to genuinely dislike each other, by keeping Max Verstappen and hiring George Russell.

Hiring Russell will come at a price, but that easily be recouped by a second driver in the team not being completely useless like the last two and a half seasons and earning more prize money. If Red Bull aren’t careful with the way things are going William will overtake them soon, with a driveable car and two capable drivers.

Unless the Red Bull powers that be have plans to ruin another couple of F1 careers by putting drivers with not experience and/or talent in the second Max Verstappen. It would seem especially cruel to fast track Lindblad’s F1 license so they can destroy his reputation before he’s legally able to drink in the USA. Maybe that’s Red Bull’s ploy is to hire as many younger drivers as possible, ruin them in F1 so no other team can develop their talent. Doesn’t seem like a very good idea, but I guess then you have to think about how the Red Bull drink itself probably wasn’t a good idea in the first place either, and now look at it. Drunk by millions around the world and main sponsors of sport where competitors can seriously hurt themselves. Maybe the whole Red Bull dynasty is built on pain and suffering. Which again, doesn’t sound like a good idea. But does explain why Christian Horner is still in charge of Red Bull F1, because he is very painful.

Not as painful as listening to Danica Patrick’s “insights” on the F1 coverage. But that’s what delayed recording viewing and the fast forward buttons are for.

Also, hiring Russell will also be cheaper than developing a car that would suit a second driver, given that no one other than Max Verstappen can drive it. Hiring a good, experienced driver at the top of their game might make the second car worthwhile. Either that or hold a F1’s Got Talent style competition, where budding F1 drivers can apply to drive in the Red Bull race simulator and they can identify which driver on earth has the same driving style as Max Verstappen. Seems simple and entertaining.

F1 needs a rivalry, as with new regulations coming in 2026 one car is always going to do it better than everyone else, and that can be quite dull. Especially if it’s Mercedes. So we need a rivalry to keep ourselves warm. And it appears that no one dislikes or needles each other more than Russell and Verstappen. The recent spats, and Safety Car shenanigans is just a taste of what that could be like, every week, for our amusement. That kind of rivalry would ensure that Sky F1 can stop sucking up Lando Norris’ behind for fewer minutes every weekend.

Word to the F1 broadcasters, most people want to see F1 car and F1 drivers. Not their Dad’s. Not really partners either. If you have to put a caption up of someone you’re showing in the pits or paddock it’s a fair assumption that Grand Prix won’t care that they’re there.

Although, word on the street is that Mercedes are going to be the quickest next season, so maybe Mercedes should hire Russell and Verstappen themselves, and we can have a classic Prost-Senna rivalry for the ages.

That would leave the unlucky Antonelli out of a seat, but given how badly Lewis Hamilton is going at Ferrari, and how cheap Antonelli would be, that’s all sorted. Ticking some Italian boxes there. Not that Ferrari need to be more Italian, but it would be fun.

The beauty of Verstappen at Red Bull is without him no one would be able to drive a Red Bull, which would make them look bad, and that would lead to Christian Horner being fired. Which isn’t a bad end result. And could make Helmut Marko less relevant. Another good by product.

But all that’s in the future, or at least decided before the summer break. This weekend sees the oversized go kart track that is the Austrian Grand Prix, and like most go kart tracks it is usually quite entertaining. Not as entertaining as Mario Kart. But what is.

What isn’t, are this week’s Bold Predictions.

The NRL Donkey’s Bold 2025 Austrian Grand Prix Predictions

And here they are, in a convenient team by team format, so you can ignore them all at your convenience or peril. Depending on the outcome of our prediction.

McLAREN

A strangely off weekend for McLaren which sees them give Championship hopes to their rivals.

RED BULL

Max Verstappen pole. Max Verstappen win.

MERCEDES

Front row start for Kimi. Podium for George.

FERRARI

A dog’s breakfast race with only one car making Q3 and one car making the finish. Maybe it’s Fred’s last race before the next lamb is led in.

WILLIAMS

Alex Albon to shine up to qualifying, Carlos Sainz is never quite that lucky and misses out on Q3 by 0.003.

ALPINE

Colapinto is a first lap casualty for sure. Pierre Gasly gets a mechanical fault out of sympathy.

RB

Top four qualifying for Isack Hadjar. Top three scowl from Liam Lawson.

ASTON MARTIN

It’s so easy to pick Q1 exit for Lance Stroll, so I will. He’s due a petulant first lap tangle that is not his fault of course too.

HAAS

This has first / second / third exit written all over it for Oliver Bearman.

SAUBER

Q3 and points heroics from Nico Hulkenberg.

NRL | The NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Round 17 Expert Tips and Opinion

2
NRL 2026 Season Predictions

Angrier than a room full of Fox League writers, more biased than your club’s most hated referee, and ducking for cover like a Melbourne Storm Assistant Coach, it’s time for the weekly Rugby League rant of The Gurgler’s NRL Donkey, who provides his NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Round 17 Expert Tips as well as offers an alternative, slightly unhinged view full of sass of the world of rugby league and beyond for another week.

The NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Round 17 Weekly Rant

As the world waits for the fallout of the US air strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities (no pun intended) it does make me wonder if those bunker busting planes could be put to good use in rugby league.

Because there’s a very dangerous site that threatens the Australian way of life and enjoyment of rugby league, that’s worse than 12 Irans – The NRL Bunker.

Hearing the term Bunker Buster did get me quite excited, and despite the fact the NRL Bunker isn’t 90 metres or whatever below ground, and that the use of the Bunker Buster bombs would be totally disproportionate, I’d still be keen to get rid of one of the world’s most dangerous weapons.

The Allies invaded Iraq for less but at least came up with the catchy phrase of Weapons of Mass Destruction.

So about I come up with the term Weapon of Mass Obstruction for the NRL Bunker.

Maybe though we don’t need to send in the US planes with Bunket Busters to destroy the NRL Bunker, perhaps just let Craig Bellamy watch his team play in side the Bunker and let nature take its course.

p.s., the sooner Fox League get a Red Button alternative coverage from inside the Melbourne coaches box the better. Do it, and do it now.

Not that the NRL Bunker did anything disastrously wrong this weekend, but Saddam Hussein wasn’t the super evil villain every day either, and while President Trump is in the mood you have to take advantage.

Although, I must stress the need to ensure that no humans are inside at the time, just the technology.

Because if we don’t perhaps AI takes over the human element anyway in the NRL Bunker, and we end up with a situation like the Terminator, and robots would become referees and video referees and slowly ruin the game until a nude Arnie falls out of the sky to save the day.

Rugby league and nudity do go hand in hand, so maybe that could work. And where’s there’s sporting nudity, Greg Norman usually isn’t too far away. This website does love a semi-nude Greg Norman (if you haven’t seen the Comic series) and features him probably too much for most religions, except I presume Buddhism, as Greg Norman has landed a plush job as a Vietnam Tourism ambassador.

Imagine that campaign. Sunsets, Culture, shirtless Greg Norman and a sunset. Boxes well and truly ticked. Maybe Vietnam will become the Joneses new destination of choice. There’s probably not enough plane punching to persuade the Bali travel crowd, but maybe Vietnam doesn’t want them there anyway.

Talking of semi-nude and not being wanted, what a delight that Ashley Klein appears to be named as the Origin III referee. Whilst this website recommends and agrees with Pick and Stick at Origin level, except in the case of DCE, Captain Plod, and anyone too good for NSW, which is most of the side, surely Askley Klown’s efforts in Origin II would see him take the DCE path.

Maybe that’s harsh, how about basing his omission based on a back catalogue of arrogantly controlled poor performances over recent seasons and beyond.

So if State of Origin teams are mostly picked on form, how can Klein be the referee named. I’ve never wanted an Origin Bolter more in my life.

And I’m a Queenslander.

I just want a referee whose name I can’t remember the next day because he had no impact on the game.

Talking of impact, here are this week’s NRL Round 17 Expert tips.

The NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Round 17 Expert Tips

THU – PENRITH v BULLDOGS (CommBank)

Dear NRL,

This is how you start a round of NRL.

What a game though. Champs v Challengers. Determining whether the Bulldogs are contenders or pretenders. Determining whether the Panthers are back or not. So many questions. Answers coming.

Dear Whingescreens O’Brien,

Looks like your fans do know rugby league after all. In fact, you could argue their booing or the return of some key backs has had more to do with the turnaround in form than you.

Please don’t choke. Rugby League needs a top four Warriors team.

F1 2023 - Fabi Preview Index Feature Image

The Gurgler does like to use some obscure drivers in our Race previews and report, so who better to use than Teo Fabi to determine a race rating system.

So before each race we give a rating out of ten for four key category that are loosely based on each letter of Teo Fabi’s surname. Don’t know who Teo Fabi is, you should.

FAST? 7 / 10 – It feels like an oversized go kart track, so probably seems faster than it really is, but there are some cool, fast corners, that sometimes split ambition and talent. Especially the last two.

ACTION? 9 / 10 – It’s a track where stuff usually happens. Last season saw a late race tangle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Oscar Piastri would order one of those this season. Watch for qualifying where the really short lap will cause chaos.

BIG HISTORY? – 7 / 10 – The Austrian GP race event dates back to the 1970’s on a much larger, and stupidly faster circuit where the current one sits, but was dumped after the race had to be red flagged twice due to startline accidents. It also provided this author with their first memory of F1 when Andrea de Cesaris barrel-rolled his blue Ligier on one of the banks off the track. The race has had two stints at the current track, and has had its share of memorable moments.

INCLEMENT WEATHER? – 3 /10  The Weather Channel says there’s very little chance of rain but the temperatures look like they will be in the low 30’s, which could prove interesting for tyre wear, driver fatigue, and general grumpiness.

RACE POTENTIAL RATING 65%It’s Monaco, and even if it is dull with no overtaking and a bore fest of fuel and tyre saving, it’s still Monaco.

Want to know if your favourite driver for this weekend is a master of the track or the track is a master of them? Here then are some barely interesting facts and stats.

Stats include the Styrian GPs which doubled up due to Covid.

  • It’s five pole positions in a row for Max Verstappen.
  • The race has been won by a driver starting in 7th on the grid.
  • Pole sitter has won nine times and finished second five times, with three results outside the top two.
  • Every current driver has finished at least one race outside of the points or DNFd.
  • Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have never missed Q3 here.
