2025 NRL Round 27 Results Best Stats

BRISBANE STATS BREAKER

Brisbane have now won the two most recent clashes with Melbourne on a Friday at Suncorp Stadium in 2023. But the win was also only the second win in their last 19 games v Melbourne going back to 2017 and Broncos’ second win from their last 16 games at Suncorp Stadium v Melbourne going back to 2011. An obscure stat is that Melbourne have now lost both of their games at Suncorp Stadium this season v Qld sides.

THE 0% CLUB

The Rabbitohs have never beaten the Roosters on a Friday at Allianz Stadium (10 games).

Newcastle have lost all nine games this season on a Sunday.

The following teams also failed to win on various days – Manly, North Qld, Parramatta and Roosters (Thursday). Gold Coast (Sunday). Wests Tigers (Friday and Sunday).

Newcastle have never beaten Parramatta at CommBank Stadium either. (3 games).

Newcastle failed to win a game post Origin, while Souths failed to win a game during Origin period.

Gold Coast never beat a Qld side this season. Brisbane never lost against one.

NRL LADDER POST ORIGIN

We have a revised NRL ladder from after the State of Origin finished until the completion of the regular season, to see if there have been any wild form swings. The answer is not really overall, as seven of the top eight are in the top eight of the Post Origin ladder. It does highlight the mini fall of the Warriors, whose late season dip punishment is Penrith first week of the finals.

Cronulla’s late season progress has been far less noisy than the Broncos, but does keep them flying under the radar. Their reward is a tough game v Roosters in week one of the finals.

Newcastle’s 0-8 to finish the season helps them earn the wooden spoon for 2025, averaging just under 42 points conceded per game in that run.

EVERYDAY NEWS – The Surprise Spin-off Success

0

A spin-off show from a long-running drama has been a surprise success.

Peter Wood (Clinton Edwards) and Sarah Berry (Emma Yarrow) were two of the most popular characters from the action-crime drama Fire Force, which ended last year after 10 seasons.

Known for their quirky humour and easy chemistry on the show, the characters were a good fit for a spin-off, and season one of Peter and Sarah has been a hit.

As a reviewer from PopKulchaWatch wrote in their season one summary, “The season took a while to find its feet: the first few episodes were full of forced, awkward humour, nostalgic Fire Force cameos, and formulaic ‘case of the week’ plots. But the quality improved once Emma and Clinton grew into the new show (and the writers stopped with the Force fan service) and it became an enjoyable drama with some light comedy moments. The plots were still predictable at times, but that’s forgivable and can be worked on for season two.”

It helped that Emma and Clinton have been real-life friends for 15 years, meeting at drama school in 2010, briefly dating in the early years of Fire Force, and are godparents to each other’s children.

“We love working together. Clint is a wonderful dramatic and comedic actor and I was honoured that we got to continue Sarah and Peter’s journey in a new show,” said Emma.

“Emma’s wonderful. She has a quirky and playful side, but can also switch on and nail serious moments. She’s a joy to work with and I hope we have a long run on our new show,” said Clinton.

Been too distracted by how many players aren’t playing this weekend? Do you need some last-minute NRL tipping advice? Or simply want something else to blame when the tips go wrong? Either way, saddle up for The Gurgler’s NRL Round 27 Ratings and Late Mail.

In a new additional to our stable of NRL stats and tipping products, we have used all the stats we have, smashed them against each other like atoms, and come up with a H2H rating.

It includes this year’s form with a bias because it is this year, but we don’t forget historic stats of the H2H against this week’s opponents, and the ground and day the teams are playing on, plus their record v top and lower half teams.

Then slice up the scores out of 100% between the two sides. The bigger the percentage, the more likely to win.

2025 NRL Round 27 Ratings

Here are the H2H ratings and winners for the second last weekend of the regular season.

NRL Round 27 Ratings

2025 NRL Round 27 Late Mail

THU – BRISBANE v MELBOURNE

In a big week where the Broncos need to win to guarantee themselves a top four place and a double chance against a side who they have a poor record against, you’d think the players would pull their heads in. Instead you see footage of Reece Walsh drinking out of toilet and Gehamat Shibasaki drinking too much in general and being dropped. Shibasaki will be missed as much as moving Deine Mariner into the centres and bringing Jess Arthars onto the win is a solid replacement.

After resting players didn’t quite work out last weekend for Melbourne in their 40 point second half pantsing by the Roosters, they are only resting Stefano Utoikamanu and Shawn Blore is out injured. A big in is Jahrome Hughes, plus the returns of Xavier Coates, Eli Katoa, Nick Meaney and Josh King should see them back to full power.

Talking of full power, the stats are certainly on the Storm’s side. Broncos have won just one of their last 18 games v Melbourne going back to 2017. Broncos have won only one of their last 15 games at Suncorp Stadium v Melbourne going back to 2011. Brisbane have won the most recent clash with Melbourne on a Friday at Suncorp Stadium in 2023. Overall it’s W2 L10. It’s W4 L21 on a Friday v Melbourne anywhere. Overall Melbourne are W11 L3 at Suncorp Stadium on a Friday.

FRI – MANLY v WARRIORS

Manly need to win big with a bunch of other things to happen to make the finals, but facing the Warriors isn’t a bad thing. Manly have won three in a row at Brookvale v Warriors. Manly have only lost two of their last 13 at Brookvale v Warriors going back to 2010. Friday form is a bit scratchy for both, Manly have won only one of five Friday games this season but won the only home game. Warriors have lost three in a row away on a Friday. Worth noting though – Warriors are W4 L1 away to Sydney teams this season.

Manly are looking long term this weekend by bringing in Joey Walsh as the number 14 for a run in the halves at some stage. The Sea Eagles lose some speed with Tolu Koula out injured. The Warriors have lost Wayde Egan through a hip injury. If the Broncos lose like usual against Melbourne, a win here for the Warriors would put them in fourth and place pressure on the other team chasing top four Cronulla ahead of their hard game v Bulldogs.

FRI – ROOSTERS v SOUTH SYDNEY

What better time for a clash between Roosters and Rabbitohs than the last week of the regular season, where the Rabbitohs can spoil the Roosters finals chances. So despite being out of finals contention, you’d be certain they would enjoy keeping the Roosters out of the finals as well. Plus there’s Alex Johnston, who is three tries short of the try scoring record. So more to play for than you’d think normally. That, and it is a proper rivalry.

Stats favour the Roosters, Roosters have won four of their last five games v South Sydney at Allianz Stadium. Roosters have never been beaten by the Rabbitohs on a Friday at Allianz Stadium (9 games). Roosters have won 11 of their last 12 at Allianz Stadium v any team on a Friday. Roosters have won 15 of their last 16 at Allianz Stadium v any team on a Friday v Sydney. And Souths have lost six in a row away on a Friday. But Souths have won their last three games, and are playing ok. Not quite as good as the Roosters second half v Melbourne, but good enough ahead of this game.

Souths have some big name players back too, with Cameron Murray making his return from long-term injury and Jack Wighton returning from suspension. A shame there’s no Latrell Mitchell, as he’d love this kind of game. For the Roosters Sam Walker returns from concussion replacing Sandon Smith.

SAT – ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA v PENRITH (Win Stadium)

Bit of a low key match this one, with the Dragons unable to make the finals and Penrith either going to finish seventh or eighth. Both will work for them. The recent H2H works for Penrith too, having won seven of the last eight games v Dragons.

Penrith’s band of rested players return for this clash, which should see them being too good. Only Liam Martin and Brian To’o are sitting out for a second week. The Dragons are unchanged so continuity is on their side.

SAT – GOLD COAST v WESTS TIGERS

Gold Coast need to win to avoid last, and this week’s opponent does help. Wests Tigers are the only team where the Gold Coast Titans have a >50% win percentage against (61%). Plus Gold Coast have won three straight home games v Wests Tigers. The general form at home and on Saturdays for the Gold Coast gets pretty ordinary after that though, Gold Coast are W1 L4 at home on a Saturday this season and Gold Coast are W2 L7 anywhere on a Saturday this season. No better for the Wests Tigers though, Wests Tigers have won one of their last 13 away games on a Saturday but at least that win was in Queensland v Dolphins. Wests Tigers have won just one of their eight away games v Qld sides since 2023.

Keano Kini returns for the Titans and is selected at fullback which means AJ Brimson moves to the centres. It’s all new in the centres with rugby convert Carter Gordon named. In other exciting new player news son of PNG legend Marcus Bai – Cooper Bai – is selected in the number 14 role. For the Tigers big player news Jeral Skelton is out while Alex Seyfarth returns from suspension.

SAT – BULLDOGS v CRONULLA (Olympic Stadium)

A game Cronulla may, or may not need to win to finish in the top four. If they win and Broncos and Warriors lose they are fourth. If they match results, Cronulla need to do it better by 66 points. So yeah, they need to win. Bulldogs are a tough opponent recently, Bulldogs have won two in a row v Cronulla. But prior to that Cronulla had won six in a row. Saturdays favour the Bulldogs – Bulldogs have won all six Saturday games this season. As does the top eight battles form. Bulldogs win % v current top eight is 50% this season, Cronulla’s is 22%. Bulldogs win rate v current top eight sides at home is 75%, Cronulla’s away win % v current top eight sides in 2025 is 0%.

Despite being safe in third place, the Bulldogs have avoided huge resting. Jacob Kiraz is out injured. Viliame Kikau returns in a boost. Jesse Ramien is a good inclusion for the Sharks.

SUN – DOLPHINS v CANBERRA (Dolphin Oval)

Canberra won the minor premiership last weekend and so have done the Dolphins a favour by resting ten players for this weekend’s clash in Redcliffe.  Kaeo Weekes, Jed Stuart, Ethan Strange, Jamal Fogarty, Joe Tapine, Tom Starling, Simi Sasagi, Josh Papalii and Zac Hosking are all out, so the Raiders will have a completely changed spine for this weekend. Among new combinations everywhere else. Dolphins have Kulikefu Finefuiaki returning and word on the street is Herbie Farnworth will play if the Dolphins’ finals chances are still alive.

Stats favour a full strength Canberra. Dolphins won the first game v Canberra but have lost three in a row since. Canberra lost their first two away games this season but have won eight of their last nine since. Canberra are W4 L1 away on a Sunday this season. Although Dolphins have won their last two home games on a Sunday. The game being at Redcliffe, the proper home of the Dolphins, and their record there is patchy. It’s W1 L1 at Redcliffe on a Sunday for the Dolphins. It’s W4 L3 at Redcliffe on any day for the Dolphins. The teams share a win at the ground in previous clashes.

SUN – PARRAMATTA v NEWCASTLE

Parramatta have found some late season form, moving away from last. Going in the other direction is Newcastle with a run of eight straight losses, and one more (and a Titans win earlier in the weekend) could see them finish dead last for 2025. Stats don’t help them either. Parramatta have won seven of their last eight v Newcastle. Parramatta have won the only two games at CommBank Stadium v Newcastle. Worse still, Newcastle have lost all eight games this season on a Sunday.

Team news sees Dylan Brown moving back to five eighth, as a preview for the Knights when he moves there. Newcastle are unchanged, but maybe that’s because the coach has been axed for 2026, although we’re sure he’d rather win and avoid last.

Here are The Gurgler’s 2025 Dutch Grand Prix Ratings – our way of rating the performances on the track without injuring our wrist or running up the back of our team mate’s car.

Our G-Power Rankings goes a little bit deeper than just points scored on the Sunday and has a slightly cooler name than most. We take on board Free Practice, Qualifying, performance in relation to teammate, fastest lap, and a few more stats that are attempting to highlight a driver outperforming the car and/or thrashing their teammate.

Normally we have a season long bunch of stats, but we’re saving that for the end of season review that will be way too long for anyone to want to read. Regardless, here is our shortened version for contractual obligations.

NRL | The NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Round 27 Expert Tips and Opinion

0
NRL 2026 Season Predictions

Angrier than a room full of Fox League writers, more of an obstruction than an NRL trainer, ducking for cover like a Melbourne Storm Assistant Coach, resting more players than any NRL club,  drinking out of more toilets than any Bronco star could ever hope for, wondering what he’s done wrong not to be a current NRL mascot, playing out of position for the good of the team, and getting the full support of the board, it’s time for the weekly Rugby League rant of The Gurgler’s NRL Donkey, who provides his NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Round 27 Expert Tips as well as offers an alternative, slightly unhinged view full of sass of the world of rugby league and beyond for another week.

The NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Round 27 Weekly Rant

So the 2025 regular season is going out with little more than a whimper, or a meh, or even a cheer at the enthusiasm levels of year five students at 2pm when the deputy principal walks in the room to talk about feelings, there’s more talk about what teams aren’t going to do than what they are going to do.

There’s not even a spoon bowl this season, and there should be one every, so you’ll have to settle for Gold Coast winning on Saturday, needing Newcastle in the last game of the season needing to win to avoid splinters.

OK, sure position eight is up for grabs, although the Roosters are in the driving seat and there’s plenty of things that need to happen to kick them out of the car/Tarago. I wondered why they called the Tarago the Tarago, and according to Wikipedia, and why would I go anywhere else, definitely not Grok although that is good for AI Greg Norman, it is named after a town in NSW, which is near Canberra, and convenient for this week’s theme.

The Dolphins need the Roosters to lose to the Rabbitohs, Alex Johnston to score three tries and claim the all-time try scoring record, Canberra to rest between 5-8 first grade players, win by more than whatever the points difference will be if the Roosters lose in the first place, and for Manly not to win 100.

Manly, the other team in contention for finals, need both the Roosters and Dolphins to lose, they need to win by at least 50 points while the Roosters lose by 33 or more, Alex Johnston to score three tries and claim the all-time try scoring record, to concede no more than six penalties, kick one 40-20, hope there’s no more than 10mm of rain in the week leading up to the game, resolve one major conflict somewhere in the world, have five of more players being able to do the bottle flip challenge during the final training session, correctly bet on the outcome of a 500 metre race between and cheetah and a leopard, design an alternative NRL trophy using only items from player’s recycling bins from last week and beat the Newcastle Knights NRLW team in a Great Australian BakeOff Challenge judged by former NRL referee Eddie Ward and Moghseen Jadwat.

The Dolphins of course could have sorted this problem by now by beating the other two teams in the last month but saved their worst football for those crucial games. But they appear to like doing things the hard way. Making their finals chances Stayin’ Alive, which is apt given the Bee Gees tribute in Redcliffe.

There’s also the battle for fourth place, which could go to any team, but would be best if the Warriors hung on. One because it would be great for rugby league to have a sell out NRL Finals game in Auckland, and two that Channel Nein would have to send their cameras over there to cover it.

But who knows which teams will be resting players and how many this week. Given that Canberra need to rest their first grade players and they are still in the NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg finals, maybe they shouldn’t send anyone and simply forfeit the game for the good of their club and the Dolphins. Although, given that would deprive Ray Stone of the opportunity to smash people in the hardest of hard tackles, I wouldn’t be doing that. Unless you want him to come around to your place and tackle you. That’s actually not a bad idea. Like the old Gorilla-gram back in the day. You can order Ray Stone to come to your place, or someone else and greet you with a low and hard tackle. Ray Stone being the professional will simply get up and go to the next job.

After Penrith set the NRL resting players pisstake record last weekend with 85, other NRL teams will be thankful the new bar was set so high.

You can’t blame Penrith for doing what they need to do to win a title. If they win a title then it’s more than justified, not that they need our box ticking.

But it does bring the NRL into question. Why do Penrith feel the need to rest so many players? Too many games? A State of Origin series that tires players and ruins the NRL for months? Stupid turnarounds to New Zealand a few days after a game in Perth? Games in Las Vegas?

The end result is essentially between the teams who have to play in Las Vegas and recover, and the other teams who have to wait a week for the Las Vegas games to happen, early season rustiness, players being taken out of club teams to go into Origin camp, players being rested after State of Origin because they schedule a game less than 48 hours after the Origin match is finished, ridiculous five and six game rounds of NRL which usually feature loads of rested players from Origin, plus throw in the new trend of resting players with three or less rounds of the season to go and you are getting to the why bother stage for half a season where there’s only 8-10 proper rounds of the NRL.

So currently more is less, and until they sort out State of Origin it won’t change and the NRL and the fans, but not the broadcasters as it’s those greedy buggers why we’re in this scenario, will have to suffer. Maybe not suffering like a Gold Coast Titans supporter but close enough.

The NRL Donkey’s 2025 NRL Round 27 Expert Tips

THU – BRISBANE v MELBOURNE

The Storm average one loss every five years against the Broncos, so best of luck winning that game to grab the final top four spot. If they win it’ll be toilet water for everyone.

Melbourne by 12

FRI – MANLY v WARRIORS

For selfish reasons I’d like Manly to lose. For rugby league reasons I’d like the Warriors to win.

Warriors by 8

FRI – ROOSTERS v SOUTH SYDNEY

This game needs three things. A Rabbitohs win, an Alex Johnston hat trick, and a pitch invasion to rival one of the promotion parties in the lower divisions of English football.

Rabbitohs by 6

SAT – ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA v PENRITH (Win Stadium)

Rumours that Dragons coach has lost the change room. Maybe all he has to do is fill it full of the Fox League disciples that raise his almighty achievements. As for Penrith, I’d like to see them give this game and the NRL the middle finger and try and break their resting record from last weekend.

Penrith by 2

SAT – GOLD COAST v WESTS TIGERS

The Gold Coast can still avoid the wooden spoon if they beat the Wests Tigers. Given Newcastle’s awful form of late and on Sundays this season, and Parramatta’s recent turnaround, a Titans win should take care of it.

Gold Coast by 2

SAT – BULLDOGS v CRONULLA (Olympic Stadium)

How the hell have Cronulla snuck into contention for a top four spot. Hopefully the Bulldogs win, no one wants the Sharks to have a double chance.

Bulldogs by 14

SUN – DOLPHINS v CANBERRA (Dolphin Oval)

This could be the game of the round, if the previous game of the round result goes the right way. Either way Canberra will probably rest an RSL minibus of players, so the Dolphins can at least end their season with either a huge 60 point victory win fest or just enough. Either will work.

Dolphins by just enough

SUN – PARRAMATTA v NEWCASTLE

If this game was played in a forest and fell over would anyone hear?

Parramatta by 26

2025 Dutch F1 Grand Prix Result Race Summary

Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Here’s where we capture the laps where stuff happened. We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football, but marginally more interesting.

Setting the scene It’s a pure McLaren weekend through Friday and Saturday with Lando Norris dominating by just a little of his team mate in every session up to Q2. But come Q3 qualifying Oscar Piastri gets the slightly faster lap in during the first runs in Q3 and it is enough for pole position. The word is that strategy could be halfway between one or two stops, so Lando could do a Hungary again. Further back Max Verstappen is third and close enough to get in front by turn one and let the narrow track decide the winner, so he can’t be excluded from winning. Both Red Bulls are starting on soft tyres in a neat strategy gamble. Izack Hadjar did a brilliant job to end Qualifying in fourth, Liam Lawson not too bad either in eighth. Ferraris were underwhelming as was Kimi Antonelli in 11th. George Russell was solid enough as ever in fifth. And there’s a chance of rain, early.

GRID (Starting Order) – PIA NOR VER HAD RUS LEC HAM LAW SAI ALO

Lap 1 – Oscar Piastri makes a good enough start on the outside of the pit straight and chops across Lando Norris a little to get to the inside run and get away from Max Verstappen who blasts around the outside of turn one and gets in front of Lando Norris. Going into turn three Max nearly drops it and spins but recovers quickly and stays ahead of Norris. Perfect for Piastri to have Verstappen in between him and his team mate on such a narrow track. Hadjar holds onto fourth and Charles Leclerc gets past George Russell for fifth. Other movers were Alex Albon in 10th and Yuki Tsunoda for a change in 11th. Lando Norris is backing off a touch, maybe getting ready for alternative strategy already. Doubt it’s lack of speed given Norris’ efforts all weekend.

ORDER – PIA VER NOR HAD LEC RUS HAM LAW SAI ALB

Lap 3 – The cars thin out a little and little gaps appear. Lando Norris has closed in a little to Verstappen. But it already has that feeling of a race that will need water to be exciting. Although Australians would prefer it dry as it stands.

Lap 6 – Piastri is now three seconds in front of Verstappen, building a little lead in case of rain. Radio says it will be light rain but last for seven to ten laps. It’s 1.2 seconds from Verstappen to Norris, and around a second down through the field. Not much change at all down the field after lap one.

Lap 8 – Oscar Piastri sets fastest lap as he powers ahead and extends the gap in front. It’s getting Norris into the mood for passing Verstappen, he’s within half a second.

Lap 9 – Lando Norris doesn’t waste much time on Max Verstappen. Nails him under braking around the outside of turn one and powers off into the distance to chase his team mate. Max didn’t put up too might of a fight. The gap ahead to Piastri is just over four seconds.

Lap 12 – Lando Norris sets fastest laps and the gap to the front is 3.8 seconds, as ever this weekend, Norris is the fastest McLaren driver. Despite the rain forecasted, Aston Martin make an executive decision and bring in Lance Stroll for tyres and he gets the Hard compound. Maybe Aston Martin don’t want him for 2026.

Lap 16 – The gap between the race leading McLarens is down to 3.1 seconds, so Norris doing a very good job, but Piastri managing it for now. Just like Izack Hadjar is managing to hold onto fourth from Charles Leclerc and is in fact catching Max Verstappen. Max has dropped back by nine seconds from Norris since being overtaken and is only two seconds ahead of Hadjar now.

ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD LEC RUS HAM LAW SAI ALB

Lap 20 – Rain is here. Seems light so far, but who knows. It starts off a chain of pit stops – Alonso, Tsunoda, Hulkenberg and Colapinto. It’s more than 50 laps to go if they want to do the rest of the race on the new hard tyres.

Lap 23 – Lewis Hamilton, driving quite the obscure race in 7th discusses pit stop strategy and the undercut of the car in front. Instead of pitting Hamilton they pit Leclerc. A few seconds later there’s the footage of Hamilton’s broken Ferrari into the wall on the outside of turn three.

SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED

McLaren aren’t too far away from the pit lane when the Safety Car is called so they come in and double stack. Norris’ pit stop is a little long, as he baulks after the jack man at the front takes a little too long getting out of the way. Everyone is OK. But nothing lost on track as they are miles ahead of the other cars. Those other cars all pit except for Leclerc who did the lap before and has now been inconvenienced dropping from fifth to sixth.

ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD RUS LEC LAW SAI OCO ALB

SAFETY CAR EXITS

Lap 27 – Oscar Piastri zooms away nice and early and gets a comfortable gap on Norris. Further back Russell pressures Hadjar unsuccessfully and the Racing Bull keeps fourth. The other Racing Bull of Lawson dices with Sainz, and that was unsuccessful for both as they touch and both cars start slowing, presuming there’s damage. Two good races ruined. Looks like more Lawson’s fault than Sainz as the Williams was attempting a pass on the outside and Lawson just cut him off. Their battle continues after the pit stops to fix tyres and cars.

Max Verstappen – on medium tyres compared to McLaren’s hard tyres – is looking a little racey behind Norris.

ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD RUS LEC ALB ANT STR OCO

Lap 30 – Oscar Piastri has extended his lead out to two seconds, keeping away from the dreaded DRS. Verstappen’s progress has slowed and is 1.7 seconds behind Norris in third.

Lap 31 VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED

Bit of Carlos Sainz’s Williams need to be picked up, so the cars are slowed for the time being. Meanwhile, McLaren are discussing going to the end of the current set of tyres. Worked in Hungary so why not here. Wonder if Piastri is thinking the same thing or if that strategy is only open to the favourite son.

Lap 32 RACES RESUMES

Mega move from Charles Leclerc on George Russell for fifth. They race each other the next lap with the Ferrari just staying ahead. Quality racing. Goerge Russell complains as per usual, but he might be right about Leclerc, as the complaint was about Leclerc being off the track, and the Ferrari certainly had a lot of car in the gravel trap when he dived past.

Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz is blamed for the Lawson clash and gets a ten second penalty. Carlos Sainz only has one kind of luck in 2025 – bad.

ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD LEC RUS ANY ALB STR OCO

Lap 35 – After some action in the upper midfield, time to check on the gap in front. It’s 1.5 second to Piastri but closing. Advice from the team, is to go and attack his team mate and pass on track.

Lap 41 – Oscar Piastri holding on in the lead, with a 1.3 second gap to Lando Norris. Max Verstappen is over six seconds further back, so a bronze medal at best it looks like so far.

Lap 46 – Much like an accordion, but slightly more interesting is the gap between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. It goes out and in between 1.0 and 1.5 seconds.

Lap 51 – That McLaren gap is hanging around the 1.5 second mark at the moment. Fernando Alonso, who was grumpy about his tyres not long ago is making his moves against the lower midfield. Hopefully he can get to the points by race end or try his best. He’s up to 15th.

Lap 53 – Kimi Antonelli pits for new tyres, and spooked by this Ferrari pit Leclerc for new tyres. Charles Leclerc gets out just in front of the Mercedes of Antonelli but the youngster has a good run at the Ferrari and he attempts to get past Leclerc into the banked turn three, but gets it wrong, understeers and clips the Ferrari and puts Leclerc into the wall, which destroys the front of the car and right front tyre and suspension. Leclerc is out, Antonelli pits for damage, but will get a penalty for sure. Worse for Leclerc, he says that his pit stop was unnecessary according to Sky F1’s Bernie Collins, who is actually good.

SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED

Both McLarens pit for new tyres with a double stack again. Bot have slow stops but it doesn’t matters as Max Verstappen pits again. Most pit really. McLaren are on hard tyres, 3rd to 7th are on softs, with the midfield behind that a mixture of soft, medium and hard.

ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD RUS ALB ANT GAS ALO BOR

Winners are Gasly who hadn’t pit until then and Alonso and Bortoleto who got an easier ride into the points. Alex Albon too is benefitting from others pain, usually and again today, his team mate’s bad luck.

SAFETY CAR EXITS

Lap 57 – Oscar Piastri restarts but not as good as the last time but hangs onto his lead. Max Verstappen on the softer tyre has a small window to really annoy Lando Norris but doesn’t quite manage it. A few moves in the midfield keeps the commentator excited while Piastri gets the lead over a second and out of DRS.

ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD RUS ALB ANT GAS ALO BEA

Lap 58 – Kimi Antonelli adding a pit lane speeding penalty to his accident penalty. Further back Yuki Tsunoda passes Bortoleto who has fallen out of the points quickly since the restart.

Lap 60 – The gap between the McLarens is swinging between inside and outside of DRS. Could there be a championship defining battle to come in the last part of the race?

Lap 64 – The gap is maintaining at over 1.5 second and Piastri is doing a great job in front. As he had all race.

Lap 65 – Lando Norris says he smells smoke. Not long after that we can see the smoke. Not long that the McLaren is slowing and failing. Lando Norris is Out!!!! Devastation for the British driver and the British TV Commentary who sounds like their dog and cats have been run over. They say Piastri won’t want to see his team mate’s car on the side of the track. We disagree, I’m sure he is very, very happy with the +25 Championship lead extension.

SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED

This leaves Isack Hadjar in third, Oliver Bearman is career best finish too. Not a bad race for rookies.

ORDER – PIA VER HAD RUS ALB ANT BEA STR ALO GAS

Light drizzle is falling……

SAFETY CAR EXITS

Lap 69 – Oscar Piastri restarts for a third time and does just enough to stay in front of Max Verstappen who is pushing hard. No other movement of position behind, although Antonelli has 15 seconds worth of penalties to serve post-race.

Lap 71 – Piastri has a 1.5 second lead to Max Verstappen with two laps to go. It should be enough for a win and a 25 point extension of his Championship lead.

FINAL LAP – Oscar Piastri cruises around the final lap and wins after leading every lap of the race. Max Verstappen finishes second which isn’t nearly as exciting as Isack Hadjar’s first podium after a mega drive. Other great stories like Oliver Bearman’s best career finish in sixth, great recovery for Alex Albon, and points for Yuki Tsunoda. Lance Stroll also got points, which like his F1 career isn’t really deserved.

FINAL ORDER (Across the line) – PIA VER HAD RUS ALB BEA STR ALO TSU OCO

Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).

These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. 5 points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.

THE GREAT-EST – OSCAR PIASTRI

Despite being overshadowed by his team mate in most sessions over the weekend, Piastri still manages to take pole position and lead the race from the start and lead every lap. Handed a Championship defining bonus when his team mate’s engine failed late in the race. We’re sure he will celebrate with a few laughs.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

ISACK HADJAR – Qualified a magnificent fourth in the Racing Bull, a feat in a rookie year would get more attention except that Hadjar has impressed enough for it to feel like it is normal. But to hold on in the race, keep George Russell and Charles Leclerc at bay was outstanding. Rewarded in full with a first podium when Lando Norris retired. Why would he want a Red Bull?

MAX VERSTAPPEN – Damage limitation weekend, and/or best of the rest. Good start saw him running second in the early laps, until the McLaren of Lando Norris got going. Maintained third for a long time, got a bump into second late.

ALEX ALBON – Not a great qualifying, but as he tends to do, shuffled further and further forward during the race and leaves with a big bag of points.

OLIVER BEARMAN – Best F1 result so far in 6th.

THE GRAPE-EST – LEWIS HAMILTON

Wasn’t looking like too bad a weekend despite being outqualified by his team mate again, and stuck behind him on track. But then he binned it into the wall at turn three, a bad result for someone already losing confidence in his career form at Ferrari.

DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS

LANDO NORRIS – So fast all weekend, and only just pipped for pole position. Also pipped for second at the start but dealt with that decisively out on track and showed good pace thereafter. But cruelly denied at least second with a late race failure. Loses 25 points to his team mate in a Championship where he may not be able to afford to do so.

CARLOS SAINZ – Outqualified Albon for a change and made Q3. Avoided bad luck for a change. Ran in the top ten for most of the race until the Safety Car when he then clashed with Liam Lawson, which he claimed was Lawson’s fault. A slow lap to pit, losing his points, then he is penalised ten seconds for the Lawson incident.

LIAM LAWSON – A very solid weekend including top ten qualifying and running in the points ruined by clashing with Carlos Sainz. Ran last after post-clash pitstops.

KIMI ANTONELLI – A weekend of improved results looekd on the cards, despite missing out on Q3 again. But a poor piece of judgement against Charles Leclerc led to the exit of the Ferrari and a penalty to himself. Another one for pit lane speeding ruined his point scoring finish.

LANCE STROLL –Went off in practice. Went off in qualifying without setting a lap. Started dead last. Walked out on media questioning post qualifying. Not that anyone really cares, as he talks nothing but dross anyway. But why does he persist with F1? And why do fans have to persist with him. Actually did well in the race to run ninth after the safety car and finish seventh, but he is so unlikeable he can stay as the Grape.

CHALRES LECLERC – An underwhelming race ending in the same barrier as his team mate. At least it was not his fault, but same end result.

Was it a good race, loads of action, a tense ending, a surprise result or DNF, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest?

We rate the big race itself, so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.

PRE RACE ACTION (FP, QUAL, SPRINT, OFF TRACK etc) –  3 / 5

Qualifying might have been a McLaren show but at least it was tense and tight. Perfect for a Championship fight.

ON TRACK ACTION (RACE) – 6 / 10

An exciting start that lasted for about half a lap. The Safety Car spiced things up for a bit with a few nice passes and a few ordinary ones. Another Ferrari accident brought out another Safety Car and a little more action. It left a tense final laps battle between the Championship leading McLarens.

ANY SURPRISES? – 5 / 5

McLaren 1-2 wasn’t much of a surprise. Lewis Hamilton binning a car into a wall would have been a surprise two years ago. Izack Hadjar’s form was an eyebrow raiser. But a Lando Norris Mercedes engine failure certainly was.

SEASON IMPORTANCE – 5 / 5

Every race until this Championship is decided will be of high importance and a late race engine failure for Lando Norris sees him lose 25 points to Oscar Piastri. Given the fine margins between the pair, this is huge.

ENDING –  3 / 5

The final Safety Car bunched the field up again, and saw some more overtaking and a tense battle between Piastri and Norris. The Norris DNF was quite the shock. The sadness of the Sky F1 crew was highly annoying. We’re sure they wouldn’t be a even handed and sad if the other McLaren had a failure.

OVERALL RATING – 22 / 30

A great track to watch, and the racing itself wasn’t too bad. Safety Cars help. A late Championship defining moment and a first podium means the race will be remembered
