TEAMS TALKING POINT:

Isaiya Katoa returning is the biggest team news, the halfback key to Tonga’s chances, his returns sees Tuimoala Lolohea move to five eighth and Latu Fainu to the bench. Some quality returns to the outside backs too with Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Robert Toia returning from a rest last match. Not much change for Samoa with only Jazz Tevaga returning to the bench.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak – there’s so much to like about the Tongan winger and his return to the side is welcome for our purposes and the Tongans.

Isaiya Katoa – a halfback of high quality with a future for NSW coming soon, but has been accused of being a little bit quiet in the biggest of games, and there’s not much bigger than this one. A chance for him to own a big game awaits.

Spencer Leniu – a player to watch in any game, his recent appearance have really turned game with his aggression and power, and looking forward to the fireworks when he enters the battle from the bench this weekend.

Jermaine McEwen & Francis Manuleleua – this Newcastle pair have really kicked out in late 2026 and will be just one of the keys to the forward pack battle,

BATTLES TO WATCH:

Stephen Crichton v Robert Toia – two of the better centres in the game going head to head is just of the battles that will make this game great. Toia has had a rest while Crichton played last weekend in PNG.

Wingers – plenty of tries and excitement from both sets of wingers.

Forwards – what a great set of forwards for this match, looking forward to seeing the battle play out over the first 15-20 minutes.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE ABOUT THIS GAME

If you are not into this game, then we question if you care about rugby league at all.

PREDICTION

Samoa have looked the slightly better of the two sides so far, but Samoa have also had a slightly easier draw. It will be super close and entertaining.

STATS

OVERALL H2H – Samoa 11 Tonga 10

WORLD CUPS – Samoa 2 Tonga 1

  • A Tonga win here will level up the H2H in this magnificent match up.
  • Samoa are one win and one loss at CommBank Stadium. So are Tonga, with both teams first wins at the ground coming in this World Cup.

AI GREG NORMAN’S PIC-REDICTION

AI Greg Norman is always on hand to give his opinion on anything sport related, and we harness the power of AI and his imagination to come up with a pictorial prediction.

A battle for the ages, won with the strongmen of the incredible forward packs on show. AI Greg can’t decide, so he just joins in on the flex.

AI PREDICTION

Since everyone else is using AI, why not us for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

We asked AI the following: “Predict the winner of the Tonga v Samoa 2026 Rugby League World Cup match based on historical H2H records, each team’s record at all rugby league World Cups, and the record at the 2026 rugby league World Cup, and each team’s International record from the last 20 years with a recency bias on the last five years, relative toughness of each team’s forward pack, and as an extra non-rugby league quality to consider overall courage of the general population from each country and their genuine passion for rugby league to inspire the team”

AI SAID:

Prediction: Tonga vs Samoa, Rugby League World Cup 2026

Predicted Winner: Samoa
Predicted Score: Samoa 24 – 20 Tonga

This is one of the hardest matches of the entire tournament to predict. The nations are separated by very little in talent, physicality, and passion. My assessment gives Samoa a narrow 54-46 advantage.

1. Historical Head-to-Head

The overall international record is almost perfectly balanced, but Samoa holds a slight edge.

More importantly, Samoa won the most recent meeting, defeating Tonga 34-6 in October 2025, and also famously won their 2022 World Cup quarter-final clash 20-18. [rugbyleagu…roject.org], [theroar.com.au]

Advantage: Samoa

2. Rugby League World Cup History

Historically Samoa’s World Cup résumé is slightly superior.

  • Samoa reached the 2022 Rugby League World Cup Final, defeating England in England before losing to Australia.
  • Tonga’s greatest World Cup runs have included quarter-final and semi-final calibre performances, but they have not yet matched Samoa’s appearance in a World Cup final.

The psychological impact of having already navigated the pressure of a World Cup finals campaign matters.

Advantage: Samoa

3. Form at the 2026 Rugby League World Cup

Based on current tournament information, both teams entered their final group-stage clash in strong positions and with semi-final qualification implications. [rlwc2026guide.com], [nrl.com]

Neither side appears significantly superior on tournament form, making this category essentially even.

Advantage: Even

4. International Record Over the Last 20 Years (Weighted Toward Last 5 Years)

The last five years are particularly important because they reflect the modern Pacific rugby league revolution.

Since 2017, both teams have assembled squads filled with NRL stars. However:

  • Samoa reached the 2022 World Cup Final.
  • Samoa has recorded several major victories over tier-one nations.
  • Samoa’s player depth has arguably increased further since 2022.

Tonga were arguably the standard-bearers of the Pacific revolution between 2017 and 2020, but Samoa’s recent trajectory is slightly stronger.

Advantage: Samoa

5. Forward Pack Comparison

This is where things become fascinating.

Tonga

Potential pack featuring players such as:

  • Addin Fonua-Blake
  • Jason Taumalolo
  • Haumole Olakau’atu
  • Stefano Utoikamanu
  • Taniela Paseka [nrl.com]

Samoa

Potential pack featuring:

If fully available, Samoa arguably possess the game’s best middle forward in Payne Haas, while Tonga possess arguably the game’s most destructive front-rower in Addin Fonua-Blake.

The battle is incredibly close, but Samoa’s middle rotation is slightly deeper.

Tiny Advantage: Samoa

6. Halves and Game Management

Samoa

Tonga

  • Isaiya Katoa
  • Emerging elite spine talent [nrl.com]

Tonga may eventually have the better long-term organising halfback, but right now Samoa’s big-game experience remains superior.

Advantage: Samoa

7. The “Passion and Courage” Factor

This is impossible to measure scientifically, but it is part of rugby league culture.

Both Tonga and Samoa are among the most passionate rugby league nations on Earth.

  • Both nations regularly produce extraordinary support at international matches.
  • Both cultures place enormous value on family, community, faith and national pride.
  • Players from both teams consistently describe representing their heritage as the highest honour in rugby league.

I see no meaningful difference here. Any attempt to separate them would be guesswork.

Advantage: Even

Overall Verdict

Factor Edge
H2H Record Samoa
World Cup History Samoa
Recent International Form Samoa
2026 Tournament Form Even
Forward Pack Slight Samoa
Spine & Game Management Samoa
National Passion & Courage Even

Final Prediction

Samoa have a slight advantage in overall team balance, recent World Cup pedigree, and proven ability to win the biggest pressure games.

Tonga absolutely have the size, aggression and forward power to win, and if Addin Fonua-Blake, Jason Taumalolo and their pack dominate possession, Tonga can certainly prevail. [nrl.com]

Predicted Result:
🥇 Samoa 24 – 20 Tonga

Win Probability

  • Samoa: 54%
  • Tonga: 46%

Expect a match decided in the final 10 minutes, with fewer than one converted try separating the sides.
