Premier League Gameweek 3 Summary
FRI 8PM – IPSWICH v LIVERPOOL
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight to Ipswich, with a W6 D2 record and a combined score of 25-4. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight trips to Ipswich, with a W5 D3 record and Ipswich have failed to score in the last three home games. These teams haven’t met on a Friday yet. Liverpool were W2 D4 v promoted sides last season.
Verdict: Ipswich weren’t as bad as their 5-2 loss v Man Utd last weekend suggest, and similarly it almost feels like two points from two games so far for Liverpool would be quite underwhelming. A real test for the Tractor Boys against one of big clubs at home.
Prediction: Ipswich 2 Liverpool 2
SAT 12:30PM – NEWCASTLE v BOURNEMOUTH
Bournemouth are undefeated in their last eight games v Newcastle (W3 D5). Bournemouth have won the last two games in Newcastle. Similar for Saturday kick offs – Bournemouth are undefeated in 6 games – W3 D3. Bournemouth did have the fifth best points per game away from home last season.
Verdict: Lucky this is the early kick off given the distance between the clubs. Newcastle are looking ok after their standard win at Spurs these days, Bournemouth are winless but certainly not hopeless at this stage and don’t seem to like losing to Newcastle.
Prediction: Newcastle 1 Bournemouth 1
SAT 3PM – NOTTINGHAM FOREST v TOTTENHAM
Nottingham Forest have won four in a row v Spurs including a pair of 3-0 wins last season. Spurs won the last game at Nottingham Forest on a Saturday, back in 1999. Spurs also won the most recent game on a Saturday anywhere between these two sides in 2023. Net Expected Goals says Nottingham Forest is +1.8 for the season and should have won last weekend instead of a draw. For the record Spur’s net Expected Goals is -3.2.
Verdict: Is this a relegation three pointer already? It Tottenham were any other non-big six clubs, then their recent season’s performance, a 0-2 start to this season and are dead last, questionable transfer market spending and having a very volatile manager would lead them to be a favourite from the drop. Given two of the three promoted sides look quite capable, they won’t want to wait much longer.
Prediction: Nottingham Forest 1 Tottenham 1
SAT 3PM – MANCHESTER CITY v COVENTRY
These teams haven’t met since 2002 in the Championship where Man City won 4-2. Man City have lost just one of their last 11 home games v Coventry (W7 D3 L1). Man City were W5 D1 v promoted teams last season.
Verdict: Poor Coventry, what a start to their season facing the two recent Premier League winners away from home in their first three games. Maybe the EPL wants them to fail. Although the loss to Hull last weekend is their own fault.
Prediction: Man City 4 Coventry 0
SAT 3PM – BRENTFORD v SUNDERLAND
Brentford are unbeaten in their last four home games v Sunderland – W2 D2. Sunderland were W1 D2 L4 for trips to London teams last season.
Verdict: This game would be much more fun if they let them both play in their home strips.
Prediction: Brentford 2 Sunderland 0
SAT 3PM – BRIGHTON v LEEDS
Wins went to the home side for both of these games last season. Overall since 2014 – Brighton have lost just the two games of 15 v Leeds – W10 D3 L2. Brighton are undefeated in their last ten home games v Leeds – W7 D3.
Verdict: Could be the entertainer clash of the weekend.
Prediction: Brighton 2 Leeds 1
SAT 3PM – FULHAM v CRYSTAL PALACE
Five of the last nine games between these teams have ended in a draw. Crystal Palace are unbeaten in their last seven visits to Fulham – W4 D3. These teams had solid midfield form v London clubs last season – Fulham W5 D2 L5 and Crystal Palace W4 D4 L4.
Verdict: Looming as an important clash between two lower half winless London clubs. Not a relegation six pointer, yet.
Prediction: Fulham 0 Crystal Palace 0
SAT 5:30PM – HULL v ASTON VILLA
Three of the last four games between these sides has ended in a draw. Aston Villa lead the Premier League H2H by six wins to one win with a draw in the eight games played. Expected goals says Hull should have lost their first two games, but there they sit with two wins from two games. Aston Villa don’t have a total expected goals for this season over one yet. Both of their games saw an expected goals score of 0.28.
Verdict: Why can’t the Hull fairytale start continue? Aston Villa are usually slow to start a season and haven’t been great so far this season.
Prediction: Hull 1 Aston Villa 1
SUN 2PM – EVERTON v MANCHESTER UTD
The away team won 1-0 for both of these games last season. Man Utd are unbeaten in their last four games at Everton – W3 D1. Man Utd have won the last three Sunday games between these clubs too. Man Utd’s W9 D2 L3 was good enough to top the points per game for Sunday fixtures last season, Everton were midfield with W3 D1 L5.
Verdict: Hopefully Everton are better at football than Transfer Windows. Meanwhile Man Utd aren’t going to get as many gifts as they got last week v Ipswich, but they still have Bruno Fernandes.
Prediction: Everton 0 Man Utd 2
SUN 4:30PM – ARSENAL v CHELSEA
Arsenal are undefeated in their last nine league games v Chelsea – W6 D3. Arsenal have won their last four league home games v Chelsea. Arsenal are unbeaten in the last five Sunday league games between these sides, but Chelsea were undefeated in the 11 games before that. Arsenal were W8 D2 L3 on a Sunday – the second best points per game, while Chelsea’s W1 D3 L3 was the fourth worst return.
Verdict: The first premium clash of the season and this should be fun between Chelsea’s almost swashbuckling pirate style of football this season and the machine-like efficiency of Arsenal. Could be like a Terminator movie.
Prediction: Arsenal 2 Chelsea 2
