EVERYDAY NEWS – The Social Media Backlash

A Facebook user has quit a TV fandom group.

As a fan of the long-running sitcom The Gaming Gang, Adam had enjoyed interacting in The Gaming Gang Fans’ Facebook page. At least until last Tuesday.

On his way to work, Adam had an idea for a TGG episode and wrote a detailed and considered post on the fan page. While he was happy with the results and the potential of his idea, he was shocked by the backlash.

The post mostly had Laugh and Angry reactions, with a lot of comments ridiculing his idea, abusing him for his lack of originality, calling him a ‘fake fan’ because he didn’t understand the characters properly, and telling him not to bother pitching episode ideas again.

Frustrated, Adam deleted the post and quit the group.

“I admit posting it early in the morning wasn’t the smartest idea. I could have waited a bit and let the idea develop in my head when I was at work, but the damage is done now.”

Upon reflection, he has no regrets about quitting the group.

“It was fun at first, but there’s a lot of obsessed fans who believe the show is life and death and routinely watch all the seasons on a loop. I’m all for enjoying TV shows, but you can also watch other shows. You’re not being ‘disloyal’ to The Gaming Gang if you watch something else. Heaven knows the actors work on movies and other TV shows all the time.”
