A veteran Australian rock back are capitalising on their revival with a new TV show.
The Horses Love Humans Variety Hour will air on Tuesday nights on Channel 10 and 10Play, with 45 minutes (not including ads) of music, interviews, sketches, and stand up comedy.
As a fan of classic Australian variety shows of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, lead signer David Lemons is excited about bringing back the format for a new audience.
“Just like the Horses comeback tour, we’re embracing nostalgia for a new audience,” he said. “This isn’t going to be an hour of scathing political satire and won’t change your worldview of current events. It’s a bit of fun and silliness.”
Each show will open with the band playing one of their classic songs, followed by a handful of pre-recorded comedy sketches by the band, a short interview with a local or international celebrity, ‘Tales From the Road’ (a short segment where the band reminisces about their favourite tour stories), and closes with the band performing a cover song.
“The sketches have been a blast. We’ve gone for surreal Monty Python-style humour where it’s weird and silly for the sake of it and it doesn’t matter than none of us can act,” said Lemons. “And the interviews are going to be very friendly: the producers wanted to include Channel 10 actors or reality stars with a show on the network, so we’re keeping it gentle and ‘softball’. These interviews won’t be going viral for the wrong reasons.”
In an attempt to engage audiences, the band will ask fans to vote on the two songs they’ll play via their social media accounts (Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok). Fans can vote from a selection of six songs each week (three Horses songs and three covers chosen by the band), with the most popular ones on aggregate winning. Fans can also sign up for free tickets to be part of the studio audience, with the episodes taped on Monday evenings.
