A new streaming app is attempting to recreate the experience of old video stores.

Called The Ultimate Video Store, the app lets users to create a free account, create their own character (with up to four users allowed on the one account), and leisurely browse a a virtual video store, with a mixture of new releases, older movies, TV series, and sports documentaries.

Users can browse the categorised shelves and view virtual video covers (including the blurb and photos on the back). Once they make a choice, they’re taken to the relevant app where they can stream or rent the video. While they have to have an account for the relevant streaming apps, a special ‘overnight rental’ option allows them to create a free 24 hour account to purchase the movie, with The Ultimate Video Store receiving a percentage of the advertising costs from each streaming service that users access.

“I used to love browsing video stores as a kid,” said The Ultimate Video Store‘s creator Adam Jones. “This virtual video experience is half-video game, half-streaming app, so hopefully it gives users a more enjoyable experience when finding a movie.”
