Important officials from an anonymous Sydney NRL club are currently on a research trip to India for the ICC World Cup. But it’s not the cricket-watching junket you’d expect.
“Everyone makes fun of our club for poor crowds, but the incompetence of the BCCI in the lead up to the Cup is inspirational,” said one Sydney-based NRL official (who wished to stay anonymous). “India is the biggest cricketing nation and rules the game financially, yet they can’t get anyone to turn up to cricket’s biggest event. Unless India are playing of course.”
The official is spending two weeks in India, where he plans to gather information on how to drive real fans away from the game so they’ll be forced to watch at home, thus ensuring advertising revenue and TV ratings go through the roof.
“All those empty seats are inspiring. If our home games can be half as empty in 2024, then I’ve done my job.”
