NRL Grand Final 2016 Day – Five thoughts

The NRL Grand Final 2016 has been wrapped up with a long overdue win for the Sharks.

Talking of wraps, here our thoughts on the Grand Final 2016 day.

ROOSTERS STUN PANTHERS, BUT PENRITH LOOKING GOOD FOR YEARS TO COME

Red hot favourites Penrith were probably counting Chickens, or Roosters at half time in the Holden Cup Grand Final, but they were shocked as most of us watching at the Roosters come back.

They overcame a 22 point deficit at the break to power home over the Penrith side who have been the most dominant all year.

Silver lining for Penrith is that this is the second year in a row in the Under 20’s Grand Final and with their young NRL side looking on the edge of greatness it’s a great time to be a Panthers fan.

FINALLY NSW ARE BETTER THAN QUEENSLAND

I’m sure NSW would have preferred an Origin series win, but Illawarra’s demolition of Burleigh in the State Championship final was a consolation prize.

A first win in the third instalment to a NSW side, they did exactly what Burleigh did to Redcliffe in the first meeting in the finals. Simply blew the opposition away in the first half.

No surprise to see Shaun Nona as one of the best, if only an NRL club would take a chance.

Shame for the Bears though.

MEH-NTERTAINMENT

You knew entertainment for the NRL Grand Final 2016 wasn’t going to be great, but seeing Richard Wilkins merely confirmed that.

Whilst it was terrible or have an incident to remember, it wasn’t overly enthralling and one wonders if anyone would care if they didn’t have anything.

We simply say Meh.

GOOD LUCK TO THE SHARKS AND THEIR FANS

Once the result was final and had started to sink in, you couldn’t help but feel good for the Sharks fans who had yet to taste a premiership. We thought Souths fans had it tough pre 2014, and we did. Ken Shine, Arthur Kittinas, Paul “Supercoach” Langmack.

Whilst they were playing Fifita, Ennis and Gallen make them so hard to like. Thankfully that subsides when the game is over. And you change the channel.

You can’t say that the Sharks didn’t deserve it, they were the better side throughout, and would have been truly robbed if Melbourne had of scored at the death, if their players could find Cooper Cronk.

Paul Gallen should get a copy of Cameron Smith’s interview to Darren Lockyer for a lesson in how to be gracious in defeat.

At least he smiled and stopped whining for a change.

YOU REALISE HOW LITTLE YOU MISS CHANNEL NEIN

NRL Grand Final 2016 was just the fifth NRL game we’ve had to endure in 2016.

We’ve bitched about them all season, so why not have one last boot.

Pretty sure to say that they haven’t been missed. Nor will I be returning next year.

Let’s hope they get less of a say next year, so we have a greater rotation of Sunday afternoon games, and a kick off that isn’t 20 minutes late.
