Who doesn’t like a good mascot or many Football League mascots?
With the International break taking the EPL and Championship away, we’re left with just League One and Two this weekend, and in addition to our weekly musings, we give our thoughts on the best Football League Mascots.
In honour of the two lower tiers of the Football providing all the action this weekend, we have only considered mascots from League One and Two.
Like when the Greyhounds stepped up during Horse Flu, so League One and Two step up as the premier Football in the UK this weekend. Although the Non League teams and competition are having their big day this Saturday with Non League Day.
Similarly again to the Greyhounds, League 1 and 2 will be forgotten quickly once the big teams return. A shame. But they are not forgotten by The Gurgler, and with 4 games on offer on BeIn Sports, there’s never been a better time to drop and stoop to the lower tiers.
One may ask why about the Football League Mascots bit. Well, we were going to do just the five, as is standard for our weekly review, but there were far too many not to share more.
So here’s our Football League weekly with added 15 Great Football League mascots.
Firstly with the 15 Great Football League mascots we say…..

A FEW THINGS FROM LAST WEEK – LEAGUE ONE AND TWO EDITION
- Kick off of the old Johnstone Paint Trophy now called Checkatrade Trophy. The comp previously for just Leagues One and Two has been expanded to include EPL and Championship teams’ academy sides. It has been an unpopular move as fans of the lower division clubs oppose B Teams being allowed on the Football League. This article from The Guardian shows the fan disdain for the revamp, record low crowds and a lot of unhappy fans. There’s even a specific hashtag you can use to protest. #BTeamBoycott
- A point of interest from the first round of the Checkatrade Trophy was the League One and Two sides that beat the EPL side’s Academy sides. Millwall (WBA), Coventry (West Ham), Plymouth (Swansea), Bradford (Stoke), Cambridge (Middlesbrough)
- The big club who always the favourite to escape League One – Sheffield United – won their first game but remain in the bottom four.
- Two teams who won the FA Cups in the 80’s – 1987 (Coventry) and 1988 (Wimbledon) are also in the bottom four. Wimbledon are dead last. I wonder if they miss the big man aka The Beast aka Adebayo Akinfenwa yet?
