We’re always talking and bitching about sport at The Gurgler, so why not have a weekly whine, with our weekly presentation of the sporting winners & losers for the weekend that was.
WINNERS
- Solomone Kata’s fend to score a long range try against the Titans was something pretty special. One of the biggest big don’t argue. The game itself had plenty too. Pity it seems unlikely that both teams will make the eight.
- Upset week in the NRL is always welcomed.
- Parramatta who defy every excuse under the sun to continue winning. If only half of the comp played with their desire.
- The City of Adelaide v Brisbane Lions in the AFL. The Lions have played Port Adelaide and Adelaide in consecutive weeks, and the two teams from the City of Churches delivered a powerful combined 234 point margin.
- BeIN Sports. Much was made about Fox Sports losing EPL to Optus, and it sucks. However, as a fan of the English Football League with my team destined to remain in it for the next 25 decades, the fact that there were four of the 12 games on offer live this weekend was great.
- Queensland Cup results. Although we like Burleigh, the results over the weekend leaves Gurgler’s childhood team Redcliffe 1st, and our new heroes from PNG even closer to the top spot too. Townsville, with Gurgler player of the year Willie Minoga in their side, are also not far away. It looks as if we are going to be guaranteed at least Redcliffe, PNG Hunters or Willie Minoga in the final at Suncorp Stadium in September. Good times.
- Ipswich Town for starting off their EFL with a win against a side they should beat.
LOSERS
- Brisbane Lions again
- Opening Ceremony. Pfffft.
- Hayne Cam – whilst he wasn’t on the field.
- Channel Nein getting what they deserve and missing out on Jarryd Hayne’s return. That’s what you get for basing your schedule around a Sydney UBD. Although Fox Sports went a little overkill at Hayne’s return, they can because they have the rights to all the Gold Coast’s games. Channel Nein now have a final weeks schedule that does not include the Sharks or Canberra. It also doesn’t include the Gold Coast. Giving another boost to Fox Sports. Channel Nein can have all the Souths, roosters, and Dragons they want.
- Jerks who ruin tipping comps.
