The Gurgler’s Sporting Predictions of the Year

With the new year just start. and our tips in for our year long sports tipping competition – Tipstradamus 2000 – it’s time to share our thoughts on we think might happen in the sporting world in 2016.

Big Year for Australian Golf

With a major in his back pocket, Jason Day will vie for the number 1 this year with Jordan Spieth and Rory McIllroy. There’s always Adam Scott who is thereabouts in the majors. Throw in Steven Bowditch who has started 2016 off well. As well as Marc Leishman and Matt Jones. Plus Gurgler favourite Rod Pampling is back on the US PGA Tour too.

Miguel Angel Jiminez aka The Mechanic wins the Olympics Golf

We have sort of given up on our favourite international golfer to ever win a major, but what a sight it would be on an Olympic podium with the man with his cigar smoking whilst receiving the goal medal.

News Channels will run the standard Olympics venue is not ready three months out.

In what has now become a standard news piece before each major sporting event, there’ll be the story about how Rio isn’t ready, with shots of filthy hotel rooms from 12 months ago being made out like they were yesterday. Plus the regular look at how much the country is spending whilst they conveniently find the poor neighbourhood to stand in front of for 30 seconds.

Saturation Olympics Coverage Will End in Disappointment.

In the months leading up to the Olympics, we will have to suffer from every official partner the Olympics will throw at us. There’ll be 100 day countdowns, and massively inflated Australian medal tally counts. Ultimately, the premium events aside, it will be 45 seconds of coverage of something you want to watch, followed by and interrupted by repeats of previous success by Australian. Only thing that worse is the constant crow-barring of network celebrities and personnel. Could be worse than that, it could be on Channel 9 again.

Lewis Hamilton will smash Rosberg and win a third straight then retire to concentrate on his music career and celebrity life.

One of these seems very likely indeed, and although the other is a long shot, who could bet against it happening.

Red Bull will continue whining about unfair engines.

We get it, Red Bull would win everything with a better engine. So do Mercedes and Ferrari, that’s why they didn’t supply them. Perhaps if they thanked Renault more during the power years others may have been tempted. But why would they now. If Red Bull win, the engine won’t get any credit. Sticking with the Renault and calling it about a watch was their only option for 2016. Interest will lie with who they can get in 2017, and what it will be called. Or if they hang around.

F1 will agree on new rules for 2017, and they will make the cars even harder to overtake.

Given the track record of decision making, the teams and FIA will start off well, but it will eventually create cars that will be faster but even harder to overtake. And given the current regulations with the engine, one doesn’t expect to see anything improve entertainment wise on the track.

Channel 9 will belatedly join the Big Bash TV rights bidding.

After no doubt laughing at the price Channel 10 paid for the rights last time, no doubt both 7 and 9 will try and join the bandwagon now it rates its arse off and is being attended by record crowd. Hopefully Channel 10 will be rewarded for their excellent coverage. At least one cricket coverage is bearable each summer. Can you imagine the orgasmic over-excitement from the blokiest, mateiest commentary team in team if they were left in charge of a cricket that is actually exciting.

No channel will show Chris Gayle next year.

If the fall out from the interview with Mel McLaughlln wasn’t enough to earn him a ban for next year, the law suit about a previous encounter certainly will.

AFL will continue to out perform the NRL in most facets of running a major sport.

Until the NRL get themselves a CEO, and a decent one that knows more about the sport than the previous one. Sure they don’t need someone from within rugby league, but someone who knows the Test Captain’s name is a start. And, as long as it is not Todd Greenberg either.

Hawthorn will probably win the flag again.

Given how the Hawks have pulled the pants down of their nearest challenger in the last few grand finals, it is hard to see anyone beating them again. As long as Roy and HG do the call, we don’t really care.

Something doesn’t seem quite right at Souths. 2016 could be a stinker.

After an off season that started off with the hospitalisation of two young players, and the return of Sam Burgess at the expense of another couple of players. Tim Grant has left. There were rumours of Michael Maguire interested in the Newcastle job. More rumours of star player Adam Reynolds not being happy. This all after the very ordinary form of Souths at the end of last season, and that was at near full strength, and Isaac Luke has also left. It looks a mixture of trouble.

Ipswich Town will break a cycle of mediocrity and join the EPL.

With Murphy’s Law in place, the Tractor Boys will finally make the EPL after just getting Foxtel after years of holding off, and Foxtel losing the EPL rights.

A Football players from the Spanish league will break the World Record transfer fee in July.

With names like Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar being thrown about for the EPL or the owner of the French league PSG, one can see some serious money being thrown about to get these stars.

A few quick ones

FIFA presidential elections will turn into farce with law suits, counter law suits and the return of Sepp Blatter

Leicester City will win the EPL.

Stoke City will win the FA Cup.

Barcelona will beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

The Roar will win the A League.

And very few will read The Gurgler.

But it’s their loss, look at the gold we produce.
