The Own Goal Weekly – EPL Edition

Another full round of EPL fixtures after a midweek European run of fixtures that ended with mostly positive results for the English participants.

Those lucky or unlucky enough to have the midweek off are waiting to take advantage of any of those big clubs that are slightly off their game. In fact three of the six form teams (based on last 6 games) are teams that are involved in Europe.

Here’s our preview of the weekend ahead.

SUNDERLAND v STOKE – SAT 3PM UK – FOX SPORTS RED BUTTON
A window into the different season that is the 2015-16 is that Leicester are 1st, Chelsea are 16th, and Stoke are currently equal 2nd in the last 6 form guide. They are currently 11th but only three points behind 6th placed West Ham. Big Sam at Sunderland has turned things around to a degree, and a win at Crystal Palace and a derby win against Newcastle helps, but they remain in the bottom three.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
STOKE have 13 points from a possible 18 with all four of their wins in that 1-0.

GURGLER TIPS – STOKE to win 1-0

ASTON VILLA v WATFORD – SAT 3PM UK – FOX SPORTS 3
Remi Garde may have thought that the job at Aston Villa might not be too bad when they drew with Manchester City, but a 4-0 defeat at Everton last weekend will ensure reality joined them at training this week. Watford were compeditive against Manchester United last weekend, and may been the team most likely to survive of the promoted teams so far.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
ASTON VILLA average 1 goal per 2 Home games. WATFORD lost two in a row for the 1st time this season last weekend.

GURGLER TIPS – WATFORD to win.

BOURNEMOUTH v EVERTON – SAT 3PM UK – FOX SPORTS RED BUTTON
Bournemouth broke a run of four straight losses last weekend, but still remain winless in 7 games, and a length injury list and current 19th placing is a bleak situation. If they stay in touch and get some players back or spend wisely in January they might be OK. Everton thrashed Aston Villa last weekend and a in a tight bunch of upper midfield team battling to take advantage of Chelsea’s season and grab an unlikely fourth.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
EVERTON have scored twice as many, and conceded twice as many goals at home than away.

GURGLER TIPS – EVERTON to win

CRYSTAL PALACE v NEWCASTLE – SAT 3PM UK – FOX SPORTS 5
It’s all about Alan Pardew, who up and left Newcastle to relegation threatened Crystal Palace and turned them into an exciting, very solid EPL team. Newcastle fans weren’t too unhappy to see him leave, and will be very happy if they can leave London with a win. Pardew will be keen to show them what they aren’t missing.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
CRYSTAL PALACE have not beaten NEWCASTLE in their last 6 meetings.

GURGLER TIPS – CRYSTAL PALACE to win and turn that stat around

MANCHESTER CITY v SOUTHAMPTON – SAT 3PM UK – FOX SPORTS 4
Manchester City left Italy with a loss midweek, and their opponents who were previously the second best form team lost to Stoke last weekend. The Manchester side will still be smarting from their 4-1 hammering by Liverpool last weekend too. They will probably take that all out on Southampton, but maybe not.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
MANCHESTER CITY lost to a midfield side at home after their last loss to Juventus in the Champions League earlier in the season.

GURGLER TIPS
MANCHESTER CITY to still win.

LEICESTER v MANCHESTER UNITED – SAT 5:30PM UK – FOX SPORTS 4
Who’d think that at this stage of the season Manchester United visiting Leicester would be the top of the table clash. Especially after all and sundry tipped Leicester to go backwards under Claudio Ranieiri. Best thing about Leicester being on top is that the stars of their current run come from their Championship side and in Jamie Vardy from the depths of Non League before that. His 10 goals in a row is proof that there are probably similar gems out there waiting to be given the chance. Man Utd somehow still continue to be put down by many despite making it to 2nd at this stage.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
MANCHESTER UNITED have only conceded 2 goals in their last 9 games.

GURGLER TIPS – Entertaining score DRAW

SPURS v CHELSEA – SUN 12PM UK – FOX SPORTS 4
This game ended in a 5-3 win to Spurs last year, when Spurs weren’t flying as high and Chelsea were on such a poor run. Both teams had a long away trip during the week with Chelsea in Israel and Spurs in Azerbaijan. Chelsea at least got two days more rest, Spurs game was on Thursday night UK Time. The ability to turn around is the key and will no doubt be the excuse whoever loses.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
Last 10 games: SPURS have 22 points, CHELSEA have 10.

GURGLER TIPS – DRAW

WEST HAM v WEST BROMICH ALBION – SUN 2:05PM UK – FOX SPORTS 4
Battle of West Ham from East London and West Brom from the centre of England, and a potentially more intriguing game on paper than it may seem. West Brom were great beating Arsenal last weekend and a win here would get them within one point of West Ham.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
WEST HAM are 10th in Home form, WBA are 10th in away form. There have only been 7 goals in total from WBA’s last six away games.

GURGLER TIPS – WBA to win.

LIVERPOOL v SWANSEA – SUN 4:00PM UK – FOX SPORTS 4
A tale of two managers at either end of the love scale. Liverpool are riding high after their big wins away over Chelsea and Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp could hardly be more popular. A loss for Swansea could see the end of Garry Monk after a reasonable stint in charge.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
LIVERPOOL have a for and against of 15-5 in their last 4 games v SWANSEA

GIRGLER TIPS – LIVERPOOL to win.

NORWICH v ARSENAL – SUN 4:00PM UK – FOX SPORTS 2
Arsenal kept their slim chances of Champions League knockout stage alive midweek and will take that confidence into their trip to Norwich. Norwich were compeditive v Chelsea last weekend, but Arsenal are a much different prospect right now.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT
3 of the last 4 games involving Norwich have ended in 1-0 to one of the teams.
