A new year is here, one full of huge amount of sport waiting to be seen and enjoyed, sport doesn’t watch itself you know. But with so much to watch, how does one prioritise it all? Well allow us to offer up The Gurgler’s Essential 2025 Sporting Calendar.
The Gurgler’s Essential 2025 Sporting Calendar isn’t an exhaustive list, who has time to watch everything and good luck to those that do, but it is our selection of the major events and potential talking points around your workplace and/or dining table.
The Gurgler’s Essential 2025 Sporting Calendar Top Five
If we are forced to choose our top five sporting events to follow for 2025 we will. So here are the five events we won’t miss in 2025, and suggest you don’t either.
MARCH – NRL RESUMES
You don’t know what you have until it’s gone, and that’s certainly the case with no NRL hogging our TV screens on a Thursday through to Sunday.
APRIL – US MASTERS GOLF
If you’re only going to watch one tournament a year, may as well make it the most famous with the best players with a few golden oldies thrown, you know Bernard Langer will be there somehow, and loads of scenery. Even if the ghosts of Greg Norman’s Major still lurks.
MAY – MONACO GRAND PRIX
A bit cliched this one, as every second Grand Prix in Monaco is boring as. Since last year’s was a yawn fest, and Australia’s Oscar Piastri was second, we’re banking on an Aussie win with loads of action in 2025.
MAY – FINAL DAY OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE
With Man City currently busted arse in the Premier League, the title race is more open than ever. Throw in a potentially interesting relegation battle too, with our team Ipswich Town looking to stay up, but not as much as Everton who’d hate for their new stadium to have its first game in 2025/26 to be in the second division.
SEPTEMBER – EUROPEAN CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS
Every year we go on and on about the European Cricket Championships, and there’s a reason why. Because it’s excellent. A T10 competition on a small ground in Spain featuring European countries you had no idea liked cricket. What more do you need. Or want.
The Gurgler’s Essential 2025 Sporting Calendar Month by Month
JANUARY / FEBRUARY
A lot of good stuff is already under way, so there’s not much to add for the start to 2025. The FA Cup Round 3 is always a lot of fun, with the teams from the top two divisions of English football playing the teams from the 3rd division and below. There’s usually an upset or two as the higher teams show zero respect to the traditional cup competition. Talking of second division, the UK Super League comp kicks off in February.
Even bigger than the FA Cup is the NFL’s big night out with the Superbowl. Hopefully it features a Ravens win and a half time act that can’t be beat. Or at least not Katy Perry.
| Sport | Date | Event |
| Football | 10/01/2025 | FA Cup R3 |
| NFL | 9/02/2025 | Super Bowl |
| Rugby League | 13/02/2025 | Super League R1 |
MARCH
The winter football seasons in Australia kick off, the NRL go all the way to Las Vegas to make as big a deal as possible out of it. The AFL less so, but they tend to attract fans regardless.
Another big deal is the F1 season kicking off in Melbourne again for the first time in a while. Cue the moaning from European viewers who have to suffer three races in an awful timeslot a year. The combination of the Albert Park track, the opening race, and the unknown of who’s actually fast is unbeatable and must watch.
The Major League Baseball also kicks off for those inclined. Only another 160 odd games to go after that.
| Sport | Date | Event |
| Rugby League | 1/03/2025 | SL Las Vegas |
| NRL | 2/03/2025 | Las Vegas R1 |

| Other | 27/03/2025 | Major League Baseball Begins |
APRIL
US Masters golf obviously highlights April, but for something even slower but almost as green is the World Snooker Championships. This could be easily dismissed without watching but it’s like the Darts World Championship in December, just a bit quieter and slower and with slightly fewer yobs. The AFL’s copy of Rugby League’s Magic Round also happens.
| Sport | Date | Event |
| AFL | 10/04/2025 | Gather Round |
| Golf | 10/04/2025 | US Masters |
| Snooker | 19/04/2025 | World Championships |
MAY
A big month of sport with the proper Magic Rounds for both Australian and UK rugby league comps. Plus the State of Origin kicks offs which is great for the actual interstate contest, but the drawn out nature of the three game series ruins the NRL for two months.
For something even more brutal than State of Origin, the Ice Hockey World Championships start. As ever, we’re on Finland’s side. There’s also even more broken bones at the Annual Cheese Rolling in May.
All the football ends in May, which should be very exciting.
Throw in a bunch of Grands Prix including the Monaco GP and there’s almost too much.

JUNE
June has the Test Championship which may/may not feature Australia, and if it does it becomes more interesting. Especially with South Africa in the final, given their ability to choke.
The Canadian Grand Prix is a race where lots of stuff usually happens and is worth the early morning effort.
The next money making grab from FIFA also debuts in June with an expanded Club World Cup to go with an expanded wallet. But some of the contests should be interesting enough.
| Sport | Date | Event |
| Cricket | 1/06/2025 | World Test Championship |
| Formula 1 | 15/06/2025 | Canadian GP |
| Football | 15/06/2025 | FIFA World Club Cup |
| Rugby League | 18/06/2025 | State of Origin II |
JULY
July’s start is for the ladies with the NRLW kicking off, and the Wife Carrying Championships on as well. The NRLW is the better competition of the two, it’s rugby league in a purer form than the men’s competition which has been ruined by wrestling, The Bunker and Phil Rothfield. Talk of ruined rugby league, with Origin finally out of the way the NRL is back to normal.
Two events that involve dangerous travels and probably drugs to recover is the Tour de France and Running of the Bulls. Cycling may not be our cup of tea usually, or ever, but there’s a US Masters like attraction to the Tour de France.
The most polite major in golf The Open aka British Open tees off in July and will hopefully feature a bunch of old names hogging the leaderboard for the first two rounds. Especially Bernard Langer.
To end the sport with great scenery theme, F1’s best track in Spa hosts the Belgian GP.
| Sport | Date | Event |
| Rugby League | 3/07/2025 | NRLW Begins |
| Other | 4/07/2025 | Wife Carrying World Championships |
| Cycling | 5/07/2025 | Tour de France |

| Rugby League | 9/07/2025 | State of Origin III |
| NRL | 17/07/2025 | Round 20 (Origin stops ruining NRL) |
| Golf | 17/07/2025 | The Open |
| Formula 1 | 27/07/2025 | Belgian GP |
AUGUST
August may look a little light on here, and there’s the sharper end of the NRL and AFL seasons keep sportswatching fit, but the highlight here is European Football leagues kicking off, including the Premier League. Eventually the late nights and early morning will catch up, especially if your team is going badly, but August will see some new season enthusiasm for a while yet.
| Sport | Date | Event |
| Football | 1/08/2025 | New European Seasons Begin |
SEPTEMBER
September sees the AFL and NRL go into finals mode, and while that is important nothing beats the European Cricket Championships starting.
Just before that takes our attention the World Athletics Championships will be on and hopefully feature Gout Gout.
Golf’s Ryder Cup battle between US and Europe should be as spicy as ever. Who knows how that will be with the politics in the USA by then.

| NRL | 4/09/2025 | Round 27 (Final Round) |
| Formula 1 | 7/09/2025 | Italian GP |

| Golf | 25/09/2025 | Ryder Cup |
| AFL | 27/09/2025 | Grand Final |
OCTOBER
Rugby League have their Grand Finals, but the best day out for sporting sloth is in October with the Bathurst 1000. One of the great days on the lounge. The Moto GP on Philip Island isn’t as long on the lounge but always worth keeping in the calendar.
| Sport | Date | Event |
| NRL | 5/10/2025 | Grand Final |
| Rugby League | 11/10/2025 | SL Grand Final |
| Motorsports | 12/10/2025 | Bathurst 1000 |
| Moto GP | 19/10/2025 | Australian GP |
NOVEMBER
The Moto GP season comes to a close, just as the Ashes cricket series kicks off, which will hopefully be just as good as the current India v Australia series, with even more action.
F1 has the big Las Vegas race for a third year.
