A podcast about a popular TV show has quickly descended into self-indulgent nonsense.
The official podcast for quirky Netflix Dramedy Small-Town News was meant to be an insiders view/show recap, with each episode analysed by the show’s cast and crew, and hosted by the show’s director.
The podcast – called The Small-Town News Wrap, started with good intentions, with the director providing the promised analysis of season one episodes while interviewing a wide array of actors and behind-the-scenes crew. Each episode went for a tight 45 minutes.
Then the show went off the rails from season two, with the guests more interested in blowing smoke up each other’s arses, telling incredibly specific stories about their co-workers, and impossible to follow in-jokes.
Eventually, the director gave up trying to draw the conversation back to the episodes, with with the podcast length blowing out to between 90 minutes to two hours.
“It’s a mess now,” said Small-Town News superfan Alice. “I LOVED the show and was fascinated to hear all the BTS goss on the podcast. But I got horribly bored during season two of the podcast. The director doesn’t even bother recapping the episodes anymore and has started joining in on the circle jerk instead, so I stopped listening.”
Instead, Alice has started her own fan-based rewatch podcast, called The Unofficial Small-Town News Recap. “I’ve been doing with my with sister and we’ve been poring over old episodes. We promise to keep each episodes to a tight 45 minutes with no stupid chit-chat about our lives. It’ll be purely focused on the show we all love.”
Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of ‘The Betoota Advocate’. We swear.
