TEAMS TALKING POINT:

No changes for Australia as coach Kevin Walters stays loyal to last weekend’s players – meaning the big team news is who isn’t in the starting side – James Tedesco, Sam Walker and Latrell Mitchell, all match breakers by themselves. Chanel Harris-Tavita is out injured for Samoa but they can call upon Ronald Volkman, who did a great job for Parramatta this season and will do it again on Sunday. Deine Mariner returns from injury but is beaten into the starting side by Sualauvi Faalogo.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Reece Walsh – Obvious one, but he is hard to ignore either way.

Liam Martin – If Australia need someone to fire them up for this big semi finals clash to get over the impressive Samoans, it is the angry man Liam Martin to lead them.

Jarome Luai – A real chance to lead Samoa to glory here while the Aussies haven’t been at their best this tournament.

Spencer Leniu – He may not play big minutes by the measure of minutes and seconds, but the minute he does play at the moment are all big time. Such good impact from an interchange forward.

BATTLES TO WATCH:

Centres – Maybe Kotoni Staggs and Bradman Best are Australia’s best centres, but Samoa’s Stephen Crichton and Izack Tago will certainly test the theory.

Wingers – Jack Bostock has been impressive on his international debut, but hopefully not enough to see him move from the Dolphins, and Tom Trbojevic has scored some tries, but the Samoan pair have the edge in our opinion. Brian To’o is a great try scorer and early in the tackle set runs are the NRL’s best. The other winger Sualauvi Faalogo has been awesome for Samoa since breaking into the starting side.

Back Row – There’s a lot to like about Newcastle duo Jermaine McEwen and Francis Manuleleua, and the Dolphins’ Connelly Lemuelu is great out wide too. Australia have some good experience in the back row, but they do lack a little X Factor than the Samoans can offer.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE ABOUT THIS GAME

Because it’s Australia, and there’s a hint that an upset could be on the cards.

PREDICTION

Australia haven’t been at their best in all games so far, and although they are due to come out and blow a team away, our feeling is that Samoa have the right mix of everything to upset them.

Samoa by 6

AI PREDICTION

Since everyone else is using AI, why not us for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

We asked AI the following: “Predict the winner of this 2026 Rugby League World Cup based on historical H2H records, each team’s record at World Cup, each team’s International record from the last 10 years with a recency bias on the last three years, relative toughness of each team’s forward pack, and overall courage of the general population from each country.”

AI SAID:

A prediction model using the factors you specified would strongly favour Australia to defeat Samoa in the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

Assessment by Factor

1. Historical Head-to-Head

Australia have historically dominated Samoa in international rugby league. While Samoa have improved dramatically since attracting more NRL stars through eligibility rule changes, Australia possess a long record of winning these encounters, often comfortably.

Edge: Australia

2. Rugby League World Cup History

Australia

  • 12 World Cup titles.
  • Highest winning percentage in World Cup history.
  • Have reached virtually every final.
  • Consistently defeat Tier 1 nations in knockout football.

Samoa

  • Best achievement: 2022 runners-up.
  • Historic achievement reaching the final by defeating England.
  • Prior to 2022 had never reached a World Cup final.

Large edge: Australia

3. International Record (2017-2026)

Australia

  • Multiple Pacific Championships.
  • Consistently ranked among the world’s top two nations.
  • Wins over New Zealand, England, Tonga and Samoa.

Samoa

  • Significant growth due to NRL player availability.
  • Wins against England, Tonga and New Zealand during the period.
  • More competitive against top nations than ever before.

The gap is smaller than it was 10 years ago, but Australia remain more consistent.

Edge: Australia

4. Recency Bias (Last Three Years)

This is where Samoa close the gap most significantly.

Potential leading Samoa players:

  • Jarome Luai
  • Brian To’o
  • Stephen Crichton
  • Spencer Leniu
  • Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow (if eligible and selected under future rules)
  • Junior Paulo

Potential leading Australian players:

  • Nathan Cleary
  • Cameron Munster
  • Harry Grant
  • Isaah Yeo
  • Payne Haas
  • Tino Fa’asuamaleaui
  • Patrick Carrigan

Australia’s squad depth remains superior. Samoa can match Australia’s best 17 better than almost any nation, but Australia’s 18-30 ranked players are generally much stronger.

Slight edge: Australia

5. Forward Pack Comparison

Australia

Likely rotation:

  • Payne Haas
  • Tino Fa’asuamaleaui
  • Patrick Carrigan
  • Isaah Yeo
  • Lindsay Collins
  • Reuben Cotter

Samoa

Likely rotation:

  • Junior Paulo
  • Spencer Leniu
  • Josh Papali’i (if selected)
  • Jaydn Su’A
  • Stefano Utoikamanu
  • Haumole Olakau’atu

Samoa’s pack is extremely powerful and can physically compete with Australia.

However Australia have:

  • Greater middle-forward depth.
  • Better defensive work rate.
  • More experience winning major tournaments.

Moderate edge: Australia

6. General Population “Courage”

This factor has little objective predictive value.

Australia and Samoa both possess strong sporting cultures and produce exceptionally resilient rugby league athletes. Samoa’s cultural emphasis on family, community and physical football arguably rates among the strongest in international rugby league, so if anything Samoa might score highly here.

However this factor is unlikely to materially affect a World Cup result compared with playing talent and depth.

Essentially neutral

Predicted Winning Probability

Predicted Score

Australia 28-16 Samoa

Most likely match script:

  • Samoa remain competitive through the middle stages.
  • Australia gradually win the territory battle.
  • Superior bench depth and spine quality create separation in the second half.
  • Samoa have sufficient strike power through players such as Luai, Crichton and To’o to score multiple tries.

Final Prediction

🏆 Australia to defeat Samoa

Estimated probability: Australia 73%, Samoa 27%

Predicted score: Australia 28-16 Samoa

Of all potential challengers outside England and New Zealand, Samoa are probably among the nations most capable of upsetting Australia, but over 80 minutes in a World Cup knockout environment Australia’s historical pedigree, depth of elite forwards, and world-class spine make them deserved favourites.
