WINNERS
FOOTBALL FANS
Premier League is back after an even longer International break than usual. As much as we love the World Cup, friendlies and friendlies dressed as any other name are just meh. Not just the Premier League, but all the Football League and leagues around Europe. Too much football is barely enough.
MANAGERS WITHOUT A JOB
Heading into the Manchester Utd v Tottenham game, some were suggesting the losing team’s manager would be on the thinner ice, so a 1-1 probably keeps the ice on the same level for both, which isn’t all that safe. Despite waiting until as painful for their fans as possible to get a point, you could argue Spurs were the better team, but they are still in the bottom three without a win. Man Utd have won, but they were actually outplayed by Ipswich in that only win in the first half and no side has seen that Bruno again. Former club greatness can only last so long for Mr Carrick. So the big winner is any of the managers out of work, as both these teams are great options for the CV. Of the people in betting markets for both clubs, these are who we’d like to see: Man Utd – Carlo Ancelotti, Spurs – Marcelo Bielsa.
FANS OF PROMOTED CLUBS
It’s easy to dump on the promoted clubs pre-season, especially given before last season most of them have been awful, and some ruined football as an Ipswich Town fan. So the fact that all three teams aren’t currently last, and if Coventry get a point v Newcastle on Monday, none of them will be in the bottom three. Whilst that may not be the case come the end of the season, as all three can still stink and drop to relegation it’s incredible to think Hull are Hull having lost just once this season, Ipswich have won three games (which took them until December 30 to do last time), and Coventry have turned the corner since their opening run to start the season was Arsenal, Man City. It may not mean end of season disappointment isn’t avoided, but at least is appears that season-long dread may not also be the case.
CHELSEA GAMES
Like or dislike Chelsea, and many people do the latter, you have to enjoy Chelsea games at the moment, currently producing 4.7 goals per game. The beauty is too if you don’t like Chelsea that they have only won half of their games, so you can enjoy the goals with Chelsea not necessarily winning.
BRIGHTON / BRENTFORD
Unbelievable that well run clubs with solid strategies, smart people running the club efficiently, and sensational talent scouting are sitting 3rd and 4th while four of the big six clubs are below, and some well below. Perhaps it could convince other clubs to do the same and we can a nicely balanced league. It also gives hope for fans of any club that you can still hit such heights after long spells in the Football League, by surviving and thriving. The lofty league position may not last forever for both, although Brighton really feels like a real deal for a top five finish.
LOSERS
FOOTBALL FANS
So what happens now? With Man City’s 3-0 win, and a 6/6 start, they may not lose a game this season and in normal cases win the Premiership. But who knows if and when the actual punishment will come for their financial crimes. Given the low relegation points total has been in recent seasons and the current invincible Man City form, the Premier League might need to give them at least 100 point deduction. And every game v Man City is going to suck, especially if they keep winning and smug it up. Although, by keeping them playing it gives each club’s fans a chance to let them know what they think, which might feel good, unless you’re one of the club’s Man City have already played away. Unlike VAR, the penalty process for punishment needs to move quick.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Lost their game 3-1 despite playing well, having the superior expected goals, big chances and most other stats. Imagine having eight Big Chances and not winning. And against their new rival, with the manager playing against his former side. Being a Nottingham Forest manager who isn’t winning, we expect him to be fired before November.
FULHAM
Leading Ipswich away with a few minutes to go, and finishing the game with a loss and are still winless. They aren’t playing that bad at all, but the gap to teams they probably expected to be above like Hull and Ipswich is already seven points. And their manager in his post match press conference gave up an almost “do you know who I am”. That won’t end well.
