Each gameweek in this 2026-27 Premier League season we offer up a stat filled prediction preview, with some barely interesting stats and visuals, just enough to bluff your way through various tipping competitions or betting shops.

FRI 8PM – CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
Man City are unbeaten in their last nine v Crystal Palace but at least there’s been three draws. Man City are unbeaten in their last 12 visits to Crystal Palace (W9 D3) and the home side last won there v Man City in 2015. Crystal Palace have won the only game between these sides, back in 1965. Man City were one of two clubs last season to avoid defeat for away games in London and the only non-London team (W4 D3). Only Burnley and Wolves scored fewer goals at home last season.
Verdict: Tough start for Crystal Palace, although it’s not a bad time to play a transitioning post-Pep Man City, they will probably give them nothing here. Unlike the many hundreds of millions they will give other clubs to buy players. Sometimes from Crystal Palace themselves.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 0 Man City 3
SAT 12:30PM – LIVERPOOL v NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Nottingham Forest have won on their last two trips to Anfield, and the home side have failed to score in both games. Since 1992, the H2H between these sides is 4-4 with three draws. Nottingham Forest’s average points per game v big six clubs last season was 6th best with W4 D3 L5.
Verdict: Who knows with Liverpool, they have more than enough talent and are lucky enough, and sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Have Forest sacked their manager yet?
Prediction: Liverpool 2 Nottingham Forest 0
SAT 3PM – COVENTRY v HULL
The last three games between these sides have ended in a draw and five of the last seven. Coventry have won just one of their last eight at home to Hull – W1 D3 L4
For no good reason and fewer stats at this early stage, here is last season’s intra-promoted clubs results:
Leeds: W1 D1 L2
Sunderland: W2 D1 L1
Burnley: W2 L2
Verdict: It would be unfair to say this is a relegation six pointer, but these clashes probably all are this season. Probably not as unfair as Coventry’s first game in the Premier League for a few decades being away to the reigning and eventual Champions Arsenal. Coventry’s home form v Hull is a worry. As was Hull’s form first up v Man Utd. But, can Coventry make it three from three for promoted side’s first home game ending in wins? Na. Draw.
Prediction: Coventry 1 Hull 1
SAT 3PM – BOURNEMOUTH v EVERTON
Bournemouth have won four of the last five meetings v Everton. Everton won the last game between these sides at Bournemouth, but it was D1 L6 before that. Bournemouth won the last three games on a Saturday between these sides. Both of these teams were on the losing side of expected goals last weekend, Bournemouth led Man City before losing and Everton won 2-0.
Verdict: It’s a real Saturday 3pm special. Bournemouth’s decent form v Everton might get them home, or the ghostly stare of David Moyes will scare them into losing. Not long before the transfer window closes which is always a good thing for Bournemouth’s squad size and quality.
Prediction: Bournemouth 2 Everton 1
SAT 5:30PM – TOTTENHAM v NEWCASTLE
Newcastle have won six of the last eight v Spurs (W6 D1 L1). Newcastle have won the last two, and three of the last four at Spurs by the same score: 2-1. Newcastle have also won the last two Saturday fixtures v Spurs. But prior to the last game at Spurs on a Saturday v Newcastle, Spurs won six in a row by a combined 14-1. Spurs has the third worst home record last season.
Verdict: Seems surprising that people find it surprising that a team which was the last one not relegated two seasons in a row is still sh!t. They will surely improve on losing 3-0 to Brentford, and Newcastle usually aren’t very lucky, but don’t like the relegation potentials they looked pre-season. Newcastle have a surprisingly good record recently v Spurs. Imagine if both of these teams went down, they could join playing West Ham again.
Prediction: Spurs 1 Newcastle 2
SUN 2PM – LEEDS v BRENTFORD
Leeds were the only team to keep a clean sheet away last weekend for gameweek 1. Five of the last six games between these teams have ended in a draw. The last three at Leeds were draws and the last two of those were 0-0. Although there was been a lot of draws, there hasn’t been a lot of Brentford wins at Leeds either. Leeds’ record for the last 18 home games v Brentford going back to 1948 is W8 D9 L1. Leeds (W1 D4 L3) won just one Sunday game last season. Brentford were a more equal W3 D3 L3.
Verdict: Two opening day winners on the up should make this plenty interesting. Unless it’s a 0-0 draw, which we say it won’t be. Still a draw, just a more exciting one.
Prediction: Leeds 1 Brentford 1
SUN 2PM – SUNDERLAND v FULHAM
Fulham have won the last three games between these sides. Sunderland have won only one of their last nine home games v Fulham (W1 D4 L4). Sunderland’s 1.8 points per game on a Sunday last season was fifth best. Fulham lead the Sunday H2H between these sides by 3-1, with one draw.
Verdict: Could be wrong, but this could be one of those check-the-score games, for those foolish enough to have been sucked in to choosing players from these sides i n their Fantasy teams.
Prediction: Sunderland 0 Fulham 0
SUN 2PM – CHELSEA v BRIGHTON
Brighton have won the last three games v Chelsea and scored three goals in each game. In more symmetry, the last 6 games at Chelsea between these sides has ended with two wins for Chelsea, two wins for Brighton and two draws. Chelsea have won the two Sunday games these teams have played.
Verdict: Probably game of the round between Chelsea and Chelsea B. Well that’s unfair on Brighton, as they are one of the smartest sporting clubs in the world. It’s not their fault if their players like to go to Chelsea and mostly do worse than when they were at Brighton. Impressive start for both last weekend though, and demanding more of the same this weekend.

SUN 4:30PM – MANCHESTER UTD v IPSWICH
Ipswich still hold the record (equal) for the worst Premier League defeat in a 1990’s visit to Old Trafford. Man Utd have won five in a row at home to Ipswich by a combined 21-2, but at least the last game in that run was 2-3. The first one in that run was 0-9. Ipswich won more games last time they were in the Premier League against big 6 clubs (two wins) than against the bottom 6 clubs (one win) and other relegated clubs (no wins). Man Utd’s 2.07 points per game and 1.93 goals per game was last season’s best record on a Sunday. Man Utd have never lost to Ipswich on a Sunday (W3 D1).
Verdict: Two sets of fans that couldn’t be more different in terms of emotions after their first game. Well, Man Utd fans would be happier than Spurs fans. Ipswich fans raised the roof of Portman Road with a first-up win, not bad considering they only won the one game at home last time they were in the Premier League. Man Utd fans got mauled by Hull, and they’ll probably spend half of what Ipswich has on one player to recover. Ignoring logic, decades of Premier League data, and reality, as Ipswich fans we say let the good times roll. To a point.

MON 8PM – ASTON VILLA v ARSENAL
Aston Villa have won three of the last 6 games v Arsenal (W3 D1 L2). The H2H between these sides at Aston Villa for the last seven is 4-3 to Aston Villa, but before that Arsenal were unbeaten in 18 visits. Aston Villa have won the last two games between these sides on a Sunday, but both were at Arsenal. Aston Villa were W4 L2 at home to the big 6 clubs last season.
Verdict: Aston Villa started off slow last season too (D3 L2) but not quite as bad as losing 4-0 like last weekend. Arsenal looked like a team who might not lose a game this season on their first game.
Prediction: Aston Villa 0 Arsenal 3
