But now comes the hard part, winning consecutive knockout games to win the trophy. The first round is the newly installed Round of 32, so FIFA can slowly reduce the number of teams in the tournament but not the had-raytion breaks. Canada leave it until very late to steal the game away from South Africa, scoring the winner well into injury time where most have assumed to settle in for an extra 30 minutes.

GAME 2 – BRASIL 2 JAPAN 1
Japan shocked Brazil, scoring first just after the first h-ad-ration break and taking a 1-0 half time lead. The former World Champions sparked more into life in the second half and got an equaliser through Casemiro just before the hour. And they broke the Japanese hearts so late with a winner in the 6th minute of 6 additional minutes. It had been coming but harsh on Japan.

GAME 3 – PARAGUAY 1 GERMANY 1 (Paraguay win 5-4 on Penalties)
Paraguay have moved to the Round of 16 with a hard fought win on penalties over Germany. The Paraguayans made Germany sweat early, ironically just after the hy-ad-ration break. Germany responded with an early second half goal and dominated the rest of the half. No more goals came so Additional Time was needed. Germany did hit the front 2-1 in the additional time, but the goal was denied harshly by VAR for a player pushing the goalkeeper over in the lead up. Germany blinked first in the shootout missing their first and fourth shots, but then Paraguay had two chances to seal the win and blew it. Not as badly as the 6th German shooter who sailed his kick over the bar leaving Paraguay with the win by slotting their 6th attempt. Germany are out early again, and Paraguay make Australia look good by progressing.

GAME 4 –Â NETHERLANDS 1 MOROCCO 1 (Morocco win 4-3 on Penalties)
Another Round of 32 makes it to a penalty shootout and again it is the more fancied European nations saying goodbye to the 2026 World Cup. A tight game throughout saw no goals in the first half where things were quite feisty at times. Followed by a game breaking goal from the Netherlands in the 72nd minute cancelled out by a 91st Moroccan equaliser. Extra time was a waste as ever, and then came the penalty shootout where the Netherlands went badly, missing and having their kicks saved. Morocco weren’t much better, they had chances to win the game on their 4th and 5th kick but choked. Luckily for them Netherlands had their first sudden death kick saved and Ismael Saibari slotted home the winning penalty kick.

GAME 5 – IVORY COAST 1 NORWAY 2
Norway have progressed to the Round of 16 of the World Cup courtesy of one of Erling Haaland’s least convincing goals, but as ever he was in the right place at the right time to first touch the ball towards goal. This winner was more of a soft roll over the line rather than a thunderbolt, but the 2-1 matters. Norway did score a non Haaland goal just before half time, and the Ivory Coast capped some on field dominance with a goal in the 74th minute. Haaland’s winner came in the 86th minute.

GAME 6 – FRANCE 3 SWEDEN 0
If you didn’t think France were one of the favourites for the 2026 World Cup you should now. Their 3-0 win showcased all that is currently good about France. But they didn’t have it all their own way. Sweden had plenty of chances to get a goal or two, and France blew chances and had good ones saved before Mbappe broke through just before half time. He joined Messi at the top of the scorers list with a second in this game and 6th overall in the 74th minute, which broke Sweden’s resolve. Micael Olise’s claims for best player at the World Cup continue with two assists and was unlucky not to have a goal for himself. France looked awesome and looking to progress deep in the competition.

Game 7 – Mexico 2 ECUADOR 0
Mexico thrilled their home crowd with a dominant win over Ecuador to seal another home game in the Round of 16 where they will likely face England. Two goals before half time were enough, one to Julián Quiñones was a thing of beauty, another to Raúl Jiménez saw his good news story continue. Ecuador finished in a flurry of cards including a red one in the 94th minute.

Game 7 – ENGLAND 2 DR CONGO 1
A game mostly about Harry Kane. But not before DR Congo gave England a huge scare of potential humiliating knockout departure. DR Congo took the lead in the 7th minute and didn’t give it up until Harry Kane’s first goal in the 75th minute. He followed it up ten minutes later for the win, but not before a decent dive for a penalty when 1-0 down that will earn him as much internet coverage as the goals you’d suggest.

GAME 8 – BELGIUM 3 SENEGAL 2 (aet)
Belgium have made it through to the Round of 16 but did it the hard way, and with a little help from the officials. Senegal were on track for R16 glory scoring in the 25th and 51st minutes, the second by Ismailia Sarr was a wonderful goal from a player who has caught the eye this World Cup. But once again the subbing on of Romelu Lukaku made the difference, he scored the first goal for Belgium in the 86th minute and was a presence throughout, Belgium drawing level in the 89th. Additional 30 minutes was needed and Belgium were handed a very generous penalty in the dying stages of those 30 minutes. After about ten minutes to review, and what looked to be a Senegal player protesting by either lying on the penalty spot or playing to get a penalty himself, Youri Tielemans put away the penalty and broke Senegal and African hearts.

United States cruised into the Round of 16 with a relatively easy 2-0 win over Bosnia in a game where Folarin Balogun was one of the main headline grabbers. He put the USA in front with a nicely worked goal and had other chances to increase his tally. He then dented his legacy and chance to increase his goal tally with a red card in the 64th minute, which seemed harsh for a clumsy-ish contact with the Bosnian opponent’s leg. The red card didn’t USA from winning or scoring a second which they did in the 82nd minute.

Spain flexed their World Cup winning muscles wit ha comprehensive win over Austria in their Round of 32 clash. It was their best performance of the World Cup so far with a double to Oyarzabal and a rocket header from Porro.
PORTUGAL 2 CROATIA 1
Possibly game of the Round of 32, probably Croatia were ripped off. For Portugal Ronaldo finally scored a knockout goal, this one a penalty not long after being denied a first for offside. The penalty looked quite soft, and not unlike a million other occurrences seen in World Football this season that went on unpunished. This was after Perisic scored for Croatia to take the lead. Portugal took the lead four minutes into Stoppage time, and Croatia look to have equalised with seconds to go, but ruled out for offside after the ball glanced the head of a Croatian player according to VAR.
SWISS 2 ALGERIA 0
Swiss efficiency, or Swissiency we call it, was on full display as the Swiss won easily over Algeria 2-0 to book a Round of 16 clash with Colombia.
AUSTRALIA 1 EGYPT 1 (Egypt win 5-3 on Penalties)
Australia are out of the World Cup at the first time again, and they were competitive enough, but not cutting edge enough to beat Egypt in regular or extra time. Their late replacement of goalkeepers and penalty taking order and personnel was also under question after the loss, and two of the first four kicks missed and Egypt got the job done with all four.
ARGENTINA 3 CAPE VERDE 2 (After Extra Time)
Almost the upset of this and most World Cups as first timers Cape Verde push Argentina into Extra Time and equalised for a second time in those additional 30 minutes with one of the goals of the tournament. It was an advertisement for the good of having 48 teams, as Cape Verde may not have qualified but now leave the World Cupo having not been beaten in regular time throughout, playing no less than Spain and Argentina.

Ghana proved difficult to beat once again, but Colombia continued their quiet, impressive run at this World Cup with a 1-0 win that could easily have been more.
