EVERYDAY NEWS – The New Game Show

Channel 10 are launching a new game show inspired by a popular social media channel.

Hosted by Sam Pang, Perfectly Petty is loosely based on the Am I the Asshole Reddit channel, and will feature three Channel 10 celebrities reading out stories of real-life pettiness from viewers (sent via email or social media DMs), with the studio audience to vote for the best story via a ‘Petty Meter’ ratings system (from 1 to 5) factoring in overall pettiness, the result of the story (did the right people get what they deserved), and general entertainment value. The contestant with the highest overall ratings will win a three-night stay for two at a luxury hotel on the Gold Coast (with the hotel chain in question conveniently sponsoring the show).

Attending an advance screening, a local entertainment journalist (who wished to remain anonymous) was scathing when interviewed by Everyday News.

“This show is a lazy retread of a popular social media trend, with more interest in cross-promoting various Channel 10 shows and personalities, as well as giving plenty of airtime to the hotel chain that gives away the main prize. It’s a 30 minute advertorial disguised as a ‘game show’, with the main prize supposed to inject some tension and stakes. Unfortunately, the stories are variants of the same handful of topics and get boring pretty quickly, relying on the presenters’ skills to make them vaguely entertaining. And the vapid studio audience feels like it was picked from the worst parts of a rugby league, Aussie rules, or soccer crowd: lots of hooting and hollering and cheering at anything vaguely spicy. I like Sam Pang, and I feel for him as he pretends to be invested in this tripe! Hopefully his agent is working towards a second season of the excellent Ground Up, as Perfectly Petty won’t be around long.”
