The second home nation Canada got their tournament underway with a 1-1 draw with Bosnia that they will probably regret not taking more of their chances and winning the game. But Bosnia defended well but both look like early knockout round fodder, although Canada appears to have the bigger upside. This Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina review will explain it all further, and moan about stuff that doesn’t really matter.

Here are the bits and pieces and minutes that mattered during the game, to provide you with as much information as you need in one minute, or at least allow you to fast forward the SBS coverage.
Setting the scene
Day Two of the 2026 FIFA World Cup sees the other two host nations have their day in the sun, Canada are first up and sadly we missed their opening ceremony gear but we’re sure it would have been great. This is an open group, giving these teams a real chance of topping the group and making knockout life easier, and a win in this game puts them in the box seat for when they both play Switzerland and beat Qatar. Pressure is on Canada as the hosts, while Bosnia & Herzegovina are back for the first time since 2014. The violin version of the Bosnian national anthem is quite cool, as does the sea of red of the Canadian fans. With Alanis Morrisette singing the national anthem for Canada a blast from the past.
1st Min – Canada look very lively straight away. A couple of attacks at the Bosnia goal and a corner within the first 60 seconds. Hopefully that’s a good sign of some fun to come.
2nd Min – First decent shot at goal for the match, although decent shot doesn’t accurately describe the kick more the chance. A free kick for Bosnia lands on the edge of the penalty area and the Bosnian player puts it about ten metres over the bar.
8th Min – No offence to either side or leagues, but despite the effort it looks more like League One than the number one competition for football at the moment. Maybe it’s the heat. Maybe this one should have been a mini match watch.
12th Min – Alistair Johnston gets the first yellow card of the game as we get our first Neymar pain roll of the game. The ensuing free kick from Bosnia sees headed contact towards goals as pissweak as the contact that led to the free kick.
17th Min – First shot on target for Canada after some sustained attack. It was a soft-ish strike aimed straight at the keeper, so no concerns for Bosnia or the scoreboard operator just yet.
21st Min – GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL
Bosnia have opened the scoring and it comes from a double header corner. The in-swinging corner arrives at the near post where the first Bosnian header pushes it towards the middle of the goal and Lukic is there to get the winning glancing blow to send it over the line. That will keep the home crowd quiet for a while too.
CANADA 0 BOSNIA 1
And it’s time for an ad, I mean hydration break.
29th Min – Some sustained attack for the home side, leading to a decent chance with great position for Canada with a free kick right on the edge of the box to the left, but they don’t do much with it, and waste another chance. They’re getting enough ball and chances, but really lacking quality at the moment. Another chance a few minutes later highlights this as a shot is blasted over the bar.
38th Min – Multiple corners end in multiple disappointment for Canada and they remain 0-1 behind to Bosnia.
45th Min – Four minutes of added time to be played, and for Canada the half time break will be a good chance to reset, as they have the best of the attack but can’t finish. Their last corner of the half sums it up.
And the street-wise Bosnians are protecting their lead well. Although the yellow cards are starting to creep in, so if we can’t have any further goals in the match, a tantrum throwing red card would be a nice and welcome addition in the second half.
HALF TIME – CANADA 0 BOSNIA 1
49th Min – First moment of real action in the second half is a collision between a Canada attacker and the Bosnian goalkeeper in the corner of the penalty area. The keeper did appear to punch the Canadian attacker in the head as they met, but the free kick goes to Bosnia for an earlier offside. Both players eventually dust themselves off.
52th Min – Not sure how Canada didn’t score here. An attack down the left leads to a cross on the six yard box where the Canada attacker pushes it towards certain goal. But a Bosnian defender appears and gets enough leather on it to lift it up onto the cross bar and it bounces favourably for Bosnia. A big chance missed here.
56th Min – Referee intervenes with a little dust up, so hopefully this leads to more niggle later on as the 1-0 scoreline to Bosnia starts to bite. Although, the referees multiple whistling at every opportunity is not what’s needed at 6am or ever.
64th Min – Another attack from Canada with the home side showing plenty of skill and intent, just the last bit continues to lack quality. What will probably happen is that Canada will continue to have all the ball and not score, and Bosnia will go down the other end with two minutes to go and score a second.
66th Min – Another potential goal cleared off the line. This time a header is heading towards goal and a Bosnian defender is in the right place at the right time heading the ball away. In fairness it wasn’t a bullet header, one bouncing gently off the ground, but bouncing towards goal and needed stopping.
68th Min – Hydration break called, and probably good for Canada as they look frustrated. A Canadian player is lucky to avoid a yellow card with a display of petulance after Canada waste another free kick opportunity.
78th Min – GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL
Canada finally breakthrough and the sea of red goes wild. A delightful one-two on the edge of the penalty area gets caught up in the Bosnian defence and the ball bobbles a bit, but Cyle Larin is on hand to pick up the bouncing ball, making a wonderful pivot with the ball and he fires right of the keeper and into the net. 1-1 is at least approaching the fairness of the overall contest.
CANADA 1 BOSNIA 1
87th Min – The game and sh!thousery has opened up a little as Bosnia are no longer looking to defend their lead and Canada continue their pre-goal efforts of good attack without end product. The only problem with more fouls is more whistle from the whistle-happy referee.
90th Min – Six minutes of injury time to be added. To be honest, we don’t really want them. We’ll take the 1-1 scoreline and get six minutes back.
90th Min +2 – A Bosnian player appears to fall over for no reason, which is fair enough for football. A replay shows a head clash which was good enough for a free kick to Bosnia, which gives them a chance to ruin an entire country’s mood. Nothing comes of it.
90th Min +3 – A Bosnian player throwing a Canadian attacker to the ground is nothing too exciting and pretty lightweight stuff, but the Ref Cam view of the yellow card taking about 0.2 seconds to come out of the pocket and be waived at the Bosnian player is fun.
90th Min +6 – A moment to sum up the game, a Canadian attack where they have the ball on the six yard line with a perfect chance to steal the win, but a Bosnian defender is more desperate and throws themselves at the shot and stops the potential goal. It’s the last play of the game.
Canada were the more likely to win ,and probably should have done so with the ball, territory and chances they had. Given how easy this group appears, and the next phase qualification overall, a draw will do for now.
