Australia vs Turkey 2026 FIFA World Cup (Group D) Match Centre, Stats & Review

The Group D Australia vs Turkey match has seen a rather large upset as Australia have won 2-0 defying a bombardment of attack from Turkey in the second half, sealing the game with a great counter-attacking goal. The Australian defence was heroic, and the Socceroos were clinical when they got their chances. It gives them three points in Group D, which is probably at least two more than they would have realistically expected pre-game.

Setting the scene.

It’s a weird feeling for those in Australia to watch a World Cup game featuring the Socceroos in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. The afternoon being more the point than a Sunday. Australia are playing one of those nations that everyone expects to thrash us, but similar was said before the 2022 World Cup playing teams like Denmark too, and that ended well for the Aussies. Turkey come into the game and tournament with dark horses status, so let’s see if the Aussies can geld the Turks.

For a fans of an older generation, we acknowledge we don’t know as many of the Socceroos players as we should. It doesn’t matter. Roll on we say.

And for the record we realise we should call Turkey Türkiye, and were completely ignorant that it is pronounced differently too. We apologies in advance, but it’s so much easier to type Turkey, and works much better for turkey based puns.

3rd Min – First corner/s of the game goes to Turkey after a lively opener from both sides. Australia even had half or quarter chances down their end. Turkey don’t threaten from this corner for now, but Australians will certainly know the threat a Turk side can have.

7th Min – First proper shot of the game goes to Turkey at the end of some nice play. Not much of s threat as it sails over the bar, but the need for some early filler in this report leads us here.

11th Min – This is a good fun game, one that is most welcome for a Sunday afternoon. Australia have their best chance so far with a run down the right but the cross into the box is too hard and no one can get involved this time. But good signs that Australia can hold their own and we aren’t in for a Simpsons-esque ties-you-bet match. Although, a draw is a good result for Australia here.

17th Min – Standard Australia tackling too hard foul which we will see throughout the tournament as the no-sook attitude of Australia shines through. Surely the Socceroos will embracing and absorbing the spirit of Greg Norman throughout the game, although, could politely dump that in the last ten minutes of each match given he was prone to a choke. The T-T-H foul will become yellow cards in the second half.

22nd Min – Ad break, I mean hydration break and the scoreline reflects the game fairly. Well aside from accurately reflecting that neither side has scored a goal, it’s been an even contest with little in it. Perhaps both sides will settle for a draw. But that’s loser talk.

26th Min – Proper chance, shot on target for Turkey from Arda Guler and an outstanding save from Australian keeper Beach. Socceroos goes on the counter attack…….

27th Min – GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Australia quickly break from the Turkey near miss and fly down the left, ball goes into Irankunda who jinks, then sets himself up for a shot and smashes it home on the edge of the box. Australia lead!!!!!!!!!!!!

AUSTRALIA 1 TURKEY 0

30th Min – Turkey hit the post….that was close. This game has exploded into action. Box Office for a Sunday.

39th Min – Game has been a bit quiet for shots on goal, so Australia have a crack from a long throw. Went well over the bar, but good filler. All good when you’re 1-0 up.

42nd Min – Turkey return the favour with a shot over the bar without threatening. Turkey it could be argued are slightly on top here, but the way Australia are getting back into defence has been immense.

45th Min – Proper chance and shot on target for Australia after some lovely play from the Socceroos. The shot needed a little more chilli to burn the palms of the Turkey keeper this time, but it did bobble a bit, for future reference, if they players can read this, which of course they can’t. Four minutes of added time to come.

45th Min +4 – Turkey pressure the Socceroos in the dying minutes of the first half, but the Socceroos are rock solid. Defending like Kokoda, Anzac and all that. They keep their 1-0 lead going into the second half.

HALF TIME – AUSTRALIA 1 TURKEY 0

46th Min – Early chance for Turkey that is fired true but fair at the Australian keeper who eats it up. But a warning for the danger of Turkey.

48th Min – Not to be outdone, the Socceroos aka Australia have a few chances themselves down the other end, showing it is not going to be Australia putting up a wall.

50th Min – Corner for Turkey after a sharp show is deflected wide of the goal.

53rd Min – Some great chances for Australia, a header on target saved and a some follow up pressure giving Turkey and turkeys everywhere something to think about. A solid minute in the Turkish third of the field.

56th Min – Potential trouble here for the Socceroos, a free kick given five metres outside the penalty area and in the middle of the goal. To be fair the referee has been pretty kind with fouls so far.

The free kick is a beauty and the Aussie keeper is up to the task. A bit of a scramble in the follow up which sees Australia give up a corner, and Turkey claim for handball. Both ended up fruitless for Turkey.

62nd Min – Turkey are slowing gaining momentum, but they can’t get past the Socceroos wall just yet. The substitutions start in earnest. Poor Ernest, what did he ever do?

65th Min – Bit of a moan here, but Australia are coming under pressure from Turkey more and more, and it seems despite Australia’s great defensive work so far, we are getting a bit cute with getting rid of the ball. Needless to say most fair dinkum Australians prefer Route One soccer and football. They haven’t been caught out yet, but have offered up a few chances to Turkey because of passing small, when they need to pass large. Along Route One. The road to success.

68th Min – Ad Break, I mean hydration break, and Australia probably need it to rest. Turkey getting on top, and Australia doing so well to keep them away.

72nd Min – Turkey are camped in Australia’s half and they try a shot at the near post, but the Australian keeper is not going to give that up easy and a corner conceded. Turkey don’t do anything too dangerous from the corner, but the Socceroos just can’t seem to clear them out of their half at the moment. Although, a sneaky breakaway goal is on the cards.

74th Min  – No word of a lie, we are typing this live…..

GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Australia run down the right on a break away, there’s loads of space to run and run we do. Then Connor Metcalfe spies a chance to have a shot, and have a shot he does, and what a shot. It’s a magnificent goal. The Socceroos have soaked up all that defence and that effort has been rewarded with goal, and a 2-0 lead.

Special mention to the guy on the broadcast replay wearing a World Cup Series cricket edition of Australian sporting attire.

AUSTRALIA 2 TURKEY 0

77th Min – Turkey go real close again, but the Australian keeper is up to the task again. As he has been all game.

85th Min – Another free kick for Turkey and another decent shot turned away from the magnificent Australian keeper. Not long after a mini Australian breakaway ends up in a Turkey yellow card and foul. A rare event at a World Cup for Australia.

90 Min ++ – Turkey are bombarding the Australian penalty area, and avoiding any references to historic conflicts, Australia are holding firm and frustrating the Turks. It has been an outstanding defensive effort. And why not an arrogant third goal for fun?

No third goal, but who needs it? It’s a 2-0 win for the Socceroos which really opens up their World Cup knockout chances. A magnificent performance and result. Wow and wow.
