EVERYDAY NEWS – The Mother’s Day Fight

A Mother’s Day lunch was ruined by a massive fight.

The Taylors were sitting down to a roast lunch last Sunday afternoon, but the celebrations were soon forgotten when Peter, the head of the house, complained that he was going to miss the Melbourne Storm vs Wests Tigers game. His wife, Sandy, hit back that he can have one day off from watching football, which sparked the argument as Peter accused Sandy of bossing him around, before with the two kids, Corey and Kate, joined in. Dinner grew cold as the family retreated to different rooms to calm down.

And Kate couldn’t have been happier.

“Everyone played their roles perfectly!” she said.

A second year film student, Kate has been working on a short film script, centred around a family who ruins a holiday with a big fight.

“I’ve been trying to find the ideal holiday to base it around, but Christmas and Easter were too busy. Fortunately Mother’s Day was around the corner. I changed the title to Smothers Day and we were ready to go. I’m still fine-tuning the dialogue, so I encouraged mum, dad, and Cor to improvise as much as they wanted. Missing the NRL game was dad’s idea as I originally had his character as an Aussie Rules fan. I also told mum to make dinner extra hot so it had time to cool down during the performance.”

After the ‘fight’, the family reconvened to discuss their performances and eat the slightly cool roast dinner. Unlike the script, it was a calm and upbeat meal, with zero conflict.

“I admit I wasn’t a fan of her studying film, but it’s a great script and she’s very talented,” said Peter. “And I’m glad she let me change it to some proper footy, not that aerial ping pong nonsense.”

“I was quite the actor before meeting Peter, and did a few plays before we had the kids, so it was nice to get the old acting bug again,” said Sandy. “I might even join the local theatre group now I’ve remembered how fun it was.”

While the introverted Corey wasn’t keen on being in a fight, even if it was staged, Kate promised to take him to the movies during the week if he participated.

“We’re going to see the new Mortal Kombat, which should be fun. Her play’s kinda boring, but maybe Kate can write a play with more action next time.”
