NEWCASTLE v NORTH QUEENSLAND
Not many would have picked Newcastle to win, let alone so handsomely, so well done to Newcastle for their first win since Round 16 in 2025.
The injury to Fletcher Sharpe was a double edged sword, using that as a pun Fletcher Sharpe lived up to his surname before getting an injury. The upside to Sharpe’s injury is that one of their off season recruits Sandon Smith played very well when he came on as well. Throw in a solid Newcastle start for Mega Millions man Dylan Brown and a return to the zipping, sparkling form for the other high roller player Kalyn Ponga, maybe Newcastle don’t looked as busted arse as they did in 2025.
As for North Queensland, it looks like another year of good, bad and ugly, with a sprinkling of sacked coach rumours.
BULLDOGS v DRAGONS
Bulldogs probably should have won earlier than they did, but credit to the Dragons for their fight. St George Illawarra showed why they won’t be on the receiving end of too many floggings in 2026 if they live up to their Las Vegas, but also at the same time they may not be storming the competition with wins either. But at least they will have Fox League on their side.
Dragons were dudded with a few ref calls, so were ultimately a little unlucky given the final margin of one point at the end of golden point, but both Flanagans will be happy at the recruitment of Daniel Atkinson to take pressure off both of them and each other.
But the Bulldogs did just enough, and signs are good for a big year from some of their big names. Yes, including the biggest Bulldog name of them all Lachlan Galvin. You feel from the Las Vegas experience that there’s plenty more coming from the Bulldogs and the Dragons were at their maximum.
